Izumi knew that it was time for her to actually submit the first part of the “initiation intel” that she had tried her best (and darned hardest) to gather; since Zerne was asking for information about all the other participants who had entered the Tournament, she had to comply as much as she could. Luckily, she was able to watch most of, if not all, the remaining matches that she had come to visit; to see if she would be able to pick up any tips in order to improve her dismal battle experience, and was now holding several folders with scribbled notes, headlined with the name of each contestant as well as their apparent “team” of Pokemon—at least, the ones she could catch them using while out on the battlefield. She knew that they were in a class all their own; but for now she was just content in watching what was going on. The day they were going to meet was a lull day; who knew where her master was at the moment?
She knew that it was best not to talk about his defeat at all, so she slid out the folder with his own information in it, however short it was, and began reading it briefly. Well, at least what I can gather he has really strong Pokemon… she thought to herself as she thumbed through the short file that had his notes in it—she had even gone through pains in order to be able to attack a picture to each and every file that she had. As of the moment, there were approximately six files; with one in her hands right now. She could only guess what he was going to do with all this information that she had gathered for him; so she’d already gone on and made herself a copy of the same information that she was about to pass on to him; if but to keep a track record of who to watch out for if in case things got nasty and all six of her ‘mons ended up fainting at the hands of one of these individuals, master included.
She was seated at another one of the many cafes that were set up in order to host the massive amount of guests that were pouring in to watch the Tournament; and wondered just where he was. She then took out her phone and checked if there were any messages—none at the moment. She then sighed, placing the phone back into its hiding place and resumed reading her master’s file, to idle the time until he actually arrived.

Normally, Zernebog asked people to meet him in the morning. Well… when the meeting wasn’t about illegal things that needed to be as clandestine as possible, in which case he preferred the dead of the night or the early hours before dawn.
There was just something about mornings that gave it a refreshing atmosphere of happiness and ease for him, though that may be because he wasn’t one of those who worked at an office from nine to five like most adult employees. It was a perk of being an archaeologist.
However, this time he had specifically asked for the meeting to be in the afternoon because he still needed to let off some steam after that irritating loss against that Amber Kazuki. A loss because she outmatched him he could stand (however barely because he had his pride) because it would be straight cut. But a loss due to time out and judge scoring? That got his blood boiling something fierce and it needed release before he did something stupid and rash.
Thus, he had stayed in the gym the entire morning, going through an entire work-out routine that ended with him wailing on and breaking two heavy duty punching bags in the Pokemon Center. His knuckles were raw and red after such abuse, but he didn’t mind the throbbing pain that persisted even after he rubbed some balm on them after a brief shower and wrapped them in bandages before donning his gauntlets to cover them.
A random thought flittered into his head about how he may have too many bandages on considering that he wrapped his right hand in another set of bandages just to hide his Key Stone from prying eyes, but he just shrugged. It wasn’t as if he cared.
Before his mind came up with anything snarky to refute that, he finally spotted his student (that still felt weird to think, let alone say) reading something while sitting in one of the cafes in the area. With an amused grin, he decided to play a little trick by approaching as quietly and unobtrusively as possible towards her table. Given his background in stealth and the noise around them, he was easily able to slink into a seat, hopefully without her noticing. He then waited for a few moments before speaking.
”Reading your own reports, Izumi?” Zernebog casually asked as he leaned back into the seat.

Izumi was reading her master’s profile so intently; she had very nearly forgotten to blink! Realizing that she had forgotten that simple process, she then forced herself to blink a few times; it was like the way she was looking at the paper would be more than enough to bore a hole into it. Sighing, she then set down the file that had her master’s data in it, only to be surprised with his sudden appearance at the table where she was seated! Trying to hide her surprise as best as she could, she then cleared her throat and then began, “More like, I was studying your file... I’ve gotten all the information that you have requested. That’s the information file on each contestant that had entered; along with pictures of them; to the best that my digital camera can capture without sacrificing quality. I’ve also listed down their move sets; or at least the moves I have seen and observed,” she continued, quickly closing the file on her master and then sliding the other five folders across the table for him to observe.
If he cared to look inside each file, there was a picture attached to the upper-right hand corner; along with their entered name in the tournament; listing what region they were from, and what specialty their team excelled in. beneath that was a list of information as well; detailing all of the seen ‘mons that she had encountered while watching the tournament, along with the move sets that she had seen the Pokemon use listed down. The file that contained Amber Kazuki’s data was quite thick since this entrant had made it all the way to the final matches; and so was the file that was named Elinda Aspen. However, the file that had Gwyneth Ferris’ name on it was quite unusual; because in a way, she’d been in Orre some time ago and had done some research while she was at it, to try and find out the Gym Circuit challenge level there, if in case she herself wanted to try and go after Orre badges. “That’s as much as I can get. I also saw one of the entrants do something weird with their Blaziken… it changed form; you can find out about it here… unless you already know about them,” she continued, sliding the file with Yumi’s name on it as well.
There were two more files underneath the entire pile, if he chose to look too. Gathering all this intel did take me some time… having to contact people in Orre again did set me back quite a bit, but hell it’s worth it… she thought to herself as she held on to the last file she’d made; the file on Zerne himself.

