Having seemingly picked up a Safari Tag from somewhere (it had something to do with some behind-the-scenes jobs, apparently) izumi decided to pretty much head out to the Safari Zone and try her luck. As they say, things get better the third time around… she thought with a grin as she walked through the gate, and handed over her Tag… and received one Safari ball. Just… one?! Oh dang it, now I know why people are always hard-pressed with their luck here… she thought as she walked past the counter, after going through a preliminary check and pat-down, just to make sure she wasn’t going to go on a random “killing spree”. She then scoffed once she was past the gate, and finally found herself looking at the very vast, very majestic expanse of land that represented the Safari Zone. She could see various Trainers going in and out of the tall grass, some were even climbing trees, and here she was, right at the very start… “Now what…” she said to herself, quickly squaring her shoulders and then walking off towards a promising-looking clump of grass.
After a while, she decided to let out her newest recruit, Sora, for some fresh air… just to see if he’d gotten used to her. She had a brief flashback to the moment where she’d caught him, and it was pretty ugly—she’d asked Momo to smack him with a Toxic attack, and he didn’t take too happily to that after she’d made a mad dash to the Pokemon Center to get her troops refreshed and recovered. “Are you still mad at me?” she asked Sora, who appeared in a flash of red light, and promptly hopped over and began pecking at the hemline of her jeans. “Hmm, guess not. Sorry about that time, okay?”
“Rufflet? Ruff, ruff, rufflet!” she heard him exclaim, continuously pecking at her jeans (and eventually, her boots as well) before continuing to hop forward. She then followed suit, wondering what she’d run into on this fine day…

Just as she took a sharp turn, she came across a ‘mon that… “What is that growing out of its back…” she said to herself, and then whistled, calling Sora over. He then scuffled before attempting to flap his wings, and eventually hopped over to where she was standing, unfortunately the whistling sound caught the wild ‘mon’s attention as well, and then it looked over to where she was with an inquiring gaze. “Saur, bulba… Bulbasaur?” she heard it mutter, before seeing two vine-like appendages come out of its back and attempted to strike Sora! “Crap, he’s on the offensive, Sora, go use your Air Slash attack, and try to avoid those… things!” she called out, quickly skidding backwards and almost losing her balance, yet righting herself just in time before her bum kissed grass.
“Rufflet!” she heard Sora call out, and she watched as he flapped his wings as hard as he could manage, and then a cross-shaped current of air seemingly appeared out of nowhere, and zoomed towards the incoming appendages—they were deflected by the initial impact, so a weaker part of the Air Slash attack actually hit what she guessed was a Bulbasaur—watching it skid backwards by a few paces. “Keep it up Sora, try another Air Slash attack!” she continued, holding up her hands to her face due to the sudden gust of wind that Sora had generated due to the earlier attack. “Rufflet!” came the acknowledgment, and the same attack quickly materialized; this time whooshing through the air unhindered, and smacked the Bulbasaur straight in the face—just as she saw what looked like purple granules appearing from out of the ground!
“Sora, dodge that, now!”
“Ruff, rufflet!” he called out, quickly hopping towards one side—and this time taking the initiative and flying straight forward—it was as if he’d begun developing some sense of protection over his new Trainer—and Izumi had barely enough time to affirm the action with, “Go, use Peck, now!”
“Rufflet!” she heard from much further up ahead, hearing the sound of smacking hard against the Bulbasaur’s bulb-shaped organ; before watching the figure collapse back into the grass—and Rufflet hopped back to where she was. “Good job, Sora,” she said with a grin, quickly going towards a path that seemingly branched off towards what looked like a marshy area, hoping that the pickings were better here…

