As Izumi and Zira the Torchic hopped over the ledges, they had reached one of the other pathways that led down from the City of Dragons. Normally she would have given up searching by this point, but she’d already seen what some of the “wildlife” looked like; and she had an inkling that something interesting was going to happen if she continued searching. After all, why waste a trip that she’d already made to just to look for one measly ‘mon… why not make it into a training venture as well?! “Heh, alright… now…” she trailed off, the Torchic finally catching up to her as she came up short of the next patch of tall grass. “Wait, you’re not going alone… I want you to go with someone…” she trailed off, reaching into her jacket pocket and finding just the one she needed.
With a flash of red light, she watched as her Riolu, who still didn’t have a name, appeared and then wagged his droopy ears around. “Huh. I haven’t named you yet, eh?” she muttered, watching as the playful little Emanation ‘mon hop around, looking at the extremely-serious Torchic with this look of confusion. She didn’t know that the Riolu line could read auras; and that’s what he was doing right now—taking a gander at Zira’s own aura, which he could see (in his mind’s eye) as something that looked like a shade of storm-grey, before approaching the storm cloud-colored Chick ‘mon and then giving her a hesitant nudge. While this was happening down below, Izumi was still racking her brains, trying to come up with a name that she could use… and finally decided on one! She then smacked her fist onto her other hand, before looking down at the Riolu, and then saying… “Well, I want you to work well with Zira, okay? I’ll call you Vincent. What do you think?”
In response, the Riolu then flapped his ears; finally happy that he had a name to call his own—and now that the little naming ceremony was done, she then looked at the patch of tall grass. “Shall we continue our search, then?” before walking ahead of the two unballed ‘mons; causing them to quickly follow her so that they didn’t get left behind!

It didn’t take too long for the traveling pack of three (one human, two Pokémon) to chance upon something; and the “something” that they’d seen made Izumi smack a palm to her face, for it felt like they’d been sucked into a time-warp; although this one didn’t look as aggressive as the Phanpy she’d encountered earlier. Zira was about to walk forward and engage, when she gave a sharp whistle that caused her to stop mid-step. “No, Zi. Stand down… let Vincent tackle this one. You two will go in shifts, and since you’ve been fighting non-stop since earlier, it’s your turn to rest. Vince, if you may…”she trailed off at the loopy Emanation ‘mon that was now circling around the two; before he continued to flap his ears in a playful fashion. Oh boy, looks like he’s a playful one… she thought, trying to hide her initial dismay—when the Phanpy decided to take things into its own hands; charging right at the Riolu, who didn’t seem to care that he was already being targeted!
“Vince! Behind you! Get out of the way with Agility!” she all but shrieked, and the Riolu had a split-second to turn around… before quickly darting out of the way and speeding away from the incoming Take Down attack that the Phanpy had launched! Visibly distressed, the Riolu then quickly hopped around, finally snapped out of the playful mood—and the Torchic couldn’t help but chuckle, snerking to itself as the Phanpy rebounded and then continued its aggressive assault, this time using Double-Edge on the fly! “What the hell… Vince, stop it in its tracks with your Bullet Punch!” she continued, this time secretly thankful that her ‘mon was now paying attention to her, at least for the moment! “Rioooo,” she heard him mutter, before quickly taking aim—and then letting loose the rapid-fire punches that were tough as steel, stopping the Phanpy short of slamming its entire weight into his own little form! Whew, at least he’s still quick on his feet… she thought as the little pre-elephantine ‘mon was forced back due to the sudden assault of punches, before she continued, “Chain it into Force Palm, go! Get going before it can react!”
“Rioooolu,” came the reply once more, and as the Phanpy then cantered around before this time deciding to go with a Tackle attack, the Emanation ‘mon then picked up the pace and waited for its opponent to approach… closer, closer—and at the very last second, he quickly turned aside and then unleashed the Force Palm from behind, catching the Long Nose ‘mon unaware that it had been hit! It then let out a cry of shock, before countering with an up-close and personal Take Down, slamming its weight into the recovering Riolu’s form, causing it to yelp out in pain! The Phanpy didn’t go without damage, however—she knew that Take Down had recoil, and then saw that the little one was also getting banged up due to the pummeling it was taking from Vincent’s attacks. “Alright, keep up, use Force Palm when the Phanpy gets too close!” she continued in an encouraging tone from the sidelines, and waited for the little Long Nose to come rushing forward—this time it was hell-bent on Double-Edge; charging very recklessly, not caring if it would knock itself out or not.
