Rolling her eyes slightly at Zernebog’s commentary, she gave a brief sarcastic ‘ha ha’ in retort, before reaching for Nibbler’s jaws to try and pry his mouth open. The Totodile didn’t budge, nor did he tighten his grip, merely just tensing his muscles to keep Ricki from opening his mouth. Ricki was about to cut off Zernebog herself when something else suddenly beat her to the point. She looked away from the Totodile to watch Ziggy and Hera tumble over due to the tackle of the Eevee and she couldn’t help but laugh at the fumble.
Her laugh trailed off at Zernebog’s order to Hera and she slowly shook her head. After the last violent display, she really didn’t feel like watching another unnecessarily brutal attack. Her focus turned back to the Totodile holding her hostage and once more she pulled at his jaw. “Nibbler, let go.”
Nope.
“Nibbler” she spoke, her tone warning him of potential trouble.
A little looser.
“You’re about to lose your lunch. Let go.”
Yoink, the totodile’s jaws snapped open to release Ricki’s hand. No cuts, no breakage of the skin, just deep imprints that would fade in minutes, that was good, he was controlling himself a lot better now. She reached up to gently pat his head, before returning the nippy Pokémon to his pokeball. She started to get back up, hooking the pokeball to her belt when the sounds of the nearby beating finally caught her ears. She merely glanced over at the fight, before turning to shoot a look at Zernebog. Really? Really?
When the Electabuzz moved to cling to Zernebog’s leg in an affectionate manner once more, Ricki’s disappointed look changed to a mildly disturbed gaze. Once Zernebog began apologizing, Ricki just held up her hands in a clear declaration of wanting nothing to do with the bipolar Electabuzz. “Don’t apologize to me, just get her PMSing bipolar psychotic-ness under control bro” she ordered, turning on her heel to start walking off with, or without, Zernebog. She moved to step onto the KO’d Lapras’s back and hop over it to continue along the path they had been going before the swarm appeared. “Let’s get moving, this area isn’t showing much pro—” just as she was about to get the last word out, Ricki suddenly had to duck down to avoid the tackle of a little sneaky leafy snake.
She whirled around with an unamused glare at the Snivy now scurrying along the brush, taking advantage of the camoflauge the area provided. “... Isn’t showing much promise” she repeated, starting to get back up on her feet. She thought for a moment as her eyes followed after the Snivy scurrying along the leaves, before turning to start off. The Snivy continued to follow them for a ways, and Ricki knew at this rate, Zernebog would probably send the Electabuzz or something after it. As they walked, she simply dropped a pokeball and released her Quilava. “Just get it to buzz off” she instructed, pointing to where the Snivy was. The Quilava’s flames ignited in excitement and immediately the little fire devil took off into the leaves.
As fire and grass went flying out of sight, Ricki continued along the path, knowing the Quilava would catch up on his own. Which he did in record time, trotting up to her as his flames briefly grew in size to burn off the last of the pieces of plants that clung to his coat. When he got to Ricki’s side, she continued her stride along while leaning over to pluck a few things from the Pokémon’s back. “Good boy” she praised, before rising back up. While he didn’t put on a show for Zernebog and herself, he got rid of a pest and they could move on to possibly more interesting finds in the Zone.
By The Way; Passing on Snivy ( 5 / 8 ) Sorry for not detailing the battle between Quilava and Snivy. Just know, it was a heated battle, badumtish. Also, say hi to Cinder~

There was just something utterly disturbing about the way Hera was behaving right now. She was acting more irrational than the goddess she was named after when the latter was on one of her jealous rages, and that was saying something! While he had seen bloodier from some of his other pokemon, the undisciplined and unbridled display of rage that Hera displayed twice was unacceptable.
PMSing bipolar Electabuzz, huh? Maybe Ricki was onto something with that comment of hers. Not with the bipolar because he knew what the Electabuzz was like normally, but the PMS….
Before he was able to do anything about it though, Ricki began trying to leave the spot they were standing on, forcing him to start coaxing Hera off of his leg so that they could catch up. Just as he managed to coax Hera off of his leg though, a green blur suddenly tried to tackle his friend, though she managed to duck down in time.
