{Mission}Title: They Came from the Lake Claimed By: Open Catching: Yes (Hoenn Water's Edge) Members: 1-4 Rewards: •20+ Description: In Petalburg City, there are two large lakes in which many Pokemon reside - normally peaceful sights, they have become trouble for the citizens. For some reason, many Water-Type Pokemon within the lakes have become violent, attacking people, Pokemon, and building alike. While Gym Leader Norman deals with the northeastern lake, you are to deal with the southwestern lake and defeat the Pokemon which are advancing on the town. Then, go into the lake and find whatever is making the Pokemon violent. Be warned: while most of the wild Pokemon are unevolved, there have been sightings of evolved Pokemon among the attackers. Notes: There will be about 3-4 waves of Pokemon showing up, then a last wave of 2 evolved Water's Edge Pokemon, 5 moves each. There is a machine of Team Aqua origin that broke down in the lakes, causing the Pokemon's reactions. Mission-Takers will be required to dive in to find it and remove it.

Olivia took a deep breath as she stepped out of the car that had delivered her at the southwestern lake in Petalburg. She had received word that some water type pokemon were acting overly aggressive and strange, so of course she had to come take a look. As the icon for Team Aqua it would only make sense for her to be interested in the well being of water type pokemon and their habitats, plus it would look good in the public eye if she helped out the groveling citizens of Petalburg. The bitchy brunette had taken a look at the files she was sent over the lake and the pokemon; apparently they were going inland enough to actually attack people in their homes. There wasn't too much she could do about home invasion, even if she cared. It was when she had arrived at the Normal type Gym of Hoenn when things really took a change for the interesting.
Norman, the Gym Leader, was a creep. That wasn't the interesting thing, but it was true and he kept hitting on Olivia. After telling him off, and commenting on his marriage, Olivia finally got the information over the lake that she needed, and a little more. During the reign of Archie over Aqua, some grunts had been seen around the lake she was to inspect, but at the time no one had thought much of it. This was even news to Olivia, considering she had read over all the files on past Aqua missions. There had never been anything over lake activity in Petalburg. It was when Norman mentioned that someone had seen them dumping some kind of machinery did Olivia's interest spark. The creepy Gym Leader continued, saying that some of the local scientist were hypothesizing it was the machine's fault that pokemon were acting so aggressive. A machine created by Team Aqua that had some control over the minds of pokemon... Oh yes, they could use this, or she could at the very least. Olivia thanked the balding man and immediately made her way back towards her car, the chauffeur waiting for her diligently. Pulling out her PokeNav, she quickly scrolled through her contacts to find.. Blythe Lovelace. A new recruit into Team Aqua, done so by Olivia herself, whose skill with technology and inventing said to be beyond what was normal for a girl her age. Which was exactly what Aqua needed to catch up with the modern times. Sending a text to the young inventor, telling her to meet her in Petalburg at the southwestern lake, Olivia ordered the driver to return her to the hotel. It would take a few days for the girl to arrive, if she remembered correctly she lived in Lillycove. With this girl, Olivia would hopefully be able to recover the machinery. Ah yes, Aqua and herself could use this.
If the girl would ever arrive. Perhaps she was too early, but Olivia had given the girl plenty of time to travel here. She sighed and began to tap her foot, her arms crossed, as she waited for Blythe.

Leaving the confines of her house slash laboratory? Preposterous. Exposing herself to the outside world when unnecessary increased her chances of catching some sort of disease like dysentery or telemarketers. One such telemarketer, Olivia, recruited her to something called Team Aqua. Oh well, the inventor thought, as long as they continued to fund her research she didn’t mind. Her latest attempt at creating a death ray made out of a toaster oven and thirteen thousand bobby pins was almost a success, but she needed about a million more bobby pins. She was a scientist, not a miracle worker. Olivia was the miracle worker since she got Blythe to leave her home. Apparently there was a machine that needed her specialized expertise, and with the chance to work with new tech Blythe couldn’t pass up the job. Unfortunately, it was all the way in Petalburg. Petalburg, also known as on the other side of the continent from Lilycove. How in the hell was she going to get there while also minimizing contact with people? She could come into contact with a newlywed romantic couple in their early twenties for Arceus sake! What did Olivia thing she was, impervious to the outside world?
