Now that she’d finally gotten around to doing such, she then decided to test out the theories that Claire had taught her. Admittedly, it wasn’t much, but seeing as she was already here in Unova, then why not get started in this region’s Gym Circuit? She crossed her fingers and hoped for the best as she located the Striaton Gym and then heaved open the doors. She was expecting a place full of trainers, but instead… it looked quite like a café; but there was an open space in the middle, large enough to host a Pokemon Battle or two. Taking a deep breath and calming herself, she then strode inside, hoping that somewhere, she wouldn’t give way and eventually freak the hell out for jumping the gun and challenging Gyms so soon. And besides, everything has an order… I must seek to follow that order… she thought, quickly noting down that eventually, she’d have to go back to Hoenn and face the Gym Circuit there… with a fresh batch of recruits!
She then looked around, seeing if the Gym Leader… or was it Gym Leaders—she wasn’t that sure—were around, and then strode to the open space and took up her position on the right-hand side of the entire thing. She then held her breath, and began breathing in and out, hoping that somehow, somewhere, her presence would be sensed and that the Gym Leader would make their inevitable appearance… she then decided to speak up, “Hello? Is there anyone here? I’m Izumi, and I would like to challenge this gym for your badge,” she said in one go, hoping that it didn’t sound incredibly stupid or non-sensical. Calm down, Zumi. Calm the hell down. It’s nothing to be afraid of… she thought, breathing deeply to calm her nervousness.
The young woman at their door wouldn't have to wait long. There was soon a clatter of footsteps, quiet yet swift, and from the right side of the gym's sidelines an individual approached Izumi. With a bow and a flourish, he straightened up and presented a grandiose smile - one that lived and breathed respect and patience. "Welcome to the Striaton Gym!" A cheery tone was every present in his words as the green haired man gave off a smile. They treated every challenger like a prized customer, after all... but they couldn't rush into things. Not here in the Striaton Gym.
"My dear lady, I am Cilan. I understand you're here for a gym challenge - perhaps, of course, we can offer you a fresh tea before you begin?" As Cilan spoke, he reached a hand up from behind his back where his arms had been folded and snapped a finger. Two other figures approached - with red and blue hair, respectively. The flaming headed Chili had both hands on his hips as the reserved looking Cress folded his in front of him, all three dressed to the nines as fanciful waiters. "These are my brothers, Chili and Cress." Each nodded in turn at their introduction.
"Now, if you do intend to challenge the Striaton Gym, we do have a policy on all of our challengers having to pass the tests of the gym. Is that acceptable?"

She continued to look around in confusion, just wondering where everyone was—when she heard a voice speak from somewhere near her.—to be specific, it was headed towards her; and a smile crinkled her lips—for he’d given a bow before introducing himself! Her eagerness turned to confusion—what the heck was going on—when two more individuals appeared; each of them had hair colors that stood out, and turning to the one who called himself Cilan, she then looked at him in confusion—even if the three were all dressed in matching outfits. “Tea before a match? Well that’s a first,” she began before eventually going into a bow that rivaled his as well, “If it’s part of what the Gym’s all about, then go ahead and why not?” she continued; which meant to say that she agreed to the first part of the terms.
As for the second half of what she heard …
Test? What test? I thought… okay that’s weird… went through her mind before she gathered her thoughts. Taking another deep breath, she then continued, “If that’s how the Gym’s set up, then I’ll go along with these terms—as long as the battle’s fair and square. Lead the way,” she ended, making sure to carefully observe just what was going on. This Gym has some weird traditions—unlike everywhere else that just jumps straight into the battle… you have to go through some sort of test. Eh, whatever, I can deal with it… she thought to herself as she waited for further instructions from the three—they looked alike; so she was guessing they were triplets, or something similar to those lines…
Ah, excellence! Her return bow was in perfect form, and she agreed to tea! Cilan and his brothers all nodded at each other in unison before they all snapped together, and from the door on the right there was another source of noise - this one of the chinking of fine china and a door. Three elemental simians appeared, with the Simisage carrying an ornate tea pot, the Simipour carrying a large tea cup, and the Simisear trundled behind with a clothe over his arm. They immediately seemed to get to work before them all - the Simisage took some choice leaves from his own head and added them into the pot as Simipour poured some water within, and then Simisear heated it all up in short time but at an excellent tempurature. The three Pokemon poured Izumi a cup and offered it to her graciously as the triplets stood by.
Izumi should find that that tea blend would be among the best ever made - perhaps even the best she had ever tried! After awaiting her reaction, the trio indicated for her to follow them and the pokemon over into the left of the gym, where they pushed wide a set of double doors - Cress and Chili held them open as Cilan led her in.
