She’d finally sent a text message, stating that she’d like to begin their “training sessions”—more like it would be an apprenticeship—to Claire; and she’d gotten the reply that she would be waiting for her at the base of Mt. Moon; she then made a note to herself to try and catch a Misdreavus in the near future, because she liked those so much. She then whistled as she quickly made her way towards the appointed meeting place, and then made sure she had all of her six ‘mons ready; who knew what would happen—and had also braced herself for this very moment. She’d been reading here and there, trying to find out more information about Rocket, but to no success—and she’d done several more errands on the side; which then netted her some more cash in the meantime—and then she finally found herself at the designated meeting area.
She then whistled, and then took out her phone—she then began fiddling with it; and then sent another message to Claire’s number, stating that she was at the appointed meeting place, at the right time. Now, where was she? She began looking around, and just to get warmed up, she began doing a few stretching exercises; because she had a feeling it wasn’t just going to be battle know-how that would be passed on to her. She then began whistling, and would straighten up, wiggling her toes inside her sneakers, before attempting to squat down and reach her knees without bending over, and leg stretches. She hoped that her team would be alright, and that she wouldn’t get creamed on the very first try. After all, they’re still babies… only evolved one I have is Momo at the moment, but who knows what would happen… she thought, continuing to stretch her legs.
After getting the text, Claire was quite excited to get on with her new apprentice! Even though she never got married as her father wanted, her legacy would finally go on in a teacher/student fashion! Still, she had to remind herself that she was Claire Dupin, not the Dark Lady... though if the woman showed a potential to join a more economically fashioned criminal organization, she would jump at the chance. None the less, she would stay friends with her new pupil and keep her dealings as open ended and fair as possible.
Claire was a bit late getting ready, as she decided to wear some casual clothes for this training session. A tank top with a leather jacket and a pair of jeans were on her person in order to break the cold wind of the season. She wore a pair of leather boots which were as stylish as they were practical. Her hair was in a low ponytail behind her and her glasses graced her nose.
"Hi! Sorry I'm late! The business has been a success lately and we had an emergency teleportation we had to do inside of the mountain. They made it out okay, though. Alright, then! Let's get started with the basics of Pokemon and psychology."
Taking out two of her balls, one had a fang sticker on it, the other was an eyeball similar to the Eye of Horus. The two lights flashed and out came Fang, her Granbull, and Warlock, her Alakazam. Fang, thinking that he was about to fight a trainer in battle was gearing up and rubbing his feet on the ground.
"Fang, this is a lesson. You're going to be fighting against Warlock later on, but you're going to have to be patient."
Fang looked surprised and whined, laying itself on the ground while leaning his head in his little hand, pouting. Claire smiled and turned back to Izumi.
"Izumi take out two of your Pokemon, one whom you feel is better at ranged attacks and one whom is better at close range. We'll start on Pokemon psychology and the importance of the bond between your Pokemon."
Claire was speaking 'normally' for herself. She was not as chipper or 'fun' as she was leading on before as Claire. The game face she had was that of her true honest self which seemed more intellectual and nurturing.
"The first thing we need to focus on is how you view yourself. It is a natural aspect of a leader of any team to be confident in one's abilities. Confidence, I have found, comes from knowing what you are, not what you want to be. Accepting everything about yourself will bring a lot of confidence that your Pokemon will see in you. Humans are not as easily defined as Pokemon Types, which makes the need to assert ourselves with our Pokemon more important. It is true that Pokemon have different temperaments and move strategies, but a most Pokemon enthusiasts are aware of what makes a Pokemon work in battle. The first step is knowing how you work. So tell me... how would you define yourself?"

“Really? That’s great to hear,” she said, perking up at the sound of her mentor’s voice. “At least it’s going very well. No trouble, I believe?” she asked, inquiring further, before finishing her stretching exercises. As she listened intently with the lesson at hand, she watched as Claire sent out two ‘mons, and in a flash of red light, a bulldog-like ‘mon appeared, along with another that she regarded as a “Wise Man” (blame the beard). “Just two? Okay, here goes,” she began, finally finding two of the six she carried with her—one of the balls had something scribbled on it, and the other one had dark stripes around the edges of the red—it had taken her some time to find a marker that would write on a Pokeball and permanently stick to the surface without getting worn or chipped. “Okay guys, you can come out now,” she said, and the two balls released a flash of red light; and out came the two she’d chosen; Sora, her Rufflet, and Riku, her Deino. She knew that Riku could follow her by the sound of her voice; and Sora was flapping its wings around, getting ready to begin.