“How in the hell does she expect me to go all the way to Petalburg from Lilycove? I’m a scientist, not an abra.” Blythe groaned before a knock reverberated from the front door. With a snap of her fingers, Spin Doctor the baltoy attended to the guest and chauferred them into the main room. “Don’t step two steps to the right if you want to keep your limbs intact with the rest of your body. No, seriously, there’s a bomb made out of chewing gum and bear traps over there. Won science fair back in the fourth grade. Anyways, who are you and why the hell are you here?” Blythe turned, one working eye glaring at the guest with her arms crossed. He looked stunned, motioning towards the door with a stutter.
“Uh…O-Olivia sent me to get you and take you to Petalburg. With a limo it’ll take about a day’s drive.” Blythe perked up. A limo!? Wow, this woman was as rich and fancy as she seemed last time she dropped by. Well, it wasn’t a perfect solution, but with a limo she could isolate herself and not generate the urge to vomit her lunch and malice upon the populace of Hoenn. She grabbed her three pokeballs and returned all three of her team. Ass Smasher 5000 was working in the back with some scrap metal while Lotibah dozed off in the corner. He was off duty today, anyhow. She waved the grunt off and followed him out the door. Clapping thrice, the door automatically slammed shut and the sound of whirling and buzzing sliced through the air. After a few moments, the noise died down and Blythe squinted at her door. Locked, and only she could get in. Perfect.
“Well, what are we waiting on? Take me to petalburg before I tire of boredom. Roll up the partition as well. Otherwise I’ll vomit on your nice leather seats because of the smell of alcohol and dog urine.” The grunt nodded, jumping into the driver seat with a grumble while Blythe seated herself in the back. She rested her elbow on the armrest and crossed her legs, turning her attention to the moving scenery outside. Maybe she’d come up with a new idea from observing the great outdoors.
Fat chance.
A day later and the limo screeched to a halt inside the city limits. Blythe hopped out immediately, yawning from the nap she took while on the way. The girl didn’t sleep much anyways, so she informed the driver and his seating buddy that they could drive straight there. A stretch and a skip and Blythe was off to the lake. The smell of brackish water played with her nostrils, eliciting a sneeze and groan of disgust from the young girl. Her vision returned shortly after and her focus zoned in directly on Olivia.
“Okay Olivia, I’m here. Where’s the machine? If you were lying to me I’ll make sure to test drive my newest inventions on your slavemonkeys. Hope they like the taste of honey and bee stings on their sensitive regions.” Blythe yawned again, waving it off with her hand. The other rest on her hip, like her faith in humanity. Her hip and her faith in humanity had a lot in common, mostly that they were small and rigid and likely to fail her at an old age. Hopefully her patience for this mission didn’t follow suit.

The limo she had sent for the inventor girl had finally arrived, about an hour late. Oh Olivia would have some choice words to say to those grunts who had driven the young lady across the region. They had one job, and one job only; To get Blythe here on time. Yet they failed at even that! How was she expected to rely on such useless pawns as these. Once they had the funds, and more importantly the members, she would rearrange the structure of the grunts. Most of the ones she had recruited over the past few years were just snot nosed teens itching to rebel against their parents, nature loving freaks who thought the modern world must come to an end, or left over Aqua grunts from Archie's reign. It was a motley menagerie that she had to work with, but it was all she had. That was until recently, of course. Olivia eyed the one eyed inventor, tuning out the vague threats she gave. It was a miracle that Olivia had actually come across her, other wise she would have to hire someone to handle the technology and pay them. The horror! In fact, Blythe was just one of the new members that the brunette temptress had recruited. Team Aqua was slowly getting back on its feet and with that machinery in the lake, they'd be a force to be reckoned with.
