Izumi was on the fence about returning to Hoenn so early; but knowing that if she was going to stand an actual chance this time in a real Gym Battle. That last battle in Unova wasn’t all that pleasant, to say the least; and that her Hydreigon had developed quite a phobia for Electric-type moves. This time though, she was going to take things easy and challenge the first Gym in her home region; the one located in Rustboro. She hoped that her travelling around would have given an edge in terms of actual battle; but most of what she’d done was just battles between wild ‘mons… “Am I even ready for this?” she asked herself, looking at the exterior of the Rustboro Gym. Wondering if it was possible to keep going, he then shook her head, before knocking exactly three times on the door and then making her way inside.
As the door snapped shut behind her, she looked around and saw that there was someone who was standing near one of the weird-looking pillars—but was unsure if she was going to approach the guy. Instead, she began looking around, wondering if there was something else that needed to be done—she’d had the same experience back in Unova, when she made the biggest mistake of her life by charging into a Gym with an unevolved ‘mon… and pretty much she got the worst ass-kicking of her life. She then turned to the individual that was there, and then asked, “Is the Gym Leader here? I want to take the challenge…” while looking around. She’d decided to go on a Gym Challenge again—but it was taking place in her home region—as opposed to her original plan of saving Hoenn for last.

A ruff, gruff, hairy man in a business suit named Johnny was currently waiting for one of his trainee teachers to come and give him the papers he'd left in the academy -the power of seniority and privilege- when some young girl suddenly entered the gym and approached him, asking to battle Roxanne. Since she didn't have a folder or a set of papers with her, it was safe to assume that she didn't take the test yet.
Great. Another one. You'd think these kids would learn to take the test first before coming here in order not to waste their time. Well. Whatever. It was Roxanne's headache to deal with, not with his.
"Challenge, eh?" Johnny chuckled and scratched his chin. "Another gal here for Roxanne. And a pretty one too. Lucky woman."
He then grinned and poked her on the shoulder. "So tell me kid, have you taken the exam and passed yet? You know you gotta take one before you can fight it out with Roxanne."

As she was looking around and trying to place which one to deal with, she then noticed that the gentleman she’d seen earlier caught notice of her—she wasn’t that tall but he was leering over her at one point—and then gave her a poke in the shoulder. Test? What test wait a second what is this… gimmick all about? She said to herself in the back of her mind; as she backpedaled just a bit and then asked, “Well… I wasn’t informed that there was a test to take before actually going in here. Alright, where should I go and what am I supposed to do?” she asked a few moments later, hastily taking mental notes down as well; just in case she needed to re-challenge the Gym again—if she lost.
She then added, just to be on the safe side, “You know, you should have a sign outside that says, ‘No Entry Allowed unless you take the Test’ or something, since it can be pretty misleading. And no even if I’m a Hoenn native, I grew up in Lavaridge, and then went on a journey around the world and only got back now. You do have to excuse me since this is my first actual, legitimate Hoenn Gym challenge,” she said in one go, stopping to just take a deep breath in order to calm herself down from panicking. Luckily, she’d had good teachers with regards to a wide variety of subjects and information about the Pokemon world.

Johnny raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms, waiting until the chick finished to say his piece. Man, were chicks always this naggy and long-winded? No wonder his bros tuned them out when they were going on like this? And to think, he can't even leer at her since she looked underage. Damned luck.
He then blinked when he noticed that the barrage of squawking was finally done. Or it looked done, at least.
"Are you done?" He deadpanned. He waited for a few moments before continuing. "In order... I'll get to that, yes, there was a sign out there that you lot ignore. Only -you know- phrased better than what you just said, and no I don't care that this is your first time."
He then shrugged and turned around."Follow me if you wanna take the test. I'm sure that Roxanne has a couple of back-ups just for this sort of thing. Lucky you."

