nineteen - twenty one
i tried to write about your eyes but i ran out of cliches, i tried to say you plainly but there wasn’t enough truth, whoever invented this language didn’t anticipate you.
Everything seemed to be going well. The lady didn't seem to hate him and so far it seemed as though he was going to get his bug type Pokemon egg. He stood back a little bit so that she could stand up and he wouldn't be crowding when she went to move. Following behind her he tried to secretly take a deep breath and relax. After all it wouldn't look god for a gym leader to have a panic attack over buying a Pokemon egg. That would just be embarrassing. "Yeah, 15 dots is fine. And I'm sure the personality will be fine too. I've got all types of bugs at the gym so I'm sure they'll be happy." That didn't sound too braggy did it? He didn't say what sort of gym it was but who else would actually have a bunch of bugs skittering around their home? Much less a gym meant for anything other than battling against bug types? Now he felt bad because he felt as though he was trying to get special treatment even though he wasn't.
Digging in his pocket he tugged out his wallet and counted out the dots for her. After all he didn't expect her to just hand over the egg without him paying for it. That would be completely ridiculous. "If you uh, get any other bug types in will you let me know?" He knew that she had a blog online but maybe she would be willing to send him an email if she got anything particularly interesting. Once again though he wasn't really expecting any sort of special treatment. He just wanted to make sure that his team was the best it could possibly be. God all of this was just so awkward and stupid on his part. He just needed to buck up and stop acting like such a baby. Instead though he held his hand out, full of the correct amount of money for her to take and hopefully exchange for the egg in her hands.

Gym? This guy worked at a Gym? Luella's first thought wasn't 'Pokemon Battle Gym' but 'Physical Training Center Gym', and imagining bugs crawling around a place like that had her frozen in her spot. "Oh...that's exciting." He seemed to know what he was talking about, and the more she thought about it, the less unreasonable it sounded. Maybe people could be motivated into doing extra push ups when they were screaming in terror at the thought of a hairy Wurmple inching their squishy little feet up a person's legs. But she reconsidered the idea when she recalled a conversation she had with her son, and he mentioned something about challenging the Gyms in the Nue region. Then it clicked.
But she wasn't about to act as if she just found that out. Oh no. Nope. Like hell she'd give anyone the satisfaction over her minor misunderstanding. "I'd be glad to. Send me an email so I don't forget." She knew she still had a few scattered post-it notes lying around that listed some breeding ideas for the Bubble Dome's Masquerain, but it all depended on whether they could relax despite the tension they sensed from the storm. "If the water types here aren't comfortable enough, I might have to take on other breeding requests until the storms die out. Maybe that'll work in your favor." She tried to sound optimistic about the situation, but it hardly changed the fact that mental and emotional well-being of the Bubble Dome Pokemon was a very real problem that had to be dealt with.
Maybe it'd be best to close the Aquarium for a few days. Erin would know what to do, she reasoned. Even if the girl still had a bit of a baby face in her cheeks, she had enough of a business-oriented mind to properly run an aquarium, so she probably had some sort of training in case a situation like this popped up. It gave Luella some hope, at least.