At the moment, however, she had to deal with issue at hand. The aggressive pokemon and the chitter chatter of a sixteen year old girl. With a roll of her eyes, Olivia held up her hand as a sign of silence, and said, "It's in the lake, and do keep in mind who is funding those new inventions of yours, dear." Olivia needed to assert her authority, not only as the elder in the situation, but also as the oldest Aqua member. Even if the threats were just jokes, Olivia wanted to make sure the girl knew who her place. Turning so her back was to the girl, she put her hands on her hips and began to speak, "The machine that I spoke of, the one capable of controlling the minds of pokemon, or at the very least infuriating them, is deep within the lake. I'm assuming it's stuck to the bottom of the lake bed. Our objective is to defeat the aggressive pokemon, capture them if you wish, and to retrieve the machine." She looked over the lake for a moment, the sun glittering on the small waves that rippled across the surface, and appreciated the view. The original members of Aqua wished for the entire world to be like this, a fool's thought, but at least she could understand why. Even now, some of the members thought the team was to keep nature as a whole pure and clean, such as how the lake looked now. It didn't matter to her though, as long as she got what she wanted, which at this moment in time was that machine. Olivia turned back to face Blythe, and said, a hand still placed on her hip, "Do you understand? I'm not sure how capable of a trainer you are, but these pokemon shouldn't be too much to handle. As far as retrieving the machine goes, leave it to me. I understand you have strong aversion for nature and the outdoors... I'll dive into the lake, or have one of my pokemon do so, to acquire the machine. Then once it is out on the land, I want you to deactivate it. Is all of this clear?"

Blythe scoffed at Olivia’s disinterest in what she was saying. Her threats were not as empty as the heads of the grunts who drove her here! All she needed to do was make modification to the vacuum cleaner beedrill gun she designed last week and she’d make many an assailant sorry for crossing Blythe Lovelace. Now all she needed was to send Loatibah to collect honey from a combee hive and she’d have it good in the hood! Unfortunately, the hood was located in across the waters in Sinnoh. She’d have to import sweet honey otherwise, and she didn’t make enough money to do that. Mental note to add death honey to the list.
“Buy me large quantities of honey afterwards and I’ll forget about this.” Blythe huffed, taking this chance to listen in to her leader’s instructions. A machine that had the capability to control the minds of pokemon? She made something similar to that back in the third grade, but it only worked for a short amount of time due to a lack of power sources. If she had a solid base foundation to work with, the inventor thought, she could take that machine and earn herself an entire working army! Her one blue eye glinted with mischief.
“Sounds like my third grade pet project. Glad to see someone managed to get that done…times were hard back then. Getting working glue and can openers was tiresome, meddlesome, and required me to physically go dumpster diving. That’s why I have Loatibah do that for me. It’s as we say in the scientific world…grody.” Blythe put air quotes around the last word, rolling her eyes. “As for the pokemon, I’ll battle them if need be. I have three pokemon, but I’m not as accustomed to battle as other trainers. I’m a scientist, not an animal trainer. We’re colleagues, not servant and master.” Blythe’s nose scrunched up, lacing iron and disdain over the last few words. The way some people treated their pokemon like they were beneath them struck a chord with Blythe. She wasn’t the nicest trainer to her pokemon, but she didn’t abuse them or drive them to the point of exhaustion. Well, aside from Spin Doctor, but he enjoyed perpetually spinning anyways. Her pokemon were equal to her, no matter how big or small their job was in her laboratory. Someone helping you with low menial labor meant you were paying them for a skill that you yourself did not have. For that, she viewed her colleagues as equal to her level.
“Glad to see you know my business practices. Getting wet is for small children and exploited sex workers.” Blythe gagged, thinking about diving into the water with her clothes on. This was her nicest pink dress, too, and she didn’t want to ruin it. It wasn’t like she had three hundred or so copies of the same exact outfit in varying shades of pink, but this particular shade was her most favorite of all. Her pink boot tapped against the grass and dirt.
“I’ll let you lead the way oh captain my captain. Try not to splash too much water around, you don’t pay me enough to buy new parts and new clothes.” Blythe’s right hand dug into her dress’s pocket to make sure all three of her pokeballs were there. Sure enough, all three slavemonkeys were accounted for. She could send Ass Smasher 5000 into the water as a last resort, but she had a vague idea of the pokemon Team Aqua employed. If her suspicions were correct, then Olivia had more than enough water pokemon to populate a grandiose aquarium twice over.

