tanding in front of the Rustboro City Gym was a blonde haired, seventeen year old, attractive male trainer, and he had no idea what he was doing. What was he supposed to do? Just waltz in there and ask the gym leader for a battle? Speaking of battles, how many had Jason had? Two? Three, maybe? Jason groaned and hit his forehead on the door. Why was he doing this to himself? He had the cutie, Will, waiting for him at his, their, camp. Jason had told him he was going to battle the Gym leader, and Will, being as cute as can be, wished him luck and told him he would do fine. Sure, Jason, had battled wild pokemon a lot more than he had people, and his pokemon had grown in strength, thinking of Chip, size as well, but was he really ready for this?
He would not get to find out. The metal doors slid open and Jason fell through, barely managing to catch himself and save his pride. He looked up at the receptionist, his face glowing red like a Charmander's tail flame. Not wanting to look any more a fool, he got up and clapped his hands together, trying to get the dust off and approached her desk. Jason leaned over and gave her a dazzling smile, one that could give the move Flash a run for its money, and asked, "Hey babe, where's the gym leader?" She rolled her eyes, but smiled, and returned her attention to the screen. Maybe one of his killer pick up lines would get her to assist her, so he began, "Did you see me fall there? It was me falli-"
The young receptionist sighed loudly, interrupting him, and muttered, "Pass the door with the Pokemon League symbol. Don't do anything stupid, she'll rock your world." ... What. He knew she was a rock type specialist and had the necessary pokemon to deal with it, the sassy receptionist didn't have to be so rude. Whatever. Jason gave her a fake smile and walked towards the door she specified and was a little shocked when the doors slid open and revealed a rocky, mountain like field. "Well, here goes nothing.." Jason mumbled to no one in particular and stepped through.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
"Ms. Roxanne? There's a trainer here to challenge the gym."
Slim fingers gently caressed the page, running over the letters with a practiced care before abruptly stopping at the sound of a female voice. Red eyes flickered over towards the intercom. "Did you remember to tell him to go to the battle area, Marie?"
"Yes, ma'am." Pale pink lips curved into a faint smile. Perfect.
"Very well, I will be there in ten." Those same lips pursed as she snapped the book closed and stood up from her comfortable chair. It would figure that even during the holiday break, some foolhardy trainer would dare to challenge her. Truly, there was no rest for the wicked, or so the books say.
She picked up a couple of papers from her desk, along with a couple of newly-sharpened pencils and new erasers. Once she was sure that they were correct papers -because clearly, such a faux pas would be shameful- she smiled to herself and briskly walked out of the door.
It didn't take her long to arrive at the battle area after making a quick stop at the testing area to set up the exam in case this trainer hadn't taken the required prerequisite exam before battling her. It happened more often than not, so often in fact that she had taken to constructing a room just for that examination within the confines of the gym.
"Hello, challenger. I am Roxanne, the gym leader." She raised her eyebrow at the cute blond, but remarked nothing about his looks. "You are here to fight me, are you not?"
She didn't let the trainer speak up before continuing. "Have you taken the prerequisite test that all trainers must take before facing me?"

