Since the blowup at Rhichissme, and the..."after party" he had had with the man going by the name Miguel, Mao had felt out of practice. It was an odd sensation, especially due to the thoughts leading up to it. He had done well at Rhichissme but...the battles he had took part in were so quick to close that he honestly felt as though he could not truly see if he had progressed or not as a trainer, let alone if he had progressed as "End". Now back from his vacation, he needed to rectify this one way or another, and while it would be easy enough for him to "practice" on punks littering the streets as he used to, but he felt he nee a challenge, something that could even help him train the smaller members of his team. To this effect, he would visit one of the few operating gyms he knew of. The Ice Gym of Bosky hamlet.
Now the leader of this Gym, Brook, was a man Mao was smart enough to research. Typically pounding challengers in double batles. A foe he was perhaps not ready to face. However the Co-leader was equally open to challengers. This girl was, as he had heard, not on Brook's level, but still a fair challenge to those looking for the Gym's badge, so he had decided to take out two birds with a single stone, practice his skills against this Madeline, and earn a badge in the process if he was to be succesful.
"Let us hope this goes well..." with the monferno by his side giving a small nod, the two stepped closer to the transformed ice rink, marveling at the entire Gym formed from the ice that Mao presumed was from the pokemon of the leaders. It was truly an odd way to run a gym, and his mind couldn't help but wonder how they kept it running in the dead of summer. Would Icebrgh not have made more sense from simply a maintanence standpoint?
once inside, he was hit with a small surprise, a selection of 5 paths. "Hm...any idea Blaze?" The monferno shook his head, equally confused himself by the selection of paths. "I suppose we choose one...?" Another confusing point of the Gym it seemed...was this some way of testing challengers? Whatever the case, he selected the middle path of the 5, hopsefully heading towards the gym leader he wished to face.
She normally enjoyed having the Gym to herself. It gave her time to train a little, to work with her Pokemon, to think strategy. She was at home in the ice and cold. It was better than making her electric bill soar even higher by continuously pumping arctic winds with her air conditioner. It was much easier for her to be in the Gym – she spent her time in the battle room, the ice beneath her a sheen and sheer surface. Others might be unused to the snow and cold, but she was at home in the ice – she’d never have an accident moving around here. Plus, it made her choice of dresses less of a drag. Outside, she’d often bake with the stuffy dresses, but inside, she was comfortable, neither too cold nor too warm. Some other days, like today, she even wore the fancy dress to a battle, if only to make a statement.
When the application on her phone which told her when a person entered the Gym beeped (courtesy of Brook, thank goodness) beeped and rang, she blinked a little. She wasn’t expecting a challenge today, but it was very welcome. The Gym Leader wasn’t necessarily battle-hungry, no, but she always enjoyed a good battle. It was good training for her Pokemon, and she was confident. There was always a sense of annoyance when it came to stating the fact that she was a Co-Leader: Brook and she understood that it was simply a title, that she was just as capable and skilled as other Gym Leaders. In fact, she had some strengths that others might not have, just like any other Trainer out there. Every so often, she would have to teach some lessons to whelps who thought that she was the weaker of the two. They were technically right, but oh-so-wrong.
Why was she wearing the ice dress? Because it made her feel cool. No real other reason. The icy fabric draped around her and hugged her form perfectly, a long blue cape draping behind her. She was sitting down, turning on the eagle eye view on the Gym’s surveillance system so she could see the challenger’s progress. She at least assumed it was a challenger. It was the case sometimes that people would go in, challengers or otherwise, and end up so lost in the maze that she’d have to go get them out. The maze wasn’t necessarily her design, but Brook was here first, and she wasn’t going to force her ideas on him.
She felt an exhilarating rush fill her. If she had something, she had skill with being observant, and she could tell, even from the weird angle that she had right now, that this wasn’t just some beginner Trainer. This might be a delightful challenge. He even had a Fire-Type with him. This might interesting after all.
((OOC: You picked Path 2 , which is a dead end. You must return back to the path choice and pick again))
With the hall he chose having come to pretty much a dead end, Mao couldn't help but feel a twinge of frustration, one that even made him give a visible twitch in response before bringing a hand to rub his eyes, his other arm supporting it by the elbow. "It's one of THOSE gyms..." While Mao had never challenged a Gym himself before he had watched a couple of shows about one or two of the more famous gyms. The challenges the leaders set up, interviews with challengers and the gym leader, stuff like that, and it always annoyed him whenever he was watching an episode about a gym like this. The puzzle was simply a tie waster with no rhyme or reason...whatever the case, Mao would play this game, for now.
"Come Blaze, let us return to the entrance and see where the next path will lead us."
Having chosen the middle path last, the 3rd of 5, Mao moved to the one second from the right, the 4th of the 5 as his mind counted it.