"For this gym challenge, you are to choose one of your Pokemon and complete the course ahead of you. Three course for you and your ally to get through, and then you shall get to challenge the gym leader." The other two brothers had bowed and left the room at this - Cilan gestured behind him, to a large curtain embroidered in gold and designed in green with a leaf pattern. Before it lay three panels to stand on - one enlaided with a red flame, one with a blue teardrop, the other a green leaf. "The theme of this gym is match theory and type advantages, dear miss. Prove you have the know-how to get through these three curtains with your Pokemon ally."
Cilan awaited eagerly, his eyes watching Izumi to see both her choice and how she'd get past this curtain. Behind it lay two more areas with the same scheme - the second curtain was one of a red flame, and the third was as blue as the ocean.

She then watched the little procession come up to her and then began serving her tea—the three simians that were, quite interestingly, the same color as their hair had come up and served the best tea she’d ever tasted… even better than the couple’s matcha tea back home! She thought with a grin, taking a moment to relish the flavor of tea that was steeped in nothing but the freshest water. Inhaling the aroma, she then continued to sip from it as she listened to the stipulations of the challenge, and then nodded—it was something relatively easy; which was type match-ups. Of course. Something so basic from them, yet fundamental all at the same time… she thought to herself as she downed the rest of the contents of the cup and then placed it on one of the little side tables; before the rules of how to get ahead were explained to her.
She then nodded, and watched as she was now just left with Cilan (the green-haired one) who was waiting for her to make her choice—and then she had it. Even if she didn’t have Fire yet, she had the next-best thing that could deal with it… and in a flash of red light, her Rufflet, nicknamed Sora, appeared beside her and was ready and pretty much raring to go. “Rufflet! Ruff?” it asked her, looking at her in general confusion, before she crouched down and said, “Well, come on and follow me, okay? Try to keep up,” she added with a grin, giving his lone prominent headdress-like feather a good tickling, and she heard it squawk with glee. She then grinned, and knew just what could beat this—she then looked at the floor, and then made her way over to the red spot, which was inlaid with a flame-shaped pattern and seemingly inlaid with gold.
“This is my choice,” she began, before quickly explaining—“Even if I don’t have Fire, I have Flying… and that can easily take care of the Grass-types that I’ve encountered in my journey so far,” she ended, waiting and hoping that her choice was right—she knew that it was, but she just wanted to be absolutely sure about it.
Cilan watched with heightened interest as Izumi made her choice for the first curtain quiz - a Rufflet! A Flying-type did indeed have an advantage over Grass-types, although they had no special advantages over Fire- or Water-types. He kept this mental note as they stepped onto the fire panel, initiating a correct choice. Cilan greeted her with a smile. "Correct. The first pick was indeed the right one!" With that, Cilan reached over and pulled the curtain aside using a small switch, watching it automatically swish away as Cilan himself stepped forward to the next area.
In just a few steps, one would reach the next area of curtains with identical panels - this curtain set, however, was that of the Fire-type, being red with flames embroidering it. Cilan went over to beside the three-step staircase, hands behind his back, patiently awaiting the next choice the challenger would make. "The second quiz, same as the first. What will you pick this time?" A single eyebrow raised in curiosity, eager to see what Izumi had in store. Even if she didn't have something super-effective against the type, type neutrality would work... well, he'd just have to wait and see.
OOC NOTE:: Feel free to do this curtain + the third one in your post, if you wanna skip some time~

So do I have to bring out another ‘mon in order to get past this area? She thought as she walked through the first stage; and saw that she was now facing a similar set-up—only this time though it was blocked by a curtain that was decorated with the same Fire-type design she’d seen on the floor panel she chose earlier; she immediately knew what the answer was. “So do I have to bring all of them out…?” she wondered more to herself as she quickly reached for a Pokeball that had a penguin sticker slapped on it, and in another flash of red light, her Piplup, Nixe, appeared. “Pip. Piplup, pip?!” she heard it chirp, before looking around and seeing that there was nothing to fight—it quickly proceeded to peck at her sneakers! “Piplup, piplup, piiii!” she heard it continue, while it was attempting to peck her toes off as she walked forward and settled herself on the design that had a teardrop on it—the Water ‘sigil’ (as she called it).
“Well of course… Fire can be put out by Water here,” she began, emphasizing her Piplup—which was still trying to yank her shoelaces at that point—“because nothing else is more effective than Water when putting out a fire. You could also smack it with a Ground-type move for extra damage as well,” she added, and watched as the curtain parted; apparently (and obviously) her answer was correct! Now that the next part of the gym was revealed, she was now in a bit of a tizzy, because where the hell was she going to get something that could trump Water?! Aw crap, my type matchups are all messed up… she thought as she whistled—Sora and Nixe followed after her, as she relocated to stand on the floor tile that had the leaf-shaped pattern embossed in it.