At the posed question, that made her stop and think deeply. After a while of silence (as she was watching Sora peck its beak on the ground, as if looking for something t eat; while Riku “looked” around intently, sniffing the air and listening to every single noise that was in the background) she then said, “How would I define myself… to be honest, this is the start of my journey out of Hoenn; I’ve been tailing someone. I define myself as a novice, because sure, I can hold my own against wild ‘mons that I come across, but against other people, I blend in with the crowd and adapt easily, no matter what their personalities are. You could say that I’m like water, ever-flowing, and can go to any source… I am shaped by the actions of people who influence me; that’s why I am hoping to learn much from you,” she ended, before giving her a bow—it was customary to always give anyone higher than her position a bow of respect.
Claire paused for a moment, letting the girl's response sink into her mind. Nodding, she returned the bow she was given, keeping her eyes to her student out of respect. Taking a moment, she paused to think of a proper response. Warlock merely hovered nearby and nodded over to Claire.
"A nice start. If you keep calling yourself a novice, however, some stronger Pokemon won't follow you. It's... also a bit dangerous letting others influence you so easily. So long as you just take what you need from people so that you can remain yourself, water can take in some disgusting things if its not careful."
Claire smiled again and continued her lecture.
"You have some pretty tough Pokemon for a novice. The Deino in particular could prove a challenge to you if he grows up too fast. Even if he's laid back, he's got the nature of a predator. It eats whatever it deems weaker. Dragons in general fall into this category, usually. It's why I try not to use them. They are proud creatures who believe they don't need anyone but themselves. Raising a Pokemon when they are young and winning them over with diplomacy yields better results than just stepping up, beating them down, then catching them. Some Pokemon will need that test of strength to win them over, however, while others can be made powerful from the ground up. Those others are the ones I specialize in. Sometimes an acknowledgment of the Pokemon's power is all they need. After all, Warlock has a 5,000 IQ. I know he's a lot smarter than I am and I let him use his own judgement in battle. We have made signs together on when he's overwhelmed and needs to be switched out, but other than that, I let him fight his own battles."
Sadly, she learned this fact recently, and her bond with Warlock had skyrocketed in respect since then. He wasn't as lazy as he used to be now that he was permitted to control his own power on the field.
"I studied a lot about Pokemon. Knowing a little about a lot of Pokemon is important, particularly in battles. Most importantly, study up on your own Pokemon so you can bond with them more quickly. It's all about that bond. I got my Magmortar from a Gym Leader in Orre because the members of his team were emotionally kicking him around like a soccer ball. Never be ashamed to trade a Pokemon if he's not happy with you or your other Pokemon. Just make sure who you are trading them with is the right one. Some Pokemon just don't bond to you. Just make certain your Pokemon knows that you are giving it away in love rather than just tossing them aside. It was an amiable trade between us and I even give him status updates and pictures."

“Oh, this one here?” she began, crouching down and then whistling a certain string of notes; to which Riku looked behind him and trotted over to where he could hear the sound of Izumi’s tune. “We’re working out on things. It’s tough having a Dragon-type on the team,” she began, before he came in close enough and looked up at her with an inquiring look, before she slowly yet cautiously reached out for his head—and he allowed her to pet him—“…but it’s very much worth it. I got lucky when I headed over to the Safari zone and I found him,” she said by way of explanation, giving him a friendly scratch behind the ears; before whistling that certain string of notes again, and he trotted back to his approximate position where Sora was pecking the ground (and ruffling his feathers). “I’m trying to get out of that novitiate stage by watching how other people battle. But I’m afraid I’m not picking up on things as fast as I’d want to,” she admitted, looking down at the ground a few moments later, finally admitting her embarrassment.