Personally, she would have never put up the maze if she had the choice, but Brook was technically the first one here, and he was free to put whatever challenge he so desired in the Gym. At first, she had thought it a time waster, something to annoy the challengers so they wouldn’t come through. If it was up to her, she would have made a grand ballroom, ice sculptures and brilliant decorations. Perhaps that was her title coming through. Of course, such a thing would be very… unmanageable in the Bosky area, since they had to take it down every weekend. She did in fact wish that the League had managed to get a Gym in Iceburgh, but alas, that was not the case.
But as she watched on, somewhat amused and concerned at the annoyance that the challenger was feeling, she remembered the value of the maze. Ice was cold, calculating, ever-present and ever-changing. The maze was to test the patience of the challenger, their willingness to keep trying even after making mistakes. The maze tested their mettle, but also tested their discipline. Many Trainers had tried to melt down the walls and find the Gym Leaders, only to be told that they were disqualified for breaking one of the first rules they were told. Madeline still wanted her Ice castle, sure, but she could certainly appreciate the maze. Of course, she couldn’t say that about the challenger. She wondered if that Fire-Type of his would be able to battle in the ice-covered battlefield effectively. Most Pokemon began slipping and tripping in their first ice experience. Something that an observant battler such as Madeline took advantage of.
As she watched, she saw him turn around. By a miracle, it seemed, he picked what she knew to be the right road. There could be some deduction to be done with the maze, but most people just picked randomly until they found what they wanted. But if he was approaching, well, then, it was time for her to get ready. She prepped herself on the ice throne at the other side of the battle arena. This was one of the few things she had requested from Brook, something she had her Pokemon build when she was taking care of the Gym. It was a translucent seat of ice, as if it had grown from the floor itself. Well, it had, she had her Pokemon make it. It was a bit of flair that she felt was necessary with her title as the Snow Queen of the League.
She was confident. She had to be. As much as she believed in her strength and knew that she was no pushover, she knew that she was weaker than Brook. She refused to be the weak link, the cop-out option for people who wanted a badge. She was going to give this challenger a… well, a challenge, and she planned to win. Or, at least, she certainly would try. The battlefield was to her advantage, as was everything else. It was just a matter of getting things right.
As the challenger walked in, her icy blue gaze fell on him, her eyes scrutinizing and analyzing as much as they could, her position on the throne graceful yet magnamonous. The way he walked… he was confident. Annoyed, but confident. Hopefully, a bit too confident. Beside him was a Pokemon, perhaps one of his first choices for the challenge? There was something she was missing, and that ticked at her. She didn’t like not knowing. Nonetheless, her voice was clear, an attempted regal tone, yet polite and amiable, as she announced: ”Welcome, challenger, to the Bosky Hamlet’s Ice Gym! I am Madeline Flanoir, and am one of the Leaders of this Gym. I congratulate you for overcoming the challenge of the maze. But now a larger challenge lies ahead if you desire my Gym’s Badge. Do you know the battle rules of this Gym?”
((OOC Note: You picked the first path, directly leading you to the battle arena. Congratulations))
With this path seeming to be far more straightforward in nature, a small sense of confidence in his decision was starting to fill him, and as far as he could tell at least, any sense of annoyance with this gym's odd little opening puzzle was starting to leave him. The cold walls around him were easing some of the nerves he was feeling about this upcoming battle. He had bested three interpol agents in a single day, and while they were trained, he was certain they would be nothing in comparison to a gym leader. Someone in their own element, a master of their chosen pokemon typing, and battling challengers daily. This would be a trainer of true skill he would test his skills against, and that meant he must choose his plan well.
Finally reaching the more grand hall that signaled he had chosen the right path, his eyes were quick to dart around the room, taking in every detail of his new enviroment in almost an instant and running through them quickly in his head, only bringing his eyes to the trainer ahead of him the moment she began to speak, and even then finishing several of his thoughts. Icey floor, decreased manuverability for us and increased for her. Icicles on the ceiling, possible advantage, possible hazard. Icicles rising from the ground. Too small to ac as cover. Use for in increased stability. Eliminate as required.
With a full stop put to his thoughts, there was a small delay once the gym leader ahead of him had finished before he smiled. He had researched this gym before making his trip so he knew the rules well enough, though he had done no research in the leader themseves, wanting to be surprised by what was in store. With a small hand raising and a bow of his head in respect, Mao finally spoke. "I assure you miss I am well aquianted with the rules of this gym. A double battle of 6 pokemon yes? I made sure to prepare." Raising his head from it's slight bow, his smile seemed much stronger, giving a more official bow, a flourish of his hand adding some flair before resting respectfully before his stomache. "I must say though, I had not read of such a beautiful Gym leaer commanding this icey palace. A pleasent surprise if ever there was one."
