Kouji was back, once again. After hearing word that there was a chance that he could still further upgrade his current fishing rod, he then decided to go on a little “training trip”; having swapped out majority of the ‘mons that he was using (but leaving Sky and Rymi as back-up in case anything went horribly wrong) in order to at least have some more “grown-up” members of his family. He was quite alarmed at the sudden rate that his benefactor was evolving all of her ‘mons, while his own were still quite young and basically inexperienced. Sighing, he then slung the fishing rod over his shoulder and then checked—yes, he did have enough of these weird bluish “Dive Balls” in order to capture something, anything interesting that would come up. For now, though, there was still the matter of trying how to figure out how to get his Good Rod exchanged for that new-fangled “Super Rod”.
I have no idea. I honestly, really have no idea! They’re not telling me, they just say, “Go out and keep fishing,” but what EXACTLY are they getting on to? Doesn’t this thing come with an instruction manual?! He thought to himself with a rather cross look on his face as he then settled down against one of the man-made piers and then cast out his line into the water. What if the qualifications are like the way I got this thing; catch three or more of a particular aquatic creature? But I guess that only applies for upgrading the crummy Old Rod into this Good Rod that I have now… he continued to himself as he then stared at the line, bobbing up and down on the surf. Guess it’s time to get the younger ones trained up. I don’t want to fall behind! He continued to muse to himself; having brought along a motley of Pokémon that were strong against the Water-type.

Seeing that his line was twitching, he then decided to reel it in—and whatever it was on the other end, was definitely resisting. He felt the line go taut; he knew that if he forced it, the fishing line would break and he’d have to restring the rod (which he absolutely hated). He then relaxed his grip on the rod; before slowly but surely stepping backward in order to let the line slacken a little—and that’s when the line suddenly began shifting, allowing him to reel in whatever it was he’d snagged; and blinked as he saw that he’d managed to nab a Carvanha; of all things! “Oh, you again,” he muttered, looking down at it with some distaste before plucking one of the containment units and sending out the ‘mon inside. As the flash of red light faded away, it revealed a Joltik—one of the Pokémon native to his home region, Unova. “So… hi there, Lei. I don’t want to fall far behind my benefactor. Hence the little training trip. Now that you’re here. Care to show me how you’ll take care of this ugly thing?” he asked with a sheepish grin on his face; and the Joltik let out a buzzing hum, before quickly taking her position slightly ahead of the Breeder and facing down against the Carvanha, which seemed to be flopping on its side.
Without warning, the Carvanha had used Agility—closing the distance between them, before chaining into a Rage attack! Seeing that the little “shark-like” fish was wanting to start things of strong, he then grinned; and seeing that the Carvanha had veered dangerously close, he then decided to take it by surprise. “Lei, go ahead and use Thunder Wave! Then Screech right in its face!” while pointing forward—and the Joltik didn’t need telling twice! As the Carvanha began throwing itself over and over into the Joltik, the little Bug-type then released a quick jolt of electricity that suddenly shorted out once it had zapped the Carvanha; that caused the aquatic fish to hop back; growling since it had been zapped—before a loud Screech rang throughout the area; causing Kouji to flinch and step backwards a few paces! The Carvanha had been momentarily stunned, before he continued, “Alright, let me get out of the way… now! Use Discharge!”
As he scrambled back as best as he could, he then watched as the Carvanha continued to flop forward—this time fully enraged and now intending on taking out this ugly thing via Take Down—never got the chance to approach the Bug-type, as a flare of electricity suddenly pealed and shook through the area; catching the Water-type head on in the blast. Seeing as it still had some fight left, the Carvanha decided to continue with another instance of Agility—only to find out that after the momentary boost in speed it had achieved, it was a sitting duck! “Alright, again! Discharge one more time!” and the Joltik buzzed in indignance, before letting loose another flare of electricity; effectively cooking the Carvanha inside out and knocking it back into the water after that second blast of electricity. “That takes care of that thing…” he muttered, watching as the Joltik then hopped backwards and allowed him to step forward again, casting out the line of his Good Rod into the water.

