"Aye, egg groups seem to be what happened here" he agreed. "It's just strange why the Torchic is so oddly colored, and the fact that a Torchic egg came from a female Typhlosion" he mused, scratching his beard. "It's a marvel how that even works. I could see a Torchic with a Typhlosion as the father, but not as the mother. How does that even work?" He asked.
"Grrraaaaagh?" Inferno roared curiously toward the Torchic staring up at him as he got up, staring it down not really comprehending what was going on here. Eventually though the Typhlosion would just accept it and hesitantly nuzzle his half sister.

“I don’t know how they work. But at least they do know who’s compatible with who at least…” she trailed off, looking at Inferno considering Zira with this unreadable look on its face… and then the storm cloud-colored Torchic then approached him very slowly, before suddenly tackling him with a full-charge attempt at a hug! Well, it was a try at hugging, but since the Torchic line had no arms to speak of, it looked like Zira had just bowled over a much bigger, hulking Typhlosion down. “Easy there, Zi. Hold it in. Don’t be too excited,” she said a few moments later, before looking around—was it just her or was the fog thinning out? She then remembered the other reason why she had come up here today—and then looked at josh with this steely glint in her eye. “Well, I am here for one reason… one of many,” she began with a grin, standing up and stamping on the ground, the better to get her numb muscles moving.
“Let’s have a sparring match. I brought an entirely different set of ‘mons with me; I only have Momo with me as an anchor. Everyone else here need a little toughening up in terms of battling… strategizing… and stuff,” she began, wringing her hands as she then started to fuss with her hair, before finally letting it loose and letting it fall, framing her face. “I want to see if I’m just really bad at battling, or I’m just not cut out to be a Trainer after all,” she continued, her thoughts running a mile a minute at the present time. “I… well, let me be honest with you. Do you know about this thing… called ‘Battle Coaches’? I signed up to be apprenticed under one of them, but as of now, we have yet to have any official sessions, because my mentor is busy with other things right now…” she trailed off with an embarrassed grin on her face. “So… I figured, before I do officially meet with my mentor, I could get some practice in…” she trailed off, unsure if he would accept or not!

"Egg Groups are odd indeed" he said, giving a sigh. How it was possible with this, he didn't know, but that wasn't the point right now. He watched as the Torchic tired to hug her Typhlosion sibling but only really could tackle the poor thing, which didn't really move much due to the Torchic's small size and Inferno being as big as he was. Josh chuckled a bit. "Poor Torchic" he said. "I'm sure eventually she'll get bigger and can hug him then" he said with a laugh.
He listened to her offer, as well as her statements and questions. He nodded in response. "Aye, I'm under one too" he said. "Her name is Ferris, I believe. Gwyneth Ferris. Odd name, but she's done some process, though our lessons have been few and far between" he admitted sheepishly, giving a sigh. "I guess it's better to learn from experience" he added, scratching his head.
"But... As for the sparring match... Let's do it" he said with a small smile as he got to his feet fully. "I know just the Pokemon to use he said as he led her outside and to an open area in the mountains where they could battle uninhibited. "Alright, you ready?" he said as he took out a Pokeball. "Ladies first" he cracked, letting her pick her Pokemon first. Josh had already picked his...

“I can’t wait to see her evolve… and how shocking her plumage is going to be when she does grow into a strong and proud Blaziken,” she added with a chuckle, having noticed her Torchic’s attempts to tackle her big brother down—but utterly ending up making a fool of herself instead. At the mention of his mentor’s name, her eyebrows shot up so high, they threatened to disappear into her hairline. Oohh, that name sounds familiar… wait a second, it is familiar! It’s in one of the files I gave my own mentor! She thought to herself, hastily rearranging her features into one that resembled a puzzled look. “Heh, join the club, we’re both out in the wild until then, looks like our mentors want us to learn from the world first,” she added with a grin; before watching him finally get up and point her over to a spot not too far from the campsite where they could have said sparring match without any problems.
“Zi, stay with Inferno, okay? We won’t be too long,” she said, looking down at the Chick ‘mon that had tried to follow her, before she gently shooed her back to the campsite. Momo, who was standing guard at the edge of the site, saw that they were headed somewhere—and decided to follow them not too far behind. Once they’d arrived at the clearing, she then cracked a grin, because he was letting her go first. “Alright, let’s have at it. So, how do we spar? Got any rules or something?” she asked, quickly clenching a hand on one particular-looking ball—the one where Vincent, her Riolu, was currently half-awake. Seeing that he was about to be called out, he then sat up with a start, before pawing at the inside edge of the containment unit. “A’ight, here goes…” she trailed off, plucking the ball she’d been considering and then sending out Vincent in a flash of red light… and the playful Emanation ‘mon made his appearance.
“Meet Vince, my Riolu,” she said with a grin, popping back his containment unit into its more compact size and then dropping it down her jacket. She then waited to see who he'd send out, and hopefully it wasn't going to be too hard for her to counter if in case things got hairy...!