Zernebog used to be in the espionage and theft business not too long ago. He used to live and breathe the principles of stealth before he had his change of heart and decided to be an honest trainer and archaeologist to complete his disguise from the people who were probably still hunting him in the region he had left behind. Therefore he couldn’t help but smirk when his student the minute tell-tale signs of shock when she looked up at him.
His smirk became even wider when his suspicions were proven correct when Izumi admitted that she was rereading the reports. Not just any reports, mind you, but his own dossier. Something that he already knew would be incomplete due to the nature of his loss against that girl with the Salamence.\, but he wasn’t about to tell her that.
”Finished, eh?” Zernebog tapped the folders she had slid to him before picking up the one on top once she had finished talking. ”Let’s see the results, then.”
Just as he had opened the dossier on Gwyneth Ferris though, the bandaged hand flipping the page stilled when he heard his student add a new piece of information. Something about a Yumi with a Blaziken changing form.
He chuckled and glanced at Izumi over the folder. ”Oh don’t worry about that, Izumi. I know exactly how she did that. It’s not rocket science.”
It was magic.
Zernebog lowered his gaze back to the folder, still smirking as always. Now it was time to browse through and read all of the folders that Izumi had handed him.
Some time later, Zernebog had finally finished speed-reading through all of the dossiers that she had given him. Most people wouldn’t have finished it as fast as he did, but most people didn’t have extensive training in speed reading as well as an equally-extensive background in reading itself.
”It’s thorough for what it is….” Zernebog began. ”Can still use a little work in the descriptive sections and the analysis portions, but it’s fine otherwise.”
He then raised his eyes up to Izumi and smirked. ”But my evaluation isn’t done yet. My dossier, please?” He extended a waiting hand with an expectant expression.

While she was sneakily taking glances at his report, her ears perked up at the mention of how he knew how to replicate what she’d seen in one of the matches; but there was something else about the way he’d said that made her want to chase down the information even more. Wondering if she would have to go the distance just to find the information that she would need in order to be able to attempt to replicate the same magic (hell she’d even managed to take a few seconds of video of it before her camera’s battery started complaining that it was running low and needed to be charged) she then shelved the thought that was bothering her at the moment, and decided to continue perusing the file in her hands. It wasn’t until sometime later that she heard his voice again; and this time he wanted to see his own file!
But… hey wait a second! This is the only file I haven’t made an extra copy of! She began to herself, hoping that she would still be able to get her hands on it—in hindsight she’d made copies of everything she’d let him read, all save for this one. I have a bad feeling about this… she thought as she then closed the folder and then slid it across the table. “Thanks for the vote of confidence,” she remarked, in response to the files that she’d made so far. Sure, they were lacking in some areas here and there, but at least she had managed to get most of the vital information that he needed to see. She also noticed that there was a smirk on his face as he’d asked for his own file; and she could only shudder at the hidden malice in that look on his face. Is he going to burn it? Or do something worse? Raced through her mind as the file folder sat near his grasp. She could feel the tension in the air—what was this weird thing going through her right now? Was something going to happen?

There was an amused twinkle in Zernebog’s eyes as he watched the girl slide over his own file to him. ”You’re welcome.” He drawled as he picked up the file, which was one of the thinnest out of all of the files that Izumi had.
Though he hadn’t admitted it yet, the largest chunk of his test comprised how many facts about him and his battling style she got right. There was no way he could do a 100% confirmation on the other competitors even though he knew all of the important people she had documented one way or another. He wasn’t the type to check up on the life and times of a person if it wasn’t needed for business. This was why he had to see his own file, because it was the only one he could confirm with the highest degree of accuracy.
Hey, if he was going to be forced into this Battle Coach gig, he might as well give it his all. It was the Romanov way and he was a Romanov to the bone.
With that, he opened the folder and began reading, this time paying a bit more attention to the detail. Despite the thinness of the folder, there was a lot of content about his pokemon. However, they seemed to focus mostly on Achilles, Hydros, and Hyperion. In fact, there was no mention of his sixth pokemon at all, with only a blank placeholder in its place. This was completely understandable though, since he had only used one in the match with Akira and four in the match with Amber. It was inevitable that one would be left out of the equation. It was also inevitable that she wouldn’t be able to note his trump card because he never used it in the tournament either, unlike Yumi who used it freely.
Overall, she did pretty good and worked with what she had. Could still use some work though. Okay, maybe more than some.
Zernebog tore his eyes away from his folder and placed it back on the table. ”Alright, now I’m done reading.” He then slid the folder back to Izumi and smirked. ”You pass this first test. Not with flying colors, but not with the skin of your teeth either.”
He then tapped the table for a few moments before talking again. ”Alright, since you finished this one, it’s time to move on to the next trial. Are you ready for it?” His smirk turned challenging.