Honey. The eccentric inventor wanted honey for some odd reason. It wasn't one of the hardest items to find, just a quick trip to the farmer's market, or if the girl really wanted something fancy, Olivia could send a grunt off to Sinnoh for high quality honey. What would the girl do with it? She had no clue. Were Blythe the average teenage girl exploring what it means to be a woman, Olivia wouldn't have been surprised if the honey was for some exfoliating mask formula that she found online, or to sweeten her tea, maybe even as ingredient for a pastry for her crush. The young woman standing in front of her, however, was not the average teenager. She was missing an eye, wearing a ridiculously pink outfit, and apparently is well versed in the ancient art of dumpster diving. Whatever this inventor wanted, even something as innocent as honey, could be used as a force of destruction and death.
It came as no surprise to Olivia when Blythe confirmed her suspicions about not wanting to get involved with the more physical parts of this mission; The battling and diving. While she was sure the girl could handle herself should the need arise, it would mostly be on her to deal with the aggravated pokemon. The brunette nodded as the girl finished talking, gladly accepting the "captain" title even if it was a joke, and said, "Then it seems we're on the same level. I'll handle the pokemon best I can, if I were you I would keep one of your own out just in case, and go get the machine when I have a chance." Hopefully, the whole thing would be over with quickly and wouldn't require too much battling. Olivia wanted to get to work on that machine as soon as possible.
The pokemon of the lake, however, didn't see an easy time as something in Olivia's future. Emerging from the lake with a burst of water, an assortment of Poliwag and Poliwhirl began spraying water everwhere. There was about four in total and the two closest to Olivia seemed pissed. Royally and utterly pissed. As she pulled out one of her own pokeballs, releasing Eione the Chinchou, she noted that the eyes of the angered pokemon were glowing red with some unnatural energy. "Probably an effect of the machine.", Olivia thought as she backed up a little to put some space in between her and the soon to be battle. With her attention focused on the pokemon before her, she wouldn't be able to see what the other two would be doing to Blythe, but the girl probably had some tricks under her sleeve, or at least Olivia hoped so for her sake. Watching as the two tadpole pokemon fired off water guns at.. Olivia! The pokemon weren't even after the small lantern pokemon but rather its trainer. "Discharge!" She shouted, rolling the the left and out of the way of the water attacks. Eione sprung into action, launching two rays of electricity to meet the water guns, the electrical current traveling down the water and into the bodies of the two water type pokemon. Spazzing out from the shock, the Chinchou repeated the attack in a different variation, this time touching her two sparking antennae to the bodies of the pokemon, the surge of electricity even stronger from direct contact.
Dusting herself off from the roll, Olivia produced two miniaturized pokeballs, quickly expanding the until they were full size with a simple press of a button. Personally, she didn't see much use in these pokemon, but that didn't mean some future members of Aqua wouldn't. At the very least, they would be able to use them for test dummies of the machine once they retrieved it. Olivia dropped the two pokeballs on the stunned and paralyzed pokemon, the capture devices causing a swirling light to come out and capture the pokemon before returning to the ball and beginning the everlasting tick.

Catch attempt on 2 poliwag

Blythe shrugged at her orders, having no reason to disobey her. While her personality was disagreeable at best, she didn’t stray too far towards anarchy. As long as the systems and rules in place didn’t inhibit her desires and personal freedoms she had no problem playing along with the game. In this case, the rules lined up perfectly with her game plan. Ah, games. Toying around with this machine excited her. She could feel like she was back in the third grade again trying to outdo her science fair competitors. Too bad she almost killed one with one of her contraptions and went to juvenile detention for it, but it was only second degree burns! Only second degree.
“Aye aye. Ass Smasher 5000, we’ve got asses to smash. Didn’t name ‘ya that because I was trying to be edgy. What do I look like, a scene kid from ten years ago? Fat chance.” With that, the inventor tossed one of her pokeballs out to reveal her octillery. For a mess of gangly limbs and large suckers, Ass Smasher 5000 seemed rather poised and collected with the way he folded his frontal tentacles together as if he were a butler in a rich mansion. His name didn’t reflect on his personality and nature in the slightest.
That didn’t mean his capabilities with smashing were, as they say, “ass.”