“In answer to the bonds, well, I always have them out and interact with them. In particular, you remember Momo? She evolved now and she’s a Kirlia… but still pretty much an empath so I’m always watching myself from getting to angry in front of her,” she added with a hint of embarrassment. “I’ll keep that in mind—that not everything should influence my ways as a Trainer. I want to get stronger, because I want to protect someone,” she added a few moments later. “I totally understand what you say about the bonds—it’s like they can sense our own human emotions… and grow from them too,” she ended, remembering the time that she went on a Safari Catch and Momo suddenly evolved from out of the blue! “Bonds. I’ll keep that in mind, of course.” She muttered, more to herself than to Claire, as she quickly extracted a new notepad from her back pocket and started scribbling on it as well, just to keep track.
"Speaking from personal experience, trying to hide things from a psychic is like putting cookies in a glass jar. Warlock knows me better than I know myself. He doesn't even have empathy as a specialty. It's likely when she gets more powerful that she'll be able to put shields up on her psyche in the event she senses your dark side. I've got a bit of that myself."
Thinking about her next point, she looked over to Warlock who floated around in circles in a reclining position, taking a quick power nap as Fang just laid on the ground, bored.
"So taking a step forward from the basics of knowing yourself and knowing your Pokemon; we'll graduate to Pokemon to Pokemon relations in double battles later on. It's important to know what your Pokemon is capable of! Not just knowing what moves it uses, but how effectively they use them. Alright, you two, demonstration time!"
Fang got up quickly and cracked its knuckles at it's fellow team mate. Warlock stopped reclining and got into a battle position.
"Now, Izumi... Other than type advantages, what do you think are some other things to look out for in a battle?"

“She… she got overwhelmed when I… I went nuts for a while back home,” she said by way of explanation; knowing by now that empaths were a sensitive kind of class—they had the tendency to “go with the flow” and get swept up with their own emotions. “Well, I’m trying to curtail my temper now, but the good thing is it rarely shows,” she added with a sheepish grin on her face, noticing that one of Claire’s ‘mons was levitating and apparently sunbathing, while the other just wanted to get up and going! She could feel for them—as Riku was currently listening to the environment around him; while Sora was now ruffling his own feathers and trying to get his own wings spread out and ready to just fly into the sky. After a moment of quiet pondering, she had an answer for her mentor’s question; but she was not that sure if it was right—and she then decided to speak what was on her mind about the topic anyway.
“Entry hazards. I saw somewhere—and read about it too—that if someone has Spikes, or whatever else set up, then it could pose a potential problem… and another thing to watch out for are the status-effecting moves; as well as Abilities. It would take me a while to get through all of them, but that’s my answer… asides from what you’ve already mentioned, of course,” she answered, feeling the confidence seep into her voice. Now what she was lacking was the actual application of everything she’d learned from Leon, since they’d gone over the basics back in Saffron some time ago. “But what I really lack is the application process itself, like, how do these things work in an actual battle. I know the theory, but not practicing it yet is dangerous, if you ask me,” she added with a solemn nod.
"There's method in my madness, Izumi. I'm building up to my point... most trainers know the basics on what moves to watch out for without giving thought to how you should watch out for them. The basics about how humans do war is as vital to know as it is with Pokemon. Warlock... Charge Beam on Fang... Fang, try and attack him with Fire Fang."
Claire's thoughts on the lesson at hand traveled to Warlock and he nodded, letting electricity, letting the two of them fight it out. Fang did his part perfectly trying desperately to run after the swift Alakazam who kept firing electric zaps in his direction... purposefully toned down for a practice run so the zap was little more than a joy buzzer.
"In ancient times, it was the ranged warfare that won the battlefield. Distancing is one of my key elements in training. Knowing how far one's attacks can reach is as important as knowing how far your fist can reach in a boxing match. Having attacks that hit both from a distance and in close proximity safely is a huge strategic advantage no matter what your Pokemon's specialty is. Good training costs money, and I haven't made enough to give Fang a ranged attack... likewise, I haven't been able to invest in a good short range attack for Warlock to ward off physical attackers who can catch him. But, as you see in the illustration in front of you, it is more important to have something that hits from a distance. Now, if Fang were a little faster, the tables would be turned very quickly. This is why I go for speed over defenses. It takes less energy to side step an attack than it does to take the pain in full blast. You try with your Pokemon to get a feel for the distance of your attacks. Understand your Pokemon's attacks and how far they can reach."