”Uh huh.” Zernebog stared at the Snivy that assaulted his friend with half-lidded eyes while ignoring the sudden pang in his chest as he remembered his old Snivy. May you rest in peace.
”I can see that.” Zernebog deadpanned as he followed after her, gesturing for his possibly-homicidal Electabuzz to follow behind him. He didn’t question it when Ricki left the Snivy alone. Frankly, he was actually thankful that he didn’t have to deal with it or anything, because while he was more than sure that Hera was up for another bout of irrational bloodthirsty rage to beat down whatever was in her way, he wasn’t ready to face a haunting reminder of the shadows he was trying to run from.
Unfortunately, Zernebog could still spot the bright red eyes through the leaves even though he was trying his best to ignore them. Sometimes training oneself to spot the out-of-place things in an environment due to job requirements sucked. That was why he was so relieved then Ricki was the one who went to deal with the Snivy. It saved him the time and the effort to do so himself.
Once the Quilava started dealing with the problem earlier, Zernebog stared at his seemingly-calm Electabuzz for a few moments before coming to a decision. ”Okay Hera. It’s time for you to rest in the ball, alright?”
Hera looked like she was about to argue, but seeing the stern look on Zernebog’s face made any protest die in her throat. She had been with him long enough to know that arguing was futile when he had that face on, even though she just wanted to go back hugging his leg. Besides, she didn’t want to have to deal with his disciplinary committee. Those three gave her the shivers. Not even hormonal rage could get rid of that indoctrinated fear. So she just nodded.
Zernebog paused for a moment in order to recall Hera back into her pokeball and then place said ball back onto his belt. Once that was done, he continued to follow behind Ricki in contemplative silence. It didn’t take long for his mind to return to mulling over the things he had been thinking on during the start of this trek.
He was so preoccupied with his thoughts that he didn’t notice when the Quilava came back soon after he caught up. In fact, he didn’t seem to be noticing anything else out of his surroundings at all until he heard something that sounded so eerily familiar that it made him snap out of his internal debate.
“CRANIDOS!”
Zernebog froze, his eyes going wide as they snapped onto a heartwrenchingly-familiar form. He knew that there had always been a chance for him to encounter one of them, but he’d always pushed the possibility in the darkest recesses of his mind, foolishly thinking that it would never happen. That the ghosts would stay locked up in his mind, where they belonged.
And yet here he was, with the blood draining from his face as he stared down those accusing red eyes with a wide-eyed stare. “Cranidos!” It bellowed angrily as it stared him down, his eyes burning brighter as he tried burning holes into his head as best as he could.
He was here. Was this real life? Zernebog swallowed. He had to get rid of it. Wipe away his sins. Cover it with more blood.
Gold eyes hardened as he composed himself, stamping down on the turmoil within. ”It’s my turn. I’ll take care of this one.” Even to his own ears, his voice sounded faint. Yet there was an unusual sharpness in there as he finally matched the Cranidos’ stare with one of his own.
Zernebog grabbed the first pokeball he could grab from his belt, uncaring as to who it might contain, and released the pokemon. To his credit, Zernebog didn’t even flinch when he released a pokemon that had a distinct type disadvantage against the pokemon he wanted to get rid of. Specifically, Echo, his Zubat, who was just flapping her wings around, looking as curious and confused as a blind bat would be out in daylight.
In fact, he didn’t even hesitate. ”Echo. Gnaw on the little rock, would you?” He said with a note of humor in his voice that wasn’t reflected in his eyes. ”Your teeth should be tough enough.”
The Cranidos seemed to take personal offense to his statement and tried to immediately stop his plans by jumping high up into the air and trying to smash into Echo with a Headbutt. In response, Echo dodged to the left with ease and sunk her teeth into the still-airborne Cranidos with an extremely powerful bite. Super Fang, to be precise.
“CRA?!” The Cranidos managed to wrench itself free from the Zubat’s vicious jaws, though now there were prominent puncture holes in its tough side, as can be seen from the blood dripping off of the Zubat’s mouth.
”Again, Echo.” Zernebog gazed hard at the Cranidos, forcing himself not to slide back into shock again.
