This was it.
After weeks upon weeks of chasing rumors and tracking down every single piece of information the locals were willing to give him about the mysterious orb he had obtained in the Badlands, someone up there finally took pity on him and had him find someone who gave him directions to the massive structure of red brick and gray concrete surrounded by massive red walls that he was looking at now.
There was some sort of striking majesty within this tower… some sort of ancient and electric atmosphere that had the hairs on the back of his neck rising. Yet at the same time, the sight of the majestic, elegant architecture and the beautiful state it had been preserved in took Zernebog’s breath away. The last time he felt like this, it had been during the hunt for one of Arceus’ plates back in Sinnoh two months ago with Cynthia and that had been one of the most interesting adventures in his life.
Even if this turned out to be another dead end, he would still learn a lot from the tower just by the architecture and design alone. Granted, it was a distant second to finding out what all the fuss was really about, but at least there was a silver lining in this case.
”So, the Tower of Mastery, huh…?” A grin slowly began to tug at his lips as he looked at the tower with a dangerous gleam in his eyes. ”I wonder why you were named that of all things. Maybe it has something to do with that strange stone…?”
There was only one way to find out, and that was to go right in! He was so eager to do so that he didn’t notice that there were other people around the area too….

"Yeah that seems about right..."
Yumi stepped up beside the white haired Romanov, hearing him speak about a strange stone instantly peaked her interest. She had been following a similar trail. Ever since her escapades with Gavin in the tunnels of the badlands...and all the, dare she remember...birds. She had found not only an "odd stone" much like Romanov was likely referring to, but also a band she now wore on her wrist. The odd bracelet was old, dusty, and could probably sell for a small bit at an antique brokers. What she was more interested in though were the odd looks she got from people when she wore it. She seemed to get asked a lot of questions about it, were did she get it, how long had she been "training?" One of the most interesting parts was the fact that a prevalent question was "How do you use it"? With a long line of reverse questions, she had eventually tracked this place down, though she had absolutely no idea what she could learn about the odd bracelet here.
"Hey er...no chance you're here about something like this are you?" She held up her arm, shaking it a little to show off the bracelet, hopefully getting his attention.

When Zernebog asked that rhetorical question out loud, he didn’t expect to actually get an answer. Only the medically insane expect answers from thin air.
So when he heard a female voice answer his supposedly-rhetoric question, the first thought that popped up into his mind was that maybe he really was going insane. As quickly as that thought came, he banished it. It was pure preposterousness after all; he could think of a hundred different reasons as to why someone answered him. And often, he only needed the simplest ones.
Besides, the footsteps that followed gave the answer away for the most part.
However, Zernebog didn’t actually turn around to identify and address the girl behind him until she asked him a question. Well, he assumed it was a girl… which was proven right when he did turn around and saw a busty redhead raising up her arm.
However, what caught his attention was the bracelet on her arm, which bore a stone that was exactly the same as the one that resided in his pocket. ”Yeah, pretty much.”
Zernebog grinned wryly. ”Let me guess, the locals led you here too?”
He waited for an answer before gesturing at the looming tower behind him. ”Well, since it looks like you’re going there for the same reasons as I am, want to go in there together? Safety in numbers just in case this is an elaborate hoax or something.” It sounded paranoid, but better to be safe than sorry.

Yumi gave a nod at the mention of the locals, though he sources weren't exactly the most reliable. One of the people who told her to try here was some crazy guy in rags just outside of town. Lowering her arm and rolling her sleeve back up, she gave a shakey nod, gulping back any little last minute regrets she had before walk forward, corssing the long beach trail to what was nearly a mini island that the tower resided on, looking up as it only seemed to grow bigger and bigger the close they got, swallowing down any more worry as it came, stopping outside the front gates to towers walls, giving out a nervous chuckle and gesturing for the white haired man to go first.
"Here. E-er...be a dear and open it for me would you?~ Afterall it is polite for such a nice man like yourself to hold the door open for a lady.~" She asked, cleverly trying to make sure she wasn't the first to face whatever huge joke this may turn out to be.

Zernebog raised an eyebrow at the shaky nod, but didn’t comment about it. So she had the jitters about going up the imposing tower. It was normal for people to feel that, he supposed. Well, for normal civilized people anyway. All he really felt was the excitement pumping through his veins, tempered with a bit of caution brought about by experience.
Instead he just walked forward, using quite a bit of his self control to not add a bounce to his step at the prospect of finding out and learning about something completely new. In fact, it all he could do not to smile like a maniac once they reached the front gates. Not even the girl’s comment could have brought his mood down.
”A gentleman? That’s a first. I’m usually called a thug.” He deadpanned, smirking as he glanced at her. ”I’m not a gentleman in the least, but I’m going to open it first anyway since you seem to be getting cold feet there.”
With a chuckle, Zernebog banged the knockers on the fancy gate three times before opening the door anyway. All he really did was just give them a warning that two people were going in. ”Now come on. Knowledge waits for no person, even ones with cold feet.” He chuckled as he marched into the tower without a hint of hesitation at all.

