He chuckled a bit before nodding. "I suppose I'm a tad fortunate in that aspect" he admitted with a small smile. "As it is, the Safari Zone is a difficult beast. But your experience seems much more difficult then even that. You have my condolences" he apologized, before he decided to return Bastilo to his Pokeball. The newly evolved Wartortle, of course, would appreciate the rest that was being provided.
At her beginnings of doubt in herself, he let out a sigh. "Izumi, everyone starts somewhere. And despite my performance I am still weak in Trainer battles. I have much to learn, as do you. Doubting yourself does nothing but discourage your own Pokemon" he advised. "Think not of your own competence, but that of your Pokemon. If you have confidence in them, they will have confidence in you"

“Did you really have to offer me condolences?” she added with a smirk, before attempting to smack him upside the head for that earlier crack about the Safari Zone. “Half the times I went into the jungle I got what I was searching for… other times I ended up with crap, or worse, nothing… so yeah, you do have it lucky,” she ended with a momentary grin as she then continued to look out into the thinning mist; seeing the tops of grave stones rise from the depths. When she began to doubt her competence, he had just the words in order to make her think twice about what she’d let slip earlier, and her reply was this: “So… all I have to do… is trust everyone? I do that, it’s just that in the face of defeat, we tend to… lose heart. Like, toss the towel in, give up and go home. My Hydreigon had that going for him for a long while… and you know how terrible the temperament of a Hydreigon is,” she trailed off, this pensive look on her face at the moment.
“Maybe battles aren’t my thing at all… but isn’t that what a Trainer’s supposed to be good in? Battles? We got the wild Pokémon battles covered and down to a science… it’s just that other people tend to… bleh, this is why I’ve all but given up the hope of getting a single badge from any Gym at this point. It just… blows so hard,” she continued, gripping her arms—because they were still crossed at the moment. “What is it with them that makes them so… undefeatable? With other Trainers it comes easy to them; but with me it’s like a mountain I can’t even begin to scale…” she added, ‘them’ meaning all the other people who were just really good at battling, Gym Leaders included. “Why can’t they at least teach us scrubs all the way at the bottom of the food chain?” she growled, feeling something building up inside her… it wasn’t rage; it was… drive. A different kind of drive.

Josh let out an exasperated sigh. Oh boy. Emo Izumi has hit the scene. What do we do now?
"Zuzu, some people just have no lives" he said flatly. "All they care about is stats instead of the bond between people and Pokemon. We're a different type of Trainer. We tell a story with our Pokemon, we don't just bring out some roided powerhouses wirh no soul. When we send out our Pokemon they carry the memories of all the good and bad times they've had. They have a soul, they have life. We have a bond with our Pokemon that nobody can duplicate with them, full of battles and danger and memories. The way we've trained our Pokemon and gotten stronger as they do is what being a Trainer is all about"
"Those Pokemon you see in tournaments? Bred for battle. That's it. Some people care little for their Pokemon and just wanna win. Simple as that. They lose sight of what pokemon battling is all about, which of course is trainer and pokemon bonding through battle"
"Nobody likes losing" he comforted. "But we can adapt and overcome with time. I mean, I got Ferris around to help me learn... Kind of"
He shrugged. No need to dwell on it. "Wanna go another round?" He asked.

“Did you have an actual lesson with your ‘mentor’ yet? Because asides from a few casual meetings with my own mentor… I have yet to get an actual lesson with my own. Must be because he’s just so busy…” she trailed off, feeling that intense ‘drive’ welling up within her. “It… it actually breaks me to see ‘mons treated like they’re just machines. I try to interact with everyone as much as possible, but having close to a hundred makes the interaction quite difficult…” she continued again, with a sheepish chuckle escaping her lips, remembering the entire “drove” now running free in Unova at the moment.
At his proposition of another round, she then cracked another grin, before closing her hands around a particular little containment unit—this one had a surprise waiting for him should he let her go first. “So, you first this time?” she asked a few moments later, picking up her position back on the opposite side of the clearing. Izumi had enough time to ponder over what he’d said earlier; and then realized that maybe he was right—they had a different sense on what “being a Trainer” was; every kind of “Trainer” had their own ways of showing their “adherence to the profession”. Their way just happened to be with raising them all with a lot of love and TLC.