This time though, the Cranidos was prepared. The Zubat was about to bite the creature with a Poison Fang when the Cranidos suddenly slammed full-force into the Zubat’s gut with a powerful Head Smash, sending the Zubat careening towards the trees and itself away from the two trainers, the former disappearing towards the thick brush and the latter hitting a bunch of huge rocks.
The Cranidos itself staggered, the damage from both the Super Fang and its own attack taking a very heavy toll on its body. However, now it believed that it had won, so now it was staggering towards Zernebog, intent on taking him down with it as well with another Head Smash. Nothing was going to stop it now!
…Except apparently a bright beam of light that suddenly struck it in the side a few heartbeats before it reached, ripping away the remainder of its energy in a flash, forcing it to trip and stumble, rolling until its now-unconscious body hit Zernebog’s feet with a hard thud.
A powerful shriek sounded through the air as a small blue and purple form shot out of the foliage, revealing Echo’s form. Said Zubat looked horribly battered and injured, but it was still conscious all things considered, so Zernebog was glad for that.
”Echo.” Zernebog smiled. ”You’re okay~”
Echo simply smiled at him tiredly before perching on his shoulder with a tired huff. She then nudged a wing at his head and then pointed at the downed Cranidos.
”….” Zernebog stared at Echo and then at the Cranidos with an unreadable expression. He did that a couple more times before the guilt and the need to atone –along with the subtle nudges from his Zubat- finally won him over enough.
”I’ll take this one.” Zernebog muttered as he threw his Safari ball at the creature and hoped that it was enough to catch it.
As the Snivy would be dealt with, Ricki would notice a rather peculiar silence from her friend. She glanced back towards him as she continued along their trail before looking back ahead. She wasn’t going to pry, but if the silence went on for too long, she would at that point. He was lost in thought and part of her almost predicted him being the one that’d be targeted by the next thing that would try to come their way. Ricki glanced down at Cinder, who met her gaze with a curious look. A smile at her Quilava was the last thing she did before the silence was broken by the cry of a Pokémon.
Ricki stopped in her tracks and turned to look over at the Cranidos breaking from the foliage. Ricki grinned at the sight and looked over at Zernebog, only for her grin to falter when she saw the look on his face. That was a look she hadn’t seen before, like he was looking at a ghost of sorts. Ricki opened her mouth to ask if he was alright, only to manage the beginning of a word being cut off by herself when Zernebog spoke up. She shut up at that point, stepping back slightly to let Zernebog deal with the Pokémon. Something was significantly off here, and she knew it. She returned Cinder to his pokeball to keep him out of the way.
She shifted uneasily, watching Zernebog bring out a Zubat, a peculiar choice given the Pokémon they had to deal with, but typing wasn’t everything. In her own battle with Ramona a few months back, Rep had taken down her trustee Blaziken, despite the super effective attacks that had been sent his way. The moment the blind bat had its bearings, Zernebog gave out orders in that humorous tone once more, but his voice didn’t match his stance. While Zernebog was intent on the battle, Ricki’s gaze settled on him in concern.
She’d never really been the touchy-feely when it came to her friends, always uncomfortable to really get sentimental when there was an audience. Even behind closed doors, she’d been bad at dealing with unnerving emotions of her own, or within someone else, so quite frankly she tried to avoid dealing with it. Zernebog wasn’t much of the emotional type, much to Ricki’s relief. He was a snarky nonchalant bastard who usually rolled with the punches, but as he dealt with Cranidos, she could tell something was off. So, it was simply a matter of whether or not she wanted to ask him about it.
Her focus was suddenly torn from Zernebog to the battle when she saw the little bat be sent flying. She grimaced at the sight, and started to step in the direction the bat had gone, only to see the Cranidos wasn’t down yet. In fact, it was charging right at Zernebog but it was only mere seconds before a light would flash from where Echo had vanished to. Hitting the Cranidos and keelhauling it in one mighty blow. Damn, that was a powerful little Zubat, managing that much power despite the obvious injuries she sported.
