Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
Johto. A region immersed in the cultures and traditions of the past. Unlike some other regions, they celebrated their heritage proudly.
Zernebog’s face was impassive as he walked within the hustle and bustle of Olivine’s port, expertly weaving through the massive throng of people that always occupied the area at peak hours. He didn't let any of his bubbling excitement show on his face. There was time for that later when he was alone.
It had been over two years since he had set foot in this region. Even then, those few visits were strictly for business. However, now he had the free time to wander around the region as much as he pleased. Given that this place was a goldmine for information about the shared past of both this region and the Kanto region, he was very excited to learn new things at his own pace. Of course, there were other things to do aside from look at and study old places, which he’ll get to do at the same time as well with no nags to bother him and tell him to just focus on the site.
Life couldn't be any better!
Why, he could almost swear that he could feel the winds of change heading his way, bringing along good fortune! Maybe it would come in a flash, bringing him along for the ride? He couldn't wait.

an acquired taste
She hadn’t been in Johto too long, if anything, she just arrived a few days ago. If memory served right, her father’s side of the family lived within this region, but she didn’t really want to bother with meeting those people for a long while. After her recent divorce and new start on life, Ricki just wanted to be on her own for a few weeks. She needed to leave the past behind, but it always had a knack for coming back and biting her in the ass. That knowledge alone was enough to drive a once optimistic and happy-go-lucky Ricki into a state of frustration and annoyance with the world.
It would also explain why she was grumbling to herself as she ate. Carrying a box of a large variety of donuts, the not-so-morning person that was Ricki made her way around the busy crowds of Olivine city. She was easily swerving around and dodging the patrons not paying a wink of attention to where they were going and just simply walking their memorized paths. Honestly, if she weren’t on her way to trying to get back to her hotel room. Having to buy her breakfast rather than taking advantage of the free breakfast bar, Ricki was admittedly a bit grumpier than usual simply because of her own mess up.
Coming to a stop at the front of a group of pedestrians, she shifted the weight of her box of donuts to one arm. Setting her thumb on the button, the impatient green haired trainer rapid fired the button to change the signal. Pressing the button repeatedly, she seemed to demand every car in the world stop and let her go. She was pretty much ignored, but this only caused her to press the button more. She was beginning to earn stares from the group of people around her, but the ever simple minded Ricki didn’t pay much mind to this. Green hair tended to attract attention, her attitude, her temper; she was a walking talking cry for attention.
As she pounded the button, her eyes diverted to a strange movement from the corner of her eye and she watched a toy car slowly begin to roll out into traffic. Over the subtle roar of traffic and idle chatter amongst patrons, there was a woman’s shout and Ricki froze at the sight of a small child slipping out from between the legs of the crowd. Relieving the button from her impatient attack, Ricki began to make her way towards the young boy beginning to walk out into the traffic. Not bothering to give warning, Ricki simply shoved her box of donuts into the arms of another pedestrian, probably causing the donuts to get smashed or make a mess of sorts.
Grabbing the kid roughly by the back of his shirt, Ricki tugged him from the street, falling back into the crowd with the boy in tow. A roar of complaints and shouts came from the collision, but a disgruntled Ricki paid them no mind as she quickly slid off to the side with the crying kid in tow. “Calm down, squirt, you can’t just run out into traffic like that” she scolded softly, kneeling down to the ground, out of the way of the passing pedestrians. He continued to cry for his mother, Ricki looking up in time to see a very pissed off woman marching right for her. She dug into her bag and pulled out another toy car and set it in the kid’s hands. “Be careful” she mumbled and got up, turning to see the group of people were already half way across the street. Where was the person she’d handed off that box of donuts to?!
With one more look to the side to see the woman glaring daggers at the thuggish looking Richelle Jace, Ricki wasted no time taking off towards the crowd. “Hey! Come back here with my donuts!” she declared.

”Huh?”
Zernebog could only blink as a box of donuts was suddenly shoved into his arms by some green hared girl without saying a word before quickly running away. Frowning, he looked down at the girl’s gift.
It looked like he was wrong. It was a box of squished donuts, if the filling and fried batter oozing from the sides were any indication.
