Good Rod upgradin'
283
As he was looking for another pier to fish off from, he was shocked to see that Rymi had… evolved. It was quite surprising, but long-awaited and especially overdue! Once the sudden lights show was over, he then saw that Rymi was no longer the shy, stammering Ralts that liked to hide behind his leg; but was now one that loved to spin around and dance like a madman! “Well, well… nice move there,” he said, stooping down and then patting the now-Kirlia on his head, to which he reacted and continued to spin like he would never get dizzy. “Now then, we have to keep looking. We just honestly need one more and then we get that shining, shimmering, spanking-new Good Rod. You up to it?” he asked the Kirlia, and with a nod, the two then set off, finally finding another rickety-looking piece of wood that had been constructed, sticking out into the water for people to try fishing from.
He also had the somewhat-dry shirt now as well as the camera bag, and shortly re-erected the makeshift stand to which he then tossed the shirt on, along with the bag; before drawing back and flinging the Old Rod out into the water, watching the float sink down before bobbing up onto the surface. This time, the Kirlia stood in front of Kouji, ready to take out whatever nasty would come flying out of there and challenge them both! I just need one more… one more tentacle-infested monster… then I’m on my way to better and more stable fishing! He thought, hoping that the line would twitch and give him the one last tentacle monster that he needed for the upgrade…

After he had dropped the line, Kouji then decided to whistle; which made the Kirlia in front of him dance like a complete madman! Wondering if his happy mood affected him as well, he then started to whistle different tunes and watched with some amusement at the reaction he was getting from the Kirlia—boy did he love dancing indeed. “So you’re affected by my mood, eh?” he said a few moments later, watching the Kirlia twirl and spin without even getting dizzy. After a few moments of watching the Kirlia, he blinked—because his eyes were not just getting dry, he was also slightly getting dizzy just looking at the spinning Pokémon in front of him. Right then and there the Old Rod began twitching, and he then dug in his feet, throwing his entire body weight against the tension of the line—because he’d already seen some of his fellow fishers getting dragged around by whatever they had managed to hook on the other end of the line; and some of them had even taken an unlucky dip off the pier into the water if they didn’t learn how to fight against the force opposing the end of the line!
A few moments of struggling alter, he then heard a very loud thudding noise on the pier, and then looked at what he had caught—it was something that looked like a clam; otherwise it… wasn’t very appealing. Not only that but he looks ridiculously weak… he thought to himself as he then hefted the line with both hands and walked past the confused Kirlia that was now looking at what he was doing. “Nope, not the thing we need, sorry,” he said in apology to the dancing ‘mon that had begun twirling around again as he shook off the Clamperl and dropped it back into the water. He then checked the line and then made sure that the floater was still whole, and then resumed his usual; spot in the pier, bearing back a few before tossing out the line to try his luck once again! Alright, let’s see what I get this time around… he thought to himself as the floater sunk, before bobbing back up on the ocean’s surface.

After what felt like another eternity, Kouji then felt something pulling at the opposite end of his line; and although it wasn’t as strong as the other presence was earlier, he knew that even this one was going to put up a fight because it had been disturbed out of its natural habitat! He then dug his feet into the pier as whatever he’d hooked started to swim away from the line that had snagged it, but he was stronger—he could feel the tension in his muscles as he then pulled backwards with all his might and then saw a familiar-shaped shadow fly from the line and land with a very wet thud on the pier—it was another Staryu! He was already familiar with its shape by this point, and then he sighed; which caused the Kirlia to step backwards out of confusion! “Oh, shoot, not this guy again…” he muttered to himself as he then picked it up and then watched as its red core just…glowered, or rather sparkled, in his face.
“Well, sorry. Not this one either,” he continued, quickly hefting backwards and then chucking the Staryu out into the water, hearing it land with a splash in the water. “Next. Definitely not what we need,” he continued, as he picked up the line once again and then bore back before casting it out into the water. At this point, the Kirlia had decided to sit down and just wait—because his master was apparently a very finicky and picky fisher; the first two ‘mons he had encountered were not to his liking! Sorry Rymi, I’m just really on the lookout for that Tentacool. Just one more! Come on! He thought to himself as the line then landed in the water, the floater sinking for a few moments before reappearing on the surface once again.