As the Carvanha had been knocked into the water (and Kouji had subsequently re-cast the fishing line) he then looked down at the Joltik, and then wondered—would it be possible for the little bug to actually evolve on this journey? He could only wish—and was about to address the little Bug-type when he felt the line go taut once again. “Alright, let the line run its course first… let it go slack,” he began muttering, releasing the lock he had on the line and watching the spool unravel. Once the thing on the other end had been lured into a false sense of security, he then snapped the “lock” back on the line, and began reeling it in as fast and as nimbly as his arms would allow! As he continued to spin the line—the Joltik then stepped forward; and with an almighty heave, he pulled back with all his might and saw a black shape tangled on the line! The black shape then landed with a loud thud on the pier; and the Joltik knew that it was out to get his master—and he proceeded to scramble backwards as he pointed forward, “Let’s take this one home! It’s a keeper!”
“Tiiiiiiiiiik!”
The Shellder, apparently surprised that it had been yanked out of its natural habitat, quickly responded with a blast of icicles, fired quick and fast! “Screech! Then shatter those incoming shards in mid-air with your Discharge!” he began, quickly reaching for his pair of shades and slipping them on—before covering his ears. He knew that the loud Screech had echoed throughout the area; stunning the Shellder for a few seconds—and before it could fire off another barrage of icicles—the Joltik was summoning as much electrical power as it could manage, and released the Discharge attack in one powerful flare that went off like a flash grenade! He was lucky to have brought out the shades; because a sudden flash of whiteness engulfed the battlefield; before he noticed what the Shellder was up to—even if it had no legs, it was hopping on the pier, and was making its way towards the little Bug-type! It then began to use Clamp on the Joltik, and he heard a high-pitched squeal of shock; before realizing what a big mistake the Water-type had made.
“Thunder Wave! You’re practically in its mouth! Then get away from it with Agility, and once you’re out of the line of fire, Energy Ball!” he continued, watching as the Joltik tried to squirm out of the Clamp hold that the Shellder had launched at it—and was about to continue into another series of trying to squeeze the life out of it when the little Bug-type released a jolt of electric energy, before the Shellder realized that its own “lips” had gone numb. Now that it was stuck with its mouth somewhat hanging open, the Joltik then beat it out of there with a sudden burst of speed—Agility—before quickly skidding to a halt near his feet and then gathering an orb of green energy, waiting for the right time for the Shellder to come in again. As another barrage of small, sharp icicles shimmered into existence—and was eventually fired its way—the Joltik retaliated, sweeping its mouth and shooting down most of the shards, before catching the Shellder’s open “lips” and blasting the Energy Ball attack right at it! He knew that even if the creature was downed, it was still dangerous—and he waited for the thing to make its next move, which it did.
As the Shellder quickly raised its defenses by closing its shell—and seeing a metallic gleam shine off it for a few moments—he knew that it was still trying to stay in the fight; but it wouldn’t last much longer—“Lei, go for the kill! Discharge, now!” he shouted, pointing at the “vulnerable” Shellder, who had opened its mouth and had released its own screeching noise—which was unheard over the sudden flare of electrical energy that the Joltik had released. After the flash-grenade like “lights show” was over, he then waved his arms from side to side—and saw that the Shellder had fallen on its back side; and was slightly smoking a little. “Heh. Come here, boy,” he said, quickly taking out one of the weird Dive Balls and chucking it at the Bivalve Pokémon.

If Kouji thought that this trip was going to end on a peaceful note; that was where he was dead wrong. As the Dive Ball finally went off with a loud “ding”, before being transported to the Ranch where Neili would tend to it upon arrival, he then began to wind back the fishing line, before stepping backwards—his Joltik could only look at his “master” out of bewilderment, just wondering what the hell was going on. As he then stepped back far enough and let the line fly from the pole, he then heard the snapping of the line crack through the air, and heard the faint “plop” as the floater hit the surface of the water. “Lei, you may think I’m crazy… but… yeah, just watch me do this,” he said with a flustered grin on his face as he then looked out—and saw the floater twitch. Was he getting close to getting another Water-type for the Aquarium? He could only squint out as the line began twitching violently, before he thought…he felt the pier that he was standing on tremble a bit. Wondering if that was just his imagination, he then continued to stare out at the water; however the Joltik knew that there was something amiss—because her fur was starting to let off sparks of electricity.
“Uhhh…what? Lei, what’s going on…?” he began, looking down curiously at the Joltik, before noticing that it was all tensed up, as if ready to strike. He then chanced to look out at the surface of the water—and then heard an extremely loud roar; followed by a chorus that suddenly turned into a nightmare. He immediately recognized what was headed his way—it was a herd of Gyarados, and boy were they not pleased at all. “Oh, crap,” he barely had time to mutter before a large tidal wave, caused by the nine serpentine figures, suddenly crashed down on the pier. He’d barely made the dive and gotten the Joltik out of the way as he was shunted to the shore—and looked up at the herd of nine serpents, half in awe, the other half in complete and total shock. “Crap. This is totally unfair!” he shouted, before quickly plucking out three more containment units and sending out their occupants—the first flash of red light materialized into his Treecko, Yamori; its tail all bent at a weird angle. Even if he’d tried to cast the tail, there was nothing he could do about it—the injury would be with the Gecko Pokémon forever.