Despite the ruined pastries, Zernebog simply shrugged. Well, donuts were donuts and he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Besides, given that girl’s behaviour when she gave him these donuts, she probably stole it from someone else or something. Best to dispose of the evidence as quickly as possibly before the angry owners come for it… in his stomach.
He smirked toothily and began to walk away from the crowd of pedestrians, completely unaware of the commotion that had formed because of the green haired girl’s actions. If he had noticed it, he might’ve stayed and given her back the box without a fight, but alas he was too engrossed in the allure of the damaged but probably still-tasty treats that was handed to him.
He was about to turn a corner when he heard a female voice demand the donuts back. Risking a glance to his back, he saw that the female who shouted was the same green haired girl who handed him the box.
She wants her most likely stolen pastries back? Zernebog mentally scoffed. No chance of that. It’s mine now~
His smirk widening slightly, he quickened his pace into a fast jog and began to whistle a slightly off-beat tune.
Taking off into the crowd, she hadn’t actually managed to spot the man she’d shoved the donuts at until she noticed someone actually react to her shouting. While most turned to look at her, one person picked up his pace and took off around the corner. Seeing the action, Ricki quickly redirected her route and took off after the man. As she ran, though, she began to unclip a board from her bag and tossed it down on the ground. With a smooth transition from running to jumping on the board and gliding through the crowds, Ricki maneuvered around the pedestrians and towards her intended target.
Keeping her body low, she easily balanced on the board and flew after the white-haired thief. Tugging on a pair of gloves from the bag, Ricki actually set her hand on the ground to help make sharper turns as she weaved after her target. It took a bit of pursuit, before she was close enough that no one would have a chance to get between them without being instantly crashed into. “I paid for those, you jackass, give me back my fuckin’ breakfast, or I swear!” she snarled, standing up to slam her foot on the ground and quickly add speed to her roll. The moment she was close enough, she moved to latch onto the back of the other’s shirt, keeping a firm grip and adjusting her stance. “Stop already, will ya?!” she scolded.
From the angle, and due to a relatively poor memory, Ricki didn’t recognize her subordinate, and acquaintance. All she knew was this jackass was trying to steal her food, and she’d be damned if she let him get away with it.

Most people would flinch at the sound of all that venom and fury dripping from those words, foul or not. Zernebog Romanov wasn’t like most people. Instead of flinching, he did something else entirely.
His lips curled into a feral grin. He always did love a challenge!
Spotting the railings of a fire escape, his grin turned even more feral. He tossed the box of squished donuts very high up into the air and then jumped up. He quickly latched onto one of the lower railings with his hands and quickly pulled himself up into the air and into an almost perfectly horizontal position facing the metal platform of the fire escape, incidentally dodging the girl’s grasping hand by nearly a meter. He then manoeuvred himself onto the fire escape with a solid push of his arms and a perfect flip and landed just in time to catch the box of donuts before it fell to the ground.
He threw the girl a smirk and a cheeky wink before running up the fire escape as fast as he could. There was no way that the girl could catch him now that he was going up the building! The donuts were going to be all his and they were going to taste so much better sprinkled with the taste of victory!

Rather than stopping in response to her shouting, it seemed her rage only encouraged the boy to continue running away from her. Gritting her teeth, Ricki quickly maneuvered the board to jolt it to a stop as her target yanked himself up onto a fire escape. As he pulled himself up, she kicked the board up and clicked it back to her bag, pulled out a pokeball. Tossing it down, a large Bronzong appeared before her. Without a moment of hesitation, Ricki jumped up to grab his arm and tugged herself up onto the top of him, not even waiting to get herself completely situated before she ordered Shield to follow the boy.
While she hooked her legs around the Bronzong’s ‘shoulders’ the Pokémon was already levitating up into the air to follow the cheeky bastard. As Zerenebog reached the top of the fire escape and the top of the building, Ricki allowed herself to slip off of the Bronzong, flipping backwards through the air and landing in a crouch beside Zernebog. Rolling her shoulders and ignoring the fact her hood had fallen back to allow her vibrant green hair to float freely, she was already raising back up and locking a very pissed off glare on Zernebog.
