at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
It would be a lie to say that Novel wasn't nervous. A battle was a battle usually and he was more than proud to flaunt his power. He would go out, and show everyone... what? This wasn't like a Gym Challenge. Normally just one or two people were watching those, not counting the trainer battling. He trained in the fields sometimes, and even if he drew a crowd it wasn't that many people. Not as many eyes that would be following him today. For a brief moment, he wondered why he had even signed up. He certainly wasn't the most skilled of the leaders, and he hadn't been one as long as some. Maybe he didn't belong here.
Sighing, Novel shook his head and scolded himself. No, he had every right to be here and he would do good. Even if he lost this match, he would do so with dignity and grace. It was on him not to make himself look good, but to make his Pokemon look good. Salt to everything else. Smoothing down his hair for the fifth time and checking his pokeballs were on his belt, he exited his room and started the walk down the long hallway to the arena. Even if his stomach was in knots, he held his head high and tried to project an air of confidence.
The roar of the crowd was deafening. Hiding a wince, Novel stepped out into the battleground. The crowd surged, the anticipation of the coming match working them into a frenzy. Novel raised his hand and smiled wide at the people, for the cameras. Hand on hip, he stopped in his designated space and waited on his opponent. He hadn't met the Grass Gym Leader personally, but he had heard stories. He looked forward to the match, even if the people made him nervous. He expected his pokemon would enjoy the tussle as well.
Speaking of, Novel pulled a pokeball off his belt and sent out his first choice. Sal stretched and shook herself some, yawning wide and looking around. Ah, so many people... what was this again? Oh yeah, a battle or something. Novel had warned her about all of this stuff earlier, had warned all of them. It would be cool to meet another Gym Leader's Pokemon, even if they were fighting. It might even be a better judge of character for all she knew. Either way, for now she was just toddling around and trying to put on her best behavior. The other wasn't out here just yet. It was just like her Novel to come out early or some nonsense like that.

LOVE, IN THE END
// IS JUST A LIE TO ONE PERSON
// NOW LOOK AT ME FORGETTING YOU
// WITH YOUR EYES WIDE OPEN
Initially, the Grass Gym Leader had been hesitant. After all, playing gladiator with fellow associates did not immediately pique his interest. By nature, Linden preferred quiet isolation, and he didn't have many demands so long as he could cary out his responsibilities undisturbed. Sighing, he ran a hand through his flaxen coloured hair, gifting the mirror a dubious look. His reflection, tall and slim, gazed back at him. He'd put more care into his appearance than he liked to admit, wanting to look presentable if not imposing. Taking a last drink of water, Linden allowed himself a thin smile, his tapered fingers receiving one of Citrine's affectionate nips. She'd been with him long enough to recognized a nervous breakdown when she saw one.
"Honestly..." he murmured softly, giving the Meganium a decidedly exasperated look. "Haven't you grown too old for that, Citrine?" At this, she shot him a look of mock offence, darting out the dressing room door and denying Linden the defiant entrance he'd hoped to make. He didn't swear, although he considered the shape of the word in his mouth before stalking after her.
Compared to the relative silence backstage, the noise out here was damn near deafening. Suppressing the sudden urge to wince, Linden made his way to the designated starting point, offering both audience and camera a dazzling smile. Citrine, on the other hand, had taken particular interest in his opponent, a somber-looking young man with tousled black hair. At present, she was busy examining the Gym Leader's shoes, head cocked to one side in curiosity. Great, he bet that looked impressive.
Sighing, Linden brought one hand to his lips and whistled softly. At the sound of her trainer's call, Citrine went scampering back across the arena, nearly knocking him over in her renewed interest. The collective "awww" did nothing to improve Linden's mood, he would have liked to be impressive. He supposed it didn't matter as Citrine would certainly not have been his starting choice, but still.
Embarrassing Pokémon antics aside, Linden let his cerulean gaze fall on the opposing Gym Leader. His features were finely tooled and he had the effortlessly attractive look of someone who'd recently tumbled out of bed. Knowing it was a Psychic Leader he was up against reassured Linden that he wouldn't be slaughtered straight away, which was certainly a pleasant thought. He then realized they'd been staring intently at one another for the past minute, and hurriedly averted his gaze. As nice as it would be to win, he'd rather not do so by creeping his opponent out, thank you very much.
"My apologies for having kept you waiting," he began evenly, already planning his first move. "My name is Linden, and although you most likely already know it, I'm one of Shui City's Gym Leaders. Grass is my specialty." Pausing, he added, "I am told yours is Psychic, correct?"