The second flash of red light landed with a heavy thud, and knew that he had finally decided to use Liekki’s companion, Varsi the Lileep, and even the Fossil Pokémon recoiled slightly due to the terrifying sight. The third and last flash of light that joined the three was a fluffy sheep; but he knew that little Voima could pack a punch in terms of electrical power. “Well, looks like I know what she meant by facing down the ‘Great Wall’ or something like that. Divide and conquer guys! Pick a partner and stick with them, work together, we’re taking them all down! I’m also catching some of ‘em, so go for it!” he shouted, pointing forward and the four assembled fighters then let out their respective roars, before leaping into action. As the four smallish Pokémon made a beeline towards the shore ready to attack and defend their caretaker, the leading Gyarados then let out a derisive chuckle, before roaring in response; issuing orders in its own way.
The Joltik quickly teamed up with the Lileep; seeing as it could hold its ground well on its own. These two then proceeded to stare down the first Gyardos who was charging at the shoreline headed right their way; before they heard a shout coming from the shoreline, it was their caretaker! “Var, Lei! Be careful out there! Var, I know you can handle yourself, but try to help Lei out there as much as you can! Okay?” he began, and then heard the Lileep cry out; before quickly planting itself into the ground, having used Ingrain in order to have a steady supply of energy, even if the ground was sandy—he knew that the Lileep could draw nutrients from anywhere. The Joltik then let out a battle cry; before he gathered his wits and shouted, “Lei! Let loose with your Screech! As loud and as fast as you can! Then use Thunder Wave in order to incapacitate that thing—and I leave the rest to you! You know what you’ve been doing since earlier? I encourage you to go all-out! Varsi, watch out for Lei, okay?!” he continued, before watching the two rush head-on into the biggest battle of their lives.
The Lileep, knowing that she needed minimum assistance, began gathering a ball of energy in order to back up the charging Joltik—who had boosted her speed via Agility—before letting loose with the Screech status change, and even Kouji had to clap his hands over his ears—because the sound was just that horrible, even if he was some distance away—and watched as the Gyarados was temporarily stunned due to the loud noise. Right then and there, the Lileep quickly fired off its Energy Ball, backing up the charging Joltik who was still charging forward thanks to its increased speed via another boost courtesy of Agility—and then the little Bug-type quickly released a globular sphere of nature energy, which it had fired off at the incoming Gyarados, who was now in the middle of a Thrash attack, literally kicking up sand and water everywhere. Now that there were physical obstructions, it made aiming for the Gyara slightly harder, but the Joltik powered through it with one last boost via Agility, cranking up its speed as fast as it could go.
Once the two globes of energy were released, the first Energy Ball flying slightly faster and further ahead of the Energy Ball that the Lileep had conjured up and sent after it, the two incoming attacks then melded together and went soaring right at the Gyara, who was still Thrashing around like some demented idiot, trying to hit the far nimbler, more agile Joltik that was now buzzing and running all around it, trying to tire it out! The combined “Dual Energy Ball” attack then smacked the Gyara dead-center as it stopped in order to gain its bearings, suddenly tired out from Thrashing around quite pointlessly, exploding in a brilliant flash of green light! Not wanting to waste another chance, the Lileep quickly followed up with two instances of Confuse Ray, the two sinister flashes of light merging and blinding the Gyara again a few seconds later—as it was thrown off-balance due to the “Duo Ball” that had smacked it upside the head. Now that the Gyara was confused, it tried to Thrash around some more; but ended up hurting himself instead.
The Joltik knew that it wouldn’t take too long before this one went down for the count, so it then took a flying leap and bounded onto the Gyara’s back; watching as the Lileep then switched to “energy draining mode” via way of Giga Drain; watching as another beam that was seemingly bubbling shot right at the exhausted Gyarados. Right as the Giga Drain had hit it right in the forehead, the Joltik finally let loose with a Discharge attack at extremely close range, literally frying the first Gyarados that had decided to come their way. As the little Bug-type hopped off the fallen serpent, they both heard another roar—and looked around to see that there was a second one headed their way! The two Pokémon then looked at each other; before a spark passed between their eyes—and leapt once more into action. This time, though, the second Gyara then began to shake things up by letting two instances of Twister roar through the area; swirling around the two small Pokémon. The Joltik let out a cry of dismay, while the Lileep grunted; letting the Ingrain status root itself firmly in place—before the ‘Tik bounded up again into the sky and released an aerial Discharge right at the roaring, bellowing serpent who was now extremely pissed off, it continued to launch Twisters right at the two.