He shook his head. "No" he said flatly. "Not yet. We had a small battle to see what I could do and... That was it. Nothing from her since. Something tells me I might need to find other ways to practice and train..." he said quietly, sighing. He nodded in agreement to her statement. "I will never understand why some people see Pokemon as machines... Tools for battle, and breed them as so. And while I can't interact with all my Pokemon equally, I give them a good home when I'm not with them so they can live happy lives until I get to them, and I always interact with all the Pokemon I can when I do visit. It's the least I can do, yknow? I wish I could bring them all with me, but I can't. But I would never... NEVER breed one and use one just for battle. Their whole lives shouldn't be just based around battle... They're living things. Sentient beings like you and me with thoughts and feelings and emotions. They get happy, and sad, and angry, and upset, they shed tears of joy, tears of pain, tears of agony, tears of sadness... They feel pain, they love, they hate, they adore, they like, they dislike... They come in different shapes and sizes, and have different personalities and types of behaviors... And they live and they die... Just like us" he said softly, closing his eyes. "They deserve happy lives just as much as we do. And it's our responsibility as Trainers to give them that life. Battling is how we forge our bonds, but some people just see it as a means to an end, all they care about it winning... Winning... Winning. Not for the Pokemon, but for fame and glory. What's the point?" he asked.
He sighed, but smirked a bit when she accepted the offer for a second round. "Alright then" he said as he headed back to the cave to grab his Pokemon and shuffle them.He would come out with a Pokeball in hand, and smirk a bit. "Me first then? Fair enough. I've already decided" he said.
"Come on out!" he said as he threw the Pokeball. And out came a Pokemon that Izumi had never battled before...
"Pika!" Lightning would chirp as he came out of his Pokeball, ready for battle. He would look at Izumi, then eye Josh for a moment, who would smirk. "A battle is a battle" he said simply with a chuckle. "Pika!" Lightning chirped in understanding. This was good training... It couldn't hurt to do some sparring, right?

“Well, guess what. I have a bit of good news for you. My mentor actually sent me on a ‘mission’ of sorts… he said he’s willing to train another individual. He said that he’s getting bored of just having one pupil. If you want we could meet him, though he’s all the way in Kalos right now. Digging through the Badlands like we do…” she began with a chuckle o her face; before listening attentively to Josh’s discourse about what “being a Trainer” really meant to be. Well, each and every individual has their own interpretation and opinion; but sometimes they tend to take things a bit too seriously. I’ve seen their kind… people hanging around the Battle Frontier right here in this very region… doing nothing but battling, battling, battling… she thought to herself as she nodded in all the right places of his discussion on the matter.
“Everyone has their own thing… just that they tend to express it in the wrong manner…” she began with this attempt at a cheeky grin; which then became a smirk as he then selected his next participant in their little sparring session. Izumi was pretty surprised to see Lightning come out of an actual Pokeball; she had to blink a few times before rubbing her eyes for a few moments and then asking, “Whoa. Wait a second. I thought Lightning didn’t like it inside his containment thing?” she asked, a perplexed look all over her face. She’d gotten accustomed to seeing the Pikachu always perched on his shoulder—and she knew that he disliked being inside his Pokeball, which was most of the time. “Crap,” she said, more to herself than to him at large, before falling into silence and assessing the situation—she had a feeling that Lightning was… different, somehow. That totally trashes my plan of using Ishi in this sparring match… oh, wait, I know… she thought to herself, before switching tactics and reaching for another containment unit… and sending out its occupant.
As the flash of red light transformed into her chosen Pokémon, she then cracked her neck, as if preparing for the next steps to unfold. “Say hello to Hayato… my Turtwig,” she remarked with a grin as the Tiny Turtle ‘mon then started hopping around, before sniffing at the dirt. “Wait for him to move…” she continued, eyeing the Pikachu warily. It was like her suspicions of lightning being different—almost “upgraded” somehow were putting her off; hence the last-minute change in her sparring participant…

"Oh really?" he said, smirking a bit. "Well, since Ferris kind of disappeared off the face of the earth... I'd be happy to" he said with a smile. "It gives you an excuse to spend a little more time with me" he joked with a cheeky grin. "Just let me know when he's ready, feel free to give him word that I'm good to be taught. The more I know the merrier, and the quicker we're ready for the tower, the better" he said, cracking his neck.
At mention of the battle frontier and some trainers, he shook his head. "Tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk..... When will they learn that it's not just about constant battle? And glory? It's about the Pokemon, not them. But not everyone shares that philosophy" he said with a sigh. "Not much we can do about it, to be quite honest"
As Josh sent Lightning out, he smirked at Izumi's reaction. "Eh, sometimes he doesn't care. Sometimes he hates it. To be honest, this time we just did it in order to fuck with you. Lightning was all ears for that" he said with a laugh, and if Izumi looked just right she might see a mischievous glimmer in Lightning's eyes, and maybe even a grin. It seems the Pikachu certainly was in on it.
Out next was Izumi's Turtwig. She wanted to give them the first move though... He wondered what she had in mind. For now, they stood their ground, just watching carefully, silently... Waiting patiently... In complete sync, both Josh and Lightning waited to see what Izumi would do.