“It looks like there’s a mess I have to take care of. Another set of unruly ruffians, I take it?” Octillery spoke to his trainer, Blythe not understanding a lick of what he said but grabbing the gist. She’d been around the world, but she didn’t speak the language. Thankfully, the octillery didn’t need explaining. What did need explaining, however, was the orders needed for taking down the two poliwags that now encircled them.
All it took was a snap of her fingers.
“Smash.” Octillery’s neutral and stiff stance suddenly altered to a more fluid one. The octillery’s free arm lashed out at the poliwag’s tail and put a vice grip on it. The tadpole charged up a water gun and fired it directly at Ass Smasher’s face, but it wasn’t very effective. Actually, it was laughably ineffective. “Gunk Shot. Put it six feet under.” Another snap of Blythe’s fingers and the victimized water pokemon found its entire body covered with purple ooze. Ass Smasher 5000 waited no time at all for its namesake to come in handy, blasting an instantly unconscious poliwag back from whence it came. There’s no such thing as overkill. Only “open fire” and “I have to reload” in Blythe’s book.
The second target was far sneakier, spraying its water gun directly at Blythe. She didn’thave the gusto or drive to roll out of the way, but a small side step managed to take her to safety. Well, almost. The left bottom ribbon of her shoe got struck by the water gun and soaked. Only the ribbon. Blythe was having none of this tomfoolery. Her good eye twitched, growl formulating in her throat and reaching a boiling point. “No one ruins my clothes, especially not something that’s more useful as caviar! Ass Smasher 5000! Gunk shot!” Blythe shouted her commands with venom lacing her words. Her colleague Ass Smasher 5000 wasted no time following her order, aiming for the horn and firing off a purple ball of ooze at the second poliwag. These pokemon, mind controlled as they were, weren’t sturdy enough to put up with a fully evolved Octillery’s gunk shot. Unlike the first victim, however, this one squealed in a high pitch voice before collapsing onto the ground fainted. Blythe was irritable, but not vindictive. The body could lay there for all she cared. An irritated sigh followed her temporary victory.
“These pokemon must be young if they can’t even take more than one gunk shot. Captain, their eyes showed signs of vacancy and listlessness in their movements. What I can deduce from this is either they suffer from insomnia, are on some sort of narcotic, or the machine in question is definitely nestled away under the lake. You take your pick on which possibility you like better. The narcotics one is my favorite.” Blythe snarked, glancing over with her only eye to see if Ass Smasher 500 was okay. Sure enough, his idle task was to clean the excess ooze off of his tentacles into the water. A gentleman must be presentable at all times if possible. Blythe shrugged it off. His personal business was not her business.

The pokeballs dinged, signalling the successful capture of the two Poliwag. Olivia let out a sigh of relief and went over to pick them up, glancing over to see how Blythe was handling the pokemon. She truly hadn't meant for it to get like this, her original plan to handle all of the battling having failed, and the eccentric inventor ended up having to battle the tadpole pokemon. Surprisingly, the one eyed girl was capable at handling the two baby pokemon, her Octillery armed with powerful attacks. One of the Poliwag had apparently gone for the same tactic as the ones she had faced, attacking the trainer rather than the pokemon. Blythe had been less dramatic about the whole thing, choosing to simply take a step to the side in order to dodge the attack, but she apparently got wet by some of the spray, unveiling a side Olivia had never seen. Fueled by fury, Blythe ordered her pokemon, appropriately named Ass Smasher 5000, to attack the Poliwag that had gotten her wet. Olivia winced as the small water type was left there to dry out, but didn't say anything about it. The most impressive part about her skirmish between the pokemon was how much she was able to deduce simply from battling it.
Picking up the two pokeballs, Olivia pocketed one and approached Blythe with the other in hand. She tossed it to the ground in front of her, not hard enough to release the fainted pokemon, but enough so it landed snugly between the girl's feet. "Well done with the battle, your pokemon is impressive to say the least; however, I was most impressed by your ability to analyze the symptoms of the pokemon and deduce some hypotheses over what could have caused it. For this reason, you will be taking care of that pokemon." Olivia said, pointing at the pokeball in question. She continued, saying, "You are to analyze the effects the machine has on it by training it, evolving it, and general maintenance of it. Understood?" The brunette returned her attention back to the lake, scanning it for any potential aggressive pokemon, after saying what she had to to the girl. Olivia seriously doubted she would refuse her orders, even more so for the fact that she would most like enjoy the thrill of experimenting on the poor tadpole pokemon.