Realizing that the Twister attacks weren’t working too well, it then decided to switch tactics; before suddenly letting out another roar, before quickly firing off two balls of draconian energy—trying to shoot down the Joltik that was rocketing around tauntingly in front of the Gyarados, trying to distract him while the Lileep was charging up another ball of natural energy. Once the ‘Tik had heard the distinct noise that the Energy Ball attack created (because she was familiar with it as well) she then bounded off before charging up her own attack; and then let her own Energy Ball loose at the same time the Lileep had discharged her own. The two Dragon Rage attacks had sailed completely over the Joltik’s head before exploding harmlessly in the sky; and was about to fire off another barrage—when it saw the two coming; and vainly attempted to divert the attacks with two more Dragon Rage bursts of energy—however the attacks fizzled out and exploded on contact with the stronger Energy Balls. As the two balls of natural energy collided with the Gyara, making it bellow out in pain, the Lileep then flung its head downwards—before suddenly gouging out rocks from the sandy shores below and flinging it towards the serpent. It was Rock Tomb, and the serpent was surprised to see the flung debris and made to swat them away with its tail—but it was caught in the barrage and was pinned down to the beach. Once it had been set up, the Joltik then let loose with another almighty Discharge; toasting the Gyara to kingdom come. As the second serpent flopped down atop the first, they thought they were out of danger—but it wasn’t the case…
Over at where the Treecko and Mareep were, the two were now staring down at the two Gyara that had charged them at the same time; pondering just how to take out the targets in front of them. Kouji saw that they were still standing there, before he quickly gathered his wits and shouted, “Mori, use that new thing we learned the other day! Make the sun shine, and get ready to use your Solarbeam on the two!” he began, watching as the Treecko was startled out of its contemplative state; before quickly beating its tail on the ground—never mind if it winced for a few moments—and quick as it had begun, it had ended—but now the sun was shining down with the intensity of a desert over their side of the beach. Now that Sunny Day had been set up on that side of the battlefield, the Treecko then began waiting on tenterhooks for another order. At the exact same moment, Kouji sprang into action, remembering that the little sheep was more on ranged support—and then issued the marching orders, “Voima, raise your defense with Cotton Guard! Use it as much as you can boost up your defense! Mori, do the same with Agility, crank up the speed and get ready to move and serve as a diversion!”
“Mareep!”
“Treeckooooo!”
The two then let out their respective war cries, and he watched as the sheep began surrounding itself in cottony, fluffy down; while the gecko began to dash around, picking up speed—and narrowly diving out of the way as their first Gyarados charged forward, eager to take a bite out of the Grass-type! “Sea beast, stay out of Mori’s way…” he hissed under his breath as the sun bore down on them—and now that the Gyara #3 was snapping at empty air, he decided to take the chance. “Mori! Let loose with Solarbeam, and do it quickly! I know you can’t sustain the blast for long, but start firing! Hack away at its health! Voima, set up with Charge, and then unleash a Discharge—but make sure not to hit Mori! You’re working together! Voi, continue that Charge and Discharge combo as much as you can allow, okay?!” he shouted, diving out of the way as the Gyara #3 decided to snap its fangs once more in another Bite attack. As the Agility-propelled Treecko dove nimbly out of the way, it then came to a dead stop for a few moments—but only because it was preparing the Solarbeam attack.
Gyara #4 then decided to let loose with an almighty Thrash attack, not caring whether it hit its companion—and that caused the two Gyara who were supposed to be fighting together to get into a scuffle instead! Gyara #4’s violent Thrashing around had smacked Gyara #3 (whether it was by accident or on purpose, nobody knows) but the moment the two Gyara came into contact with each other, a fight broke out between them. This made it all the easier for the two small Pokémon to snipe at the two arguing Gyaradii, the Treecko having already let loose with a powerful beam of solar energy while the other, smaller Mareep had used Charge, over and over again in order to raise the power of the Electric-type attack it was going to let loose once the flare of solar energy had finished cutting a swath across the two squabbling serpents. As the Solarbeam finally cut through the two squabbling Sea Serpents, the Treecko leapt back (disabled tail aside) and then crouched down as the Mareep quickly let loose with a super-charged, powered-up Discharge attack. The shock explosion was so bright, Kouji didn’t have time to dive for his shades and closed his eyes—but even then, the scorching explosion still burned across his eyelids. As he opened his eyes several seconds later, blinking rapidly to get the afterimage off his retinas—he saw that there were two extremely toasted, crisp Gyaradii that were now lying on the beach.
