APPEARANCE
Gone is the gangly teenager that barely weight in at 140 lbs and here is the filled out and slightly more muscular gym leader. Sure he's nowhere near the physical fitness of some of the others and what muscles he does have generally came from him working with his Pokemon and training them to be the best they can be. His hair is often messy and despite his few friends horror he alternates between having stupid sideburns like his Daddy does. It doesn't look quite as good on him as it does the Coordinator parent but he likes it since its something different from what he used to have in high school.
His wardrobe could use an update, but that's always been the same since he was younger. He doesn't really care what he wears and plain black t-shirts or "dad" shirts are his usual attire. He does have around seven pairs of glasses though he keeps so many because he's practically blind without them. He can't see two feet in front of his face and that often causes him to lose them or accidentally step on them after haphazardly tossing them onto the nightstand when he lays down for bed. During a minor rebellious phase when he was first getting started he got his tongue pierced and just won't let himself let it close up. Most of the time you wouldn't even notice since more often than not he wears a clear set.
PERSONALITY
- Anxious: Yes he is very aware of the fact that his shirt has a very small stain on the corner of it that you probably can't even see but he is extremely aware of it. He's constantly worried that he's going to trip and fall and ruin everything. Or that the next Pokemon League representative that walks through the door is going to tell him he's lost his gym for something he wasn't even aware could get him in trouble. Maybe someone else who was better came along and now he isn't needed? Or they gave him his gym leader certification on accident when really they were supposed to send him on his way because he was a failure. All of these things weight on his mind constantly. He tries to internally talk himself down from it, knowing that this isn't the case but most of the time he just ends up internally screaming instead. Some days he's so plagued with anxiety he can barely drag himself up out of bed on his off days in order to train whenever it gets too bad.
- Determined: He has to be determined in order to climb over the mountain of anxiety that weights him down on a daily basis. He's determined to do the best he can as a gym leader and prove to everyone that was ever mean to him that he is worth something and that he can accomplish great things. He wants to be able to look back on his younger years and realize that all of the things he went through just made him a stronger person and that they are going to help him become a stronger gym leader. He's determined to show every boy and girl that go through the things he went through that things eventually can get better and that you can't give up. Even if it feels like there's no other way out.
- Suspicious: After years and years of pranks and people doing nice things for him only to have them backfire because of assholes Garrus is generally suspicious of people who are nice to him. Even if they're genuinely trying to just be his friend it takes him a little bit to get used to it. He's worn down from years of being pushed into a locker and fake dance invitations and it shows when he interacts with new people. Its not like he doesn't want to make new friends, it just takes him a little bit longer since the people he had to keep company with before generally treated him like shit or turned him into a walking joke.
- Gentle: Not so much with his gym opponents this more caters to how he treats his Pokemon and friends. He learned in middle school how to take care of bug Pokemon and its stuck with him through his entire life. A gentle touch and quiet encouragement are all they really need to be your best friend and he's perfectly willing to give them both. He has a soft spot for the Pokemon that kept him company when if felt like the world was falling in on him. They've been with him through thick and thin and they deserve the best treatment he can possibly give them.
- Restrained: Years of not fighting back and pushing down his emotions have caused him to have a little trouble expressing them, especially to people he doesn't know well. People mistake him for having a "cool, tough exterior" when in reality he just doesn't know how to properly show what emotion he's feeling without thinking about if he should show it first. By the time he's done thinking about it the moment has passed and he knows that he would look like an idiot if he changed it so long after. So he just lets himself do the thinking so that maybe in the future he'll be able to react more quickly with the proper reaction.
- Intelligent: Sure he dropped out of school but that didn't mean he stopped learning. If anything it helped him learn the things that were really important and things that he wanted to learn. He had plenty of time in between gym battles while his Pokemon were resting up to exercise his mind in town libraries and learning about the histories of the towns he stayed in. Not to mention there were plenty of other bug trainers to learn things from out there including gym leaders and while he didn't do anything other than battle them he learned a lot just from that. Now that he's a gym leader he reads even more, especially on nights he can't force himself to sleep.