You be lucky I’m patient… if you were just as arrogant as he was then I’d deck you… she thought, resisting the urge to sigh sarcastically; since she heard his response and it was just simply either one of two things: he hated doing this, or he didn’t pay attention to what she just said. That or smack him with a park bench, or whatever comes first… she thought once more with an inaudible huff, but it came out more like a sigh. She then kept her silence as she followed him to wherever he was headed; and you could say that there was a slight case of nerves starting to overtake her at that point in time.
Who knew that some Leaders could be so nit-picky about this sort of thing? She thought to herself, seeing that as of the moment, her companion wasn't too happy abou the proceedings at all. Either he was just tired of it, or just wanted out so bad, and she silently felt the same way as well. “What now?” she asked him, secretly thankful she had a pen in one of her jeans pockets, since he did mention that there was a test. She was itching for a skirmish; and hopefully this one would provide a good challenge... provided the passed this exam or whatever first.

Johnny wasted no time in walking down the twisting and turning maze of corridors that constituted the back of the gym. The girl was quiet, which was weird since he didn't peg her to be the silent or the demure type like maybe that other girl that challenged the gym a few weeks ago. Well, all the better for them both since it allowed him to focus on not getting lost in the maze-like structure that the stupid architect from long ago built. This was a rock-type gym, so why make navigating so hard anyway? Weren't they all supposed to be direct to the point or something?
It wasn't until they reached the front of examination room that she finally spoke. Johnny turned his head towards her and glanced at her before tapping the door with a thick finger.
"You are going to wait here while I go get your exam." Johnny grinned ruefully. "Might as well give you a little prep time to remember all of the tidbits you possibly can for the exam."
He then stepped backwards and gestured for her to go in. "Now go in and stay put, alright?"
He waited for her to get in before turning around all the way and walking towards the secret place where Roxanne kept her spare sets of exams.

There was an actual reason why Izumi had fallen silent—for she was actually trying to prepare herself for what was to come with the ‘examination’ that she had to get through before actually getting to fight said Gym Leader in question. In any case, she heaved a very inaudible sigh; before looking around as she followed the ‘receptionist’ through a maze of corridors that sprawled out behind the actual arena itself—how did a place so small house facilities so large?! She continued to keep up with him—but very nearly losing him at a few turns and bends—before finally coming at last to a long hallway that ended in what looked like to be a small schoolroom of sorts.
As she heard him address her question, she tried to catch a look inside the room—it was small, but she wasn’t sure if it was dingy or serviceable until she actually got to see the interior of said area. He then moved aside, allowing her to pass—she then looked at the doorknob, and with a little heave courtesy of her shoulders, gently shoved the door open—she was surprised to find that it was unlocked and not bolted shut. Inside was a dank-looking room that smelled faintly of wet rocks; and when her hand brushed across a chain, she pulled at it and watched as a light bulb flickered into existence; revealing the contents of said room.
There were several neatly-fixed and recently-cleaned desks, and there was some semblance of a blackboard hanging behind the wall opposite the door. She then sat herself down on the first desk she could see; a bit battered but still pretty durable. She braced herself just in case the desk and chair fell into pieces at the slightest contact with her weight; but sighed in relief as the thing held her weight. Now that her ‘companion’ had left her alone in this room, she then began running her hands through her hair, trying to think of what chaos and madness she would see when she took this ‘exam’ that was apparently a pre-requisite for battling Roxanne.
I wonder what the questions are. Hope there’s no mathematics involved, because I really suck so bad at anything that’s not simple addition to division… she thought, taking a deep breath to calm herself down!