Yumi blushed, crossing her arms over her chest and giving the white haired man a small glare, feeling a tiny bit annoyed that her worry wasn't being taken seriously. She gave the tower one last glance up, looking at how high it reached and wondering what on earth was hidden inside, and what did it have to do with the weird stones she had been finding? With a small sigh she followed the other trainer inside, knowing full well they may be walking into some sort of hoax, but tried to put on a confident face. "Cold feet? Hah! As if! I just thought you might like to be kind to the beautiful lady that was accompanying you.~" She walked past him, sticking her tongue out with a smile and walking on to the inside of the tower, suddenly faced with a rather imposing sight.
"Is that a...Lucario...?"
Looking up the inside of the once imposing tower, her eyes grew wide, throughly surprised by what lay inside. Standing tall, paws by it's sides, was a statue of the pokemon Lucario...only...different. Yumi tilted her head, trying to understand what made her think it was another pokemon. It had the paws, the legs, the mouth, but there was something off. Maybe it was fluffier? Longer dreadlock things? She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but, turning back to the other trainer, she'd give an excited smile. "Okay, this is pretty cool!~"
"Ace Duo Tiffany and Al have challenged you to a battle!"
"Ah-ah-ah, not so fast." Before the imposing staircase stood a pair of figures, both young in age but confident in stance. The shorter of the two, a blonde with determined eyes, took a few steps forward before planting her fist on her hip, pointing her free hand at Zernebog and Yumi .
"You can't enter the Tower of Mastery without proving your worth, I'm afraid." She reached back behind her and pulled her hand back out, revealing a Pokeball gripped in her gloved hands. "And in the Tower of Mastery, only one thing can prove if you're capable of climbing it."
"My colleague Tiffany is correct!" The man that had been standing back moved forward, adjusting his ascot as he walked forward. Whereas Tiffany seemed confident and collected, this guy seemed cocky - cocky, but knowing full well he earned the right to be. After messing with his neck piece he reached into his own pocket and withdrew a Pokeball.
"Forgive me. I'm Al, and this lovely woman is Tiffany, and I'm afraid this is as far as you go without beating us." With that, they both tossed up their Pokeballs, and in the flashes of light two Pokemon appeared - Tiffany's orb revealed a bird on fire for but a moment before the sweeping flier swooped around, keeping a good altitude. Al's Pokeball let loose a Pokemon that landed with a thud, dropping two concrete pillars down to support its massive and muscled arms.

Zernebog smirked. While he wasn’t the best at reading social cues, he was trained to find any traces of nervousness on people, especially in missions. ”Uh huh. You keep telling yourself that.”
When he followed her inside though, the sight of the statue made him blink. There was an enormous statue of something that looked like a Lucario in build and features, but there were a lot of things that were off on it. For one thing, he’d never seen a Lucario with that many spikes or with what seemed like many more markings on it.
”…maybe they’re related or something?” Zernebog offered to Yumi’s question, still flabbergasted by the statue. ”Kinda like how Steelix and Onix were related though no one in Kanto knew that back then until the people in Johto elaborated on it.”
Zernebog then gave the girl a small smile when she turned around and said how cool it was. ”Yeah-” Only to be interrupted by a female voice from out of nowhere.
"Ah-ah-ah, not so fast." Zernebog stared at the two young people –teenagers probably- with an amused look in his eyes. As he listened, his amusement grew more and more, as did a certain familiar itch that boiled his blood. It only got worse when he saw the pokemon chosen for the first round- a Conkledurr and some fire bird that looked pretty awesome.
So that’s the way they want to play it, eh? Well, he was happy to oblige.
”So you two want me to play?” Zernebog’s smile turned sinister. ”Then I’ll play.”
Zernebog took out a pokeball from his belt and tossed it into the air, revealing the form of something large, orange, and draconian that took a loop in mid-release before settling above her trainer. ”Why don’t you warm up a little, Iris?” Zernebog remarked to the large orange dragon hovering in mid-air.
In response, Iris smiled and began to dance around her area of the battlefield, her body gaining a soft glow as she did so. Immediately, dark thunderclouds began to form above their heards, turning the interior of the tower dark and ominous until droplets of rain started to go down in soft sheets, giving the place a deceptively calming ambiance.
Zernebog let the rain wash over him, relaxing him and making him grin in satisfaction. Then he waited for the redhead to make a move… because if not then he was going to battle these two himself. No skin off his nose on his part, but a little bit more fuss than normal.