- Humble: To be honest he'll defer any of his accomplishments to his Pokemon. They were the ones fighting and they were the ones giving it their all, he's just the guy that gives them a hand whenever they need it. He doesn't know how to handle compliments and often doesn't handle them well. He'll either go blank faced or if he knows the person well enough to actually react his face will turn redder than a tomato and he'll turn into a mumbling mess about how he doesn't really deserve the praise that they're giving him even if he obviously does. He doesn't see himself as anything special or important, just someone to help his Pokemon get where they want to be.
- Insomniac: Garrus doesn't sleep much and some days it really shows. Stumbling across the small kitchen he has to grab another cup of tea or warm milk to attempt to trick himself into thinking he's actually relaxed enough to either fall into bed or even pass out on the couch if he's lucky enough to get to that point that fast. Otherwise its hours of tossing and turning in bed before he either gets up and repeats the process or gives up entirely and goes to do something else so that maybe he'll work up to the point of being able to sleep.
- To make his family proud of him.
HISTORY
Standing all of Garrus' family side by side it would be easy to tell something that he learned from a very young age. Lacking the blonde hair and golden eyes his parent's and eventually younger brother had, not to mention the fact that both of his parent's were men, Garrus always knew that he was adopted. It was something to be proud of. His parent's had chosen him and they wanted him. Sure he wasn't as graceful as his coordinator Daddy or as personable as his trainer Dad but it never really seemed to matter to them. They were happy with their child and all of his strangeness. And then Grace was born. Their parent's never really shared the details about his younger brother's birth but for the longest time Dad had to sleep on the couch while Daddy cried a lot. His was a rough time which was probably part of the reason that the eldest Gregor was somewhat jealous of his new younger brother.
Grace was everything he wasn't and it showed. Even if he hadn't been better than his brother at nearly everything he still at least matched the rest of the family. His parents didn't love him any less than his brother but it was hard for little Garrus to really distinguish that. So instead of trying to really blend with the rest of his family he started to recluse. He'd spend lots of time in his room watching tv, mostly cartoons, and whenever he was at school he'd generally try to avoid the other kids. After all it was easy to pick on the adopted kid with a speech impediment that had two dads. It didn't take him long to realize that people were kind of shitty. That didn't stop him from trying though, and he tried so hard.
He tried too hard really and that's probably why he fell into so many of the bullies traps. Not that it was his fault since they shouldn't have been bullying him in the first place. They tricked him into staying after school late saying that they were going to meet up and go get food after school and for him to wait in the parking lot for them. One of the guys even asked him to the middle school dance only to laugh in his face when he shyly said yes. The worst of them all was a boy named Heath, who never stopped tormenting him all the way through his school career. He just simply stopped responding to them though and eventually they had to rely on pranks instead of his own eagerness to make friends.
His parents were extremely worried about the entire thing. They loved both of their sons and to see one of them in so much pain hurt them. They tried talking to him about it and made a special effort to try and show interest in the things that he did. His Daddy even showed him his MLP dvd's and they binged watched an entire season one weekend in their pajamas's for some quality bonding time. It did make him feel better, knowing that his family was there and that they cared about him. Garrus slowly began to open up about the bullying and his parents were furious. They marched right down to the school and demanded to know what sort of school was letting their son be bullied so badly that he was had refused to tell them about it.
There were some assemblies and promises to crack down on the zero tolerance bullying policy and with his parents swearing up and down that if they got word of anything that was even remotely considered bullying they would be back down to the school to raise hell. It worked for a little while and he went through the rest of the year with just minor things. A snide laugh here and occasionally his things would go missing. It wasn't anything he couldn't deal with and he was sure that going into high school it was probably going to be even better. After all there was nothing to say that things could get worse right? He managed to pick up a summer job out at a Combee farm whenever all the other kids went to camp or left to start their journeys.
He found himself spending his time out there even on his days off and grew to enjoy the company of the swarm of combee and vespiquen that called it home. The owner was friendly towards him as well, unlike his son Heath who didn't come near him whenever he was at work and instead it seemed like he went out of his way to avoid him. Thinking that it was just because of the thing with his parent's Garrus ignored it and continued to enjoy his work. Even after the school year started he would still go out there after it let out and help the old man take care of the Pokemon and bonding with them. His parents thought that he might possibly become a breeder, which they would have been immensely proud of if he had.