With her eyes overlooking the farther regions of the lake, Olivia didn't see the lilypad that seemed to move on their own towards the lake shore. Eione was more aware of the incoming enemy, and launched a beam of multicolored energy from her antennae, causing a shriek to come from one of the pokemon. "What the hell was that?!" Olivia yelled, taking a step back out of potential harm's way. From the lake, a larger group of Lotads and Lombre emerged, their eyes matching those of the Poliwag from earlier. Sighing, Olivia produced another pokeball, her Azurill looking up at her through the see through encasing of the ball with her big doll eyes. She released the cute water type, allowing Calypso to get some action. There would be no need for Blythe's help in this battle if she could help it.
Snapping her fingers, Olivia called out to her pokemon, "E, rinse and repeat; Calypso, go sky high!" The Chinchou let a few sparks fall from her antennae, showing she understood, before releasing another multicolored beam of energy at the Lotad from earlier. The signal beam hit its mark, and Calypso used her bubble like tail to bounce into high into the air, giving her an aerial view of the battle scene below. That was, of course, until the Lombre leading the charge summoned a rain storm. Her vision blurred, the little blue ball went hurling down back towards the earth, her tail leading the way as it glowed with energy. Smack! The Azurill's tail made contact with a Lotad, sending it through the air and at Olivia's feet. The woman gave her small pokemon a thumbs up before dropping a pokeball on the Lotad and then throwing one at the one that had been hit by the signal beams from earlier. With those balls ticking, she returned her attention to the battle. The Lombre had began swirling its hands together, and as it did so, a thick mist fell from its hands, enveloping the entire area. Olivia cursed under her breath and yelled, hoping Blythe could hear her over the heavy rain fall, "Be careful, Blythe! We need to take that Lombre out if we want to get these Lotad out of the way!" While she had been speaking, Calypso had once again taken to the sky, unable to see from the thick rain clouds and heavy mist that surrounded everyone. She was about to randomly guess when a blast of light showed her one of the targets. The Chinchou's signal beam had hit one of the Lotad, resulting in a brief flash of light that was enough for Calypso to land a bounce attack as well. The combined force was enough to knock out the small lilypad pokemon, temporarily at least. Suddenly, a ball of green energy came forth from the mist and struck the Azurill, sending her into the Chinchou.
Olivia could hear pokemon grunting and attacking, but she had no idea if it was hers that were being attacked or attacking...

The last thing Blythe Lovelace wanted to do was nurture some pokemon that was of no use to her. So, when Olivia phrased it as if the pokemon were something to observe and study, Blythe grit her teeth together in painful thought. On one hand, that was another mouth to feed around the lab and someone who she’d have to teach all the ins and outs of lab safety. On the other hand, finding out what made pokemon susceptible to mind control would be invaluable for both her mechanical advancements and the goals and ambitions of her superiors.
She couldn’t say no. Blasted Olivia.
“My battling skills are done through observation, though I wouldn’t say I employ the ability too often. It makes you hot, sweaty, and like a caveman bleating as he beats his chest. It’s barbaric but occasionally necessary in the world we live in. As for the pokemon…” Blythe sighed, extending her hand out and pocketing the pokeball with one of the poliwags inside. Like hell if she needed to take more than one or wanted to take more than one in the first place. For this experiment, one test subject would suffice for adequate data and information. “Understood, oh captain my captain. I’ll dress it up in cute little dresses, do its nails, talk about boys, you know, things girls my age are supposed to do according to the system that tries to sell me makeup and beauty products that I don’t want to buy. Seriously, green eye shadow? Do you want to look like someone vomited on your eyelids? I don’t. I have more important things to take care of.” Blythe rambled on with a scoff. The rambling turned into rumbling. The rumbling turned into more pokemon emerging from the depths of the lake. Like her superior, Blythe jumped backwards two steps. She didn’t have time for this.