“Alright, motherfucker, give me back my food” she demanded, marching towards him with Shield the Bronzong close behind. She paused for a moment, and blinked a few times when she finally got a good look at the thief’s face. He looked familiar, not extremely so, but familiar enough to make Ricki nearly panic. Familiar people meant people back from her home region, and her home region meant people who might want to try and kidnap her, again. She’d stopped approaching him at this point and stared for a good moment, before asking “Who the hell are you, anyways?”

Hah! Made it~! Now all I need to do is to go to the next building!
Golden eyes gleamed victoriously. However, they soon dulled when they spotted the same green haired girl on the same rooftop, followed by a floating blue bell with red dots on it. Bronzong, if he remembered right.
Or not.
While Zernebog was pretty sure that he could outrun that slower-than-a-Slowpoke pokemon and the girl, it was still a Psychic pokemon. Who knows what it had in its bag of tricks? Prometheus was proof of that. It looked like fleeing was out of the cards now. Damn.
Zernebog finally got a good look at the green haired girl’s face when she paused for some indiscernible reason after cursing him out and demanding his prize back. It took all of his considerable self-control not to pale when he recognized her face. Damn it all to hell! It was one of them! And not just anyone of them, but one of their leading stooges!
Were they after him? Why would they be? Surely they wouldn’t have missed just one person right? What could he have that they would want?
Immediately, flashes of some of his previous missions flashed in his mind, proving him wrong. He had to stop himself from cringing at all of the blood he had shed back then. No, no… he wasn’t going back there. Ever. He didn’t want to be that person again.
Zernebog was preparing himself for the worst when he heard her ask for his identity, nearly making him laugh out loud in relief. Thank Arceus! She didn’t recognize him at all! It was insulting that he was forgotten so easily, but then again it was hard to remember him when he removed his signature red Mohawk a year ago.
”Now that’s….” He let himself trail off for a minute before continuing with a smirk. ”A secret.”
He then shrugged. ”Besides, I doubt you’d care about the name of some guy you chased up a roof.”
”Anyway, you want this box back…?” He raised the box of slightly squished donuts for her to see. ”Why don’t we have a little wager, then~?”
”Let’s a have a pokemon battle. Right here. Right now.” He pointed to the rooftop. ”Three pokemon, single battles. If you win, you get your donuts back and I’ll leave and not bother you again.”
He then held a finger up. ”If you lose though, I get to keep the donuts and you have to forget that I was ever here.”

Something about the other’s golden gaze, white hair, and smug smirk rang like a distant bell in Richelle Jace’s memory. She struggled to place a name to his face, though, and it was slowly driving her nuts. His coy avoidance of giving his name and the following actions made it clear this guy wasn’t one of the Arcane members still trying to track her down, thankfully. She was still not comfortable with the idea of someone from her past running around like this, though. He may not be tracking her down, but what if he was up to something else entirely? Gritting her teeth, Ricki moved her hand to her belt as he rattled on, getting a clear idea of what he wanted before he got to the point.
If only the two could see the humorous irony in the brief moment that one thought the other was chasing them down. Her focus was no longer really on her donuts, granted she was still starving for the sweet treats. Even if she could see they were pretty much crushed, being low on money, she wasn’t going to be picky. Pulling her Bronzong’s pokeball from her belt, again, she prepared to return the Pokémon if the man across from her tried to pull out something to counter the Pokémon.
“Fine, but you choose your Pokémon first. Also, I don’t fight without knowing who I’m battling” she tacked on, and gestured to herself. “Richelle Jace, ex-Arcane Admin of Trainers” she informed, eyes sparking with an old fire at the title slipping from her mouth. “You still part of the group, or have you gone rogue, too?” she asked, slowly rattling her mind for the other’s name. Did it start with an S? No, maybe it was a T? Si... Tig… What was it? Glaring at the other, she scanned his face as if trying to read a Name tag with the world’s tiniest hand writing.

It didn’t take long for the green haired girl to give her assent. Frankly, Zernebog knew that she would accept his challenge because anyone who could chase him all the way here with such persistence wouldn’t back down at the prospect of a pokemon battle with a stranger.
However, before he was able to even think about who he might want to use first, the girl then mentioned that she didn’t battle people she didn’t know. That was an understandable request, but he personally thought that it was a bit restrictive considering the world
”Well, I bet you don’t battle a lot then.” Zernebog couldn’t help but deadpan, raising an eyebrow even though it was covered by his bandana.
