How is it that I've fallen in love with you? How can it hurt this much? Never before have I ever wanted someone this much. If I say I miss you about a thousand times, will it reach you? If I try crying and fussing, will you know my feelings?
Andrea had come to this particular location for a good reason: she’d gotten word that there was a certain Professor who needed help in acquiring a Pokémon he’d called a “Scatterbug”; and that there was a currently ongoing swarm of them appearing in Shui, the City lost by time. She could only guess as to why he needed help—but then remembered that there was a limit as to how many one could catch from these special “swarms” that had a tendency to appear once every ten days or so. Well, the ruling is stupid… but since it’s for this Professor… might as well humor him… she thought, having already stopped over in the Shui Pokémon Center and shuffling out majority of her companions; finally deciding to bring her own Rufflet out for a spin.
It didn’t take too long for the Coordinator to find the ‘source’ of where the Bug-types were converging—all she had to do was follow the shrieks of the horrified children and go in the opposite direction that they were coming from. She could only scratch her head in surprise as she headed towards the center of where all the little wigglers were coming together in one big mass; and blinked as she finally reached the outskirts of Shui—and saw that the grass was no longer green; but it was now a living, writhing, breathing mass of nothing but the Bug-types that had forced the young ones to flee the scene. “Whoa,” was all she had time for as the mass of Scatterbugs that had gathered on the fields quickly exploded and converged on her position, attempting to drive her back!
“This isn’t a swarm, this is a nightmare!” she shouted, quickly plucking out her companion’s containment unit and tossing it sky high; watching as a Flying-type emerged from the red beam; and promptly gave a surprised squawk. “I know! We have to thin them out!” she shouted; watching as the huge wave of Scatterbugs rose in a crest, threatening to crash down on them both. “Air Slash, now! Make it as flashy as you can!” she began, pointing forward and watching as her Rufflet let out a few more surprised, indignant squawking noises; before quickly flapping his stubby wings as fast as he could manage!
“Launch it! Before the wave of bugs comes down and crushes us!” she added, watching as two blades of crossed air rippled out from a point near the Rufflet and immediately went soaring towards the cresting wave; knocking back the first “assault” of Scatterbgs that had converged together in order to stamp them down. “Again! Keep on using your Air Slash and thin them out! I only need three of them! Go! I know you can do it!” she added, watching as the alarmed-looking Rufflet began to flap his wings as fast as he could possibly manage, sending out several more blades of crossed wind; aiming them at the base of the “waves” in order to dissipate the incoming horde. Slowly but surely, the entire crest had been knocked down; causing the Scatterbugs to let out a unified squeal of pain as their formation was broken and scattered; and wave after wave of the Bug-types were subsequently knocked down.
It was starting to look like it was going to take a while; but there was a second wave of the Scatterbugs that had appeared just behind the first, and she could only groan as she watched the black wave roaring, rising up behind the fallen first. “Oh, hell no! They’re back, FOR MORE!” she shouted, and could only sigh as her Rufflet let out another few squawks of deliberate surprise. “I know that this is going to get tedious, but…hey, wait a second… I have an idea!” she said, quickly slapping a balled-up fist against her free palm. “Let’s give those new moves of yours a whirl, shall we?! Nothing better than an actual, practical application of those new moves you picked up against this second wave!” she continued, pointing as the second crest of Scatterbugs came closing in on them.
“First things first… let’s speed things up! Tailwind, go!” she began, folding her arms across her chest and watching as the Rufflet immediately whipped up a burst of wind that fluttered from behind Andrea. Now that the Flying-type had picked up on some speed, she then continued, “Let’s try out your fire breath thing. Heat Wave!” she continued, watching as the Rufflet quickly flittered into position before taking a deep breath…and coughing up a few balls of fire. Oh, crap, Looks like this isn’t going to be good… she thought with a look of concern passing over her face, before she pointed forward and picked up, “Again! Let’s try making a bigger stream of fire with your Heat Wave attack! We can’t just keep knocking them down with Air Slash, can we?!” before unfolding her arms and clenching them into fists. The Rufflet then took another deep breath and attempted to breathe out another blast of hot fire, but instead came up with a few more fire balls of smallish size before sputtering out and hacking up an actual hair ball.