After hefting the Staryu back into the water and then setting the fishing line down again, Kouji then sat himself down as well—because honestly he was getting tired of all that standing, not only was it killing his legs, his feet felt really sore. Even after all that fishing I still feel tired, meh, this is horrible… he thought to himself as the floater started twitching, but no struggle happened. “Pfft, false alarm,” he muttered as he continued to wait, letting the line sit loosely in-between his crossed legs; the Kirlia that was seated in front of him then turned around and then looked at him out of confusion as well! He then waved him to face forward, and then tried to lean around said Kirlia to look out at the surface of the water—nothing was happening. It wasn’t until ten minutes later that the fishing rod nearly flew into the water; prompting a mad scramble for the airborne pole! “Arrrgh! Great, what now?!” he shouted as he very nearly pitched forward and almost fell into the water, stopping very close to the edge of the pier, the Kirlia almost falling off to one side due to his sudden action!
There were bubbles coming from the point where the floater was, and then yet another titanic struggle of epic proportions resumed as he then pitched all his weight backwards, trying to get back into the “safety zone”, wrestling with the wire that was now pulled to the breaking point! “Come on, come on!” he growled as he then heaved backwards and fell on his behind—and seeing another shadow fly far above him, before landing with a wet thud on the pier. The Kirlia then stepped forward—and he saw that he’d hooked some sort of a crab… “Well, definitely not…” he muttered as he then made a waving motion towards the Kirlia, letting Rymista do his own “thing”. After a while, the Kirlia had managed to drive off the Krabby without even attacking it, and he then heard a loud splashing noise as the Krabby jumped back into the water, annoyed but otherwise unharmed. “Wow. You’re a good negotiator,” he said in the Kirlia’s direction, before picking up the line and then tossing it out for the next attempt…