Sometimes, Johnny wondered if Roxanne was overdoing it on the coffee. It was making her paranoid. So paranoid that she put the back-up exams on the other side of the building in order to lessen cheating incidents. Sadly, it wasn't his place to question her executive decisions for the gym since he was just her lackey. Only the executive board at the academy and the head honcos down at the League could question her.
Didn't stop him from grumbling about it all the way to and from the storage room though. He still had his rights, lackey or no. And they weren't Team Magma or Aqua, so their rights actually had a say. At least this gave the student some time to sweat and/or study what little they can.
It took over thirty minutes, but he finally got a copy for the kid and got back to the front of the door. Plastering an amused smirk on his face, he opened the door and waved at the girl with his free hand.
"Oh, hey. I'm back with your test." The man sauntered over to her desk and placed the test on it before walking to the teacher's table and plopping down on the chair. "Now, this is your last chance to back out on the test. Failure would mean that you aren't allowed to retake it for a week. You ready for this?"

It only took a while, but for Izumi it felt like forever—where did he disappear off to? Surely it wouldn’t take him this long to get the papers that I need to straighten out to get them done… unless he decided to get the extra-hard batch for me but I don’t know what really is going on. Ahh, whatever. Try to hold it in… try to keep it in… she chastised herself as she stared at the dingy black board in the room; then turned her attention to the hanging light bulb there that provided the only source of illumination within the area. After a few moments, she then rested her head on her palms and then proceeded to stare out into space, counting the seconds that were ticking away, that eventually stretched into minutes…
After what felt like an infinity; the same gruff voice jarred her out of her torpor and then he was back in the room with her, and then she heard the sound of paper being placed on the surface of the desk she was occupying. She then heard wood scraping against the floor, and then a few moments later the same man was seated at the teacher’s desk; and then asked her if she was going to back out at this point. Uch as she wanted to roll her eyes, she didn’t do that—and instead stared at him with a burning determination. “You already got the papers for me. Why should I ask you to return them? That’s what I’m here for, to take this test and challenge the Gym Leader. So, what do I need to do?” she ended, gesturing towards the face-down paper that was in front of her.
At that moment she then took out her pen from her jacket pocket and then placed it on the table and waited for further instructions…

Johnny grinned. "Cheeky aren't you? And spunky too. I like that."
He clapped his hands and then gestured to the paper on her desk. "Since you're game, you can flip over the paper now and read the instructions. Cheating or not following the instructions will net you an automatic zero and an inability to challenge the gym or take the exam for a month. Got it?"
Johnny paused for a second to wait for her answer before waving at the paper again. "Begin."
Please read the instructions before beginning this examination. If they are not followed then 5 points will be deducted from this exam. Each question is worth 2 points each.
1. Give three examples of moves that induce the POISON status. 2. True or False: Fire pokemon cannot be inflicted with the BURN status. 3. Give the mechanisms by which Eevee evolves into Umbreon and Espeon. Be specific. 4. List down the elemental evolution stones and pair each one with an example pokemon that evolves using it. Place forms before and after evolution. 5. What is STAB and give an example of its application, complete with computations. 6. Would Focus Punch be effective on a Banette? Why or why not? If not, give a move which will be more effective on the Banette. 7. Which move would allow you to melt into shadows as well as attack using them? 8. Given the typing neutralities, resistances, and weaknesses on electric types, which move and/or ability would be best on them to optimize the typing (read: make them better)? 9. In which part of the Hoenn Region would you be able to find a Nosepass? Give the method of encountering one. 10. What type is always associated with fossils and why?