“Ugh, yuck! Come on, seriously?!” the Coordinator began at the sight of the hair ball that her Flying-type had coughed up. “I know you want to be a part of the routine, but this is a little—“ she trailed off before letting out a scream—the second wave of Scatterbugs was roaring up high above her and just about ready to come crashing down on her, burying her in the Bug-types! “Come on! You can do it!” she shouted; quickly raising her arms in order to shield her face from the cresting fall—when the Rufflet squawked and let out a sudden burst of flames; aiming right at the portion that was just about ready to come crashing down on his owner! The young lady then heard an earsplitting screech, followed by simultaneous cries of pain—the Fire-type attack as causing them to shrink back! “Again! Heat Wave them away! They’re about to fall down!” she shouted once more; and watched as the bolstered Rufflet then breathed out another stream of flames; catching a column of collapsing Scatterbugs head-on.
The crying screams of pain magnified the more the Heat Wave did a number on the Bug-types, and seeing that it was working, she called out once more, “Again, Rufflet! Heat Wave them and force them back; or at the very least drive them off!” before backing away as fast as her trembling legs could allow—and this time the Rufflet let loose with a steady stream of fire. It wasn’t Flamethrower, but at the very least it had to do! Andrea knew that the Flamethrower attack produced a stready stream of powerful flames; but this Heat Wave took some time to get going—and it was mostly just an expulsion of fiery breath on the most part. All the same; the falling wave of Scatterbugs were mostly caught up in the blaze of flames that the Rufflet was now breathing out—and she realized that there was an opening. “Cut them off at the base, stop the wave from forming up again! Heat Wave the bottom of the wave! Go!”
The Rufflet let out another agitated squawk; before quickly zipping forward—aided by the Tailwind from earlier—before letting out another breath of flames; and began to move around in a side-to-side sweeping pattern; and the chorus of cries and squealing continued as more and more of the Bug-types were either roasted, or were sent scattering out of shock due to the waves of heat that they were being subjected to. Sooner or later, she could see that the waves were thinning out—but so was her Rufflet; she knew that he was getting tired! The Coordinator knew that the longer the battle drew out, the more exhausted her Rufflet would become; and as soon as majority of the ‘waves’ had been driven back (and there were just several stragglers remaining) she had to end the battle as quick as she could manage.
She could tell that her Flying-type was starting to stagger where he stood; and she decided to cheer him on continuously. “I know you can do this! Don’t give up on me now! We’ve already gotten the wave thinned out, we can do this! There’s just several of them left! Go, go! Don’t give up!” she shouted, cupping her hands to her mouth and hopefully bolstering her Rufflet’s determination. She had no idea if the rest of her moves would work—but the remaining Scatterbug looked rather tough; and were definitely pissed off. “Uh-oh…” she began, watching as the three then banded together before spitting out one, two, three strands of String Shot, shooting forward right at the teetering Rufflet! “Incoming strings! Heat Wave them away, now! After that, let’s use your Air Slash once again and drive them back!” she remarked, pointing forward and watching as the three threads of silk merged and became one big, bad, mass of sticky whip. “Rufflet?!” the Flying-type let out; before taking another breath and releasing another blast of fire; melting the thick, pasty string as soon as it came in contact with the flames. “Alright, use Air Slash, and then take them into the air with your Sky Drop move one by one!” she continued, hoping that her Rufflet would still be able to hold out; considering that he’d been breathing flames non-stop and had been producing wave after wave of crossed wind blades ever since the initial waves of the literal ‘swarm gone wrong’ had attempted to attack them.
She didn’t have time to mull over strategies—because two of the three had released a simultaneous attack of Stun Spore; which then caught her companion head-on after he’d already sent out another duo of crossed air blades, knocking one of the three away. “Rufflet!” she heard her companion cry out, suddenly slowing down and feeling his limbs freeze up. “Oh, shit… not now!” she hissed, watching as the Scatterbugs then took advantage of the paralyzed Rufflet and began to slam their tiny bodies into the much-bigger Flying-type, attempting to bring it down into submission by using Tackle repeatedly against their adversary who couldn’t lift a finger to move. “Hang on! Bear the hits! Wait until I give you the signal, then we’ll try out that other move of yours!” she called out, looking anxiously as the Rufflet began to bear signs of getting scuffled and banged-up; as the Tackle attacks were slowly but surely taking a toll on its form.