As Zernebog lightened up with the sight of his Zubat being okay, Ricki began to approach the duo, her gaze drifting down to the Cranidos curiously. As his gaze shot between bat and fallen Pokémon, Ricki was all but ready to tell him that if he wanted it, he should catch it. Some nudging from Echo seemed to give him the hint though, and finally Zernebog threw the Safari Ball down at the creature. It was only a few seconds before it clicked in a confirmation of a successful catch, but before Zernebog could kneel down to pick the ball up, Ricki was beating him to it. She tossed it up lightly, as if judging its weight, before turning to him and offering the ball.
When he was about to take it from her, she tossed it up to catch it in her other hand, knowing now she got his attention. “You okay?” she questioned, figuring she might as well ask. “The moment this guy appeared, you got all…” she trailed off to try and think of the word as she grabbed Zernebog’s wrist with her free hand and slapped the Safari Ball into his hand. “… You looked like you saw a ghost is the best way I can put it” she sighed. She let him go and tugged her bag slightly onto her shoulder, offering an awkward shrug. “Not sayin’ ya gotta tell me but… If you want to talk about it?” she tacked on, slowly starting to walk off once more, waiting to see if he’d follow or head off now that he had his own Pokemon. Once he reached his decision, she smoothly slid into a casual stride.
Pushing on along the path, the trail would guide them right along to a large lake in the midst of the Zone. Well, this explained the Lapras at least, it must have been travelling between water sources or something. Plus, water holes were a good spot to find a lot of wild things running about, since water was a necessary nutrient. Still caked in dirt that had been only slightly disturbed by the rains and water of the Lapras from earlier, the sight of the water was a bit of a blessing. Tugging her bag from her shoulder, once she reached the edge of the water, she dropped her bag onto the ground beside her and knelt down. Cupping the fresh chilly water into her hands, she brought it up to splash her face, running off some more of the dirt in the process. Granted, the act only made her neck itch more, it at least relieved her face some.
As she wiped the drops from her eyes, the sound of something moving fast through the water made her head slowly rise up. Immediately her head snapped up right before she flopped back into the muddy bank as Tirtouga and Turtle Jet zoomed right over head. The turtle using an Aqua Jet flew through the air to slide to a stop on the bank with an angry chattering at Ricki. She just laid in the mud, though, blinking a few times as she tried to process just what happened. Well, that was… Close. She didn’t even look back at Zernebog, eyes on the sky as she mumbled “You got that, right? Right.”

Once the Safari ball stopped rocking, Zernebog watched as Ricki beat him to the ball on the floor and picked it up. He thought nothing of it and simply went to take the Safari ball from her hands, only to be stopped when she suddenly flicked it up in the air and spoke, confirming something that made his stomach drop.
She noticed.
But then, given how much he had lost control over his reaction over the sight of the blue and gray pokemon, he supposed it was inevitable that she would notice. However, this wasn’t a topic he was ready to discuss with anyone in the foreseeable future. Or maybe ever, if he had his way with it. Ricki didn’t know what he had done and experienced after she left Arcane, and it was better that way. Some skeletons deserve to remain in the closet where they belong, rotting away in the dark.
Zernebog was quiet for a few moments as he steeled himself, simply staring at her with a blank expression before putting on a fake smirk. ”Nah. It’s not that interesting. I don’t wanna bore you to death with that story.”
A complete and utter lie that sounded flat to his ears, but better than admitting the truth he supposed.
Now that he had a pokemon, he could actually leave right now and avoid further questioning. However, he wasn’t a coward. Besides, he wanted to see what kind of pokemon Ricki would catch in here and he won’t let something like one of the skeletons in his closet peeking out stop him from continuing to tag along. But first thing’s first.
”Time to rest now, Echo.” Zernebog muttered as he glanced at his battered and bruised Zubat, who smiled at him thankfully as he pointed his pokeball at her and recalled her back to it. ”You did enough.”
Once Echo was secured into her pokeball, Zernebog caught up with Ricki, who was walking slowly for some reason. Probably to wait for him or something. Instead of starting up conversation again though, he just kept quiet and observed the surroundings quietly. He was still hoping that Ricki would drop her line of questioning and maybe the adage Out of sight, out of mind would work in this instance, and not just for her.
Eager to find something to distract himself with from the previous topic, Zernebog’s eyes began to wander, drinking in the sight of the mostly untouched forest as they walked along the path. It didn’t take those same eyes to stop the massive lake that had come up upon the path, making him raise an eyebrow. Well… this explained a lot of things. Like that Lapras and Piplup.