She then stood a little taller, then watched the little demonstration—it was like “testing out the waters” as she watched the big-jawed dog face off against the levitating “wise man”; while she was watching them, she heard more of Claire’s ‘lecture’; and it was all beginning to make sense now. When she had mentioned speed, Izumi nodded; sometimes it was imperative that whoever strikes first, would win the round of battle. There were other tactics though… what if she went up against someone who loved stalling for time before letting their big guns fire? She then whistled that certain string of notes again, and Riku’s head swiveled in the general direction of where the sound had come from. “Okay, Riku, try and get in close with a Headbutt attack on Sora. Sora… do your thing with Air Slash, show me how much range you can get in,” she said, hoping that this wouldn’t flop flat on her face…
“Dei, deino.”
“Rufflet, ruff!”
She then backed away and then let the proceedings unfold; as her Deino immediately charged in with his head craned down low; attempting to smack its target out of the area. Sora, on the other hand, quickly scuttled away as fast as his stubby legs could manage, and with a squawk, began flapping his wings and a cross-shaped current of air ripped through the surroundings; and she watched as the two immediately hunched down and went into “sparring mode”; as she called it. It was usually these two that ended up facing each other; and they were somewhat used to each other’s presence; but with Riku being so headstrong and dominant, she feared that Sora couldn’t cope. Fortunately for her, she learned that the Rufflet race had a streak of pride as strong as its own bearings—she’d noticed that her Rufflet was one of the particularly bigger ones of its kind—not the usual small-sized chubby baby birds that they were.
“Riku, switch to your Bite attack, and Sora, go dodge as best as you can!” she continued, issuing the orders as she watched the cross-shaped blade of air cut off the impeding Headbutt attack and sent Riku skidding across the ground. He quickly recovered and then opened his jaws wide, the teeth glistening, and then the Rufflet moved to sidestep, but would he be able to dodge in time…?
Claire nodded her head as she watched the two Pokemon of Izumi's feel one another out for the ranges of their attacks. She would let them fight a little longer as she looked to her own training Pokemon. Fang got frustrated and started hopping up and down, cursing Warlock in it's native tongue. Growling, it kicked the dirt in frustration. Warlock merely hovered and stopped attacking.
"Now, now, Fang. I just used that to illustrate a point. You'll shine in the next lesson... we learn about technique blocking. It's another reason why it's so important to know the distance of your moves. In a pinch, when you believe that dodging is a moot point, or you want to close the distance, you block a technique with another. It's another method of getting in when your speed is a little lacking. Alright, Fang. Use your Ice Fang as a shield and make a dead run to catch up with Warlock."
Turning his massive maw of teeth in to icicles, he used it as a riot shield as he rushed forward. Firing a Charge Beam, the beam couldn't crack the ice around Fang's face as he jumped into the air and bit down on Warlock's arm. Fang was not as gentle as Warlock was to him and a look of pain could be seen on the psychic's face.
"Once a melee attacker has the position, they should do everything in their power to close the distance. I knew that the fang attack was more powerful than Charge Beam in general, but with every Charge Beam, Warlock's Special Attack has been rising. So if you know your opponent is keeping the distance, using a technique block to close the gap is very important. It's also important to know that there are very few defensive powerhouses of Special Attack. There are many more who are very heavy in regular defense, but their special defense is wretched. It's the balanced ones you have to watch out for such as Nidoking. Steroid techniques work wonders to bridge the gap, but it is often prudent to use attack raisers over defense. Here's why... say you have a big brute in front of you like a Ferrothorn. High Defense, High special defense. No matter what you do, it's going to sit there and bide its time slowly picking at you. The point of a Pokemon like that is to anger people. To breech its defenses, one must focus on getting it out of the way as soon as possible... but I digress. Practice a little more distance and see if you can get your Pokemon used to using attack techniques for blocking. The best way I've found to explain it is to "attack the attack". Once they are used to it, we'll train with my Ferrothorn... his attack is very low, so he shouldn't hurt your Pokemon too much, but it will also go into the next lesson of Pokemon team relations."
Claire watched Warlock teleport away from Fang, making him angry. He barked at Warlock, growling slightly as Claire decided to put a stop to this.