The two Scatterbugs continued to hurl their little bodies into the Paralyzed Flying-type; and were just about ready to leave the Rufflet for dead when the third member of their triad came rushing back in, spitting out String Shot in order to further secure the Flying-type’s wings to its body. “NOW! Use your Roost and recover your health! Then try to break free of the strings! Use Heat Wave when they come in close!” while still clenching her fists as tightly as she could manage. The banged up, beat down, tottering Rufflet looked up with a baleful glint in its eye—but once his owner’s voice cut across the sounds of three Scatterbugs attempting to bring their oppressor down, he quickly flew into action, so to speak.
“If it doesn’t work! Keep at it until you succeed! I know you’re Paralyzed, but don’t let it get to you!” she shouted; still clenching her fists. Hoping that her words would be fuel enough for the Rufflet to snap out of the Paralyzed state, she watched and waited. It felt like an eternity; but there was a triumphant sort of strangled cawing noise she heard from her Flying-type—the Roost had taken effect; and the avian’s body was shimmering faintly! “Again! Use Roost once more! Then use Heat Wave when you can!” she continued; watching and hoping that a miracle would take place. It had taken the Rufflet a long time; but eventually the little Flying-type had managed to recover back to almost full health after the second Roost had taken effect; but he was still paralyzed. The three Scatterbugs, on the other hand, were so shocked, so angry that their target had seemingly recovered—they then began charging as one; attempting to ram their tiny little bodies in a full-on Tackle assault.
I know you can do it, come on, don’t let them knock you down… she thought as she closed her eyes and just…waited. Over at where the Paralyzed Flying-type stood waiting, it had gotten out several failed attempts at Heat Wave, before finally managing to fire out one of the biggest blasts of flame from its beak. The three Scatterbugs had literally somersaulted right into a trap; getting caught in the sudden burst of fire that had erupted from the Flying-type’s maw, catching them head-on and eliciting the loudest shrieks of pain from the trio. “Whoa. Calm down, little man,” she began, quickly walking over and tossing three empty containment units at the crisped Scatterbugs and watching as they got sucked into the red light. “It’s okay, they’re done… you did excellent,” she said in a hushed whisper, picking up the tired Rufflet and cuddling the Paralyzed bird.

pull me out of this sinking town i'm dying to live
something's gotta give
[attr="class","textscroll"]At least this time, the swarm was in Kaze's home city. Another Pokemon that was on Venus' wishlist, a Scatterbug, was around Shui this time of year. Which made the trip quick and easy, or at least Kaze hoped. Even though he definitely wasn't going to go down the Trainer route, he still wanted to help Venus get all the Pokemon she wanted. Once Kaze finally found the swarm, he waited for what seemed like ages until two separated from the group. He didn't want to wait any longer, the two would have to do. He picked two Pokeballs off and tossed them forward. "Alright, uh, go do your thing?" Kaze said hesitantly.
The Liteo and Buizel nodded and Jet went off first. He bolted forward, zigging across with Agility and confusing the two Scatterbug that were in front of him. Meanwhile, the Liteo exhaled, releasing a Flamethrower that split the two Scatterbug apart from each other. Now that they were split, Jet grinned. He did way better in one on ones rather than working with a partner. The Scatterbug he was facing chattered in confusion, which gave Jet his chance. The Buizel dashed forward in an Aqua Jet, pushing the small bug aside and knocking it out of the way.
The small bug type groaned in pain and shook of the impact. Slowly standing up, the Pokemon chattered angrily and reared its head back. Just as Jet landed, he found his feet caught up in a String Shot. The water type growled, irritated with the sticky goop and tried to bite through the string, eventually breaking himself free from the bug's string. However, in the time he was trying to break through, the Scatterbug had closed the distance between them. The Scatterbug bit down onto Jet's tails, nomming on it as Jet yelped in pain. Kaze flinched at the sight but soon his face fell flat when he saw the Buizel simply running around with a Scatterbug attached to its rear. "Come on, Jet, quit playing around!" Kaze complained.
Finally fed up with the Scatterbug, Jet glanced back at the Pokemon angrily. His tails soon became covered in water and he slammed it down onto the ground, knocking the Scatterbug out. He picked up the Scatterbug with a grumpy expression and dropped it in front of Kaze, who looked down at the Pokemon uncertainly and slowly reached down to tap it with an empty Pokeball.