As she heard the final words before the test would officially begin, she then gave a chuckle and then said, gesturing around her for a moment, “How can I cheat if I’m the only one who’s in this room? Also, no way in hell am I going to cheat, so let’s get this done,” she ended, before finally flipping over the paper and seeing that it was an exam that consisted of ten simple questions… but who knew that these ten questions would give Izumi hell for the entire time she would spend answering the entire questionnaire? She then turned her eyes down to the paper and then began reading the instructions, before twirling the pen in her possession and then uncapping it. She then read the first question, and secretly chuckled, seeing as there were only three moves needed (and she already had one of them in her possession).
1. Three moves that can leave the Poison status on an opposing Pokemon are: Toxic, Sludge Bomb and Cross Poison. Except for Toxic (which leaves a puddle of noxious purple goo on the battlefield which worsens the Poison with each passing turn), the other two moves must have some kind of contact with the opposing ‘mon in question.
After getting the really easy one off the bat, she then turned towards the next question, and almost chuckled to herself, because she had several Fire-types in her ‘army’, and she’d only discovered this pretty recently, and with another grin, she then wrote on the paper;
2. False. Fire-types cannot be burned by their own flames—in fact if a ‘mon has the ability Flash Fire and it is hit with a Fire-type move, the power of the ‘mon’s Fire-type attacks will increase up to 1.5 times.
Now that the second question was down, she then felt a grin pull at the edges of her mouth; simply because the next question was one she could literally answer in detail; in fact she could go on and on and on about it for hours; having studied up on the different evolutions of an Eevee. She had to restrain herself as she began to write this down:
3. There is only one way to evolve an Eevee into one of the two mentioned—Espeon or Umbreon—but the time that they evolve would have to be specific.
a. For an Eevee to turn into an Espeon, said Eevee in question must be extremely happy—by taking them for massages; always using them in battle and not letting them faint, or giving them treats. The caveat here is that in order for the Eevee to evolve into an Espeon, they must be used in battle during the times of daylight; which is approximately from 8 in the morning to around 5 or 6 in the afternoon.
b. For an Eevee to turn into an Umbreon, it’s just the same way as raising an Eevee into becoming an Espeon, the exception here being that if you want to raise the Eevee into an Umbreon, you must evolve it during the nighttime; the safest time frame for this would be from 9 in the evening until 3 in the morning of the next day (for insomniac Trainers who have battles in the dead of night).
She then chortled to herself, because the answer for the third question was too detailed; and then saw that the next question also had something to do with evolution, but it was of the different kind—evolution by Stones. The problem here was that Izumi knew that there were a lot of different kinds of stones; and she was not exactly too sure which ones would qualify. Okay so what am I going to list down, just the four stones, or do I play on the safe side and list them all down? She thought to herself, before considering the consequences and then listing down the ones that were considered as ‘elemental’.
4. There are several Evolution Stones that are used to evolve Pokemon. The elemental evolutions are the Fire Stone; the Water Stone; the Leaf Stone; and the Thunder Stone. Some examples of ‘mons that evolve using these stones are:
a. Fire Stone: if used on a Vulpix, it will evolve into a Ninetales
b. Water Stone: if used on a Shellder, it will evolve into a Cloyster
c. Leaf Stone: if used on a Gloom, it will evolve into a Vileplume
d. Thunder Stone: if used on a Pikachu, it will evolve into Raichu
Resisting the urge to snigger, she then got to the next question—and this was where she finally encountered a question that would actually cause her to get stumped. STAB? What in the freaking hell is this supposed to be?! Wait a second I’ve never encountered this before… what in the world… she thought, staring at that question for a particularly long time. She then caught sight of her watch and saw that she could not waste so much time; and then after racking and scouring her brains, she then remembered what Leon had told her about it. She then picked up the pen once more and began to write…
5. STAB stands for Same Type Attack Bonus, meaning that when an attack is the same type as the Pokemon using it, it will gain a 50% boost to the attack being used. An example of this is if a Charizard uses Flamethrower the Flamethrower will be a lot stronger because it is the same type as the ‘mon using the move.