The Riolu then watched its opponent’s movements and waited—but it was a split-second too late, because the Double-Edge had connected, right before it could begin its assault. The Phanpy then snickered; but then winced in pain—why was it charging recklessly? Was it defending something? “Vince! Get up, don’t bow down to it! Use Bullet Punch before it moves!” and then the flurry of blows came first, fast, and most certainly blazing; because the Phanpy was still trying to pick up its bearings—but got pummeled from all sides with the quick-fire punches that the Riou was now unleashing. After the hail of punches had stopped, she then watched as it teetered… before collapsing flat on its snout! “Heh, wouldn’t Josh be surprised at this aggressive girl…” she muttered to herself as she then plucked out a spare Pokeball and chucked it at the stunned Phanpy, who was now too tired to move!

She then watched the containment unit twitch and shake, silently counting how many times it shook—before a ding went off, signifying that the Phanpy had surrendered itself to the Pokeball. “Heh, won’t Josh love this. A Phanpy of his own,” she said with a grin on her face as she strode over and picked up the now-occupied containment unit and seeing that the exhausted Phanpy was in it. She then tossed it to pass the time—but it didn’t come back to her hand mid-toss, as it had been transported to the Ranch (because she’d made modifications to her PC settings lately) all the way in Unova. She thought that they were out of the woods; but a rustling sound shook her out of her restful mode—and it was like a choir of angels had suddenly burst into song; at least in the back of Izumi’s mind. The human and the two Pokémon were now staring at a bird—or was it a bird—that shined and sparkled in the light of the afternoon sun. Hell yes. YES! About darned time! She thought with a smirk on her face as the Skarmory then came charging right into the little “clearing” where they were located—before suddenly going on the offensive with an Air Slash attack!
“Shoot. Vince, get out of the way with Agility!” she began, and the Emanation Pokémon looked up in time to see the blades of air whistling his way! “R-rioooo!” she heard him cry out, before going into the meditative state—and then suddenly zipping around the blades of crossed air that then whistled off harmlessly into the distance. “Well, isn’t this interesting. It looks like we’re going to have a bit of a problem here. Zi, go join Vince and help him out as much as you can. Flamethrower the bird if need be,” she said, giving the order—and the battle-excited Torchic then leapt into the battlefield, just as the Skarmory banked around and then this tie crossed its wings and released an Air Cutter attack, aimed right at the two! “Zi, you know what to do! Support Vince!” she continued, stepping back as things were about to get really hairy. The Torchic nodded, before zipping behind the Riolu who was now waiting for Izumi to give orders. “Vince! Don’t worry! Just weather what the Skarmory will toss your way! For now, focus on using your Force Palm if ever he gets too close!”
“R-riooooo!”
“Tooooorrr!”
Less than ten seconds after the words had left her mouth, the Skarmory then veered in dangerously close, its beak glistening—what was it going to use?! “Wait for it… closer… closer…NOW! Vince! Go, unload your Force Palm on it! Zi, back-up fire!” she shouted as the Skarmory reared back in order to begin its Pecking assault—and only hitting air, because where had the Riolu gone? “Rioooo!” she heard him cry out a few moments later, having cut across the attack range and suddenly unleashing the one-two punch combination—his way of executing Force Palm. The Skarmory let out a squawk of dismay, and was about to turn around and Peck the living daylights out of the Riolu when a sudden stream of indigo-colored fire then peppered the part-Steel bird! The squawk of dismay suddenly became a cry of pain; because who knew that the Fire-type attack would be boosted due to this mysterious thing called “same-type attack bonus”?! She then nodded, looking at the Torchic who was now spraying the fire of its Flamethrower attack once more at the Skarmory as it attempted to maneuver backwards in order to get out of the line of fire—but it didn’t know that the Riolu had snuck up on it, and then a grin so wide passed across Izumi’s face as she then nodded, and then continued, “Alright, end it! Force Palm, once more!”
“Rioooooo!” came the cry of assent, and the surprised Skarmory then stumbled backwards, finally landing on the ground with an unceremonious crashing noise—and the Torchic charged forward once more, letting the indigo stream of fire bathe over the squawking Skarmory as the Riolu then proceeded to throw the one-two punch combination that was its way of delivering Force Palm; the Skarmory attempted one last-ditch Pecking barrage but fell short; because the Flamethrower was just about ready to fry it alive! Izumi then saw the damage and then chuckled, before walking over to the hyper-zealous Chick ‘mon and then calling her to stand down. “Geez, Zi. I said, assist, not fry it alive,” she ended with a chuckle as she reached for another empty PokeBall and then tossed it at the almost-cooked Skarmory.