Josh smirked faintly as he led her out to the open area, Josh shrugged as she asked about rules. "Not sure" he admitted. "I... Guess we'll go one on one for now until we feel it's a good time for them to stop" he said. "Enough to train them, but keeping from killing them" he added with a smirk.
She sent out her Riolu as her first Pokemon. Josh nodded and smirked. "Alrighty~" he chirped with a smile. "Alright then... Bastilo! Come out!" Josh called.
Out of the cave would come a Squirtle, who would take his place by Josh's side, eager for battle. "Squirtle, squirt!" Bastilo let out eagerly. "Show her what you're made of Bastilo! Aqua Tail!" He commanded.
"Squirtle!" Bastilo let out as he charged toward Riolu, leaping into the air, Josh watched as the tail glowed a bright cyan as he tried to bring it down on Riolu...

“That sounds fine by me,” she said with another grin on her face, before watching and then seeing him send out… a Squirtle. Seeing it triggered her… envy, because Squirtle was one of the powerhouses she was looking for; albeit with little success. She then decided to book a trip to the Safari Zone as soon as she was able—and then the battle had already started without warning! Seeing that the Squirtle was coming in close with an attack, she then began her own planning, shifting into defensive mode. “Vince… get light on your feet with Agility; then counter Bastilo over there with Bullet Punch, if you please?” she said towards the loopy Emanation ‘mon’s way; and the Riolu looked up at her, quite confused—before the whistling sound of the attack came careening close! “Rioooooo,” he began, quickly entering the calm, meditative state… before feeling light on his feet.
Now that he knew he could move faster, he then zipped out of the way at the very last second, before turning around and then solidifying his fists; and then suddenly launching a peppering of quick punches that came quick, fast, and fierce! I know that Bullet Punch gains priority in moving, but we’ll see about that… she thought as the Riolu continued the pummeling assault. The question now was, did it hit, or would she have to resort to dodging again? Also, I need to pick out his freaking move pool… why did the Riolu line have to be blessed with almost-equal stats in everything?! She pondered to herself as she awaited his next move. “Your turn, Sass Master,” she said with a grin, sitting down on a nearby rock so that she could watch the proceedings—and still continue to issue whatever orders she needed to give!

Agility... Figures, he thought. He knew the Riolu would be faster now... Luckily, he had specially trained Bastilo in the past to be perfect for this type of situation. His training back in Kalos had allowed him to be able to act quickly in fast paced battles, and gave Josh a chance to work with him in this type of environment and gain the ability to think on his feet despite it. They were going to be tough to beat here... And Josh knew Izumi would be too.
As the punches starting flying, Josh would quickly call out with "Dodge, Bastilo!" and the Squirtle's surprising speed would come into play, managing to dodge and weave through the punches, used to this sort of environment. But Josh knew Bastilo couldn't keep it up forever, he knew he had to act! "Hurry Bastilo, use Rapid Spin! Then use Aqua Tail while you're still spinning!" he called. "Squirtle!" Bastilo responded before retreating into his shell, as it started spinning and attempted to slam itself into the Riolu. Whether it hit or not wouldn't matter as the Squirtle's tail would pop out and glow a bright cyan as he attempted to slam it into the Riolu while spinning.