ow she was a beauty. The moment the gym leader walked into the field, she owned the area. Jason couldn't help but stare at her perfectly formed lips, shiny, glossy, and pink. Probably soft and delicate, tasting of.. cherries? Strawberries? One of those sweet tasting berries that is used to flavor lip gloss. That was something Jason would miss if, no when, Will and him became a couple. The smooth luscious lips of a woman. "Hello, challenger. I am Roxanne, the gym leader." A few seconds was all the time Jason had to watch her before she added, "You are here to fight me, are you not?"
Thinking of a response, Jason was readying a pick up line when Roxanne quickly said, "Have you taken the prerequisite test that all trainers must take before facing me?" What did she just say? Something about an exam? A test? That was something Jason had not been expecting. He knew that she worked at the Pokemon Academy as a teacher or professor or whatever, and had been the top of her class when she graduated, but why did she have to bring it into her gym?! A gym is a place of action and battles, a place to test a trainer's knowledge of his own pokemon and of his opponents, a test o- Oh... That's why she was doing this.
"Errr, no, I have not taken the test you're talking about." Jason said bashfully. He was worried, very worried, because Jason's time in school had never been the best when it came to exams. He began to doubt himself and became very anxious, shaking and tapping his foot on the floor.. More or less becoming a nervous wreck. Perhaps this test wouldn't be too hard? Maybe Jason's charm would get him through it? Hoping so, Jason added, "I'm sure it's well written and extremely taxing in the appropriate way, Miss Roxanne." A wink came along with his compliment to Roxanne.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
Roxanne pursed her lips. Of course he hadn't. Most outsiders either never cared to know her exacting requirements for a battle or had the audacity to think that using their charms on her will enable them to get a free pass on their test like she was some common airheaded bimbo.
Speaking of that, this blond was also trying the same tactic that many had before. And like those many, they will fail miserably. After all, she was a teacher. Students tried this tactic all the time. It was almost as old as the a Growlithe ate my homework excuse that the younger ones seem to love using.
"Of course." She remarked dryly as she raised an eyebrow again. "I made it."
Without waiting for further input, she turned around. "Follow me to the testing area, challenger." She didn't wait for his answer before trotting off, posture straight and head held high.
It only took a few minutes to reach the testing room, which was in the back of the gym. Roxanne stood a bit ways to the side from the room's door and gestured towards it. "Beyond this door is your test, challenger. A proctor will be there to supervise and make sure you do not cheat."
She leveled a warning gaze at him. "Do keep note that if the proctor catches you cheating, you will be immediately disqualified and be rendered unable to retake my gym challenge for a month. I do not tolerate cheaters, is that understood?"
omeone woke up on the wrong side of the mountain, and she seemed like such a cute girl. Whatever. If she didn't want to take his compliments and charm like everyone else, she can deal with Jason as a trainer. He followed her through her Gym after she rejected his suave and seductive words, instead walking silently and as noble as a Queen before her loyal subjects. Even though she had denied Jason access to her hidden deposits, she was still a sight to behold. Noble and beautiful.
A few more silent minutes passed, the only sound being their shoes hitting the floor of the Gym. Eventually, the two made their way to another door, this one being opaque. Roxanne turned on her heels and said to Jason, quite stern about it, "Beyond this door is your test, challenger. A proctor will be there to supervise and make sure you do not cheat." That hurt, just a little bit. She didn't trust him! But who could blame her, really? An attractive looking person, such as Jason, waltz into her gym and ignores her test. And said attractive looking person is also a blonde. Jason was about to make a comment about her being racists towards blondes, but she continued, looking straight into his eyes, "Do keep note that if the proctor catches you cheating, you will be immediately disqualified and be rendered unable to retake my gym challenge for a month. I do not tolerate cheaters, is that understood?"
She has pretty eyes. Not as pretty as Jason's, and definitely not as nice as Will's golden beauties, but still pretty. Jason gave her a wink, before saying, "Crystal clear, my mountain beauty." He then swiftly made his way into the testing area, unsure of how she would react to his flirting.

Of course the challenger still insisted on his inane flirting. This time, Roxanne didn't even bother dignifying the comment with a response and simply walked off, not even bothering to look if the challenger went inside. She'll deal with him if he proved worthy of her time.
Inside, a brown haired middle-aged man in a blue business suit was sitting behind a large desk. His head was plopped onto his hand while both elbows were propped onto the table. Upon seeing the younger guy come in, he sighed.
"Let me guess, you're gonna take the exam right kid?" He gave him a rueful grin. "Go sit down at the table with the papers and writing implements. You have five minutes to read over the instructions before we begin, since I'm not going to be saying them out loud for you. You're not a toddler, so I won't bother."
He then raised an eyebrow. "This is also your last chance to back out if you think you aren't ready for this exam. Remember that if you take this exam and fail, you won't be able to retake it for at least a week." He grinned again. "So you ready for this?"

ason entered the room and was not pleased by what he saw. A middle aged looking man, too old for Jason's taste, sat behind a bland looking desk in even more bland looking clothes. The man was apparently as displeased as Jason, because he let out a sigh that would have matched Jason had he had the chance to sigh. The brown haired man, after he sighed, got up and showed Jason a desk and began to recite instructions that Jason was sure he had done hundred of times. Jason nodded and grunted, proof he was listening. All he wanted to do was take the damned test and battle Roxanne. Was that really too much to ask for?
The proctor then raised an eyebrow. "This is also your last chance to back out if you think you aren't ready for this exam. Remember that if you take this exam and fail, you won't be able to retake it for at least a week." He grinned again. "So you ready for this?" Of course he was ready! Why else had he gone through the trouble of being at the gym?! Clearly irritated, Jason said, "Yes, yes! Give me the test already!"

