Charlotte was not used to travelling so much, but the professor was currently short-staffed, and so had to make some compromises in order to achieve her goals. Starting a new breeding site was no joke, and if she wanted to start of well, the first thing to do was get a wide selection of Pokemon for breeding. More importantly, the notifications for swarms always included one or two Pokemon with the rare ability that was always popular for trainers.
Today's catch was the mysterious Magnemite. Studies showed that the Magnet Pokemon was a sentient being despite physiology showing signs of mechanical parts, with no obvious body parts where the heart or brain should be located. Needless to say, it showed capable of showing emotions just like any other Pokemon and even the need to feed or eat. Though scarce in the wild, due it's strong magnetic aura, it would almost always be attracted to areas with the same or stronger magnetic energy. Which is why, she theorized that such an industrialized location as Saffron City would be the perfect gathering for the tiny flying bolts. More importantly, she wanted one for herself. The Magnemite's existance predated thousands of years ago, and it remained the same way still.
Aside from being a breeding Pokemon, she wanted to study one.
Now, the problem was finding one. Saffron city was quite a metallic jungle with buildings and houses spreading for quite a far. It was the metropolis for commerce in the Kanto Region, and as much as she wanted to do a little shopping, it would have to wait. Standing in the streets of the city, she took to taking the dark alleys to avoid the crowd. It was a tactical move to increase her chances for finding a Magnemite, because despite their attraction to man-made buildings, they tended to avoid any contact with human beings.
Murky, dirty and narrow, it would not bode her well to have a fight in this area so she would probably have to head to a more open yet secluded place from outside eyes and ears. It was quite some time before Charlotte would weave through the dark alleys of Saffron City until she came to a wide opening. Inspecting the surroundings, it seemed as if she had come across a deserted warehouse. No sight of a Magnemite yet.
She walked to the center of the abandoned warehouse and took out one Pokeball...
"Banter, come out!" A red beam materialized the Bright Pokemon out of it's containment unit, and greeted Charlotte with a cheerful salute.
"Wynaut!!"
Charlotte paid no mind as she scanned the surroundings for any sign of a Magnemite... and found it. Well, actually it found her. A stream of blue lighting narrowly missed her had by a hair's breath. Right above them, was the silhouette of a small floating ball reflecting sunlight. Though, she couldn't visibly identify it, she knew it was a what she was looking for...
MAGNEMITE The Magnet Pokemon
Ability: Analytic
MOVES:
Flash Cannon
Metal Sound
Discharge
Thunder Wave
"Mag!!" A very angry Magnemite floated down from below, clearly the only eye it had was glaring at them. Charlotte raised one eyebrow at the pokemon's display of anger. Usually, things would be angry at her after she had done something not before she did anything. She gave one look at Wynaut, who was now pumped up and ready to fight, seemingly to say that no one messed with her so long as he was there.
"Be ready, Wynaut. This is not a practice match." Just as she said that, the Magnemite did not waste time and fired another Thunder Wave their way, clearly aiming for Charlotte. The professor merely sighed and shook her head.
"Wynaut, set up a Safeguard."
"Wy!!"The orders were clear and Wynaut was happy to oblige. His body became surrounded by a light green haze which materialized into a wave which surrounded the parameter around Wynaut. The blue sparks dwindle down as they came in contact with the misty barrier and wynaut made a jumpy triumph. The magnemite gave another glare at Wynaut.
Charlotte watched the Magnemite with an interesting afterthought. For a living pile of junk, it sure was lively. It swirled around in circle in a fit of anger, upset that it had it's move so aimlessly dismissed.
"Magne...mite!"
The Magnet pokemon started vibrating violently and released a shrill sound, characterized by rings of silvery light. Charlotte recognized the move. It was metal sound, a status move designed to lower the Pokemon's Sp. Defense. Maybe it was planning to take out Wynaut in one hit? As if that could ever happen. Wynaut would suffer a huge amount of damage, but it would survive to deal the finishing blow.
