It was the dead of night. Tobias found himself quite pleased, as he fought desperately to keep himself awake while his head rested against the window of the bus. After much determination and tireless effort, he had managed to evolve his sneasel and pawniard. He had taken his first real steps as a pokemon trainer.
He felt confident. Now, finally, he thought that he could hold his own against some of Nue’s gym leaders. Tobias sought power, and as nothing substantial had yet appeared to him on his journey, he thought that defeating all of the gyms would be his first goal.
As he teetered on the margin of consciousness, he began to consider that he would have to expand his team if he was to challenge the pokemon league. So far, he had dedicated his resources to training Edge, Nash, and Arkantos. He had captured a few pokemon, but only as a commission for sale to others. In the near future, he would have to capture more pokemon.
The bus came to a stop and Tobias jolted out of his seat as he realized that he had reached his stop. He departed from the bus, and placed his hands in his jacket pockets as it drove off. He was back in his desolate – by his standards – neighborhood. He began to walk along the sidewalk, heading home.
Tobias was exhausted. The bus stop was still a good distance from his apartment. He examined the street. The neighborhood was desolate at this time of night. He thought about Castelia City, his home. It never looked like this.
Tobias noticed a vacant lot at the end of the block. It was an oddity among the suburban homes, just a great big square patch of dirt, and spotted with some shrubs. Towards the back, he could make out an alley way, through which the other side of the street could be accessed. He realized that he could shorten his walk by cutting through. He turned from the sidewalk into the vacant lot, and walked toward the back.
He approached the alley, which was sealed off by a chain link fence. A bush, reaching up to Tobias’s waist, lay in front of it. Tobias stepped back, and then sprinted forward at the fence. He jumped, and managed to grab hold of the chain links. He began to climb, when he heard a violent rustling noise beneath him. Startled, he lost his grip. Realizing he was falling, he managed to kick himself away from the fence, and land on his feet in front of the bush.
He had disturbed something. It could only be a wild pokemon.
“Let’s see what we have here,” Tobias said to himself as he reached into his coat pocket, readying a pokeball.