Izumi could be heard in a hissing manner—but it was the “Pfffffft” snarky kind of hissing because from what she noticed, both master and his Pokémon were in cahoots with one another. Now that they both had their ‘mons out on the field, she then noticed that he was taking the “waiting stance” as well—was this going to turn into some kind of a waiting game, or something? She’d already stated that he could take the first move! What is he thinking, so it comes down to a waiting game, eh… alright… allow me then… she thought as she began to whistle; before snapping to attention and then facing forward, “Hayato, Razor Leaf that Pikachu now!” while pointing forward. She knew that Lightning would go on the defensive; and would prove hard to hit (she’d already seen the Lightning Mouse in action) so it would be better to get a head start on the battle!
Right on cue, the Turtwig then took on this look of intense concentration; before sending out a flurry of leaves—they were much different from the ones used in the Magical Leaf attack—and then with another graceful gesture, propelled the gust of leaves forward! She was intent on keeping Hayato as steady as possible—because the moment she made the tiny turtle—the Grass equivalent at least—charge forward, then she’d be done for and be completely toasted. “While you’re at it, send out a Mega Drain attack, if in case the first attack misses!” she continued, and watched as the Turtwig then attempted to conjure up a beam of life-sucking energy, sending it hurtling forward right behind the storm of leaves that were now screeching in the Pikachu’s direction! “Hold your ground, Haya! Let the Pika come closer to us!” she added, and the Turtwig then solidified its position, right where she stood; watching and waiting for the next moves…

And so it had begun. As he had hoped, Izumi would make the first move. It was a good way to scope out her Turtwig before charging headfirst into battle. As Josh expected, she used a ranged attack to start them off to be cautious, and knowing Izumi, another attack would follow. Josh had studied Izumi's attack patterns from the few times they'd been together with Pokemon, he had a feeling he knew something would follow.
Immediately, the Turtwig would use Razor Leaf. As the leaves roared toward Lightning, Josh waited until the last second. He was right, Izumi would call a second attack to try and follow up while Lightning was dodging. "Lightning, roll out of the way of the leaves!" Josh called. "Pika!" Lightning responded as he would roll out of the way. Some of the leaves would graze the Pikachu's side though. Bit of an off on the timing... But no matter. His strategy worked, because the Mega Drain was going right for them, and giving them ample time to dodge.
"Lightning, leap over it!" Josh called. "Pika!" Lightning chirped as he would leap over the beam. Quickly, Josh would change gears. "Thunder Wave!" Josh quickly commanded. "Pikachu!" Lightning let out in response as waves of electricity would shoot for the Turtwig. "Glide through the waves, Lightning, and change course if they miss! Brick Break!" he'd suddenly call. Lightning would respond by changing his direction in mid-air to dive bomb, gliding along with one of the waves of electricity. Whether they hit or miss didn't matter, Lightning would change direction as he got close enough, his paws glowing as the electric mouse tried to hit the Turtwig with a massive chop.

Now that the “mock battle” had begun, she watched as the hail of leaves conjured up by the Razor Leaf attack whistled through the air; but the Pikachu had cut across and then just dodged them! Dodged! Why did he dodge?! Figures… I got to pin this thing down… she thought to herself as she then watched the yellow blur just… dive out of the way; before releasing quick jolts of electricity! “Haya, move! Get out of the way!” she shouted; watching as the leaves then whipped up and out of sight; offering a clearer view of the field; and then Turtwig then strafed off to one side, barely missing the little “surprise package” that the Pikachu had sent her way. It wasn’t over yet though—because Lightning was veering in close, seemingly gliding along as the Mega Drain attack went completely over the Pikachu’s head. Seeing that it was charging up another technique, she then decided to toss caution to the air, shouting, “Haya! Up high! Seed Bomb!”
“Tuuuuuuurtwig!” came the cry of reply, and the Turtwig then jumped out of the way; a split second before the Pikachu could come slamming into it; and now that the Tiny Turtle was airborne, she then looked down and then began releasing a barrage of hard-shelled seeds; raining down like missiles being unloaded on a scheduled payload drop over enemy territory. Whether they hit or miss remained to be seen, but she continued on with the next command, “Haya! Turn up the heat! Sunny Day, now!” and the little sprout on its head quivered for a moment—before the foggy gloom was suddenly cut forth and dispensed as a sudden blast of sunshine tore through the haze. The Turtwig then landed off to one side, the sun now shining quite high in the sky, awaiting whatever would come next—because with Sunny Day, something was sure to come up from Izumi’s side of the field…

Izumi had managed to avoid his attacks, but the chess game wasn't over just yet. It was obvious though, that the second Sunny Day was used... Something was up her sleeve, and Josh knew exactly what. There would be no charge period... And Turtwig was a grass type. If Josh was using a fire type, he could turn this to his advantage and take her Turtwig out, but with Lightning, he would need to improvise.
"Lightning, use Magnet Rise!" Josh suddenly called. "Pika!" Lightning responded as soon as he landed, a gold aura covering the Pikachu as he would float through the air. "Pika!" he chirped as he flew through the air like a bird, just in time to counter the bombs...
"Dodge, quickly!" Josh called. "Pi!" Lightning let out as he would spin in the air, barely dodging the bombs by a hair. "Alright, now use Quick Attack!" he called. "Pika!" Lightning responded as he would be cloaked in light for a moment before his speed temporarily increased.
"Piiii... KA!" he let out as he started barreling toward the Turtwig, knowing that he would need to dodge at any moment... They had dealt with Sunny Day before.