"Huh?" Yumi turned her attention from the odd statue, looking to the two trainers who suddenly appeared on the steps. Her first thought was they were about to get kicked out, and, to an extent, she was right. Apparently these two were supposed to make sure that Yumi and the white haired trainer proved their worth before they could go any further. With a cheeky grin, Yumi was more than ready for this little "test", folding her arms accross her chest as the pokemon of the ace trainers were brought forth, a conkledurr from Unova, and a bird she had yet to see herself. The trainer beside her was quick to follow up with his own pokemon, a rather impressive dragonite that made Yumi feel all the more confident in their chances.
"Well, this should be fun!" Lifting a pokeball from her belt, Yumi threw out her first choice, something she hoped would easily be able to combat the other flying pokemon of the tower. Even as it surged forth, the rain had already began to pore down in the tower, leaving her Noivern, Rodrigez, to fly into the light drizzle, giving out a draconic screech as his eyes, covered by his old style pilot goggles, to scan out the area, wondering where they were. "Alright Rodrigez! A little more confined than what you're used to, but it shouldn't be too troublesome for you!" The dragon gave out another confident screech, flying around the statue that was the center piece of the new battle field with great agility, picking his target and suddenly swooping down on the red bird that now flew beneath him, flinging out his wings and unleashing slices of air towards it.
Notes: Released Rodrigez (Noivern, wears goggles) Agility, Air slash 100%, speed + 2
"Ace Duo Tiffany and Al have challenged you to a battle!"
So, the two trainers did want to play. Al could only beam with a smug grin as he and his Conkledurr watched the two dragon-types spawn into the sky, recognizing the both of them - they did extensive study here, after all. Dragonite were known for a variety of capabilities, shown to be fast, bulky, and hard hitters among the Dragon-type; Noivern was known for speed and bursting amounts of damage. Al looked over to Tiffany, knowing full well what she was thinking and doing.
Al may have been the confident one, but Tiffany was his secret weapon. The damn girl was a walking, talking history book - she knew all the known moves a Pokemon could know as long as she had read about it before, and covered both of these guys. "Al, I'm going to increase our speed to match theirs. Ground them, please." She kept it simply and curt as the rain began to fall in full measure, leaving her to brush a bit of her hair out of her face. They both spoke at once, voices practically in unison. "Tailwind, Bulk Up, attack!"
As the Noivern sped around the central statue, Talonflame let loose a rushing gust of wind with a single flap, creating an odd change in the wind from the ongoing mini-storm - it seemed to favor a steady updraft on their side, now, as Conkeldurr slammed his concrete pillars down and grunted, focusing energy throughout his body. The Noivern let loose the Air Slash but caught nothing but air as the Talonflame zoomed forth, feathers blazing and growing, sizzling against the rain as the Talonflame pulled into a loop to tackle the bat with a Flame Charge.
While this was happening, Conkledurr squinted at the Dragonite and, having taken measure, lifted a concrete slab onto his shoulder, took a hopping step forth and spun once, twice... on the third time he put all of his force into chucking the concrete slab like an olympic discus athlete, aiming to peck the dragon right out of the sky. It was no warning shot; they weren't here to play games.
They were here to win.

Zernebog glanced at his partner for the day, his eyes alighting with interest as they looked at the fierce, bat-like dragon that she had summoned for the battle. However, just as quickly as the light in his eyes came, it faded away and was replaced with its usual mischievous gleam as they started to watch his two opponents again.
Upon hearing the commands they gave their pokemon –in unison, which Zernebog didn’t really get the point of, he smirked. Watching those movies that the one ranch’s cashier had recommended to him was now going to pay off. ”How about a little razzle dazzle, Iris?”
Iris had stopped dancing and was simply observing everything with a calm countenance around the time the strange bat-like dragon was released. When she heard her trainer’s command and saw what the strange ugly hulk of a clown was doing, she started doing a beautiful, majestic dance in the air, spinning and swooping around like a real bird. It looked almost enchanting in the drizzle, making it seem like her body was shimmering if one would look at it in the right way. Because of her dancing, she was able to easily avoid the massive pillar that was thrown her way by dancing away from it.
With a soft huff, she finished her dance routine by striking a pose, thowing her head up and pointing to the sky. Immediately, an enormous bolt of lightning descended from the rainclouds on the ceiling, directed right towards the Conkledurr at speeds associated with regular, natural lightning bolts from true thunderstorms. Flashy and beautiful indeed.