The Riolu was quite surprised to see that something had actually managed to dodge the peppering punches he’d thrown, and was suddenly caught off-guard by the Rapid Spin that had smacked him upside the head at such close range! “R-riooooo,” she heard the emanation ‘mon cry out of surprise; but had managed to recover from the spinning—but then there was another problem; had Josh somehow managed to turn his Squirtle into some sort of spinning shuriken of doom, the way it had chained from Rapid Spin into… what seemed to be Aqua Tail? “Try to get out of the way and counter with Force Palm when you can!” she began, leaning forward ever-so-slightly and watching as the spinning blue turtle shuriken came charging forward; and the Aqua Tail had smacked the Riolu once more, and she heard him cry out of shock! “Move, Vince! Force Palm it once it gets closer!” she continued, trying hard not to lose her cool at what was going on.
The Riolu then skidded backwards a few paces and saw the spinning turtle shuriken charging… and then waited for the perfect chance to strike. As the spinning turtle of doom inched closer, the Riolu stood there, waiting—and once it had veered in close enough, quickly spun around and then began pummeling the turtle shuriken-Squirtle with its Force Palm attack, hitting it with a one-two combination of strikes and then skidding off to one side, awaiting further orders from his mistress. The attacks really hurt, and the Riolu was doing his best in not showing weakness; but he was starting to look banged-up—and yet he wanted to go on fighting, to prove that he could handle himself on the battlefield. I know you can do it, Vince! Hang in there! I know you can hold out! We’ll find a way to get out of this sticky situation! She thought, waiting for the Squirtle to make its next move.

The strategy had worked so far. Josh's methods of thinking outside the box had allowed Bastilo to strike like a giant shuriken, and it had proved efficient so far. The question was now, how did he follow up? Well, Josh wouldn't have time to think as Izumi's decision to do the one-two punch with Force Palm would work, though maybe not as well as Izumi would expect. Josh had been lucky here, Bastilo hadn't come out of his shell, only stuck his tail out of the shell as he spun with Rapid Spin in order to protect himself while hitting the Riolu with Aqua Tail and Rapid Spin at the same time. Despite the protection though, Bastilo would still take damage, and would fly through the air due to the force of the attack. Josh had an idea though...
"Out of the shell! Water Pulse!" Josh would suddenly call. "Squirtle!" Bastilo let out as he would come out of his shell, before beginning to charge up an orb of water. It was very similar to the aura spheres that Lucario were capable of using, actually, a detail that Josh recognized as he smirked. If anything, it'd both bewilder and throw Izumi off her game, as well as motivate her to evolve her Riolu with expert training as soon as possible. It helped him, and it helped her... Perfect.
The aura sphere-Imean Water Pulse would charge as the Squirtle had stopped in mid-air, before it got big enough for the Squirtle to throw at the Riolu. Whether it hit or not though, Josh would call a command.
"SKULL BASH!" Josh would call. "RIGHT FOR HIM!"
Josh was pumped up, he was in the zone, and the Squirtle could feel it. In return, so was he...
"SQUIRRRRR-TLE!" he let out as he would suddenly rocket toward the Riolu, not too far behind the water pulse, hoping to strike either after the dodge, or take advantage of the Water Pulse hitting and stunning it. Josh knew Bastilo's defense would raise as well...

She couldn’t help but cringe internally as Vincent got smacked around by the giant turtle-shuriken, but seeing as he was preparing to fire off some big and heavy moves, she decided to get him out of the way as fast as possible. “Vince, move out of the way with your Agility! That Water Pulse is going to hit you!” she shouted, and the Riolu nodded, before watching the orb of water being charged up—and then fired the attack; but the orb exploded on empty space—where had the Riolu gone? He had managed to zip ahead, crouched low on the ground while cranking up the burst of speed; feeling the sudden explosion of water rain down all over him. Little did he know that he’d catapulted right into a trap; as the Skull Bash that came from shuriken-Squirtle was headed his way! Since he was at extremely close quarters the moment the attack connected, the force of the Skull Bash sent the Riolu flying, crying out of surprise!
“Vince! Land on your feet!” she shouted, watching as the little Emanation ‘mon soar through the air, knocked back by the force of the little Skull Bash—and the Riolu heard her cry of distress, quickly flipping over and attempting to land on his feet; however it was a three-point landing; as he landed with both feet, plus a hand to steady his stance. “Go in close! Bullet Punch the Squirtle as best as you can manage!” she continued, encouraging him on as the Riolu then stood as tall as he could (injuries and battering notwithstanding, he’d taken some serious damage by now) and then closed the distance—thanks to its boosted Speed via Agility—and then another peppering of punches, hard as steel, came flying as fast as the Riolu could dish them out! Why hadn’t he managed to take out the Squirtle as easily as he could take out other Pokemon? Was there something wrong with his fighting style?
Or... was he simply too inexperienced?