“Lotads and a lombre? Oh joy, good thing I brought this along.” With that, Blythe reached under her dress and pulled out a frilly pink umbrella. Just in case she ever got caught in the rain, a girl was always prepared. She opened it, holding it over her own head without considering of Olivia or any other parties. They got her into this mess, they could stand getting a little bit wet. “Ass Smasher 5000, reinitialize smashing protocol. Kick their ass.” Ass Smasher 5000, who previously was cleaning himself off to the side in the river, spring back into action with Olympic level sprinting. Prefontaine, eat your heart out.
“They’re weak to poison, gunk shot.” Blythe pointed at one of the lilypad pokemon, Ass Smasher 5000 launching a blast of disgusting ooze forth from his mouth once again to damage one of the mind-controlled pokemon. Sure enough, upon inspection from Blythe, their eyes glowed a faint red from the machine below. At this rate, how were the two going to get enough breathing room to even fetch the machine? They’d have to clear out the entire lake! They couldn’t send a water pokemon to break the machine either or it might become unsalvageable. Unsalvageable, bleh, Blythe hated that word. In her world, nobody or nothing was unsalvageable. Her free arm rapped its fingers against her arm occupied with her umbrella. The blast connected. Super effective on the baby pokemon and one lotad was out of the way. She’d leave the body on the ground in case Olivia wanted to capture it. Ugh, she hated battling. Ugh, she also hated the prospect of expanding her household’s occupancy from four to six. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
Sure enough, the ringleader of these pokemon called down a rainstorm. Rain Dance wasn’t an uncommon move, but it was one of the lotad’s line’s signature moves. She felt the pressure of the rainstorm hit her umbrella, wind howling. She kept her stance firm and her grip like iron. She wasn’t getting wet. No way.
Mist wasn’t in her calculations. Damn it. At least there was only one lotad and one lombre left. Her vision of everything going on dissipated into nil. She reached into her dress pocket to grab another pokemon, tapping it against the ground and summoning forth Loatibah the trubbish. Loatibah wasn’t a word she made up, rather, it was an acronym. Lord Of All That Is Beautiful And Holy. That was his full name, because trash and parts were what made the world go ‘round, but Blythe settled with “Loatibah” for short.
“Loatibah, the mist and rain here are insufferable. I’ll need you to wipe out the opposition. Gunk shot, help out Ass Smasher 5000!” Loatibah cried happily, bouncing into the mist to look for the main troublemaker. Two pokemon left, Blythe counted from the amount taken down so far, and she’d have to play needle in the haystack.
“Open fire, gunk shot everything! Just don’t aim backwards!” Blythe called out to both her pokemon. Ass Smasher 5000 and Loatibah charged up their poison attacks, launching the forward into the mist. Sure enough, both of the attacks missed spectacularly. When no successful results were given, like any good experiment, they tried again with a different hypothesis. In this case, aiming in another direction.
Lombre wasn’t inhibited by the rain and mist, unfortunately, so sneaking up behind Loatibah and blasting him with water gun was easy as pie. Loatibah cried out, Blythe gritting her teeth. She was blind to the damage being done, but she heard the faint cries of her colleagues over the hot mess happening on Petalburg’s lake.
Loatibah turned around and blasted the Lombre with gunk shot, doing super-effective damage. It cried out in pain, but wasn’t done yet thanks to the rain giving it a boost in power. This was bad.
“Loatibah, toxic spikes! Inhibit their movement.” Loatibah faintly heard his trainer’s command, lacing the ground around him and Blythe with protective poison spikes. The battle was just getting started, but at least Blythe had a buffer against anyone trying to attack her.

The sound of a Lotad being blasted by a powerful attack was music to her ears, that was one less pokemon she would have to deal with. Unfortunately, she couldn't see anything in the thick mist and heavy rain that surrounded them. It wasn't that Olivia didn't trust in her pokemon's abilities to handle themselves, but the remaining Lotad and Lombre were infuriated, and it would take more than a few attacks to know them out. To her right, Olivia heard Blythe shouting out orders, her own pokemon setting up a barrier around themselves of Toxic Spikes. At least the girl was safe, at the moment, from any more harm that could possibly come her way. Holding her hand above her eyes to block the rain that was pouring down on them and give her some vision, Olivia shouted, hoping her own pokemon could hear her, "Focus the Lombre! Signal Beam and Bounce!"