Jaws attack

Things were too good to last—Kouji knew that something bad was going to happen the moment the line hit the water. He just had this feeling that something was coming; and the sudden bubbling of the water that he could see was a sign of it. “Oh shit,” he hissed, standing up and looking out over the surface and seeing a racing, incoming stream of bubbles head his way. “Rymi, get up. Things are going to get a bit dicey… literally,” he said, quickly plucking another Pokeball and then sending out Alexander as well; the Kirlia was surprised to see that there was a Dusclops standing beside it now. “Well, you two. Work together, because whatever is out there is going to be evil…” he trailed off as he backed up and then watched as one, then two, then several more fins appeared, breaking the surface. As if there was a sudden agreement, a sudden roar shook the pier, but it didn’t intimidate the Dusclops and the Kirlia that were waiting on the edge. He then picked up the Old Rod and then hoisted it out of the water as the roars became more and more evident—the fins that had broken the surface of the water were actually a pack of Carvanha, being led by one single Sharpedo!
“Oh dear,” he began, suddenly realizing that there was potential… “Alex, Rymi, be careful. I know these guys mean business. So let’s go!” he shouted, pointing forward and the two ‘mons out then got into position; Dusclops acting as the point, with Kirlia behind it, and then the horde then surfaced from the water with an ear-splitting Screech! To hear it once was bad enough, but to have it multiplied five, six times was just absolute horror. Even he was forced to clap his hands onto his ears; it was like someone had played the musical saw on full volume and had locked it on “Repeat”. He also knew that hearing that many Screech attacks had harshly dropped down his ‘mons defenses to their bare minimum levels—thus he was going up against a stalwart tank of “piranhas” that were now aggressively beginning to swarm. “Hoo boy. Alright! Let’s get this started. You two be very careful, I know that a few hits would mean absolute trouble for you both! Alex, transport Rymi with your Shadow Sneak, and once you’re out above the water… give it your all, let’s try out that new punching move you two guys picked up on,” he said, standing back and crossing his arms, putting his absolute faith into his two leads right now.
“Clops.”
“Kir!”
The Dusclops then proceeded behind the Kirlia, taking hold if its partner’s limbs and then suddenly vanishing into the shadows—and that’s when utter bedlam and chaos began; the Carvanha then unleashed a mass Agility boost—as if that was bad enough, it made them even faster than ever—and then the lone Sharpedo hanging back gave another roar, stating that mass murder would commence—and that’s when the Dusclops appeared, a few feet above the water—before dropping its companion off, which then aimed a Thunder Punch right on the water’s surface; and then a crackling noise erupted, causing all ‘mon’s in the water to thrash violently! Kouji could see what was happening out on the pier, and then continued, “Rymi! Double Team onto the nearest ‘platform’ you can find, and then unleash your Leaf Storm! Alex, have covering fire with Thunder Punch as well, try to take out the Sharpedo before they cause any more trouble!”
The Dusclops then hung back, glowering as it levitated above the water—and then said Sharpedo tried to take a Slash at it; however it had completely missed, since the motion just passed through the Ghost-type! The Dusclops then smirked, before aiming its own electrified fist right at the Sharpedo’s snout, causing an explosion of sparks to erupt upon impact—and the Sharpedo howled in pain! Back over at where the Kirlia was now “flying” above the surface of the water, it had used Double Team before landing—and the Carvanha horde that had seen it descending rabidly started snapping their jaws in an extremely aggressive manner, launching all manners of Bite and Crunch, but only hitting afterimages. The Kirlia had somehow landed above the head of one of the Carvanha that had already tried to snap at the fake images, before it quickly concentrated and conjured up one, then two, then three instances of Magical Leaf—this was what Kouji meant by “Leaf Storm”, because it was his Kirlia’s only other attack that could cause massive mayhem on a wider scale without risking the chance of getting injured or bitten to death. Once the three waves of leaves were shimmering in existence, the Kirlia then let it fly towards the incoming Carvanha that looked ready to bite its arms off with a Crunch attack!
Seeing this mayhem happen, he continued, “Alright, Rymi, go and continue using your Thunder Punch, the Carvanha are going to be bothered by those leaves for a while! Double Team if necessary, because that Screech really did a number on you! Alex! Continue covering fire with surprise Thunder Punch!” he called out to the Dusclops that was much further out at “sea”, tussling with the Sharpedo that was still adamant on using Slash but ending up hitting floating air instead! The Dusclops could only chuckle at the Sharpedo’s feeble attempts to continue hitting it with a Normal-type attack—at the last second it switched to a Crunch attack, only to be met with the electrified fist of the Dusclops that it was trying to bite out of the air! Back at where the Kirlia was now “hopping” above the heads of the Carvanha that were trying to break loose from the Magical Leaf attacks that were now swirling around them, the Kirlia then saw an opening and quickly charged up its fist with electric power and then took a blind shot—aiming the Thunder Punch attack in the middle of the swirling leaves, and heard several howls of surprise.
The victory was short-lived, though—one of the other Carvanha had managed to leap up and had taken the chance of launching a Crunch attack on the Kirlia; combined with the effects of the Screech spam earlier, it had taken a damaging blow; at least in terms of its Health points. “Rymi!” he shouted from the pier, seeing the Carvanha that had bitten the Kirlia’s leg. “Get out of there now!” he screamed; and then watched as the Kirlia then reached down and then used a surprise Thunder Punch on the Carvanha that had bitten its leg. It then let out another roar of surprise, before it then used Double Team to dart out of the way—yet there was another Carvanha who was waiting for it at the opposite end of the “line”, closest to where it had chosen to “land”, and then quickly fired off a surprise Aqua Jet that pummeled the Kirlia back out towards where the Carvanha were now regrouping; having freed themselves of the Magical Leaf / Thunder Punch surprise attack.
“Oh, shit,” he hissed again, and then cupped his hands so that his voice could carry, “Alex! Forget about that Sharpedo for now, help Rymi with the Carvanha problem! Thunder Punch everything that’ll get in your way!” he shouted, watching in silent horror as the shell-shocked Kirlia was sent flying back towards the eagerly-waiting Carvanha gathering, jaws snapping hungrily. The Dusclops then used the beginning half of Shadow Sneak in order to be able to get to the place much quicker; but instead of using the other half of the attack, caught the Kirlia and then disappeared from sight, just as the Carvanha started snapping their jaws at thin air. Back over on and, the Dusclops then appeared once again from the shadows, carrying the battle-worn Kirlia; and Kouji could see the extent of the damage; its leg was actually bleeding due to the Carvanha that had bitten down a lot harder than it should have on it! “Oh, hell they did not just do that!” he shouted, quickly plucking two more Pokeballs from his shorts and then sending out Elizabeth, his Mismagius and Hiekka, his Krookodile.
As the other two ‘mons reappeared, he then knew that having Beth out was a better chance, since she had Power Gem, a move she could use without getting hit too much; while Hiekka always had Earthquake ready; however the risk of calling a potential tidal wave was high—but he tossed that out the window anyway; and then started the counter-attack. “Beth, go further out and Power Gem the shark over there. Hie, try not to overdo it, but use Scary Face and Earthquake and bunch up those piranhas so that I can include Alex and Rymi back in the fray… I have to get to something first,” he ended with a distracted mutter as the two then gleefully strode forward to do what they needed to; and he returned towards where the injured Kirlia was. “Tsk, those things are evil,” he hissed as he quickly opened up his camera bag and revealed his handy first-aid kit; ever since the Treecko incident he knew it was best to always be prepared and have it on him at all times. Once the Dusclops had set down the Kirlia, he then pointed backwards over his shoulder, and then continued, “Alex, help Beth out and go Thunder Punch everything else that’s not your companions for me, will you?”
“Clops,” he heard the Ghost-type chime in, before he watched it float out to assist the Mismagius that was now thwacking the Sharpedo with Power Gem from all possible directions it could come from—because the Sharpedo was just a bit on the slow side and continued to try using Slash but ended up hitting nothing but air. He then got back to where the Kirlia was, injured and leg bleeding, and hissed through his teeth. “Alright, Rymi, bear with me. Got to get you patched up before we can actually continue and catch those things,” he said as he got to work. Back at the scene of the battle, the Dusclops was now coming in for a 1-2 attack; after the Sharpedo would try to hit the much faster Mismagius that was trolling it with its Power Gem from whatever direction it was floating to, it would then sneak up and then unleash a Thunder Punch, and the Dusclops would swoop out of the way; not realizing that the contact with its skin was hazardous to its health! The Krookodile was now having so much fun as it began leering in the aggressive Carvanha’s direction; utilizing its Scary Face over and over; trolling the snapping piranhas back from the pier.
As Kouji finished wrapping up the Kirlia’s bleeding leg, he then saw that Rymi was looking over at the fray, and then sighed. “What, you want to join them again?” he asked, to which it nodded. “But… oh, alright, if you wish. Just be careful. Help Hie as much as you can, okay?” he muttered, and watched as the Kirlia then got up on wobbly legs, before managing a limping stride; before the Krookodile then helped him stand up; and then watched as his companion then held its hands high, before summoning one, two, three waves of swirling leaves made from its own power; and then unleashing the successive waves of Magical Leaf towards the confused Carvanha! The pack then retaliated by trying to get another bite of the ‘mons that were trolling it from the pier were suddenly assaulted with another torrential wave of swirling leaves that they could not avoid. “Go, Alex! Grab Rymi and then go all-out! Just be careful!” he shouted from the pier, and the Mismagius then fell back with one last Power Gem that had smacked the Sharpedo’s snout, causing it to yelp out of surprise as it then flopped over and floated, knocked out due to trying to chase the floating “troller” of a Mismagius!
The Krookodile then fell back with one last stomp on the pier; and then Kouji braced himself as the entire area started shaking wildly; the effects it had caused out on the surface of the water was that it had knocked the five remaining Carvanha together (one had fled the fray) before the sudden dropping appearance of a Kirlia that was being supported by a floating Dusclops’ limbs made its appearance—and then sent a series of successive Thunder Punches out on the surface of the water! After the last punch had been thrown, the Dusclops then floated high, before letting the Kirlia fly and the Mismagius made way to catch its flying companion; before sinking down to the now-electrified surface of the water and unleashing its own gauntlet of Thunder Punch attacks on the unsuspecting Carvanha that were now shell-shocked, and another electrifying round of attacks then zapped the floating piranhas together; before they started floating on the surface of the water, all too stunned to even move!
The Mismagius then made it back with its convoyed Kirlia and then let its passenger off, before the Dusclops re-emerged from the shadows a few moments later, quite proud of its messy handiwork. “Well, so much for them trying to eat us all up. Thanks for supporting Alex and Rymi, Beth; Hie,” he continued, patting the snout of the Krookodile and then giving the Mismagius an affectionate pat as well before recalling them back first; leaving out the Dusclops and the Kirlia. He then dug around his shorts pockets and then pulled out five Dive Balls and one Ultra Ball; and then quickly let them fly towards the surface of the water; watching as six of the seven horde then vanished into their respective Pokeballs…