Direct hit. Josh knew her Riolu, especially with Agility, was too fast and too smart to take that water pulse so easily, but baiting and switching it was the perfect plan, Josh's outside the box thinking had shined once again. Another successful plan in the books. Regardless, the Riolu had managed to land on his feet and Izumi would command an attack instantly. Josh hoped to keep from giving her a chance.
As soon as Bastilo landed, Josh would immediately call out a command. "Bastilo, use Rapid Spin!" He commanded. "Squirtle!" He responded as he retreated into his shell, starting to spin in his shell and instead of trying to dodge the attack from Vincent, would go in headfirst and slam right into him.
As soon as the slam made contact though, Bastilo would be enveloped in that white light that Josh knew so well. Stunned, he called out to Izumi. "Back him off! Stop the battle!"
The Squirtle would drop to the ground, still in his shell. Finally, the light would fade and when Bastilo finally left his shell, it was as a Wartortle. Josh couldn't help but grin wide. "Alright, Bastilo! You evolved!" He cheered joyfully.

Was she just… getting too ahead of herself when it came to battles like this one? Izumi didn’t realize that she’d been baited by josh at that moment; and she saw that the giant turtle shuriken was headed right towards the Riolu! Just as the first few strikes of the Bullet Punch attack had connected, a sudden lights show started emanating from the Squirtle, and she then whistled a sharp note once—and the Riolu looked up, out of confusion. “Vince, stand down a few moments…” she trailed off, quickly shielding her eyes as the light that poured out from the Squirtle turned flash-bang bright. The confused Emanation ‘mon then turned away as well; shielding his eyes from the bright light; and once it was all over… the shell looked the same; but instead of a happy-go-lucky, round-headed turtle, something… else stuck out its head; and then she realized what it was.
“Holy… whoa. Nice one, Josh,” she said with a grin, giving him a congratulatory salute in his direction. The Riolu then blinked, and then practically stared at the Squirtle-now-Wartortle, and then flopped down onto the ground, the better to get a look at its new ‘sparring partner’. A lot of things had changed—for one thing, the light bluish-green of his skin was now a more solid blue… and then instead of just a normal tail, its tail was now tufty and had three splits, plus it had turned white! The color of the shell had changed too, to a darker shade of red… so this was what evolution was all about? The Riolu continued to stare at the Wartortle in wonder… “Now you’re making me even more jelly,” he heard his caretaker comment, which caused him to look up. “I don’t have a Squirtle yet… maybe when I go raid the Safari Zone…” she trailed off, thinking about the possibilities.

Josh smiled a bit as he walked over, patting his Wartortle on the head as Bastilo got up. "Just you wait, Bastilo" he said with a small smirk. "Soon enough, you're going to be a big old Blastoise, and then you'll be a steamroller to be feared" he promised.
"Aye, I got lucky when I was looking for a Squirtle" he admitted to Izumi mentioning her failed attempts. "But catching him wasn't easy. I have scars" he revealed.
"I gotta admit I'm kinda jealous you got a Riolu too" he said with a laugh. "Always wanted one but it eludes me" he admitted. "I think we can end this spar for now. They both look exhausted"

“You want to know one thing about the Safari Zone?” she began with this strangely cross look on her face as she crossed her own arms out of frustration. “That place… it wasn’t evolved into easy sectors like it is now. I used to go straight out into a big, wild, untamed jungle… and just cross my fingers in order to hope that what I’m looking for appears on the trip I made. You have it lucky now,” she added with a chuckle; remembering those earlier dark times she’d gone to the Safari Zone and almost getting lost in its depths. She then looked at the Wartortle once again; and then decided to book another trip to the “renovated” Safari Zone once she had enough free time in the near future. “Right, let’s end the sparring for now… it seems I still have much to catch up on when it comes to fighting against other Trainers,” she added with a sheepish grin, reaching for a particular Moon Ball and then recalling Vincent, who welcomed the beam of red light—it meant that he got to rest once he was back inside the Moon Ball that he called his home.
Now that their first sparring match was over, she then got to thinking… before looking out into the clearing fog, before asking Josh, “Do… do you think I still have what it takes to be a Trainer?” with her arms that were still crossed atop her chest. “I… I can raise them all just fine… but with those defeats I suffered from the Gym Leaders I tried to challenge, and that nasty Tower over in Shalour all the way in Kalos… do you think I still have the disposition to actually keep on being a Trainer? I can raise everyone fine, sure, and hold my own in terms of battles against wild Pokémon… but in terms of battle against other people I just suck so bad. Is there something wrong that I need to fix?” she trailed off, still squinting into the fog, trying to make out the shapes here and there.