With some strangely genuine flattery out of the way, the Monferno beside Mao got a little excited, ready to tear this icey field a new one as his trainer rose to a stand again, before a quick hand seemed to halt him from the trainer himself. "My apologies Blaze, but I believe we should assess the situation before we play such an ace, don't you?" The Monferno was clearly a little frustrated that he wasn't getting to go first, but politely shuffled back, falling to his rear and swirling his tail around him, the small flame keeping him warm. Mao reached within his coat, pulling out his two first choices of the challenge.
"I believe us guests have the honor of first choice do we not?" Knowing full well he was giving himself the disadvantage, Mao threw his pokeballs out onto the field, flashes of red shining and reflecting off the ice as Mao's Firey Fletchinder Hawk took to the field along with his oddly alert Abra, both pokemon seeming ready for the challenge ahead. "I hope I can provide a significant challenge madam."
Normally, Madeline would roll her eyes at compliments to her beauty or appearance. She wasn't fond of them, mainly because they were often thrown out by random men in the streets who thought it fine to harass her in such a manner, when in truth the last thing she wanted in her life was a man. She had no time for them, and by extension, no time for their words and laughter. Still, this was presented in a much more polite manner, less a compliment and more a formality, so she laughed it off to herself, a soft little giggle as she sat on her icy throne.
She had been wrong: this Moferno was not the first Pokemon. She was already calculating, then, how she would take this to account. He said he had done some research, so how much did he know about her. A good question indeed, and something she wanted to know - she wasn't the most famous Gym Leader out there, and she hoped that her obscurity would hide some of her battling touches. Her eyes scanned over him again... still confident, still strategizing. Somewhat reminded her of herself, to be honest. The ice stalagmites and stalagtites were all in place, and the sliding of the ice floor was perfect. She hoped this initial advantage would hold, as it should. It was her Gym.
"Well, dear Challenger, I didn't earn the title of the Snow Queen of the League for nothing. I do hope we can make this interesting. Shall we let the ball begin?" She replied, almost a playful tone in her voice as she slipped her hand into her dress, pulling out two Poke Balls. She hoped that this combo would be effective to counter... Oh dear, a Fire and Flying Type? Not necessarily what she was hoping for. From what she had analyzed, she expected no less than an expertise in Type usage, but still, this was annoying. At least, she hoped, the thing wouldn't have its Hidden Ability: otherwise, Madeline was already losing. And the Abra... was interesting. But Teleport was an incredibly powerful move.
With a flick of the wrist, the Balls were off, and with a flash of light, the capsules opened, releasing Maokai, the Snover, and Sejuani, the Spheal. Both Pokemon already knew the situation - she had told them that today was "face the challengers" day, so they were already prepared for battle. Maokai seemed... dull. Not bored, but just looking at his opponents with a nonchalant look. Sejuani, however, was fierce, growling and standing her ground, ready to bring it against whatever challenge, no matter what.
The moment Maokai hit the field, however, the weather began to change. Even though the room was an enclosed area, a large ice chamber, dark clouds formed above and the temperature fell even more. Madeline seemed unbothered by the coming Hail, but then again, she had opened with Maokai for that very reason - Snow Warning was the signature of the species, after all. Snow and ice fell from the dark clouds on the ceiling, soft at first, but quickly picking up speed and force. While her Ice-Types would be fine, she knew that this was already an advantage. She expected counter-weather plays, but she was also ready for that.
"Let the dance begin! Sejuani, Aqua Ring! Maokai, Leech Seed, go!" She commanded, her royal tone once again in control. Both Pokemon performed immediately, as they had trained - Sejuani grunted, and water slid out from around her, forming, twisting, turning. It was like a bubble, a shield of water which surrounded her. The water slid around her skin, touching, twisting, seeking. The moment she would be wounded, it would act - this would elongate her period of battle, which was always a benefit. While time, the Grass-Type just aimed an arm at the Abra, and with a bare grunt, seeds shot out, roots already growing, grasping. Madeline knew there was a very low chance for the Leech Seed to connect, but the more they forced this Abra to teleport, the likelier she was to land a good hit.
"Now, attack! Spread it wide!" She announced, and both Pokemon quickly tagged next to each other, covering their flanks. One side, Maokai took, and into this side, he took a deep breath, before firing out Blizzard, the gale of wind and ice empowered and grown by the weather. On the other side, Sejuani screamed out in defiance, and from the dark clouds, rocks began to fall, Rock Slide covering and attempting to smash, filling the field with threats against their opponents. As quickly as they had begun, however, both exchanged positions, filling the Blizzard area with Rock Slide and doing the opposite for the other side.
Madeline's eyes were peeled, looking for both Pokemon - she knew that they probably were ready to dodge, what with a Flying-Type and a Teleporter, She laid comfortable in the ice-throne, but in truth, her muscles were tensed, her focus sharpened. Battle was her specialty, and she wouldn't begin showing weakness so early.