Izumi was actually wondering if she would be able to get the files back; because it was alright with her if he took the others, but not his; and she knew she’d fudged up on a few of the details in it—mostly about the number of his own Pokémon. She was well aware that all people who had joined the tournament had to enter six, but sadly she had only seen five of his in action; so there was a bit of lacking information on the sixth member of his team, and she had just decide to put a placeholder in its position instead; since she wasn’t able to actually see anything about this mystery member at all. She then watched, as with some amusement on his own face, he began reading his own file. What if I messed up? Did I do something wrong? She thought, hiding her nervousness as best as she could and always keeping an eye on him while he was reading through what meager information she’d managed to gather.
After some time, she then saw the file sliding across the table and she then snatched it up, perhaps just a bit too quickly, and then hid it as she waited for the verdict to fall. She was prepared to wince, when he then said that she’d passed, but apparently from the way she understood it, she needed more effort put into it! Well, not surprising since I’m just a spectator in the crowd and not one of those “battle analysts” who commentate the battles themselves… she thought to herself as her ears then perked up for the next part of the “challenge” she had to get to. “Whatever it is, bring it on—I’m ready for it,” she said with her best determined look in her eyes, not willing to give up because, to be honest, she really wanted to learn how to be stronger—if not now, then when? How would she be able to do that?

If a Psychic type were to look in Zernebog’s mind right now, they would find a version of him smirking like a Gengar while reclining on an antique leather couch. She bought his words hook, line and sinker once again. Izumi made it so easy to push her buttons and nudge her towards what he wanted to do. It reminded him of his easier marks back when he worked for Arcane and even before then, really. It was fun then and it was still fun now. To think, no one had to bleed, die, or get eaten for him to have his fun.
Small favors, eh?
The amused gleam in his eyes grew stronger as he focused his full gaze onto his student. ”Since you’re so enthusiastic, I’ll have you do this one right after the tournament is over.”
The gleam turned a bit predatory. ”I want you to…” He held off for a few moments to draw out the tension and the suspense. ”…find and catch me a Larvitar. A Larvitar you have to beat into submission along with any other pokemon you find in your path. You know where to find one.”
He smirked again. ”And this time, maybe I’ll even have someone tag along to see how you do in real-time battling. Think you’re up for the challenge?”

She had this feeling that his eyes were either hiding something, or he was just planning another dubious thing—though she couldn’t read minds—she could tell, since she’d had a very good teacher on the subject of focusing one’s attention on their eyes. Curse that redhead, he had the most expressive eyes I’ve ever seen… and no it’s not Bailey, it’s that dead doppelganger of his… she thought for a few moments, shelving that as she continued to watch him from across the table. She could only guess whatever harebrained scheme he was coming up with; and once he’d laid it out on the table, she knew that she was all set—all she had to do was to find a Larvitar for him, right? Who knew that this was going to be so hard on so many levels, was something she was not expecting at the moment. At the mention of someone tagging along to watch her battle in real-time, she could only guess what he was planning—what did he have in store for her?
“Alright, that’s fine with me; I’ve been meaning to go out to the Safari Zone to look for a few things anyway,” she said, wondering just what he was planning up his sleeve! Shame I can’t read minds or hear thoughts like that sponsor of mine in Unova… but then again that would be very scary if that was an actual possibility… she thought as her thoughts then drifted to the team that she was going to eventually use; because she knew that there were a few… well, a lot of Pokémon in her PC that needed to get out and get some exercise! “Once I get the Larvitar, I’ll let you know right away,” she continued as she then plucked one of her last “Pokémon Catcher” calling cards and then sliding it across the table—written on it was her mobile number, so that he could drop a line or two… or several if need be. “I’ll get going right after the finals are over. I’m still gathering more data on those two that made it all the way to the end,” she added in an off-hand manner.

Izumi bit, just as he had expected. Zernebog grinned in satisfaction as he leaned back into his chair. This teaching thing was starting to get him the good stuff~ He didn’t have to waste a trip to the Safari Zone in order to look for one of the pokemon he had been interested in for a long while and was now much more interested in after finding a certain stone.
And despite the twinge of irritation he felt at the off-handed mention of the finals that he didn’t get to go to, his satisfaction and certain details of the next assignment he gave her kept the grin on his face. ”I expect no less, really.”
He then reached for the card that Izumi slid over and glanced at it before pocketing it. Well, he supposed that this was one way to get a girl’s number. ”I’ll be sure to contact you when I send over the observers.”
He then pushed the chair back and stood up from his seat. ”Now, I’ve got some other business to attend to before watching the finals.” He waves idly before starting to walk away. ”Expect that call soon, Izumi. Later.”
With that, he left the area as suddenly as he seemingly came.