”You already know who I am.” Zernebog chuckled as he subtly eyed the Bronzong. ”You just can’t remember.”
He went quiet after that, mulling over the rest of her words for a minute, as well as other things. Once he came to a decision, he unclipped a pokeball from his hidden belt and expanded it.
”Don’t worry, I’m a rogue all the way. Left some time ago.” He pointed out as he casually tossed the pokeball up and down. ”Irreconcilable differences. The usual.” He added, intentionally downplaying the reason –or rather, reasons- he left Arcane all those months ago.
He suddenly snapped his wrist and caught the pokeball while it was in mid-air during one of his tosses, holding it firmly in a gloved hand. ”But enough about me. It’s fight time.”
With that, he threw the pokeball forward and watched as it released a large, winged draconian figure from its confines.
”ZAAAAAARD!” The newly-released black-scaled, ruby-eyed Charizard roared to the heavens, enjoying the first breath of fresh air –well as fresh as it could get in a city, anyway- he had in a while. His scales seemed to sparkle in the sunlight, despite being as black as pitch.

THE BATTLE BEGINS; ZERNEBOG
To say this guy was irritating was probably an understatement at this point, especially with the fact Ricki was not the type to put up with this kind of bullshit in the mornings. She was ready to march over and deck him instead of battling him. The infuriating and snarky son of a gun just kept poking and prodding. Rather than telling her his name, he just assured her that she knew him, but that’s not what she wanted to know. She knew that, she knew she’d met him at one point, but his name was still escaping her. As he just assured her of the things she already knew, Ricki’s blood boiled. Brow twitching slightly, the green haired trainer was ready to chuck something at his face.
While he continued to run his mouth, Ricki was slightly relieved to hear that he was at least a rouge member of the group. Her paranoia about Arcane still following her was her main reason for avoiding staying in places too long. Elinda had assured her that the group was over and done with in Snowpoint, and wouldn’t follow her anymore. Ricki couldn’t stop being anxious about the idea, though. The thought of people following her, chasing her down for some reason, it unsettled her, especially since she didn’t even know they were chasing her until she was caught. Arcane wasn’t her concern at the moment, though. She needed to focus on curb stomping this annoying Donut Thief.
A Donut Thief who decided to start off by revealing a black Charizard, immediately ticking Ricki off even more. She’d only seen one black Charizard before, and the owner was one of the last few people she really wanted to think about at the moment. Turning her chilling gaze to her Bronzong, the floating steel type calmly floated forward. Once being told it was her turn, Ricki scoffed quietly and snarled “Alright, my turn.” Taking a deep breath to try and calm herself, Ricki stomped her foot on the ground hard enough to make a loud thud. After that, the wave of anger immediately caused her to stomp a couple more times, before the wave of angry energy finally seemed to become controllable. With one last harsh stomp, Ricki’s eyes locked on the battlefield as she began. “Shield, Safeguard, and then put it down” she growled.
Instantly following it’s trainer’s orders, the Bronzong glowed softly to reveal it was using Safeguard to protect himself from any sort of status conditions the Charizard could cause. Following the preparation, it proceeded to glow once more, and slowly gave off a soothing white glow. With a low call, like the toll of a bell, the Bronzong started up a Hypnosis attack, attempted to put the Charizard to sleep.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
There was nothing more beautiful or satisfying than driving one’s opponent to a blustering rage. Zernebog grinned at the sight of his ex-boss stomping her foot on the ground like a little kid on a tantrum. Though the circumstances themselves were different, it was like watching some spoiled brat whining over how her parents wouldn’t give her the toy she wanted.
If she was as good as those other people in Arcane made her out to be though, then anger wouldn’t be enough to make her mess up and make mistakes. Maybe she might even be able to use her anger to give her razor-sharp focus, but that was unlikely. She certainly didn’t look like the type, though he never knew. If there was one thing he knew about people within Arcane after all, it was that they were full of surprises.