“Whoa. You two are evi—“ he began, when suddenly, the remaining five Gyaradii then decided to charge as one mighty, noisy, roaring unit—all of them were now using thrash in an attempt to catch the four ‘mons off-guard! He could only slap a hand to his forehead, before issuing the commands, “Okay, you guys… do what you must. Try to keep three of them, we need to stock the Aquarium…” and then heard the respective Pokémon crying out—before the three who were mobile charged forward; the Lileep choosing to stay on the rearguard and fire off Energy Balls as back support. The natural orbs of energy were screaming at the Gyaradii, who were being pelted—but it was only a tickle; while the Treecko held his ground—before firing off an almighty blast of solar energy; the Solarbeam cutting a wide swath across the incoming rampaging horde. The five who were Thrashing didn’t care if they were hitting themselves; they just had to take out the four small, annoying creatures! The Joltik then charged forward with its Agility; before quickly letting out two successive blasts of Discharge—while the Mareep continued to charge up with Charge; before realizing that it couldn’t charge up further—and let loose with two more blasts of Discharge; and the four bursts of energy combined and went off much like a very large, rocket-sized flash bang grenade.
Due to the blast of the Electric attack, the Treecko was forced back—and crashed into Kouji’s leg; while the Lileep quickly went on the defensive and raised its own defenses with Stockpile, before switching out at the last second with Substitute; letting the “clone” absorb the brunt of the almighty Discharge attack. As the extremely bright flash of light faded away; it revealed nine, crisp, well-done serpents… and he could only chuckle. The two electric-types were standing atop the pile of unconscious Sea Serpents; while the Treecko was shaking its head and blinking rapidly. The Lileep finally managed to unfurl itself from its rooted position, and all watched as Kouji walked forward, before finally tossing three Ultra Balls at three of the fallen creatures. “For the Aquarium. One of them will be ours to train…” he said simply, watching as the three containment units opened up, swallowing three fallen Sea Serpents in three flashes of red light…

As the three containment units went off with three successive “dings”, he then felt himself slump over, falling to his knees on the sand. He’d done it! He’d survived the onslaught of nine ferocious sea serpents! He didn’t realize that he was now gasping for air—having held it in for so long—when he looked up; was there something going on?! The two Electric-types then hopped off their “spoils” and began walking over to him when they were suddenly engulfed in light—he could only blink; before looking over at the Lileep that was now inching his way, for the same phenomenon was overtaking the Sea Lily Pokémon! He then had a slight suspicion something was going to happen—and then looked down at the Treecko he was helping get to his feet; and even the same light was pouring out of him! “I… I didn’t know that was a moment of extremity…” he began, quickly slipping his hand into his pocket and slipping on his shades as the sudden burst of light pouring out of the four he had out totally went off like an added flash-bang grenade.
Thankfully the shades protected him this time; and as he slipped them off, the three that were approaching him (plus the one who was now standing near him) had… changed. For one thing, all four of them had noticeably gotten bigger; the Treecko for one had grown much taller and had more leaf-like appendages sprouting out from all over! The noticeable thing here was that his tail was still askew; a trait that would carry on for the rest of his life. The Lileep had gotten noticeably much larger; with its head suddenly becoming more round—not to mention scarier. “Var… whoa,” was all he had time for; when he then noticed that his Mareep was now waddling in his direction on two legs instead of four. His yellowish color had changed to a pinkish tinge; but what surprised him the most was the change that had overtaken the Joltik—it was now much larger, had more legs; and even more static was crackling all around it! “Lei! Damn… I didn’t know that was what would make all of you guys evolve… come around here,” he continued, and three of the four then lumbered their way over; the Galvantula having to stay a ways away because of all the static electricity he was generating. The EleSpider raised a limb in celebration, while he hugged the other three—never mind if the Flaaffy was also generating the same kind of static, he didn’t care at all.
They didn’t notice that the three containment units were sent away to the Ranch; where Neili would get the shock of her life tending to the three serpentine beasts… at least his trip of a mission had succeeded!