If the metallic eyeball wanted to finish then, she would give him the pleasure of doing so.
"Wynaut... stay where you are." She smiled a little, laughing internally at Wynaut, who was resisting to look at her in doubt. Deep inside, she knew the Bright Pokemon was searching for a reason behind her words. Nevertheless, Wynaut did as he was told and stayed to receive the in coming Metal Sound. To be quite frank, it looked quite painful. Wynaut had this really depressed look on his face, and was forcing to bear the sound of metal clashing loudly.
"Perfect... the bait as been set up." And it really was, considering how hyped the Magnemite was when his Metal Sound made contact with Wynaut. After a bit of basking on it's own glory, it began to light up, concentrating silver light in a single orb and fired it at Wynaut in a straight beam.
And now, you're mine... Charlotte thought to herself. Wynaut was still a bit.. sore, from the painful ringing, and now he was seeing a flash of white about to him. In the spirit of his species, he knew what to do and what Charlotte's plan was immediately.
"Wynaut, return fire with Mirror coat!!" Upon impact, the Bright Pokemon's body was enveloped in a transparent multi colored aura that absorbed the Flash cannon and returned it, with twice as much power. The beam went straight through Magnemite who was a little too slow to react causing a large explosion. When the smoke cleared, the Magnemite was no longer floating high in the air but fainted on the ground. The same was for Wynaut, who wasn't exactly fainted, but with the amount of health it had left, he might as well be.
Charlotte threw one Pokeball at the metallic ball on the ground and waited patiently till it was captured for good.
That was Josh's reaction, of course, to taking an electric attack from a Magnemite while wandering the area. He didn't know how he'd pissed it off, until he realized there was an electric magnet on his shoulder in the form of a Pikachu who'd been swatting the thing away ever since it started following them. "Pika!" Lightning let out as he watched his Trainer get shocked before turning to the Magnemite as he hopped off the recovering Josh's shoulder. "Pika..." Lightning growled as his cheeks sparked. "Lightning, stop" Josh said. "Relax, Magnimite are very resistant to electric types" he said as he managed to get his bearings. "I'll..."
One of his Pokeballs opened and a stubborn Ace would fly out. He seemed... Daring today, Josh couldn't pick it up but his Pidgeotto had seemed different lately. More eager to battle, more headstrong and willing to take on anything, even if at a disadvantage. Josh sighed. He knew there was no changing Ace's mind. He'd nod over at Lightning before looking over at Ace. "Alright buddy, if you think you can take this guy, I believe in you" Josh said, breathing. "Watch out for it's electric attacks!" Josh called as the Magnimite would shoot a Discharge attack Ace's way. "Pidgooo!" Ace let out as he divebombed down to avoid it. "Quick Attack!" Josh called and Ace would pull a u-turn in order to pick up speed and ram himself into the Magnimite, sending it back with a "CLUNK" sound. "Magnemite!" it let out angrily as it suddenly let out massive sound waves, a Screech attack that caused Josh's hands to go to his ears.
"Gaaaah.... That's it's Screech attack!" Josh called. Ace was having a hard time flying with those kind of issues, he noticed. "Ace, you need to snap out of it and hit it with a Wing Attack!" Josh called despite the loud noise, that ear-piercing Screech...
"PIDGOOOO!" Ace let out defiantly as he would try and overcome the sounds, his wings glowing as he managed to ram them into the Magnemite, sending it back. Of course, that took it's toll on Ace as the Pidgeotto would start falling. "Ace!" Josh called out, but it was too late as the Magnemite would suddenly start charging it's Flash Cannon...
Direct hit. It managed to strike Ace in mid-air, and the Pidgeotto would crash to the ground. "Ace, use Roost!" Josh called as he would run and stand in front of the Pidgeotto to allow it to recover. The Magnemite would angrily try to fly around Josh to finish Ace with Discharge, but at every turn the blonde used his own body as a block everytime it tried to aim for the Pidgeotto. Finally it gave up and aimed a Discharge at Josh. Ace had enough, once Josh had bought him enough time, and would stop it, hitting Magnemite with Quick Attack as it was charging the attack.