Then again even if he didn't know it they would have been proud of any choice he'd decided to make with his life. Unfortunately though good things didn't last and whenever he entered high school the bullying started up, only to be covered up with the words "boys will be boys". There would never be a phrase he hated so much as "boys will be boys" in his entire life because of the nightmare that mentality caused him. It turned him into a walking target because he was too small to fight back and just "perfect for picking on" as the gym teacher tried to explain it. It made it his fault just because he was too small, too different and gay. It was his fault that he got bullied and for the longest time he believed it.
It ranged from minor things, like being called Gay-rus, to full out assault. Being pushed into his locker and tripped in the hallway so that he would scatter everything he was carrying and be late for his next class. One time his glasses even shattered and cut his forehead when he landed on them. It didn't help anything that hormones began to surface and against his will his heart began to develop a crush on the very person he hated. His eyes wandered towards looking at Heath whenever he thought no one was looking and he absently scribbled his name in his journal at home. Unfortunately though someone did notice and he found himself stuck in the boys locker room with a group of homophobic teens who thought it was funny to spray him with alternating cold water and hot water. Jokes about him wanting to suck their dicks and them pushing his head in their crotches while he tried to push them away caused him to cry until they left him alone. Heath wasn't with them but that didn't mean that Garrus didn't hate him for what had happened.
He didn't want to bother his parents with it again and with Grace about to enter high school he didn't want his little brother to get picked on just because his older brother had gone and whined to their parents again. Instead he went out to the Combee Farm. It was going to be his last visit before he made all of the bullying and anxiety go away but one of the Combee had other ideas. She was a freshly hatched queen, one that he'd helped hatch with his own two hands near the end of the summer and she found him as soon as he stepped into the fields. Buzzing happily around him she couldn't quite understand why the human who had always been so kind to her suddenly burst into tears and collapsed on the ground. It did make her worry though and she stayed with him until he wore himself out.
Crying so much that he couldn't help but fall asleep. His boss found him next and took him home and the combee that stayed by his side followed and he let her. He could tell that Garrus needed her more than he needed another queen bee at the moment. When he woke up the next day in his own bed and his new Pokemon by his side he realized that there was a way out without ending his life. He dropped out of school that morning, with Maab by his side. Sure there were plenty of kids that saw her and laughed. After all how far could someone even get with a bug Pokemon? But he didn't listen to them. Instead he headed back home and explained to his parents what he had done and what he was going to do. It was sudden and they were surprised but they supported him. If he wanted to become a Pokemon trainer then they wouldn't stop him.
They encouraged him to call them if he ever needed anything and said they would send money whenever he needed it. His final goodbye was to his boss and with a cool indifference he walked past the boy who had caused him so much hell, even if it wasn't directly for part of it. Starting his journey was rough. He wasn't someone who was used to being outdoors and for the longest time camping outside made him sick. But his body got used to it and soon he began to enjoy it. Spending time training Maab and even catching a few new Pokemon he realized that he liked being a trainer.
It wasn't easy though. Sometimes his anxiety kept him from leaving a town for a few days or he'd end up having a panic attack before going to fight in another gym. He was reluctant to join in whenever other trainers were celebrating victories at the Pokemon Centers just in case it turned into a witch hunt on who they could bully before they had to move on to another location. It wasn't always like that though. Sometimes he felt confident in himself and pressed forward so well he thought that the anxiety and self doubt were gone for good. Only to be disappointed in himself a week later when it came crashing back and pulling him tumbling down once again.
After awhile though he wasn't sure what to do with himself, he trained and trained but nothing ever really settled his need to be better. He went home to visit his parents after a few years of just traveling different regions and gathering gym badges from them and asked them what he should do next. He was tired of the same thing over and over again and all of the regions were starting to look the same to him. They suggested he take the challenge of becoming a gym leader. After all he was strong and the bug type leader position was open meaning that if he wanted it he should go for it. He toyed with the idea for awhile before deciding that if he was going to do it then he should just go ahead and try.
It took him another couple of days to work up the courage but eventually he made his way over there with his team in tow. He almost didn't believe it when the testers final Pokemon fell and his still stood. He'd won. He'd actually won. Whenever he got home to tell his parent's he nearly cried tears of happiness because of it. Garrus never thought that he would actually amount to anything much less something so important as being a gym leader. He got everything set up and settled into his new life easily. Sure he wasn't traveling all over the world but he had a goal to work towards. And that was to be the best gym leader he possibly could.