off to sell them!

Kouji then breathed a sigh of relief as the Dive Balls and Ultra Ball clicked, signifying that they were now caught and ready to be shipped out. The slight problem now here was, how was he going to get them, because right then and there they started dropping towards the water! “Ah snap, Alex, go catch them!” he said, and the Dusclops quickly floated towards the water and managed to catch all of the falling Dive Balls and Ultra Ball, since they almost hit the surface of the water! The Dusclops then breathed a sigh of relief, because he had caught them all, and then levitated back towards the pier, before dropping them all at his feet. He could see most of the Carvanha were glowering at him; but one of them had a softer expression—this was the one he was going to keep, because all the others were going to be eventually shipped out; someone wanted two of them, another person wanted one of each, and well, the last one was definitely going to his sponsor, since he knew that she wanted one of them and that they were on that wish list of hers that was as long as a kid’s gift list before Christmas!
“She’s so going to kill me when he finds out how I caught these guys…” he muttered to himself as he then scooped up all six occupied balls and then watched as they were whisked off to a special compartment on his PC storage; normally any and all of his ‘mons that were caught were sent to the Ranch to roam free, but in some cases they were diverted to another place; which was his own online stall. “The power of technology is so deep, you know,” he continued, petting the Dusclops and the Kirlia on their heads before recalling them—he had a very long day; but at least now he was going to be the proud owner of a Good Rod, since he’d caught more than three Carvanha in one go just a few moments ago!