The Magnemite would hit the ground and Josh would toss the Pokeball quickly.
Though Thomas was very reluctant to return to Saffron City, especially due to some very bad memories about the place, namely his reunion with a long lost friend, and a nearly successful attempt on his life after an intense and painful battle. However, upon hearing about the Magnemite Swarm, Thomas braved his dislike of the Kanto region for once, and decided to cash in on it.
Besides, he was so close to the point where he would feel confident enough to hunt down the thieves in the Viridian Forest, so he would have to return to the Region where everything went to hell for him anyway. And on top of that, he had a Karrablast to train for a client, one that would greatly benefit from battling Magnemite, especially with one of his egg moves.
The Karrablast wasn’t the only Pokemon being brought along for the ride today. Along with the blue beetle was a Pichu baring a confident grin. Jack was there to draw out the electrical attacks of the Magnemites and take advantage of them. This would especially come in handy with one of the other three being brought on for this assignment: Hotsuma the Froakie. Without having to worry about the electrical attacks of the Magnemites for a bit, he’d be free to do some work on the Magnemites. And finally, Conan the Charmander was there to assist the group, due to his tying providing another advantage against their targets.
Thomas moved through the area where they were reported to be quietly. Hotsuma and Conan moved by his side, while Jack and the Karrablast he was training were hidden. After a few minutes of searching, they spotted a cluster of four Magnemites. He signaled the group for the Charmander and the Froakie to get the attention of the Magnemites while Pichu moved up to an elevated position quietly, and Karrablast would flank them and ambush them at the right moment.
The Charmander jumped out, giving its best attempt at a roar in a boisterous manner. Hotsuma himself simply started forming a Water Pulse in his hands, watching as the Magnemites turned to face them. Immediately, keeping the diversion up, the Shiny Froakie fired off the Water Pulse from his hands, hitting one of the Magnemites dead center. However, judging from the movements after the initial stagger, the Magnemite evidently wasn’t confused by the attack at all. Meanwhile, Conan quickly launched a Flamethrower, hitting another of the Magnemites. Unfortunately, it didn’t manage to burn it.
In retaliation, the two Magnemite who weren’t hit immediately locked onto the two attackers, and fired off Thunder Waves at it. Meanwhile, the two that were hit also locked onto their prey, but letting loose Flash Cannons at it. The metallic blasts hit their marks, staggering back the duo, causing them to cry out in pain. The attacks, despite being resisted by the duo, hit them heavily.
Unfortunately for them, while the steely blasts hit their targets, the Thunder Waves somehow traveled to a nearby elevated area, right to a Pichu, who cried out boisterously as the electricity empowered him. The two looked at the Pichu, noting that it was drawing in their Thunder Waves, and thus was a major threat to them.
“Good work, Jack!”, called out Thomas to the Pichu. This brought the Magnemite’s attention to the trainer, their main threat.
But before either of the two could attack the Pichu, a Karrablast jumped off another elevation from the side, rotating around wildly like a drill as he approached one of the Magnemites, the one who was hit by the Water Pulse earlier. The sneak attack caught the group off guard, and the Magnemite hit was immediately brought down, its eye closing and falling to the ground with a loud, heavy thud after being hit by the Ground-type move.
In response to their comrade going down, and the presence of a Ground-type attack, the group immediately resorted to using Magnet Rise in order to float higher, out of the reach of the Karrablast that ambushed them.
Their priority now was to eliminate the Pichu that was preventing them from stunning their targets, so the remaining three proceeded to lock onto their current prey. However, before they could launch their attack against the Pichu, Thomas would call out to his Pokemon.
“Conan, use Smokescreen, then Flamethrower again! Froakie, use Bubble, then Water Pulse! Karrablast, use Mega Horn!”, ordered the trainer.