When Claire had begun the process of teaching, she then quickly realized that in some way, what she was doing was headed in that direction—that Sora, her Rufflet, could defend with its Air Slash attack, seeing as it had effectively saved him numerous times in the past from melee attackers getting in too close to him. He wasn’t ready to evolve, not just yet, but he knew that he was simply “biding his time” in order to suddenly bloom at the most opportune moment. “Okay, Sora, go use your Air Slash attack again, see if you can stave off Riku’s incoming attack!” she called out, and with a squawk, the Rufflet nodded and quickly flapped its wings as hard and as fast as it could, finally conjuring up two blades of air that intersected and then flew out in a cross-like pattern; screaming towards the Deino that was closing down on it with its fangs bared, ready to take a bite out of its wings!
“Deino, deino!!!” she heard it growl as the gust of air smacked it clean across the face and sent it skidding once more across the ground, before listening intently as the wind whistled overhead. “Okay, now, Sora, try to get in close with a Peck attack… Riku, go use your Dragonbreath, but don’t burn him to a crisp now…” she instructed once more, quickly shifting her footing and watching as her Deino took a deep breath before exhaling a blast of energy—just as her Rufflet was charging in for an attack. It first met the blast of power head-on; but was eventually knocked back and forced to retreat—because ouch, that was hot! “Okay you two, that’s enough for now,” she called out once more, and the two ‘mons stood down and then seemingly resumed their normal routine.
“Attack the attack,” she began, muttering to herself, before realizing what it meant. “Basically,” she began, looking at Claire once more, “it means… meet the fire head-on, as we say? Leap straight into the heart of it and use it like a shield, therefore turning a disadvantage into an opportunity…” she trailed off, looking at her for confirmation, while waiting for the next step of the lesson to unfold.
Nora watched the dragon breath attack and winced at the poor bird.
"In human terms, we would call it a 'parry' only instead of using swords, we're using Pokemon attacks. The more powerful the attack, the more effective the parry because, well, the stronger the sword. I've been experimenting to see if attack types work on one another in this regard... seeing if a water attack blocks a fire attack a little better and such. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It all depends on the kind of attack as well. Not everything is going to be able to parry another attack. Try to save ranged for ranged, and melee to melee for best results, but if you don't have that option, then go for an elemental attack which has some side effects. Normal melee attacks, I have found, work best in a duke fest. I have yet to get into a real melee scuffle, though. Most battles end up at range."
Claire took out another ball, this one with a sticker of barbed wire.
"I haven't fully trained this Pokemon, so it will be a learning experience for Maiden as well. It will be two on one to promote what I have just taught you as well as add some of the lecture on Pokemon to Pokemon relationships."
Maiden, the Ferrothorn came out of her ball and yawned long and hard. She blinked for a few moments regarding the two Pokemon in front of her with this 'whatever' gaze and looked to Claire.
"Now, be very careful... she does have Iron Barbs, so physical attacks will hurt your own Pokemon. That's the only hint I will drop."
The Ferrothorn crossed together two of her long arms as if crossing her arms, balancing on her third arm and narrowing her eyes. It appeared that Nora had disturbed her nap.
She would wait for the Pokemon to get ready before ordering an attack.
"Remember distancing and your ability to use your attacks to block. But also for this exercise, I want to see how well your Pokemon know one another when working together. Combining attacks is crucial in team battle, and knowing how to set them up with one another is also important."

Sora was now unruffling his rather ruffled feathers on one side, while scratching the ground—while Riku was sniffing the ground, trying to pick up the scent of anything he could deem as interesting. Once Claire had seen their display and was satisfied, she then perked up her ears and then listened to the next part of the lecture—before another ‘mon of hers made an appearance on the ‘battleground’; and then regarded her own small ones with some hint of distaste. Izumi was lucky that Riku was ‘blind’ by all accounts; Sora, however, was not. It gave an impatient squawk, before shuffling over to where Izumi is and nudging her, before seemingly pointing over to the big bramble-looking… being.