He paused for a second to marvel at it, which was enough time to see Ricki make a beeline for the lake’s shoreline and start pouring water over herself in an attempt to clean the dirt she had collected on herself off. He was going to make a sarcastic quip about her being dirtier than that before and how lady-like she was being, only to stop in the middle of opening his mouth when he saw something moving through the water like a missile.
Normally he wouldn’t have given a damn, but since it was heading towards a currently mostly-blinded Ricki he immediately reached for one of the pokeballs on his belt and released the pokemon within. His pokemon materialized out from the bright light just in time to see Ricki flop onto her back right before a blue and black blur hit her.
Zernebog stared at strange blue turtle, waiting to make sure that it was fully distracted with Ricki before crouching down to his eager Drilbur.
”Give it one hell of a hit, Atlas.” Zernebog whispered to his Drilbur with a shark-like smirk beginning to emerge from his face. Just what he needed. A beat-down.
In response, Atlas grinned and jumped into the air, then pointed his arms forward and started spinning around like a drill as he headed towards the Tirtouga. Said turtle was about to bite down on Ricki when it was suddenly blindsided by an extremely painful spinning projectile, causing it to fly off and slam into a huge boulder near the lake shoreline with a powerful thud that created many small cracks along the rock’s surface.
A second after that, Atlas disengaged from the turtle and rolled away from a retaliatory crunch from the water pokemon’s beak. He gave the turtle a cheeky smirk as he ducked down and rubbed his claws together and sharpened them, as if taunting it to give him its best shot.
In response, the Tirtouga pulled himself out from the rock and tried to charge at him with an Aqua Jet, only to miss as the Drilbur took to the ground and disappeared in a hole. This forced the Tirtouga to stop and cool its jets –pun intended-, settling back down on the ground as he began to look for the missing the missing Drilbur.
Said Drilbur was sharpening his claws again as he quietly dug towards the unaware Tirtouga. Once he was in position, he then grinned and burst out of the hole right underneath the Tirtouga’s lower flippers with a vicious right uppercut, sending it flying upwards. The ground pokemon then wasted no time in jumping after it with another rapid vertical spin with both arms outstretched, hitting the Tirtouga right in the center of its shell with a vicious crack and sending it even higher while making one final scream.
Atlas then stopped spinning and tucked in, rolling with the impact as he hit the ground. He then sprung up from the roll and watched as the turtle’s body fell onto the dirt in front of him, spreading more dirt and debris to himself. The Drilbur raised his claws up in anticipation of the turtle pulling himself up from the small crater he had created with his body, but it wasn’t to be. He was already limp and unconscious from all of those supereffective strikes.
”Atlas, that’s enough.” Zernebog’s voice cut through the tense silence. ”Battle’s over. We won.”
The Drilbur looked at his trainer and grinned widely as he rubbed his nose and then gave him his best impression of a thumb’s up.
”Yes… nice job~!” Zernebog chuckled and smirked before turning towards Ricki. ”You can get up now, you know. Jet turtle’s off in lala-land.”
You know, she was perfectly content to just stay there…
In the mud…
And not being attacked by angry jet turtles.
Alas, her luck was never that good. The moment the turtle flew overhead, it was already getting ready to come again. Apparently she invaded its territory or whatever. The pissy thing was already moving in for another attack with surprising speed for a turtle. He was about to chomp down on her but not only did she roll out of the way, Zernebog was already on the task of taking over the fight. She turned to watch the Drillbur’s beat down on the turtle and as expected of a Pokémon of Mr. Romanov, it was a stunning display of ferocious strength and skill. A part of her couldn’t wait for a chance to actually battle him again, but then another part of her recalled the battle between Bronzong and Charizard and figured it might be a better to do some more training of her own before challenging him again. The battle against Elinda was also quite the show to spectate as well. While she could certainly provide a challenge, especially if her Pidgeot taking down his dragon type meant anything, she just felt more comfortable getting in more training before another battle.