With this, the Charmander and Froakie would retaliate for the earlier bombardment of Flash Cannons. The Charmander would unleash a thick smokescreen near where the Magnemites were. Meanwhile, Hotsuma was throwing around bubbles, but not to attack them. Rather, he was clouding the area with them in an attempt to aid Conan in his efforts to reduce visibility in the area. As before, the Charmander would launch a Flamethrower at the Magnemite he attacked before, finishing it off, while the Froakie would blast the other one with a Water Pulse. The Karrablast would attempt to aid the Froakie by launching itself at the Magnemite who was staggering from the Water Pulse with his Mega Horn. Unfortunately, all he ended up doing was missing his mark, and falling to the ground, and into the thick smokescreen.
After recovering, the Magnemite hit by the Water Pulse turned to the Pichu, along with its comrade, and both fired off Flash Cannons. And though Jack attempted to dodge the attacks, they were locked onto his position. He didn’t stand a chance as he was blasted off the area he was on, falling to the ground unconscious. Thankfully, it wasn’t long enough of a drop to kill him. But after everything, the hindrances to their visibility wasn’t enough to take on the power of Lock-On. Worst of all, the remaining three were now vulnerable to Thunder Wave.
"JACK!", cried out Thomas as he started rushing to catch the Pichu, regardless of whether or not the fall would kill him. Thankfully, he managed to successfully dive to the ground in time to get the Pichu in his hands, who he immediately started to pet reassuringly.
“You did a good job, Jack…”, Thomas said to the unconscious Pokemon.
Meanwhile, the currently unharmed Magnemite would blast the grounded Karrablast with a Flash Cannon, sending him flying, and putting him on the edge of being knocked out. Meanwhile, the other Magnemite, who ate the Water Pulse earlier, launched a Thunder Wave at the Charmander, paralyzing Conan, making it harder for him to move.
“Conan, try to use Flamethrower! Hotsuma, go for another Water Pulse!”, ordered Thomas as he got up, recalling Jack to his Pokeball in the process.
Despite his hindered muscles, the Charmander was able to launch another Flamethrower at the Magnemite in retaliation. Unfortunately, due to his slowed movements, the Magnemite was able to read him easily, and float to the side of the stream of fire. Meanwhile, the Froakie launched a Water Pulse at his target from earlier. And unlike his comrade, the Froakie’s movements were swift enough that he was able to act swiftly enough to not give the magnet another Water Pulse, causing it to stagger back again. Though it didn’t go down, it looked pretty bad for it.
In response, the Magnemite launched another Thunder Wave, this time at the Froakie. It then followed it up with a Flash Cannon at the Froakie that was causing it so much distress. The Froakie was unable to move out of the way in time, and was blasted back into the wall, now at the brink of unconsciousness. Meanwhile, the Magnemite from before launched a Flash Cannon at the Charmander, bringing Conan to the same situation as Hotsuma: paralyzed and nearly out of the game.
However, Conan’s fire seemed to further radiate from this, Blaze triggering. Hotuma’s bubbles became thicker, Torrent activating for him. While at the brink of unconsciousness, the two of them were now powered up by their abilities.
"Alright you two, Flamethrower and Water Pulse, best you can!", ordered Thomas, seeing their pain empowered auras.
And despite taking all of Conan’s strength, he launched a Flamethrower at the wounded Magnemite, hoping to put him out of commission. This time, the Magnemite, who was paying attention to the Froakie, failed to notice in time, and was roasted by the attack, its metal exterior glowing red as it hit the ground violently. Hotsuma had an easier time moving to create a Water Pulse, launching it at the other Magnemite, who was also paying attention to the other opponent, being launched backwards by the empowered Water Pulse, sending it flying back.
Unfortunately, this failed to confuse the Magnemite, who simply launched a Flash Cannon at the Shiny Froakie, knocking it unconscious.
“HOTSUMA!”, shouted Thomas.
