Soft ferns tickled the young man's calves, radiating a faint green glow as they reflected the bleak morning sun. Gathering back his flaxen hair, Linden allowed a soft sigh to escape him. The Meganium at his side gave her trainer an affectionate nibble, sensing all was not well.
"I'll be okay, my friend," he murmured softly, tugging at the collar of his cream-coloured blazer. "You needn't worry about me. Come, shall we find what it is we came for?"
Brushing aside the lush foliage, Linden found himself standing in a grassy clearing surrounded on all sides by towering pine trees. He'd come to the Safari Zone for a variety of reasons, and high on Linden's list of priorities was the proper training of his team. Of course, he did have less pressing matters to consider; one of them being the possible addition of a new team member.
A cool wind crept through the clearing, eliciting a slight shiver from the Grass Type Gym Leader. Another thing to consider; the abrupt, and certainly unusual change in Nue's weather. Slipping a hand inside the folds of his blazer, Linden withdrew a Pokéball, tossing the sphere skyward. "Cypress," he called pleasantly, "would you be so kind? Synthesis, if you will, please. It's become rather cool out."
Chattering happily, his tiny Petilil scurried about the glade, her leafy fringe quivering as she sought out a sunny patch. Finding an area that satisfied her, the Bulb Pokémon slowly began pulsing with a golden light, radiating a comforting warmth. Pleased with herself, Cypress bounced back towards Linden's outstretched hand, wriggling contentedly as he placed her gently atop his shoulder.
"Now then, shall we begin?"

He had to admit he was sorely tempted.
Bulbasaur were incredibly rare, even in a place like the Safari Zone, and Linden didn't know when another opportunity to catch one would present itself. The Petilil at his shoulder bobbed appreciatively, recognizing a promising recruit when she saw one.
"Well, what do you say, Cypress," Linden inquired thoughtfully, "shall we settle with Bulbasaur, or would you prefer to continue our search for Snivy?"
Chattering amicably, she fixated the Bulbasaur before her, eyes narrowing in thoughtful concentration. At length, she scrunched up her face (evidently unimpressed), shooting Linden a meaningful look before yanking at the man's flaxen locks.
"Ah," he murmured quietly, carefully extracting his hair from Cypress's grasp. "Let's move on, then." With that, Linden turned his back on the Bulbasaur, making a mental note to reward Cypress for her cooperation. She was, after all, his newest team member and a bit of a handful at times.

The first things which came to mind when observing Heracross were not what Linden would have called flattering. Sighing, the young man turned to his Petilil, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Kindly get rid of this, please," he commanded, "it's blocking the view." Pausing, Linden added, "oh, and try an Energy Ball attack. We haven't used that one in a while."
He'd come hoping to find a Snivy. Instead, he found some ugly armoured cockroach. Lovely. Turning, he watched as Cypress innocently approached the Heracross, her big eyes wide and cheerily disarming. She chattered away happily, swapping a few flirtatious winks, before pouncing. In a heartbeat, she'd delivered a powerful blast of bright green energy, effectively knocking the Heracross off its feet.
Smiling, Linden motioned for the Bulb Pokémon to follow him, hardly concerned about the Heracross's wellbeing. At any rate, it had scuttled off seemingly enough.
"I do hope we find something useful, it would be such a shame if we came out all this way for nothing."

At last.
Smiling, Linden reached into the folds of his embroidered jacket, extracting a second Pokéball.
"Dionysus, I require some assistance in the capture of Snivy. Might you be so kind as to lend a hand?" Realizing his Tropius might need some more guidance, Linden added; "Air Slash, I think."
At his trainer's command, Dionysus gave a great roar, shaking out powerful wings in preparation for its aerial attack. Nodding at Linden, Tropius took to the sky, quickly gaining speed as it rocketed upwards. Making a sharp, mid-air turn, Dionysus began his descent, wings tucked in for added acceleration.
Preparing his next command, Linden turned to Cypress. "Flying types are powerful against grass, however there are ways we can use a grass type move to our advantage." Running a hand through his hair, the young man lowered Cypress to the ground. "For instance, try stunning that Snivy over there with Synthesis. Watch Dionysus and attack just after he does, alright?"
No sooner had the words left his mouth when Dionysus came swooping down from above, very narrowly avoiding colliding with his trainer. The Snivy, however, had been wary from the start which meant its guard was on high alert. Even so, the Pokémon still received a healthy dose of Arial Ace.
"Now!" Linden called, shielding his eyes as Cypress emitted a dazzling beam of light. Wasting no time, he withdrew a Safari Ball, hurling it with impressive precision at the inert snake Pokémon. He could only hope his attempt would be successful.

The young man suppressed a sigh. How inconvenient, he thought mournfully, fixating the now-useless contraption. What a waste indeed, I suppose I'll have to use another Safari Ball...
Biting his lip, Linden called; "Cypress, Dionysus-- well done, my friends. I believe that's enough for now, though. Return!" Ignoring Cypress's disgruntled chatter, he quickly dispatched two more Pokéballs, adding; "Mirkwood, Phantom Force! Citrine, Magical Leaf!"
He should have known it wouldn't have been that easy. No matter, Snivy wouldn't escape him a second time. Gathering back his hair, Linden nodded at Citrine, who'd awaited his approval before launching her attack. Mirkwood, pleased to be free of his Pokéball, gave a sinister creak, eying the Snake Pokémon hungrily.
This time, Linden was ready. While Citrine and Mirkwood carried out his orders, he carefully aimed another Pokéball, waiting until the combined attacks hit home before throwing it.