"Very well." The proctor leaned back with a smirk. "You may open your booklet and begin the test. You have a maximum of three hours to complete this exam. Good luck and Godspeed."
Please read the instructions before beginning this examination. If they are not followed then 5 points will be deducted from this exam. Each question is worth 2 points each.
1. Give three examples of moves that induce the POISON status. 2. True or False: Fire pokemon cannot be inflicted with the BURN status. 3. Give the mechanisms by which Eevee evolves into Umbreon and Espeon. Be specific. 4. List down the elemental evolution stones and pair each one with an example pokemon that evolves using it. Place forms before and after evolution. 5. What is STAB and give an example of its application, complete with computations. 6. Would Focus Punch be effective on a Banette? Why or why not? If not, give a move which will be more effective on the Banette. 7. Which move would allow you to melt into shadows as well as attack using them? 8. Given the typing neutralities, resistances, and weaknesses on electric types, which move and/or ability would be best on them to optimize the typing (read: make them better)? 9. In which part of the Hoenn Region would you be able to find a Nosepass? Give the method of encountering one. 10. What type is always associated with fossils and why?

e watched as the proctor leaned back in chair and smirk at him. Apparently he was getting a kick out of watching Jason suffer. The man then said, "Very well. You may open your booklet and begin the test. You have a maximum of three hours to complete this exam. Good luck and Godspeed." A bit melodramatic for Jason's taste, he opened the booklet anyway, and quickly read the first question.
1. Give three examples of moves that induce the POISON status.
Well that seemed simple enough! Roxanne had claimed that this would be a challenging test, as had the proctor, yet the first question was something he had learned as young child! Jason wrote some common moves that inflicted a Pokemon, or person, with poisoning.
Toxic, Poison Sting, and Poison Jab.
Nodding at his answer, Jason read the next question.
2. True or False: Fire pokemon cannot be inflicted with the BURN status.
"Shit." he muttered under his breath. Jason wasn't a huge fan of fire types and had not really been around many of them. However, he knew that many of them lived in the depths of the earth or where lava could be found, which means they aren't burned by it. That means they cant' be burned by other Pokemon, right?
True.
Jason marked his answer, uneasy that he hadn't known it off the top of his head. He flipped the page to read the next question, unsure of how easy or hard it would be.
3. Give the mechanisms by which Eevee evolves into Umbreon and Espeon. Be specific.
Well, it seemed the test was getting increasingly harder as he progressed. Jason's father had owned both an Umbreon and an Espeon; both of which disliked Jason and were incredibly loyal to his father. The only things he could remember was that the Espeon enjoyed the day much more than the Umbreon and was often found sunbathing, while the Umbreon seemed to be nocturnal and was usually prowling the grounds of the ranch, stopping occasionally to stare at the moon in silence. Guessing, Jason hesitantly wrote his answer..
An Eevee will evolve into an Espeon during the daytime when it has developed some sort of connection with its Trainer, likewise, an Umbreon will evolve during the night under the same conditions.
Jason shrugged as he read his answer, unsure if it was correct, and then read the next question.
4. List down the elemental evolution stones and pair each one with an example pokemon that evolves using it. Place forms before and after evolution.
... What? Jason sighed and began writing the answer, which would probably be long and wrong.
Water Stone Lombre --> Ludicolo Leaf Stone Nuzleaf --> Shiftry Fire Stone Vulpix --> Ninetales Thunder Stone Pikachu --> Raichu
Turning the page, after what seemed like an eternity, Jason read the next question.
5. What is STAB and give an example of its application, complete with computations.
"What the hell is a computation?!" Jason thought as he finished reading the question. He knew what a STAB move was and could provide an example, but what was a computation..
A STAB move is a move that a Pokemon knows that is the same type it is, and it is one and a half times more powerful! An example of a STAB move would be a Ralts using Psychic.
The answer seemed suffice, or at least it was for Jason, and he turned the page to the next question.