It then launched a Flash Cannon at the downed Karrablast, sending it flying into a wall. Chillingly enough, Thomas didn’t seem to react to the Karrablast being knocked out. Did he truly not care for the insect, due to the fact that it wasn’t his own? In any case, with it seemingly out of the picture, it turned its attention to Conan. The Charmander, somehow managing to work up the will to fight his condition, managed to launch one last empowered Flamethrower at the Magnemite. The Magnemite was able to strafe out of the way of the attack in time. It then locked onto the Charmander, before launching another Flash Cannon at it, knocking it unconscious.
“Shit!”, exclaimed Thomas at seemingly all of his Pokemon being knocked out, save for two unused Pokeballs. But before he could get to them, the last Magnemite’s attention turned to him, and with its Magnet Rise expired, floated towards him at a lower level. It began to charge up another Flash Cannon. But before that could happen, something blue and battered jumped out of the smog, leaping and spinning rapidly towards the Magnemite’s back. It didn’t even get the chance to turn around before its eye went wide. It then closed, and fell to the ground.
The Karrablast, who had used Endure to remain conscious through the second blow, slumped to the ground, his breathing labored. Thomas looked to the Karrablast with a smile. He knew that the Karrablast had used Endure, and was just waiting for the right moment to strike, just like he had instructed him in basic training.
“Good work, buddy…”, Thomas told the thing before recalling Hotsuma and Conan, then tossing a Pokeball each at the fallen Magnemite.
The plane ride to Kanto had been nothing special, and as Bailey sat in his seat, his headphones over his ears and eyes closed, beautiful colors crossing across his black vision, he couldn't help but think about the last time he had been there. A few years ago, when he was conducting research on his thesis, he had traveled to Kanto. Nothing special, really, but it was a pleasant experience until he noticed some rather odd posters. In fact, it was in Saffron City, where he was headed now, that had the posters. They were obviously old, the tattered edges giving that away, but the fact they still stood was enough to send a chill down the then even younger red head. Those few posters he saw were recruitment fliers for Team Rocket, a disastrous and horrible team everyone thought, and hoped, to be gone.
That, however, wasn't going to keep him from doing what he needed to do. There were reports of large numbers of Magnemite swarming around the power lines of the city, and so the officials were asking trainers to come capture them. Bailey, on the other hand, wished to study them and what better way to obtain one that to go where they flock? Once he was in the city it was time to get to business.
Bailey headed out towards a power station with Trema following behind, her little fin on top her head waving in the wind. The Mudkip was proving more than useful with defending him and itself, plus she was able to detect the seismic waves that pulsed throughout the ground. After walking for no more than twenty minutes, the pair came upon a lone Magnemite feasting on a power station. A click of his tongue was all it took to get Trema into action. Rushing towards the floating ball of steel, who was too busy eating to notice her, Trema got some mud on her tail and hurled it at the pokemon, most definitely getting its attention. The Magnemite released a ball of energy towards the water pokemon, but after a quick call from Bailey, "'Tect!" and she successfully summoned a barrier of energy to protect herself, Trema tossed another wallop of mud at the electric type.
"Yer doin' grand, Trema, I'll take it from 'ere." He said, pulling out a pokeball. With some well rehearsed aim, the young Professor tossed a pokeball at the now weakened magnet pokemon.
However, the pokeball was suddenly stopped in the air and propelled back towards Bailey, hitting him in the gut lightly. A confused look passed over Trema's face as she looked between the red head and the magnet pokemon. Was he hurt? Was this the silver pokemon's fault? Her answer came swiftly when Bailey said, "Ah... I see 'tis will be a lil' 'ore difficult than I expected. Trema, mud trap!" The Mudkip, who was listening diligently, nodded and water began to spill forth from her moth, wrapping around the floating ball of metal. Then, while the Magnemite was distracted, she threw in tail full of mud, the mud slapping at the steel type pokemon as it remained trapped in the whirlpool.
The electric pokemon was not one to go out with a fight. Finding an opening between the swirling water, it released a flash of energy towards the blue water pokemon. Acting quick, Trema summoned a shield of white energy that blocked the attack. With the pokemon now trapped, and more tired out than earlier, Bailey once again tried to capture it by tossing the pokeball at it.