The white haired trainer continued to watch with the same smug grin on his face even as she finally calmed down and ordered her Bronzong to use Safeguard and some other move that would supposedly put down Hyperion. Really now? How presumptuous. If she honestly thought that she could stomp him into the ground like some common ant, she had another thing coming.
”Skyfall.” At the sound of Zernebog’s voice, Hyperion quickly launched himself upwards with a mighty flap of his wings, dodging the white beam by a wide margin. He then soared above the rooftop and inhaled sharply, his eyes gleaming with the promise of violence.
”Zard!” A moment later, a fairly-large fireball rocketed toward the Bronzong very quickly. If the fireball would hit the Bronzong, it would detonate into a large fiery explosion. If it missed though, it would still detonate into a powerful fiery explosion, only larger and with the ability to reach the Bronzong anyway if it wasn’t fast enough since there would be nothing to absorb the blast.

THE BATTLE BEGINS; ZERNEBOG
It would have been a better idea to switch Shield out for another Pokémon, knowing that there was a very clear type advantage here, but it was too late for that. Ricki had started this battle off already and she was going to have to finish this off sooner rather than later. With the Charizard’s super effective fire and her Bronzong’s slowness, it would be difficult to avoid the fire. That was the issue with having a slower Pokémon, but what he lacked in skill, Shield made up for with a powerful defense. He’d be able to withstand the super effective attacks longer than most, but not forever.
As the Charizard avoided the Hypnosis, Ricki snapped her fingers cueing the Bronzong to stop before the attack hit Zernebog. While it would be convenient to just make the other trainer fall asleep and get her donuts back through those means, she wasn’t in the mood to let this battle end here. Looking up at the Charizard in the sky, Ricki recalled the other’s word choice and gritted her teeth when a large ball of fire started coming at them. “Confusion!” she quickly declared. The Bronzong’s eyes glowed as a purple hued beam shot out of the arch on the top of it's head to quickly wrap around the ball of fire. Disrupting the path and causing it to sway, the collision of forces caused the fire to burst in the air.
The explosion sent flames flicking everywhere, too many to use Confusion on again to keep them from hitting. As the fire hit Bronzong’s front, Ricki was ducking away to avoid getting hit by the fire herself. Shaking her head and immediately looking back, the trainer swiftly ordered “Return fire!” Once more Bronzong’s eyes illuminated, but rather than another wave of fire to shoot back, nothing appeared to happen for a moment. It was a few seconds before suddenly the area around the Charizard began to explode with small waves of strange energy as the Bronzong used Extrasensory. As the Charizard would have to try and avoid the sudden explosions of energy around it, Shield followed the attack with another hit of Hypnosis to try and knock the fire-flyping-type off kilter.
Shield uses Confusion to disturb the path of Flame Burst, but is hit by some of the flames. He then uses Extrasensory that has a chance of Flinching at 10% and followed with another shot of Hypnosis.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
Confusion?
Zernebog’s eyes almost widened, but then he remembered something important about his opponent’s pokemon. Psychic. Right. You’d think that she’d use a stronger move instead of that one….
The thought that she may have been underestimating him had already crossed his mind, but if she was then it could only be to his advantage. Besides, experience had taught him that actions spoke much better than words. If the thought ever crossed her mind, he was going to beat it out of her pride and pokemon, with the added incentive of squished donuts to boot! A prize was still a prize, no matter how measly.
Time for lesson number one. ”Open the hellmouth.”
Even up in the air, Hyperion heard Zernebog’s order clearly. ”Char!” However, before he could begin executing the order, he was suddenly assaulted by waves of energy from everywhere around him just as the green haired human said Return fire!
However, he didn’t let the pain distract him from seeing the other attack aimed at him- another beam. He figured that it was probably going to be worse than what he was going through right now, so the Charizard gritted his teeth through the pain and forced himself to dodge the next shot while inhaling deeply.
The black Charizard then made fire and smoke come into his mouth and mix there before releasing it as a swirling sphere of orange, yellow, red and black that quickly shot off while the Bronzong was still firing the beam, using his speed advantage to the fullest. Whether or not the ball would it its intended target, it would still detonate into a powerful and wide explosion of white-hot smoke particles and tongues of fire, adding a lingering component that would burn as long as the smoke remained in the air.