On the other side of the field, the Liteo was having a rather hard time. Another Flamethrower scorched the field, but missed the Scatterbug completely. This one was more smart and managed to dodge each fire attack the Liteo threw at it. Then, the Scatterbug slid forward and ducked down, coming behind the Liteo and latching onto the Pokemon's tail with a Bug Bite. The Liteo mewed in annoyance and ran around in circles, trying to shake the Pokemon as best as he could, but to no avail. "Liteo, use Hyper Voice maybe?" Kaze suggested. If the Liteo couldn't hit the Scatterbug with a fire move, then maybe a sound based move would knock it off.
The Liteo whipped his tail around and took a breath. The deafening sound echoed through the area, making the Scatterbug release the Liteo's tail and cringing in pain on the ground. Finally, the Liteo had a chance. The final Flamethrower finally caught the Scatterbug inside, bringing the Pokemon down in a second. The Liteo then brought the Scatterbug to Kaze, releasing the Pokemon down next to its friend. At this point, Kaze didn't want to leave the Scatterbug's friend out in the open like this. With sigh, he tapped the second Scatterbug with a Pokeball as well.

AS SOON AS THE LIGHTS GO DOWN
THE SHADOWS ARE ON YOUR SIDE
”Seriously, does Nue have massive swarms every ten days or something? It’s like they secretly coordinate this thing just to fuck with the trainers.”
If any human who were even remotely familiar with Miguel were around –except maybe Miyu, who was the closest one to him- they would have been shocked by the tone of his voice and the coarseness of his language. However, anyone who might’ve known who he used to be wouldn’t be surprised by his words at all. Expressing his frustrations by voicing them out was a fairly common thing to witness from Franz Colleano, considering that he was a circus brat who never went inside a school or any fancy high-class place for rich people during his days at the circus.
However, his only companion at the moment was a shiny Numel named Pele, who looked more amused at his words than anything else. I wouldn’t know, Miguel. Pokemon rarely clump in large groups in Mt. Halo because of how dangerous it is for those who are not of fire and toxins.
Miguel chuckled and shook his head. ”It was a rhetorical question. I didn’t expect a homebody to know.” He sighed and stretched his arms up above him, fighting off a yawn. ”At least we’re only dealing with Scatterbugs this time. You’d take ‘em all out by yourself easy with the new strategy I was practicing with you along with your talents.”
Pele looked up at him and gave him a small smile. You flatter me so, Miguel.
Miguel gave her a roguish grin and a thumbs up. ”It’s the Hidalgo charm, my dear Pele.” He turned his gaze towards the forests around the mountain, which were crawling with a lot of gray creatures – Scatterbugs. ”But enough chit-chat. I believe it’s time to start phase one. Hulk out and bring out the sun, then force them out.”
Pele gave her trainer one last smile before turning to where he was looking at. Without warning, her body suddenly became larger as she doubled in size, turning from something barely reaching Miguel’s knee to something reaching his waist easily. Her eyes glowed a bright yellow as she looked up at the sky in her new larger form, making the clouds part and the sun to begin to shine intensely, making some of the Scatterbugs closer to the edge of the woods and ones milling about the grasses stare up in confusion and awe. She took advantage of their awe to open her mouth and send a blistering wave of heated winds at the Scatterbugs, sending them backwards to the trees and making them all scream in pain. This had the side-effect of having the Scatterbugs in the trees and further in the forest look towards where the screams are coming from, essentially getting their attention.
Perfect.
”You’re doing good, Pele. Now a second wave to really grab their attention. Don’t be afraid to burn some plantlife while you’re at it.” Miguel commented with a small smile as he could feel their pain and anguish at the edges of his senses.
Needing no further encouragement, Pele opened her mouth and fired off a second wave of blistering winds just as the Scatterbugs were starting to try and scatter like their namesake, only to get caught in the fiery winds and pushed further inside, this time unconscious. The blistering winds also had the effect of igniting some of the dry leaves in the area, forcing some Scatterbugs to hastily shoot their webs at it before it turned into an actual fire. The Numel capitalized on that by blasting a third volley of hot winds to burn the newcomers and push them backwards, this time following it up with a taunting bellow though she knew that she couldn’t use Taunt.