at most I'm sleeping all these demons away
When his opponent came out, Novel couldn't help but give him a good looking over. He couldn't help himself. The other man was attractive, and he was a sucker for a pretty face. That wouldn't get in the way of his fight, though. Upon seeing the Meganium, it made him worry about Sal. Sal was his best Pokemon, but she was a Slowbro. They were part water, which made him a little anxious about her well being in the coming match. Oh well. He trusted her to know her limits, and he wouldn't let her get seriously hurt. It made him try and think out what would be a good move to prevent her from being taken out right away. Realizing he had been lost in thought, he cleared his throat and brought his attention back to Linden. Hope he wasn't pegged as a creeper by staring into space in the blond's direction...
"Its just fine. Yes, I am the Psychic Gym Leader. Novel Lettlin, Gym Leader of Bosky Hamlet." A small smile curved over Novel's lips. "We're practically neighbors, seeing as how close our towns are to each other." He could also imagine that the Grass Gym Leader would be at home where his Gym was at. At least from the outside. There had been a few confused Trainers who had wandered in thinking he was the Grass Leader for a short time when he first opened. That's what he got for staying in a bunch of farming fields. As it stood, that really wasn't important at the moment; he could trade gardening tips and other silly nonsense later.
"I hope you don't mind if we get started? I'm really very eager. Sorry." Chuckling, Novel closed his eyes and tried to center himself. When he opened them back up, a very, very faint glow outlined his eyes. Sal's eyes had turned blue as well, for a split moment. It was actually... just a parlor trick. Sal using her Psychic attack just to make a small sheen, a trick of the light over Novel's eyes. He had trained for weeks to perfect that with her non-verbally. At least, not directly. It was more for intimidation than anything, and as soon as the battle started would fade away. Novel often found that psyching out your opponent before a battle usually already won it. He doubted that Linden was as easy to scare as a normal Trainer, but every bit would help him.
"Sal, show them some Team spirit and Signal for the troops. We're taking this one home." Standing at attention, Sal's dopey face took on a slightly more serious look as she moved to ready herself for a fight. The odd word choices were attacks, specific only to her. Novel found that in his own Gym, since everyone blindfolded, it was harder for foes to predict his movements if he wasn't saying simple 'lefts' and 'right' and 'use Psychic' all the time. Each of his Pokemon had their own code that varied with complexity. As it was, Sal's was the most complex that he had. At least he was just spouting out silly attack phrases and not actually guiding her movements this time. That would have been a lot more embarrassing on national television.
"Broooooo." Sal shifted from one foot to the other, eyeing Linden, then the Meganium. Lurching to the side, Sal darted to the right with impressive speed for a pokemon with 'Slow' in its name. Eyes glowing blue once again, there was a flicker as she seemed to just split into three. A Double Team attack, making one original and two copies. They all moved in a strange unison, the psychic copies almost indistinguishable from the real deal. Darting back to the right, the very tip of the shell that engulfed Sal's tail began to glow green. Turning on her heel's suddenly, copies doing the same, Sal poised her back to the Meganium. A beam shot out at it, a Signal Beam attack.

LOVE, IN THE END
// IS JUST A LIE TO ONE PERSON
// NOW LOOK AT ME FORGETTING YOU

There was no denying it: Novel's opening illusion was certainly an impressive one, and although he'd anticipated something out of the ordinary, Linden couldn't help the low chuckle that escaped him.
"Return, Citrine!" he called sharply, shrugging off his white blazer. "Mirkwood, counter with Phantom Force!"
Twin jets of oscillating of blue light shot past him as Citrine and Mirkwood exchanged places, the Phantump exploding into action with a malevolent shriek. Casting his trainer a cheshire-like grin, the ghostly Stump Pokémon shuddered, vanishing into an ominous purple mist.
"No need to apologize," Linden commented pleasantly, the purplish fog of Mirkwood's Phantom Force enveloping him like a shroud. "You'll have plenty of time to do so once this is over." The sentiment was uncharacteristically teasing, and it felt somewhat strange coming from his mouth. Swallowing, the Grass Gym Leader allowed himself the luxury of a small smile. Type-wise, he had the advantage, what with his team consisting almost entirely of pure grass Pokémon.
Even so, there was something about Novel which gave Linden reason to believe it wouldn't be an easy fight. The Psychic Gym Leader seemed the kind of person who wasn't accustomed to loosing. Well, neither was he, but then there could only be one winner this time.

Novel couldn't help the sly grin as he watched the Phanthump move. A tactical switch and a tactical move. Nice choice. It would probably be in his won interest to swap out himself, but he trusted Sal could get things done. He wanted to allow her some small victory, or at least knowing she had carved a place for herself, before he swapped her out. It could be very crushing to the ego to get swapped out just because she was at a heavy disadvantage.
Speaking of, Sal was stunned momentarily by her foe poofing in thin air. She looked around, mouth open, trying to locate her opponent. The two clones followed her movements, perfect copies. "Sal, don't look so Winded. You've got this, old girl. Don't stop." Raising her head up with a new determination, Sal opened her mouth wide. A blue shone from the back of her throat for a moment, then quickly shot out in a spectacular blast of Icy Wind. She spun in place, surrounding herself with the frost and cold. She could still be struck, probably would be since she hadn't tried to move, but since she had covered almost all angles it would most likely leave a nasty sting on the enemy.
Watching her closely, Novel took a single pokeball from his pocket and tossed it lightly from hand to hand. Well, Sal had done her part for now... he would let her see if her attack bore any fruit before he swapped her out. He hoped she wouldn't take too much of a heavy hit, but he wasn't so sure. He wanted to win, but he didn't want to be the first one to lose a pokemon. Seems like it would just halt his own cause.
"Your Pokemon is very well trained." Novel purred out. "Its understandable for such a handsome opponent." A little baseless flirting never hurt anyone. Plus, if he could get Linden flustered, then it was easier for him. It also didn't hurt to put on a little show for the crowd, who seemed to appreciate it from the catcalling and wolf whistles that echoed from them afterwards. Even if he lost, at least Novel was confident he could leave an impression.