Idly, Zernebog thought that it was a good test to see if a Bronzong had any forms of lungs to speak of because he knew through experience that it hurt to inhale that nasty stuff. That was why he was already stepping back as far away as he could without falling off the rooftop, as far as he could be from the blast radius as possible.
{Spoiler}Battle Summary: Hyperion gets hit by the Extrasensory, but manages to dodge the Hypnosis beam and fire off a combo move: Smokescreen + Flame Burst.
She hated these odds, she wasn’t going to lie about that, but that didn’t mean she was going to cop out. She’d almost completely forgotten about her stolen breakfast and was more so just acting on instinct now. If it wasn’t for the empty feeling in her gut, there was no doubt the doughnuts would have escaped her mind. Her focus wasn’t on breakfast, though. The battle was getting heated with the super effective Charizard speeding around and avoiding most of the status inflicting moves Shield was sending his way. She had to figure out how to get it to slow down, and that could easily be done if one of the moves would actually hit. Luckily, he wasn’t able to avoid the Extrasensory, but it didn’t seem to slow the flying lizard down.
Open the hellmouth? Ricki’s eyes lingered on Hyperion’s mouth as a whirlwind of smoke and fire all came out at once. Seeing her Bronzong was still in the midst of a Hypnosis attack. Waving her hand, she called “Cancel and deflect!” out as quickly as she could. The Bronzong immediately shut down the attack and as the Charizard launched the suffocating attack at the Bronzong, the Hypnosis attack was replaced with another strange and powerful wave of psychic energy. The Extrasensory attack focused fully on the ball of smoke and fire, aiming to cause it to detonate early and catch the rest of the raining fire, redirecting the splash around it with the waves of psychic energy colliding with it.
Creating a relatively small safety zone around it, it became apparent to the Bronzong and Ricki that the explosions and fire flying around, combined with the Smoke Screen, had encased the two in a cloud of suffocating smoke. The heat of the flames were enough to make Ricki’s eyes water, but the problem was solved with a pair of goggles she slipped onto her head. As the last of the flames were met with the last of the Extrasensory, Ricki called out with a croak in her voice “Rest, twelve o’ clock!” Within the burning smoke, the Bronzong didn’t hesitate to switch attacks immediately.
With a white ray flying out of the smoke that concealed but mostly blinded Shield and Ricki, Shield had aimed right for the black Charizard before him. As the battle waged on, Ricki struggled to breathe in the smoke around her. She had to tug up the collar of her shirt, slowly stepping back and crouching down to try and find a source of fresh air. When it came to raising Cyndaquil, she would have to take note of being careful to not get too close to his flames, her throat didn’t appreciate the smoke and heat.

At this point, Zernebog wasn’t surprised to see that Ricki made the Bronzong counter the shot. In fact… he was counting on it. The early detonation enabled the smoke to spread over a wider range than it would have if it had struck the bell pokemon head-on. Of course, that also had the effect of sending the superheated smoke particles his way as well, but that was just an unfortunate consequence of his plan.
It was a good thing that he had already anticipated the early detonation because it allowed him to get another bandana from his pocket, wet it with some water from his canteen, and tie it over his face and nose before the smoke managed to obscure his vision as well. Thank goodness he moved fast, or else he might be choking like Richelle girl was probably doing right now!
Still, it didn’t stop his eyes from watering from the smoke. Still, he had experienced this combo before when he had tested it out, so he just had to grit his teeth, bare it, and hope that none of the smoke particles got into his eyes.
“Rest! Twelve o’ clock!” Hearing the rough but recognizable voice of his opponent for the day, Zernebog whistled once and snapped his fingers twice while keeping his head down and his tears inside his eyes.
Above the mass of superheated smoke, Hyperion’s head snapped down as he heard the signal that his trainer sent him. The black Charizard quickly flew to the right, easily dodging the white beam that was aimed at his previous position. He then followed it up by firing another large fireball towards the origin of the beam, which would burst on contact with something solid or if countered.
Hyperion then flew to the other side, making sure not to disturb the smoke and give away his position, and then he fired off another fireball towards the origin of the white beam a few seconds after the first one. It should be cloaked by the smoke or the explosion of flames of the first fireball, which would give it a better chance of passing through and actually hitting that Bronzong.