Well these two were certainly no pushovers. In an instant the tables had been turned on what felt like a really good start became Yumi and her tag team partner getting pinned by the bird and the conkledurr. Glancing to her side, the owner of the dragonite seemed to be handing this pretty well, and as the clouds above sparked with the power of a thunder attack, Yumi got a small idea, turning her attention back to her own battle and the burning avian that was hurtling towards Rodrigez.
"Rodrigez! Agility! Wild charge through the thunder!"
The command was confusing to the dragon at first, but as it heard the sparking above, a small grin formed on his maw. With a hard flap of it's wings, it avoided the flaming bird, the scorching of it's body barely tickling it's scales as he flew higher into the tower and vanishing into the dark clouds above, taking in the remaining charge from the thunder of the dragonite and super charging his own body, before dive bombing back down into fire bird beneath it, using it's enhanced speed, gravity, stream lined form and charged body to hopefully deal one hell of a blow.
Notes: HP 90% (slight damage from entering the storm clouds) SPD+4 Agility, entered thunder clouds, super charged wild charge on talonflame
"Ace Duo Tiffany and Al have challenged you to a battle!"
Tiffany squinted at the Dragonite, watching the way it moved. It wasn't just using erratic patterns to dodge. "Al, it's using Dragon Dance - be wary. Our Tailwind might not be enough." Al merely widened his grin, eyes darting back over to the two opposing trainers. Seemed like the whitebeard wannabe wanted to keep everyone on their toes and make this a fight for speed. He could shut that down and move the battle onto a more exiting portion. Tiffany, however, had her eyes to the skies - watching as her Talonflame narrowly missed, leaving the enemy fliers to move about and summon up a storm.
If they wanted to drop the thunder and bring down the lightning, that was fine by the duo. The Thunder attack came down and struck at the Fighting-type, with the bulky Pokmon bringing up his concrete slab to mitigate as much of the damage as possible - the splashback of energy still smarted, but he avoided the brunt of it. "Alright Conkledurr, get his attention!" The Conkledurr used his now-free hand to beckon at the Dragonite, a wide grin on his face. The Taunt attack should prevent it from doing its fancy dance and more before the Pokemon used his other hand to rear back and fire forth, launching himself with a mighty amount of speed across the tower, going in and catching his concrete slab from before, using his momentum and new vantage point to fire it right back at the scaly dragon that tried to shock him from before.
Tiffany, on the hand, was dealing with the odd bit of aerial warfare. Why did the Noivern retreat to the skies...? "Talonflame, prep for reversal!" The bird squawked out, readying one of its clever moves before the electrified bat flew down - perfect. The Talonflame pulled up to meet the charge, glowing with a white aura for a moment before adopting a static coat similar to the Noivern's - this one had a hell of a lot more spark, though, and the Talonflame aimed to smash right into the Noivern to launch its attack right back at it at increased power, with the impact resulting in a thunderous noise and a blastback of Talonflame, sending it to fall for a moment before righting itself and swiftly flying around the tower to climb lower to the ground to recover.

Iris had always been teased and taunted by some of Zernebog’s other pokemon. In fact, it was a favorite hobby of Hermes, Proteus, Ares, and even Erebus despite her father’s best efforts to shield her from it. By all respects, she should be immune to it by now since she’s spent all of her life with them in her trainer’s and her father’s company. Her species helps with the patience, but she’s still young and temperamental even by her father’s standards.
That was why she couldn’t help but give the Conkledurr a venomous glare when it started taunting her. If she could actually emit lasers from her eyes, then he would’ve already been ashes from the sheer intensity. As if she wasn’t already offended by the fact that the stupid trainer called her a he!
On the ground, even though Zernebog’s vision was obscured by the rain he knew that his Dragonite was angry now. Too angry to use anything other than attacks. An unfortunate set back, but one he could work with.
So instead of working to calm her, he was going to work with her anger. ”Iris! Rip it to shreds!”
Iris would have charged at it and done just that, only for it to fling itself across the tower and catch its concrete pillar. It then had the audacity to actually throw the pillar back at her, causing her to snort. In response, she coated her tail with water and smashed her tail onto the pillar with an enormous amount of force that turned the concrete pillar to powder on impact.
Iris’ antennae then sparked with electricity as she glared at the offending Conkledurr again before sending off another massive lightning bolt from the thunderclouds onto the Conkledurr’s head, intending to punish it by doing what it had goaded her to do.
Be careful of what you wish for, indeed.

Rodrigez was quick to notice the flash of light that enveloped the red bird's body as it mimicked his move, but with his own body already surging with charge he had no fear of diving right into the fray. With a tenacious grin her flapped his wings harder, taking the impact of the powered up wild charge and slamming into the bird full force. While it had the boost granted by "me first", rodrigez had the boost of his own attack being super effective, hopefully dealing the greater of the two impacts.
"Alright! Now, gain some distance!"
With a quiet screech the pokemon was quick to comply, using the thick rain to hide the noise of his flight as he took to the skies again, flying through the clouds in the hope of getting the odd bird off it's tail. In the dark mists swirling above his body would charge again, electrical charges swirling around his wings and torso before diving once more into the battle, hopefully using his enhanced speed and cloud cover to get in without a scratch this time.
Note: HP: 75% (recoil + attack vs attack) Using wild charge again.