“Calm down Sora, don’t fuss. Now, I want you and Riku to work together, okay?” she said, patting the lone feather that was sticking straight up out of his forehead, and he gave an affectionate squawk before prancing over to where Riku had turned his head; seemingly listening to the sound of her voice. She then decided to test something out; that thing she’d been practicing while on the journey. After she’d learned that Riku was blind—and yet had very acute hearing—she decided to turn this into an advantage, and then gave a lilting whistle, which ended on a sharp note; she was glad to see that Riku snapped at attention, before she clucked her tongue once and said, “Now you two. Don’t get too close. Those spikes look nasty.”
“Deino, dei!”
“Ruff, rufflet!”
“Ready when you are,” she called out to Claire on the other side of the field—before remembering that this was a battle and that the only thing she could rely on were the two small beings in front of her. She’d poured her trust into the two, now would they turn and trust each other in return? Izumi then realized that this was some kind of introduction to “double battles”; as it seemed—only it was a bit unfair on Claire’s end; yet the bramble-looking being (that was now balancing on one leg it seemed) seemingly had the upper hand. She then got an idea and then called out to her Rufflet, “Sora, get your Tailwind status-boost ready, and Riku…” she trailed off before whistling a different melody, something that sounded like an elegy—but to Riku’s ears he knew just exactly what it meant; it was their way of communicating that she wanted him to use a certain attack.
He then took a deep breath and gathered all his energy, and then Izumi shouted from behind them, “GO!”
She felt the wind whip up quite suddenly as Sora flapped his stubby little wings as fast as he could manage, which then cued Riku to release the ‘breath’ he’d been holding, and then expelled a blast of energy, which raced towards the large bramble-shaped creature!
Claire tilted her head up slightly as she heard the tune. That was some advanced trainer technique in masking your commands. The tailwind blustered by and the Dragonbreath attack fired forward. Claire clapped as the attack hit the armored creature.
"Using a static-damage technique on a high-defensive foe. Good strategy. I also like the whistle. I was going to cover commands later, but you seem to have a good handle on that. Maiden, Ingrain and fire pin missiles at our opponents. This is a good attack to use because it's what I like to call a ranged melee attack."
The iron plant grew vines underneath her and 'sat' on the vines as she allowed all three of her appendages free to fire upon her two opponents, one arm on each opponent. The one on the left fired at the fluffy bird twice, and the one on the left fired on the dragon four times. As she fired, some of the damage from the breath attack seemed to heal.
"Since you can see the attack coming, try and block them with your own melee attacks. They won't do much damage, so it's a good exercise."

Pin Missi—?! Was the first thing that crossed her mind, before watching the bramble of a ‘mon quickly fire out a series of shots of light—that quickly reformed themselves into arrowhead-shaped ammunition—and at that same moment, said Tailwind blew faster behind the two ‘mons; and she then let loose once more with the whistling of the mournful elegy. Sora could only look at his mistress in confusion—yet Riku, on the other hand, understood it perfectly well; quickly taking another deep breath before exhaling it all in one pure blast of draconic energy. She then called to her Rufflet, “Sora, use your Air Slash attack and try to knock as many of those incoming projectiles out of the way!”
“Ruff, rufflet!” she heard it squawk—as her Deino was still exhaling the draconic energy, managing to shatter and knock aside most of the initial blast headed their way. As the Ferrothorn prepared to fire off another volley of shots, she watched as Sora quickly flapped it wings as fast as it could manage—before finally producing the cross-shaped current of air; which he then sent headed towards the incoming barrage of projectiles with another flap! “Keep it up Sora!” she called, encouraging him from the sidelines. While most of the arrowhead-shaped projectiles were either incinerated by the draconic energy—or in Sora’s case, dispelled by the blast of concentrated air—there were still some that managed to get through the onslaught, and she watched as another volley of shots were fired—she then leapt into action, commanding the two ‘mons with the following; “Sora, use your Air Slash again and try to knock all of it out of the sky—time it with this!”
She then whistled the same elegy; and Riku took that as the cue to take a deep breath and expelled another blast of draconic energy at the exact same time that the cross-shaped air current materialized, and the two attacks combined and shot through the space between the two and the Ferrothorn. She watched as the wave of energy screamed through the air; would it hit or would it just evaporate…?
--Tailwind (2/4); Dragonbreath(2x); Air Slash(2x)--