Oh?
Well, he hadn't been expecting that. Regardless, Linden swept the look of slight surprise off his face in a heartbeat, knowing the damage would be minor considering his own Pokémon was only half-substantial. Still, Novel's quick-thinking deserved some recognition and he graced the opposing Gym Leader with a mock bow.
"You flatter me, Novel," he replied smoothly, running a hand through his hair. Smiling thinly, the young man watched his Phantump tear through Novel's Icy Wind, purple smog billowing out in heavy tendrils. Although Mirkwood's amorphous form shuddered upon making contact with the ice, it redoubled its efforts with renewed malevolence. Linden didn't wait for the opposing Slowbro to recover, instead he reached for his second Pokémon, tapered fingers curling over the device's release mechanism.
"I believe that's enough for now, my friend," he called, holding up the red and white capsule, "return!" Spinning on his heel, he added, "Let's go Dionysus, Leaf Storm!"
Shielding his eyes from the sudden beam of pale blue light, Linden allowed himself a teasing wink, laughing at Novel's flirtation. Under normal circumstances, the young man would have shrivelled from embarrassment. Now though, under the flashing lights and pounding roar of the crowd, he found he didn't care in the slightest

Sal shuttered and shivered, letting out a small cry of pain, and the tendrils touched and attacked her. It hurt, a lot, but she wasn't down for the count yet. She shuddered and stayed on her feet. She didn't expect another attack to come so soon, but still had enough of her mental facilities to block it right as Novel called out a warning to her. Eyes glowing blue with a Psychic, the leaves that were aimed to carve her a new one stopped just inches from her face. She slammed them onto the ground, a look of defiance on her face. She wasn't going to be taken out so easy, not what the fight had just started. Even though Sal had avoided damage, her copies weren't so lucky. The Leaf Storm ripped through them, making them fade out of existence.
Novel looked at Sal curiously, eyebrow raised. It was rare for the Slowbro to get so fired up. She would also probably get angry at him for swapping her out the way she was right now. So, he would relent and let her stay out a little longer. He still held onto the Pokeball in his hand for when that time would come, however. "Sal!" He called out coolly. "That was a very smart move! Why don't you show them how Icy you can be? It doesn't hurt to show Off sometimes." Keeping her distance but her eyes locked on the Tropius, Sal nodded lightly before opening her mouth once again. She took a deep breath as the blue glow started again, then blew hard and let the Icy Wind loose towards her opponent. When her attack was done, Sal carefully jumped back. She let out a soft sigh, then just... sat down. A faint white glow enveloped her body for a moment, then she shook it off and slowly stood back up. A Slack Off attack, which made her sluggish but helped her find her second wind for the fight.
"I don't speak flattery, my good man. Flattery is insincere. I mean what I say and say what I mean." Novel let out a soft chuckle at the reaction. Linden really was an interesting fellow for brushing off his comments so smoothly. It sort of made him regret not taking the time to seek the other man out before this. It would have been interesting to see him react to this sort of thing in person
Sal's copies were destroyed! Sal was hit by Phantom Force! (47% Taken) Sal countered the Leaf Storm with Psychic! Sal used Icy Wind (53 - 62.5%)! Sal used Slack Off! (50% HP recovered)
Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Linden strode forward, rewarding Dionysus's efforts with an affectionate pat. Really, did Novel take him for an idiot? Not only were the man's commands dreadfully predictable, his Slowbro was surprisingly adept at evading Linden's most accurate attacks.
"I'm afraid you're rather obvious, my friend," he murmured, eyeing Novel's Slowbro with a decidedly irritated expression on his pale face. "But no matter, I plan on destroying that Slowbro of yours one way or another." Closing his eyes, Linden took a moment to gather himself, carefully replaying his next move.
"Dionysus," he instructed, opening his eyes "Finish them with a consecutive Leaf Storm and Leaf Tornado blitz attack. Hold nothing back!" Smirking, Linden watched as his Pokémon took flight, a powerful whirlwind building up around Tropius's monstrous frame. Countless hours of hard work had resulted in what Linden knew to be one of his most powerful attacks. Hit them first with a powerful non-physical move, then blow everything to pieces with a full on special attack.
When executed in such quick succession, the blitz assault was nearly impossible to doge. Either the opposing Pokémon wound up taking severe damage from the Leaf Storm attack, or they were dealt moderate punishment by Leaf Tornado.
"I have no intention of losing to you, Novel, so please, try and make this an entertaining match while it lasts."
Dionysus countered Psychic with Leaf Tornado!
Dionysus used Leaf Tornado!
(Damage to be taken: 54 - 65%)
Dionysus used Leaf Storm! (Damage to be taken: 77 - 92%)