[ Friendship is a struggle ]
It never fully hit Luella just how bad the storms truly were in Tynntill until she woke up with vague sense of seasickness and the feeling of fur and sharp claws etched into her face. She woke up feeling as if something wasn't quite right as she stretched and yawned, huddled close to a Spinda and Seel that made themselves cozy beside her the second she reclined the van's front seat, turning it into a makeshift bed until she was ready to start the day. Ena had yet to relax from the effects of the storm, sticking close to Luella's backside as if she was terrified of getting swept away even when they were perfectly dry indoors. "Easy, Ena. I'm not going anywhere." Instead of getting used to the clingy habits of her water types, Luella found herself growing increasingly impatient with them, sometimes shrugging them off or keeping them in their Pokeballs since they appeared to feel safer in them anyways.
<I don't like it. I don't like any of this! Why won't it stop? Guys? Guuuuys?> Ena chirped after sliding off of Luella's back, hoping back and forth from seat to seat as the rest of the occupants left her with an uneasy silence, too busy staring at the horror that stared them down from Cider's side windows. Luella didn't even register the outdoor scene until she rubbed the last ounce of sleep out of her eyes, and then it hit her that the parking lot was starting to get hit with the recent floods. If the water got any higher, then Cider's floor was at risk of getting soaked.
She wasted no time in maneuvering Cider to high ground after that, swearing bitterly whenever Cider stalled and struggled to drive through the debris filled waters. "Unbelievable. They said that it was supposed to flood near the river. Not here." Luella didn't even want to see what the conditions were inside of the Bubble Dome, but if she had to strike a guess, it wasn't going to be open for guests if the weather was this bad.
Once she scrambled into her rain gear, she started to leave the group up on a hill near Lake Luna, but Ena was especially persistent on sticking close to Luella. <You can't just leave us here!> Ena piped up, clutching Luella's arm with her two trembling fins right as the blonde tried to step into the storm. While her younger Pokemon didn't seem too keen on sticking in a van that was nearly flooded, Ena was definitely the most panic-stricken out of all of them. Luella caved in. As much as she hated guilt trips, she didn't trust the weather enough to leave any of them behind for too long.
So in the balls they went. All but Ena seemed to agree that this was the safest scenario, and the Seel opted to squirming uncomfortably against Luella for a piggyback ride straight to the Bubble Dome. "You're a handful. Two handfuls. Three handfuls, Ena. I don't even have three hands and you're three handfuls." Luella muttered under her breath as she bolted through the pelting rain, cringing whenever she felt the Seel jump or tremble in fright from boisterous wind that howled around them. All this effort just to check in on a couple of breeding pairs she left at the Bubble Dome overnight.
It took two steps into the Bubble Dome for her to notice that the staff had their work cut out for them. The parking lot was flooded, and there was about an inch of water ruining the carpeting in the place. Workers hustled about to ensure the safety and well-being of the aquarium Pokemon, even taking precautions to potentially evacuate them if the situation in Tynntill proceeded to escalate. "Ena. You're heavy. It's safe indoors, I swear. Just get off." She wasn't patient enough to handle nurturing each of the Seel's concerns. She tried. Honest, she did. But she wasn't a super mom, and she wasn't exactly overflowing with love and patience when the storm's effects nearly flooded the only home she had.
Ena wasn't content with being grounded, but the Seel had little choice. She trailed behind Luella's hesitant pace, often bumping into the breeder's heels whenever Luella suddenly stopped to stare at the damage or chat up a staff member to catch up on what she missed overnight. The oddness of the situation wasn't helping Ena's nerves any better, but the Seel had to admit, it felt reassuring to be around people that seemed to know what they were doing. She waited patiently while Luella checked up on the Skrelp and Helioptile pair that she left at the Bubble Dome overnight, noting that both Pokemon seemed unnerved at the unnatural state of the room when the water kept creeping in through under the cracks of the door.
Honestly, Luella didn't blame them if they had trouble relaxing under these conditions. She figured it was worth a shot trying to breed a Skrelp during the storms, but she wasn't exactly expecting the breeding session to be interrupted by a flood. Great. She could only hope that the pairing she had in the other room was fairing better.

"What a time to stop by for a visit. This is mom's new place, Larry. Whaddaya think?" Danny wanted to sound optimistic at the thought of picking up the Helioptile egg he pestered his mom for over and over via text, and when he finally got the news that the breeding was a success, he decided that picking up this egg was worth risking the bad weather over. Larry whined in response, fumbling in his spot as the wind continued to tease and mock the Pelipper by playfully shoving him around. The rain would've been a joy if the torment of thunder and wind wasn't constantly keeping Larry on his feet, forcing him to make a beeline through the flooded parking lot with Danny chasing after him until they crashed past the sliding glass doors to the Bubble Dome.
The place normally would've been gorgeous if it wasn't for the mess of water that kept flooding in through the doors and the mess of workers that found themselves struggling to keep things orderly, clean, and safe for the aquarium Pokemon. Honestly, if he knew his mother didn't practically live here, he would've loved to waltz around the place as if he owned it. Preferentially when it didn't reek of lake water.
Shivering from the cold, Danny rubbed the goosebumps out of his arms until he noticed Luella sitting around on one of the wooden benches near the edge of the glassy dome. Noting the lack of an egg in her possession, he quietly groaned. Great, mom was going to milk him out of his time and energy as much as she could just so he could get this damn Helioptile egg. Upon seeing Danny approach, Luella quickly stood up with a mix of relief and fidgety excitement.
"Long time no see, ma. You're doing well." Truly, it had been some time since he last saw his mother in person. Usually they stayed in touch through text, email, or Facebook, but Danny found himself ignoring nearly all of her messages unless he could benefit from it directly. He was a shitty son, he knew it. But it was fair, right? Luella wasn't exactly the best mom to him either. It all worked out. Karma! That's right. It was karma, and he was like an enforcer.
"I'm hanging in there. You look pretty beat though. I know this place is a mess, but stick around. Wait some of the storm out." After patting Larry on the head with a small coo, she easily wrapped her arm around Danny's and started dragging him to the aquarium's cafe, regardless of whether it was open or not. All she wanted was a casual atmosphere with her son where they could talk as much as they liked, and all Danny wanted to do was get his shit and leave.
He loaaaathed mother-son bonding time, but he could never word exactly what it was about the experience that bothered him so much. Larry, being the traitor he was, sucked up all of Luella's attention by allowing her to pet him dry with the towels she picked up along the way. He even got to sit in her lap like a pet cat by the time they picked a quiet booth to sit in, leaving Danny to endure Luella's rambles about the storm while awkwardly sipping one of the fountain drinks Luella snuck out of the machine (she'd pay them back later, so no damage was done). In the end, Danny got his egg when the worst of the storm passed, and Luella was left humming happily to herself as she helped mop the place up, looking much brighter than the rest of the aquarium staff that were frantically trying to clean the place up.