6. Would Focus Punch be effective on a Banette? Why or why not? If not, give a move which will be more effective on the Banette.
Now they were getting to the questions he could answer confidentally; ghost type questions! Jason quickly wrote his answer and turned to the next question.
No, because ghost are immune to fighting type moves. Shadow Ball would be much more effective.
7. Which move would allow you to melt into shadows as well as attack using them?
Another "gimmie" question! Jason grinned and turned the page.
Shadow Sneak.
8. Given the typing neutralities, resistances, and weaknesses on electric types, which move and/or ability would be best on them to optimize the typing (read: make them better)?
Annnnnnnnd, back to the longer questions. This one wasn't too hard, though, since Jason had an electric type on his team.
Levitate would be a prime ability on any electric type because it cancels ground type moves; An electric types only weakness.
9. In which part of the Hoenn Region would you be able to find a Nosepass? Give the method of encountering one.
Well, this one was tricky. Jason knew where they were, but not how one encountered them..
Nosepass are located in Granite Cave and to encounter one, a trainer must.. Bring magnets.
And the final questions was......
10. What type is always associated with fossils and why?
Ok. Really?
Rock type, because all fossils are found in and preserved by rocks.
Stretching, Jason looked up to the clock and smiled. He had 45 minutes left over. He closed the test and snapped his fingers, signaling for the proctor to get his test.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
While the young blond man was answering the exam, the proctor was surreptitiously dividing his attention between watching him and reading Without Seeing the Dawn out of complete boredom. He wasn't going to spend three hours watching some snot-nosed kid flail a test. He'd seen that so many times at the academy that any semblance of entertainment that he might have gotten from their suffering still bored him.
Despite the fact that it was only a short test, the kid seemed to need over two hours to finish before he finally called his attention. Well, at least he wasn't one of those people who needed an extension with the exam. Thank Rayquaza. Besides, he got through a quarter of the novel he was reading, so it was all good.
"Finally done?" The man grinned as he closed the book he was reading and quietly slid it back into the desk slot. "Good. I'll be grading it right here and now. I know how you young people are always in such a rush these days."
With that said, the older man stood up from his seat and walked over to the blond's desk. He then took the paper with a whistle and went back to his seat. Once he was seated, he donned his glasses and then pulled out a red pen and began checking the paper.
1. 1 pt 2. 1pt 3. Term is maximized bond/friendship - 0.5 pt 4. Missing 5 stones and examples - 0.4 pt 5. No computations - 0.4 pt 6. 1 pt 7. 1 pt 8. 1 pt 9. Method is breaking rocks with Rock Smash - 0.5 pt 10. 1 pt
TOTAL SCORE: 7.8/10
"Hm...." The proctor adjusted his glasses and tapped his pen on the paper as he finished grading it. "It seems that you passed, kiddo."
He lifted the paper up. "Now go take this to Roxanne so that you can have your gym battle. I'm sure you're itching to have a fight now."
he proctor had seemed glad that Jason had finally finished and was quite sassy about the whole situation. Jason rolled his eyes when the older man turned his back to grade the test, clearly annoyed. So what if he was a bad test taker and took a long time.. He got it done, didn't he? It's not like Jason even received any proper teaching on Pokemon; all he knew he learned from his caretaker, watching his father work, or the glorious invention of the internet. Even in high school, Jason had trouble in class. Math had too many numbers, science was basically a worded down version of math, and history and literature had too many terms to memorize. School and test were not Jason's strong points.
After a few minutes, the proctor said, "It seems that you passed, kiddo." He lifted the paper up that was Jason's test and continued, "Now go take this to Roxanne so that you can have your gym battle. I'm sure you're itching to have a fight now." And he was right! Jason nearly fell out of his chair as he got up to get his pass to battle. No more of this pen and paper business! Grinning like the fool he was, Jason left the testing area and headed towards the battled field that he had seen earlier.