Since Flamethrower's base attack value is 90, and thanks to STAB it gets a 50% boost when used by a fire type. You first multiply 90 by 50% which equals 45 then you add 45 into 90 to 135. Meaning with the boost from STAB when a fire type uses Flamethrower (or any other Fire-type move) gets an additional 50% boost to their attack of the same typing.
Secretly glad that this question was now behind her, she then saw that the next question had something to deal with type match-ups again; and this time it was pretty easy to get to. The pen then wrote out the following answer:
6. The move Focus Punch (which is of the fighting-type genus) will not be effective on a Ghost-type, since Fighting-type moves are rendered completely useless on the type in question. An effective move to use against a Ghost-type would be the Dark-type’s Bite; as Bite will be twice as effective on a Ghost-type.
The next question then had her at another crossroads—because there were several moves that could do so and then allow the user to attack while hiding from said shadows. Hoping that the answer she was going to list wouldn’t be the wrong one, she then began to write:
7. A move that has this description would be Shadow Sneak; since the way this move goes would be that the user would extend their shadow behind the target and then suddenly emerge from the shadows behind said target. The bonus to this is that this move always goes first.
She saw that there were only here more questions remaining; and now that she was on the next one, this was one that would prove to stump her for quite a while—just like the STAB question had done. She then sighed, before realizing that she had to keep going; as this was the only way that she could be able to fight Roxanne—but why there was a test, she would never know. Sighing once more, she then turned her attention back to the test and then began writing out the best that she knew:
8. Regarding making use of the Electric-typing in order to make them better; they should be built towards Speed, since agility is needed in order for Electric-types to strike first. There are actually two Abilities that I know of that would make Electric-types function better: Lightningrod and Motor Drive. Both have the same concept—if the ‘mon that has these Abilities are hit by an Electric-type move in question; then one of their stats would rise by one level; therefore making their stats more effective and powerful.
a. Motor Drive raises the ‘mon’s Speed when hit by an Electric-type move
b. Lightningrod will draw in all Electric-type moves to whoever has it; and the Special Attack stats of the ‘mon will rise by one stage
Eight down and two more to go! When will this end?! She thought to herself as she looked up out of her torpor some time later and then saw that the last two questions were pretty easy to tackle. The ninth question was something ironic, seeing as this was her home region, she should know about how to encounter the Nose-faced ‘mon (as she called Nosepass) and then she began chuckling as she wote down the answer:
9. Nosepass can be found in Granite Cave near Dewford Town. As to how they would appear—they are ‘rare’ in the sense that they do not appear too often. One could try to find them by using Rock Smash on the many boulders that litter Granite Cave; or if one is lucky enough, may encounter them while traversing the area.
Last question! Man I really want a drink before getting to the battle, I feel like my voice is so worn out from lack of use… she thought as she shook her head and heard a slight cracking noise, meaning that her joints had frozen up for a while. She then slapped her left hand to her nape as well, because there was a spreading, numbing sensation that was spreading from having her head bent down for so long. She then hissed, as there was one last question; and she then wrung out her right hand and finally began writing the last answer that was needed:
10. The one typing that is always associated with fossils is the Rock-type, because before they are revived into their living, actual selves—each and every fossil was one a hunk of rock with a defining feature. One such example is the Sail Fossil, when brought to any facility that can resurrect ‘mons from fossils, the Sail Fossil would become an Amaura.
After writing out the final word, she was just about ready to flip the desk over, because she was done at last! She then took a look at her watch and saw that it had taken her a little over two hours to get the entire test done; because there were some questions that almost blockaded her. “Well, I’m done,” she said, standing up and stretching herself as she waited for the ‘proctor’ to get the papers and then look over the entire contents of the examination. I’m sure I got one of the questions wrong… but whatever, let’s have it… she thought to herself as she sat down once more and waited for him to look over the answers that she’d written.