“Even if I have several Electric types… I choose Grass!” she said, quickly digging out another Pokeball—and this time, bringing out… her Deino, Riku. “To be honest, I don’t have a Grass-type on me at the moment; but I know that the Dragon-type can stand up to… let’s see… Fire, Water, Grass, Electric—and not take as much damage as it would from an Ice-type,” she said by way of explanation. Now that she’d gotten to this point; what would happen next? She then looked over to Cilan for answers; and she was secretly dreading the feeling of having to challenge all three at the same time—because she was only one, yet had three ‘mons… while they were three individuals, with who-knew-what amount of ‘mons under their command!
So, this challenger was versed in match theory. She knew her types well enough to get by on that lesson of the gym, and that was just fine by Cilan. He followed her through the next two curtain sections as she revealed that she not only owned the small bird, but also a water type and a dragon type! This was an interesting challenger, to say the least. Cilan stayed silent up until she seemed unsure on her choice of her dragon, in which Cilan gave a polite grin and spoke clearly. "Correct! The dragon-type has many wonderful resistances, and it would be a fine defensive choice to pick against the Water-type."
With that, the curtain raised, and there was just the last room left - where Chili and Cress also awaited, with Cress having his arms politely folded in front of him, and the redheaded Chili keeping his hands on his hips, looking a tad impatient. Cilan walked over and joined them, folding his arms behind his back like a butler would as they all turned to face their challenger.
"My dear, I don't believe we caught your name." Cress' cool voice flowed out as easily as water. Cilan awaited for her response before he spoke up once more. "Now, miss, you must make a choice. Of the three Pokemon you selected, you may only choose one for the Gym Battle for a one-on-one battle versus the Gym Leader." Now this was the Striaton Gym's true challenge - having to pick a Pokemon to use, from which the Gym Leaders would then pick the strongest of themselves to face you down and see how well you faired against a type disadvantage!

So that’s where they were hiding… she thought, noticing that Chili looked impatient—was it because he was itching to battle? Or was it because of something else—that hadn’t crossed her mind yet at that time? She then cringed internally as the three seemingly surrounded her, and she was offered a choice—who would she use, and which one of the three would she be going up against? Seeing that Riku was already listening alertly to the sounds of whatever was going on inside the gym, she quickly took out two Pokeballs—the first one enveloped Sora in a flash of red light; followed by Nixe—even if Nixe was a Water-type, she didn’t have any Water-type moves to use, and would be a challenge.
That left Riku standing right by her; and then she looked at the three individuals who were standing at equal distance from her, and she then said, “I’ve made my choice. I’m fighting with Riku, my Deino.”
Now, it would remain to be seen if she would be dealing with all three of them at once; or if she would be allowed to switch out. She then waited to see what would happen—it was so silent one could hear a pin literally drop and clatter across the area. I hope I don’t go up against all three of them at once, seeing as I’m going into this with my Dragon-type… she thought, bracing herself for the worst—because who knew what would happen, and who knew which one of the three she would be facing?!
As she made her choice, so did the boys of the Striaton Gym. With Deino officially picked, the three looked to one another before nodding knowingly, and Cress stepped forward, giving Izumi a light bow. "It seems that I will be your opponent. I am Cress, the Water-type specialist at Striaton Gym. If you will follow me..." With that, Cress stood up straight, his wavey blue hair falling around his head as he and his brothers walked to a door, opening it to once more reveal the arena area Izumi had been waiting in from before. Cress gestured for Izumi to take one side as Cress took the other, and with a gentle snap of his fingers another figure approached - the Simipour from earlier!
Cress crossed his arms in front of him, eyeing the opponent as Simipour took to the field. "The rules are simple. This shall be a one on one battle, with a fifteen minute time limit. If you can defeat Simipour or last until the end of the time limit, you will be victorious. Any further questions before we begin?" Cress gave a light, almost dreamlike smile, as if lost in a good thought.

Now that her opponent had been decided (it was Cress) they were now about to get things underway! She then watched as one of the three simians appeared—it was the blue one, the one who had brought over the teapot filled with that tasty brew earlier. She then took her position on the opposite side of the arena, and whistled a certain string of notes to call Riku over—he then shuffled over eagerly at the sound of his mistress’ tune; and then stood approximately in front of her. Are there any questions… well… she thought, before shrugging her shoulders and relaxing them—they had tensed up earlier due to excitement. “I believe I have none… let’s do this,” she said, quickly gathering her thoughts and going over the different ‘calls’ on how to attack the much-larger simian in front of her.
“To the match,” she said, giving Cress this two-fingered salute, and then waiting for the first move—who knew what would happen? Okay, this is it. Whatever you do… don’t mess up… because this is all or nothing. All or nothing… she thought to herself, sneaking a glance at her watch, and then activating the button sequence that shifted the normal face into that of a timer that counted down exactly fifteen minutes. The moment she heard the ticking noise, she lowered her right hand and stood ready, waiting for whatever would come barreling their way…!