While it wasn’t the move Taunt nor was it similar move to it, whatever it was that Pele said was enough to get Scatterbugs coming out by the droves from the woods and from the grasses at the sides. Miguel was now officially impressed. ”More than I expected. This was worse than the wa- ahem, rabbit infestation. Oh well. Phase two, Pele. All-out assault time.”
To the Scatterbugs’ shock as they continued to gather around Miguel and his Numel, the strange creature began to grow even larger as she stepped forward, this time quadrupling in height and mass to become much more massive than her trainer. They gulped in unison before deciding to try and remove the Numel from the equation by slowing it down to a snail’s pace to the point that she was practically trapped by using an assault of string shots.
To their horror, all of their strings were dissolved almost instantaneously by blistering winds so powerful that they dried up the grass and ignited the dead leaves on contact. The Scatterbugs quickly put out that fire with their String Shots before it became a real fire, but at the price of being subjected to the insane blistering winds. This time, the winds were so hot and powerful that it burned the Scatterbugs and caused their nervous systems to overload from overstimulation from heat, rendering them unconscious in the process.
But it wasn’t over yet. More Scatterbugs poured out from the woods to battle the menacing giant Numel that the jerk of a trainer was using, hoping that numbers would be enough to overwhelm the gigantic beast of hot breath. Their hopes died and their minds sent off to lala-land as a sunboosted Heat Wave from the massive beast hit them right on their carapaces. However, not even seeing their fallen brethren deterred them from trying to fight off the massive camel and its dangerous hot breath that manages to hit so many at once, so they continued to pour out from everywhere.
Miguel was just amused at it all as wave after wave of Scatterbugs started to come out to try and overwhelm the gigantic Pele, only to be burned with a wind version of a flaming bitchslap from the proverbial hands of a Numel named after a goddess. And indeed, the way she was acting right now, valiantly facing off against hordes of Scatterbugs by herself with only her size, her hot breath, and the occasional calling out of the sun, was enough to make him grin in satisfaction at having named her correctly.
It was wonderful seeing a plan come together. The only thing more wonderful was being able to savor the spoils of his eventual victory. Miguel, being rather impatient today, went to the nearest Scatterbugs and tossed three pokeballs at the mass of fallen and charred bodies. He was going to have his spoils now while Pele fought off the swarm because it looked like she was going to be busy playing exterminator for this place for a while longer.

bittersweet.
Garrus liked whenever the gym was closed and he was able to go out and do some shopping, especially when the shopping was for something that he'd been looking for for awhile. Hidden in a little back corner of Shui was a bookstore that often got rare books that no one but the bug gym leader would really ever be interested in. The newest one that he'd gotten a call about happened to be something about vivillion patterns. He'd been wanting to catch a scatterbug for some time, if only to make the gym a little big brighter. After all if he could get a lot of them he could try and evolve them into the different patterns from all over the world. At least that's what this book was supposed to be able to help with. Stepping into the bookstore he began to browse, looking around slowly until he made his way to the section he was looking for. It was obvious that no one else had even touched the book since its arrival and as he went to pull it out something else tumbled from the shelf as well.
Aveline was more startled by the small body falling off of the shelf than her trainer was. Not surprising since the larvesta considered herself both the bodyguard and the mother of the even smaller bugs on the team. Garrus didn't particularly appreciate her riding around on her shoulder like she had whenever she was a hatchling now that she was a fully grown larvesta but he also wasn't going to tell her she couldn't. The weight lifted off of him as she flopped to the ground, nosing and pushing at the small, curled body that had been on top of the book. Speaking of scatterbugs... Letting out a distressed sound Aveline attempted to pick up the small bug, mostly dragging it towards her trainer as she obviously wanted him to help it. Leaning down he gently cupped his hands and lifted the weak bug up to where he could examine it. It was obvious if hadn't been eating and had been stationary for awhile.
A slightly thinner layer of dust where the bug had been resting showed that. The fire bug made even more distressed sounds when Garrus sat on the floor and attempted to gently prod the bug out of its curled state. It was barely warm but he could still feel it breathing, even if it was faint. What had it been doing there anyways? Pulling Aveline into his lap he gently set the bug on her. If anyone could warm it up it would be her. With fur and the flame body ability she even helped to warm him in the winter nights that he'd been on the road for. "It's alright Aveline. We'll get him patched up." His voice was gentle and he dug into his bag a little bit. He had a bit of peach juice left over from his lunch that would probably help the little bug.