Izumi watched the Pokeball with the Skarmory shake apprehensively—it wasn’t just her who was keeping an eye out on the thing, the Torchic and Riolu watched and waited anxiously as it shook once, then twice… on the third try it stopped struggling, and she let out a squeal of joy! “Yes. Yes, yes, YES!” she shouted, quickly scooping up Zira and Vincent as the Skarmory’s containment unit was then sent off to the Ranch in Unova; in order for the Skarmory to be able to at least fly free in the presence of the other creatures. Their little celebration was cut short; as another Gligar came to the scene—was it the same one she’d encountered earlier? Hopefully not; because at this point she decided to try to at least raise one of these critters for herself—she knew that Thomas had one of them, so she could at least call him up for advice if in case she had some problems raising the thing! “Alright, you two… want to try working together?” she asked them as they cuddled in her arms; and they both gave nods, before hopping out of her hold.
“Don’t gang up on each other; you work together as a team, okay? Now, go! Do what you have to, Zi! You’re capable enough of helping. Vince, let’s get going with Agility, then close the distance with your Bullet Punch!” she continued, watching as the storm cloud-colored Torchic took a deep breath, trying to gather its focus—Focus Energy had come into play! She then quickly dashed forward, hoping to draw the ire of the Gligar; and then leapt up into the sky at the very last second, before coming down on the incoming insectoid with a Slash attack! “Tooooorrr!” she heard her cry out, before quickly inhaling and launching a peppering of indigo-colored flames right at the charging Gligar, who was preparing to use Acrobatics on the Riolu! In response, Vincent then charged out of the way courtesy of Agility, feeling much lighter on his feet—before suddenly turning around and then launching a sudden barrage of flying punches with his hardened fists!
The Gligar never got the chance to unleash Acrobatics—because it was now getting smacked around and cooked from the side—when it decided to change tactics and then quickly kicked up some dirt—it had used Sand Attack at close range, causing the hail of punches to stop when the Riolu let out a cry of surprise at the underhanded tactic! “Oh, so the Gligar wants to fight dirty, eh…” she trailed off, seeing that the Torchic had stopped, waiting for her orders. With a nod in Zira’s direction, the Chick ‘mon then turned up the heat and then immediately bathed the Gligar in flames once again, drawing its attention and causing it to instead attack the Torchic with Feint Attack! “Vince! You’ll be okay! You can recover! Get up, continue the Bullet Punch assault! Do it twice if you have to!” she added, encouraging the Riolu on; and she watched as the Emanation ‘mon picked itself up from the sudden blinding attack; before quickly closing the distance again and then unleashing another hailstorm of hardened fist punches; trying to wear down the Gligar that had been taken by surprise after recovering from the Feint Attack.
“Zi! Do it! Full power!” she continued, and at those words, the Torchic then intensified the heat of the Flamethrower attack she’d unleashed, while the Riolu was still hammering away at the Gligar with its relentless Bullet Punch attack. The insectoid was now trying to smack one of the two down with Acrobatics, but with the way it was being pummeled from opposite sides, the Gligar soon went down under a hail of punches. “Right… now…” she trailed off, plucking out another Pokeball and then chucking it at the exhausted insectoid ‘mon, who was now smoking due to the aftereffects of almost being cooked alive—again—by the Torchic’s Flamethrower from earlier.

As the containment unit began shaking, three pairs of eyes watched it apprehensively… it shook once, then twice; on the third try it stopped shaking; and now she had a peculiar Ground-Flying type to call her own! She then tried to scoop up the Pokeball that was no longer quivering… but there was a sound of… something that was crashing, and charging, and… “Oh you havegot to be kidding me!!!” she growled the pitch of her voice climbing higher and higher until it was a shout… was the “Great Wall of China” back to haunt her again?! This time was going to be slightly different, though, since back then, most of her team members were more adapted to fighting against an entire “wall” of Onix and Steelix. This time, she was going up with a slight disadvantage—she had a Fire-type, which was not going to bode too well in this case.
Most of what she’d encountered so far was either of one of several types that Zira could not take head-on: Rock or Ground. “Oh, you’ve got to be joking again…!” she said, her voice rising until it became a screech once again; before slapping a palm to her forehead. “Crap, this is definitely not the time for us to run into these guys… we’re getting out of here!” she called, quickly recalling the Torchic and the Riolu—they would return to fight another day. Today was not a good time for them to go up in a battle against rampaging rhinoceros-like Pokémon that had a hive-like mindset as well…! “We’ll be back… eventually,” she said, high tailing it out of the area before the Rhyhorn/Rhydon bunch could notice that they were not exactly… alone.