Now that she’d gone down the path she’d chosen, she was about to yawn—when another ‘mon appeared, but this time, it looked vaguely familiar… or was it? Blinking once, then twice, then one more time, she then stopped dead in her tracks—and so did Sora as well. “My, my, looks like today’s my lucky day!” she said with a grin, quickly whistling and calling her Rufflet over—for it had hopped on far ahead; but not too far to be within the striking range of the ‘mon, which began talking in a gruff manner, “Deino? Dei, Deino!!!”
“Oh crap, you have got to be kidding me, are the Safari ‘mons really this aggressive?!” she said out of surprise, quickly following it up with a command, “Sora, go use Air Slash, now!” while backing up enough in order to have room to issue commands from a safe distance—she knew little about Deino, but there was potential within it! “Ruff, rufflet!” she heard Sora chirp, before the flapping of wings echoed throughout the area—and a gust of wind picked up at the same moment it did so. Soon after, Sora then quickly unleashed the Air Slash attack, and Izumi saw the blades of air whistling towards the engaged Deino.
“Dei, deino!” she heard it growl, before it charged Sora’s way, opening its mouth and baring its fangs- it was coming in for a biting attack of some sort! It was about halfway towards the Rufflet when the Air Slash attack hit it head-on, and it grunted in pain before being sent back several paces. After that, the Deino picked itself up and recovered, before rearing its head down—and she recognized what attack it was before her mind even processed it. “Sora, try and dodge it, then follow it up with your Hone Claws status increase!” while bracing herself for the worst.
“Rufflet!” she heard Sora chirp from up ahead and moved to dodge it—yet was sent back several feet as well, because the Headbutt attack had connected in its full force! “Sora, are you okay?!” she shouted, quickly stepping forward and approaching it, while the Deino leered some distance away, as if mocking her to “come and get me!!!” while staring both Trainer and ‘mon down. “Ruff, rufflet,” she heard Sora call out, and then attempted to move forward on wobbly legs. “Okay, Hone Claws, then go in and try to land your best Peck attack, got it?”
“Rufflet!” she heard it call out, as if ready to fight to the finish. The Deino quickly reared back before taking a deep breath—what was it going to do? She then heard the slashing sound, which signified that Sora had done its Hone Claws status increase, before quickly hopping towards the Deino and coming down on it with all it could muster and throw into its Peck attack—cutting off the Deino before it could release its planned attack—and then Sora quickly hopped back, on its wobbly legs, before she called it back into its Pokeball, watching it vanish in its red light.
“Good job, Sora, now… Kuma, do your thing!” she said, calling out her second ‘mon, and in another flash of red light, the Cubchoo appeared—and then sniffled. Wasting no time—as the Deino was coming in for another Headbutt attack, she called, “Kuma, go use your Icy Wind attack, now!”
“Cubchoo!” she heard the reply, before it took a breath—and the wind temperature in the nearby area dropped down several degrees—and then Kuma unleashed a blast of icy-cold breath; headed towards the charging Deino. Its seemingly fast Speed was slowed down somewhat due to the chilly air, and was left reeling—but Izumi wasn’t going to let this chance slip by, and hoping for the best, followed up the command with, “Kuma, freeze it with Powder Snow, now!”
“Choo!” she heard the reply, and it then followed up the attack with a flurry of snowflakes seemingly falling from the sky—but it was in reality generated by Cubchoo’s snot trail—and the Deino was rearing up with its open mouth when the snowflakes hit it…
“Come on Kuma, back down, and hold your ground!” she shouted, quickly tossing the lone Safari ball she had with her in her hands, watching as the capsule opened up and swallowed the very beat-up Deino in a flash of red light, and waited nervously as it rocked from side to side…

She waited with bated breath… and then let out a cheer as the ball stopped fidgeting; that meant that she’d captured the Deino! “Now what am I going to name you…” she trailed off with a grin as Kuma trundled over to where she stood, sniffling its snot trail back up happily. “Cub, cubchoo!” she heard him say, and she squatted down to pat him on the head before saying, “Good job there, now, let’s get on out of here…” she added, standing up and picking up the lone Safari Ball that was given to her. Now that she’d got what she came for, she quickly pulled out Kuma’s temporary residence and recalled him back in a flash of red light, before pocketing it along with the other residences where Ralts, Mienfoo, and Rufflet now resided.
Now, shall I try my luck one more time before going off for training? She though with a grin as she headed back to the entrance, treading the same path she’d walked on while headed out here. She was, at least for the day, one of the more lucky ones that came across an unexpected ally at the most random time… “Now I know…” she trailed off, starting to scrape together the full details of her “dream team”. She then made a mental note to herself to get a notepad and start carrying it around with her so that she could scribble down details as she was going around and doing her Hoenn Gym Challenge.