Alright! The pieces were in play and the match could begin. Cress nodded, and at his signal - coincidentally on time with Izumi's own working - his two brothers displayed a large, digital display clock on the side of the arena, counting down from fifteen minutes. "Let us begin!" Cress called out, his hands flowing out and to the side in a bow as Simipour posed up on one leg. After, a rather serious air seemed to blow over the field as they all prepped for what was to come next. "Simipour, let us begin this. Start us off with a display of your Water Gun!"
From its position on the field, Simipour spun once before aiming down the field at Deino and firing off a powerful stream of water from her mouth, aimed right at the dragon-type! The stream finished up and another began with slightly adjusted aim if the Deino moved, firing off a second blast of Water Gun to try and keep the Deino at a distance. Cress and Simipour would try to keep their distance during this portion of combat, after all.
Post by Izumi Yamamura on Dec 21, 2013 2:52:23 GMT -5
Now that the challenge had begun, she then clenched and unclenched her fingers, before watching Cress and his ally quickly shoot out a blast of water; evidently it had to be some sort of strategy! “Riku, evasive maneuvers, now—and then let’s start the party with your best attack…” she said, watching as the little quadruped shifted around in order to avoid getting hit by most of the second stream of water—and then she revealed her way of issuing commands—even if she knew that Deinos couldn’t see nothing, they could follow the opponent with the sound that their moves made—and hence she decided to bank on this. Several sorrowful notes cut through the air, hanging for a moment before the sound faded—but to Riku, it knew exactly what to do—it quickly held its ground and then inhaled.
Gathering energy was easy for the little quadruped; and a few moments later; a blast of draconic energy shot out from the Deino’s gaping maw; and she watched as the arc raced through the air; and hopefully that would hit it; if not graze it at all. “Don’t back down, move in close and then catch it off guard with your next move!” she said, quickly inserting two of her fingers in her mouth, and giving an ear-piercing whistle; and at the same time the last particles of draconic energy faded away; Riku stood his ground once more and then quickly inhaled—before exuding a very loud, intimidating-sounding Roar that echoed through the area. He may be small; but his voice is definitely loud… she thought, watching and waiting for the next move.
The Deino was rather evasive - this was a good sign, it would be a good battle. Perhaps she would make it to the time limit. Regardless, Cress kept his composure as the low sounds were made, and noticed the Deino reacting - could this be a form of battle strategy, where she moved with noise rather than verbal commands? That would certainly make it difficult to attack, though at this range he knew it would be a ranged attack. They awaited until the dragon-type opened his mouth before Cress issued his order. "Simipour, flow!"
The simian vaulted into a handspring forward, the energy from the attack grazing her body before she landed on one foot, spinning to the side. "Now, Water Gun, then cool her off!" The Simipour fired off another blast of water, this time intentionally to the right to try and get the Deino to peel left, where Simipour took in a short breath and breathed out an Icy Wind attack, the chilly breeze filling the air and sweeping out the attack the Deino, the artic chill capable of halting movement in its tracks.

Ah dang it, this is going to be a tough one… she thought, watching the simian’s reaction to the Dragonbreath, which was followed up by the Roar attack—it didn’t appear fazed in the slightest! She knew she ahd to get this done with quickly; otherwise it would be ending badly—and a sign of it was coming—as she moved to position Riku to dart forward, another blast of water came rocketing out of the Simipour’s mouth—was it a trap; was it something else? Her answer was shown the moment it followed up with an Ice-type attack—one she’d seen and used, with her Cubchoo; it was lucky she hadn’t issued any orders up until this moment!
“Too close of a shave… well let’s mix things up a bit… go forward and connect!” she continued, quickly whistling a certain chain of notes—at first it started high, and then dropped to a pitch so nerve-wracking it was distracting—and then followed up the sudden drop in tune with another, unfamiliar blast—she had been practicing a certain strategy but had no idea if it would work at this point in time—as the tune came out sounding a bit strangled; then increased in pitch before finally fading away like the last stroke of a guitar chord.
To her quadruped dragon, however, this meant something—just as it bared its fangs and charged forward, it skidded madly across the ice that had seemingly formed after the Icy Wind—its feet found no purchase on the slippery surface—it regained its confidence and came out with a Bite attack; but would it connect?
That other string of notes she’d whistled was a command to be careful—yet it had already skidded and began to wobble; because she knew that Ice-type attacks were the one “ace in the hole” that could halt a Dragon-type in its tracks; thankfully Riku hadn’t frozen over.
--Deino: 93%
Skidded across whatever ice had formed after Icy Wind (due to low temperature) and retaliated with a Bite attack--