Johnny always found it amusing to watch students and strangers alike struggle with the problems in the exam. For him, there was a sense of accomplishment in making them wrack their brains to find the correct answers to the questions that he and his fellow teachers had composed.
But alas, all good things must come to an end. Well, it was for the best anyway, since even he didn't have the attention span to watch someone quietly struggle through the test for all of the allotted time. He wasn't that attentive. Heck, even Roxanne brought entertainment with her on the rare times that she herself proctored exams.
"Oh good, you're done." Johnny chuckled as he stood up from his seat and waltzed over to the girl's desk. He snatched the papers and then walked back the same way he had come from, and wasted no time in grading them.
Johnny smirked. Just as he expected from the girl. She looked like the smart type after all.
"Congrats, girlie." Johnny raised the paper up for her to take. "You pass. Go take this to Roxanne so that you'll be able to challenge her for the badge. Have fun."

After she’d thrown down her pen; the proctor up front quickly sauntered over and grabbed her papers before shuffling back to the front and then began checking through it. She was absolutely certain that she had gotten at least one of the questions wrong, but imagine her shock and surprise to see that she’d gotten two of them mixed up instead of one. Ah hell, that was supposed to be my forte but who cares, I just want to get it on, she thought as he raised the paper up above his head for her to take, and then muttered something about challenging Roxanne. About freaking time… she thought as she quickly unfolded her hunched frame out of the chair and gave a quick stretch by raising her arms over her head and then silently stamping a few times to get the feeling back in her legs.
“Thank you,” she said, approaching him as she quickly took the examination papers and then made her way back out from the examination room; trying to find her way back to the front. Due to the size of the area, she had almost gotten lost a few times, had it not been for the signs that were placed here and there at certain intervals. She then found herself back out in the front of the Gym’s ‘reception area’ once more, and this time went straight to the arena, looking around and marveling at the size of the enclosure. It’s small, but eh, let’s get this done and over with… she thought as she quickly looked over and then called out, “Hello? I’m Izumi, and I’m here to challenge the Rustboro Gym. I have the test with me,” she added, waving the sheaf of papers over her head just in case the Leader was somewhere in the shadows, waiting for her to arrive…

Once the girl was gone, Johnny smirked and took out his pokegear from his jacket. He pressed a number on his speed dial and pressed the phone to his ear.
After five rings, the other person on the line finally picked up.
"Hey Roxanne? There's a challenger waiting for you out at the battle arena. She just finished the exam, so you don't need to ask her about it. Seems you've been quite popular with the trainers lately~"
"I'm sure. I'll be there in a few minutes. Thank you for informing me, Johnny."
Click!
Roxanne put down her pokegear and placed it back into her pocket. With a small sigh, she closed the book that she was reading and placed it underneath her desk before getting her regular book that she always brought with her for battles. Once she had that in hand, she pushed herself away from her desk, stood up from her chair, and went out of her office.
Somehow she already figured that she would get another challenge today, if the last five ones this month was any indication. It was a good thing that she decided to relocate her work here or she would have had to take her custom expressway to the Gym. As it was, her current arrangement cut off a lot of her travel time and enabled her to get to the battle area within five minutes, which was earlier than the challenger apparently.
She then decided to wait in the shadows until the girl arrived, which thankfully did not take long. As soon as the girl announced herself, she stepped out of the shadows and extended a hand.
"I am the Gym Leader, Roxanne. Your paper, please."
Post by Izumi Yamamura on Mar 17, 2014 3:07:18 GMT -5
She was wondering if the Leader was already here or was she just hiding; because to be honest, she was secretly excited and expecting some kind of an over-the-top, flashy, fantabulous entrance; what she was not expecting was the swift, silent, and almost ghost-like entrance from the Gym Leader! She almost jumped backwards a few steps out of surprise as a hand suddenly came from out of the shadows, and a voice then rang out from somewhere in front of her. Crap that almost gave me a heart attack… she thought as she took a few steps backwards, before lowering her other hand that had the papers in it and then extended it to the hand in question.
“Here you go,” she said, handing it over into the outstretched hand; and then waiting on tenterhooks to see what would come out of it. Would she be able to continue with the challenge? Would she be able to show what she was made of? Would… would it even happen at all… gah why the hell am I so nervous about this?! She thought to herself as she backpedaled some more steps and maintained a respectable distance; while waiting for whatever else to unfold next…