Aveline kept nuzzling at the small bug laying on her, trying in her own way to help stimulate it. Gently he dipped a finger into the peach juice, hoping that he didn't end up spilling it everywhere as he moved it in front of the small bug type. It seemed like the little one wasn't to far from being just a small hatchling and Garrus had to wonder what he was doing in a shop like this. He was sure the owner hadn't gone out and caught it considering she was always cringing about how he was the bug gym leader. Not that she thought he was bad for it, bugs just made her extremely squeamish. Not getting much of a response from the scatterbug he instead gently pushed his finger against it's mouth, trying to get it to taste the liquid that way.
It seemed to work in a way, as the small mouth opened and began to nibble weakly on his finger. A sound of relief came from Aveline as she patted the bug encouragingly. The encouragement seemed to be all it needed as suddenly there was a small bite on his finger instead of just the nibble. Hunger and thirst took over as the bug began to make desperate noises whenever he took the finger away but he quickly brought it back with more of the liquid in order to help sate it. He didn't want to overload the little guy, especially not with the condition he had been in. Too much food and drink at once could make him sick.
"Not too much..." He continued the process of feeding the small Pokemon until it seemed like it was exhausted from the struggle again. It was breathing deeper now though and the warmth had come back to its body. No longer was it curled tightly in the signature look of a bug that was about to die but instead it relaxed against Aveline's fluff and she let it. Curling around her new friend slightly as it slept heavily. With a sigh he pulled out a Pokeball. He assumed that the scatterbug was a wild Pokemon so the only thing he could do to assure that it would get better would be to take it with him. Not that he minded. On the way home he would stop for some better supplements in order to nurse the small bug back to health.

"Oh god damnit"
This was the first words that came from the mouth of Josh as a string shot squirt would hit his head. This felt all too familiar from the times he'd encountered Wurmple, and he looked up with full intent of giving one of those red coated bastards a piece of his mind. Instead though, he would find a Pokemon he had not seen before in person, but had seen in pictures. Scatterbug. He would raise an eyebrow, as would Lightning, who stared up at the Scatterbug from beside him. The Scatterbug would chortle and start to inch away. "Oh no you don't!" Josh would exclaim as he would toss a Pokeball, bringing out Destructor, his Bunnelby. "Destructor, use Double Kick!" Josh would call as the Bunnelby would leap high into the air, before bringing two feet to the Scatterbug, knocking it off the tree. The Bunnelby would change it's trajectory in mid-air in order to hit the Scatterbug with another double foot, sending it crashing to the ground. "Don't let it attack! Super Fang!" Josh would call as the Bunnelby would land and charge the Scatterbug, with a new aggressive side as of late, one that Josh had noted, before unleashing it's fangs on Scatterbug. This time, Scatterbug countered, hitting the fang-wielding Bunnelby with a Tackle. Both attacks hit and both Pokemon tumbled back after the impact. "Don't give up, Destructor! You can do this!" Josh would encourage. He had to admit, Destructor had come a long way from just being the leader of his old Badlands digging team. He had stepped up, amped up the aggression, and had become quite the battler in his own right. He was one of his older Pokemon, who hadn't been an active battler at first, but who had adapted to a new role after his digging prowess was no longer required for constant Badlands digs. He was proud of Destructor, for sure. But Scatterbug wasn't going down so easily as he would fire String Shot after String Shot once they had some distance between them. The quick Bunnelby would charge toward it, dodging each String Shot with relative ease, before Josh called out "Super Fang!" once again and the Bunnelby would attack again, baring it's fangs and slamming them into the little bug as it was sent tumbling back from the impact. "Finish it! Earthquake!" Josh would call. "Bunnelby!" Destructor would let out as he would slam his ears against the ground, causing a large Earthquake that brought a large mound of earth crashing upward under the Scatterbug, sending it flying into the air. High into the air.
"... Maybe we overdid it" Josh admitted, scratching his head as the Scatterbug would splatter against the ground, fainted. Josh would blink and toss a Pokeball at it, surprised at the Bunnelby's strength.