The small blue pokemon mewed, the energy ball from earlier having damaged Calypso quite a bit; however, her ears perked up at Olivia's voice. She bounced high into the air, using her tail to do so, and looked down below for her signal to come down. As the Azurill bounced high into the air, the Chinchou got up and looked for the Lombre through the mist. Then, a thought occurred to Eione, and she acted upon it. She released a powerful blast of electricity around her with the use of Discharge, causing the mist in the area to be dispelled and reveal the Lombre and remaining Lotad. The leaf pokemon let forth a ball of green energy towards the enemy while the Lombre hurriedly tried to prepare more mist, but it was too late. Calypso had seen the pokemon and headed forth towards the already damaged Lombre with the bounce, and landed it, knocking the pokemon out. The Chincho, on the other hand, used a quick blast of Discharge to counter the energy ball and followed with a signal beam, downing the last and final Lotad.
As the Lombre went down, the mist around them cleared, revealing everyone to one another. Olivia quickly went towards her pokemon to check for damage, while calling out to Blythe, "Well done, inventor! However, these pokemon seem to get more and more aggressive as they come from the lake. Any idea as to how I can actually get down there?" Olivia wasn't stupid by any means, and already had a plan forming, but she would like to hear how the eccentric scientist would do so.

Thank god Olivia was around, though Blythe would never say that aloud ever. Battling wasn’t her weakest subject, but fighting with her pokemon was definitely not where her comfort zone lie. Her defense was secured, and any pokemon having to attack her, Loatibah, and Ass Smasher 5000 were going to have to deal with a layer of poison-tipped barbs. She couldn’t say the same for Olivia, however, nor could she speculate on just how many pokemon were in this lake. Pokemon like magikarp, for example, congregated in large schools. They weren’t effective pokemon by themselves, but if a horde of magikarp ganged up on them in a rush maneuver then…
Blythe feared even a layer of spikes wouldn’t buffer the storm. She’d get blown away just like everything else.
While Olivia checked her pokemon for damage, Blythe followed in suit. She observed Loatibah to see if he sustained any damage, and to her suspicions he was winded from the boosted water gun attack. Ass Smasher 5000, however, was raring to go like a well-oiled machine. Blythe did have a soft spot for him amongst her pokemon given that he was one of her late father’s most trustworthy pokemon, but that was another thing on her list of inward observations. This wasn’t the time to get sentimental or mushy with her colleagues. They weren’t her pets. Colleagues.
“Loatibah and Ass Smasher 5000 are in satisfactory condition, though Loatibah took a direct hit from a water attack. Just stay behind Ass Smasher 5000, alright? Can’t have you disabled for too long. Someone’s gotta go dumpster diving right? Sure as hell wouldn’t be me.” Blythe masked her concern thinly, and Loatibah picked up on it. He simply nodded to her orders, but inwardly felt elated that she took notice of him. It was rare to see this side of his trainer, even though she didn’t like calling herself one unless necessary.
Outside of her pokemon was the problem of reaching the machine. Too many variables were unaccounted for. How many pokemon were there left? How deep was the lake? How heavy was the machine? They’d need to send a water pokemon to scout. It was the safest bet. She didn’t know how many pokemon Olivia had, but her only functioning water type was Ass Smasher 5000. Blythe needed him on the defensive frontlines.
“Send a water pokemon down there to scout out the area and report back. We need to know how big this machine is and how many pokemon there are in the lake. If it’s too deep, tell the ‘mon to swim back to the safety of the surface. If it’s a heavy machine we’re going to need to clear out the pokemon in the lake. If it’s light, try to get some pokemon to fetch it. Otherwise, we’re what we scientists like to call massively boned.” Blythe shouted back to Olivia. She choose not to weigh in on the congratulatory thanks until their job was truly done. There was no possibly way a lake of this size only had ten pokemon living in it or around it. Besides, who knew exactly how far the influence of the machine reached? There could be pokemon who lived on the fringes of the lake ready to ambush the duo at any time. There was more risk than Blythe initially calculated.