The receptionist could only watch with half-lidded eyes as the blond boy from earlier blew past her with a paper in hand. Well, he wasn't sulking or throwing a tantrum so she guessed that he passed the test and was going to challenge Roxanne now.
With a soft chuckle, she pressed a button on her desk. "Ms. Roxanne? The blond challenger from earlier is approaching the battlefield."
There was silence on the other end for a few moments before it crackled to life."...Alright. I will meet him there. Thank you for informing me, Marie."
"No problem, Ms. Roxanne." The receptionist adjusted her glasses. "Good luck with the challenge."
"Of course. Thank you, Marie."
The receptionist smiled. "You're welcome, Ms. Roxanne." With that, she turned off the intercom.
Roxanne pulled out a bookmark and placed it in-between the pages she was reading before snapping it shut. She then placed it on her desk, pushed herself away from it, and then stood up from her seat. She wasn't in any particular hurry to answer the challenge, but timeliness was always a thing with her so she made her way out of the door with the same pace she did a few hours earlier.
Since her office was actually very close to the battlefield, it only took her only a minute to arrive on the battlefield at her usual brisk pace. Surprisingly, she seemed to have arrived earlier than the challenger, which meant that she would have to wait a little bit until he arrived.
Once he did though, words were already going out of her mouth. "Welcome back, challenger. Your test results, please?"

H
e had been in such a rush to battle that Jason had passed the battlefield. It had taken him a few minutes to realize his mistake and by then Jason was deep inside the Gym. "Shit." he said aloud, not caring that it looked bad; well, it would look bad if anyone was around to hear him. Jason took a moment to recollect himself and attempted to remember the route he had taken to get to his current position. After a couple minutes of intense concentration and annoyance with himself, Jason finally made his way back to the entrance of the battlefield.
Standing in the center, looking as beautiful as ever, was the Gym Leader Roxanne. She truly was a sight for sore eyes and brought a smile to his face; however, before he could give her one of his genius pickup lines, she said rather blandly, "Welcome back, challenger. Your test results, please?"f Jason flashed her a grin and said, "Of course, my rocky beauty." He then handed her his test, which he had barely passed.

If Roxanne wasn't used to the inane and pointless flirting and had a godly amount of self-control from having to deal with little children day in and day out, then she might have actually ripped this poor guy a new one. All he was doing was annoying her even more.
Instead, she kept quiet as he she took the paper and began to scan through it with the practiced eye of a teacher. Right. He really did pass... if only barely by the skin of his teeth. Looks like she had no choice but to battle him after all.
"...So you did." She muttered dryly as she returned the test papers back to the blond man. "Then take your position on the other side of the field. This is a best two out of three battle. As the challenger, you get to release your pokemon first. Do you understand the instructions?"
She waited for his answer before turning around. "Good. Now, prepare yourself for a battle." With that said, she marched on her side of the field and waited for Jason to release his pokemon first.

T
he clearly annoyed Gym Leader took Jason's test papers and began analyzing them. He was so close to finally battling, finally ridding himself of these test. Test of his knowledge and, more importantly, a test of his patience. Jason flexed his muscles while Roxanne looked over his test, more out of a nervous habit than to impress the stone hearted woman. There was always the chance that she could outright deny him the challenge. People with power were prone to doing weird and crazy things.. "... So you did." Roxanne muttered, shaking Jason from his thoughts. She shoved his test papers into his chest and said, without skipping a beat, "Then take your position on the other side of the field. This is a best two out of three battle. As the challenger, you get to release your pokemon first. Do you understand the instructions?" Of course he understood, he wasn't an idiot.. Then it hit him, she was stereotyping him as a typical blonde! The nerve of some people, especially a Gym Leader! He expected more from a leader of a community...
Not feeling like responding to her, Jason simply nodded. Roxanne noted his nod and said, "Good. Now, prepare yourself for a battle." She then walked to the other side of the field and waited for him to do the same. "Hmph!" was all Jason said in reply. Prepare for battle, ha! If she wanted to stereotype him, so be it, but she would have to deal with his fury in battle! Taking his place on the field, Jason pulled out a pokeball that he recognized and tossed it in the air, revealing Sebastian, his Duskull, in a flash of white light. "Duskdus.." the Ghost pokemon whispered.