She pushed off the ground as the battle went on and glanced down at herself, sighing heavily at the amount of mud and dirt she’d managed to practically coat herself in. She didn’t even need to turn around to know Zernebog was smirking, she could practically tell his expression just from his tone. Tilting her head back to look back at him, she merely gave him a dead pan and commented “Oh thank you, Ziggy, my hero.” She didn’t bother to get up yet though, and settled for stripping herself of her extremely dirty old hoodie, showing the black turtle neck tank on underneath. It would be after yanking the purple hoodie off over her head that she would feel something hop into her lap. Carelessly dropping the hoodie to the side, she glared at what she assumed was going to be Zernebog’s Drillbur just getting in her personal space, but it certainly was not.
Yellow eyes looked up at her with a childish curiosity, a little white nose twitching as it sniffed, and the little blue frog leaning towards her face in curiosity. A young croagu—No, that wasn’t right. Ricki quirked her brow at the Pokémon on her lap, not recognizing the thing at all. She began to slowly reach up to touch his head, but upon seeing the muddy hand, the frog shoved off of Ricki’s lap and back into the water. She nearly fell back, but caught herself and stood upright. “You saw that thing, right?” she questioned, leaving behind her hoodie on the shore as she stepped into the water to try and spot the frog, again. “You have any clue what it was?” she asked, before reaching to her Pokeballs.
She flicked one up into the air, letting out a Duskull that took to hovering above her. At this moment it may have been a better to use a super effective Breezy or another water type to fight on even ground, but this was a good chance for some training for her Duskull against a faster opponent. “Alright, we’re looking for a blue… frog… thing” she mumbled, looking around before hearing a splash and turning to see the Froakie leaping onto the shore. She simply pointed, the Duskull slowly turning to look over at the Pokémon and giving a slight nod. It almost appeared to sink into the water as he vanished into Ricki’s shadow before suddenly popping out of the Froakie’s shadow with a powerful slam as a result of Shadow Sneak.
The impact of the Shadow Sneak sent the Froakie stumbling back towards the word and immediately he released a Smokescreen to hide away in and attempt to evacuate back down into the water. It may have worked, but the Duskull slowly raising into the air wasn’t easy to avoid. His eyes illuminated as beams of light hit the smoke cloud, a Foresight attack. It didn’t take more than a few seconds for the Duskull to spot the fleeing Froakie. Locking onto the fleeing Pokémon, the Duskull brought his arms forward and a ball of black energy formed in front of him. The lights shut off and Spooker the Duskull brought his arms closer to his chest before with a harsh thrust, the Shadow Ball flew through the air and hit the target with the aid of Foresight.
The Froakie was sent tumbling back into the water in result of the hit, and now well… The Pokémon wasn’t exactly happy with how this was working out. His smokescreen now seeming to be proven useless, he had no means to flee so now it was a fight this floating asshole wanted and it was a fight this asshole was going to get. But, first, Froakie had to get him down to earth. As he turned around to face the Duskull in the shallow water, the Froakie grabbed a hefty sized rock in the process. Lifting it over his head, he leaned slightly back before giving it a good chuck and nailing the Duskull right in the face. Ricki inwardly grimaced at the Smack Down that effectively caused the Duskull to drift down to the ground, holding his damaged masked face. On the ground, he was vulnerable to ground type attacks, but it was fortunate that the frog didn’t seem to be aware of this as she watched him start to go for another rock.
“Disable!” Ricki ordered and with a flash of his eyes, the Froakie in mid-lean-back with the rock suddenly lost his balance and flopped back with the rock. “Shadow combo!” she ordered and the Duskull immediately sank back down into his own shadow, vanishing from sight. As the Froakie started to get back up, he turned a certainly annoyed look to the dirty shouting human and was about to give her a piece of his mind when once more Spooker caught him off guard. The Froakie was hit by the Shadow Sneak, but immediately as he was knocked back, the Froakie was subjected to a point blank Shadow Ball that sent him flying out of the water and sliding across the shore.
The combination attack seemed to do just the trick of weakening the frog, and Ricki wasted no time in pulling out her Safari ball and chucking it at the mysterious frog her and Zernebog had come across. As the ball rocked back and forth to try and restrain the monster, Ricki looked over at Zernebog once more with a baffled look. “Seriously, the fuck did I just catch?” she asked, starting back out of the water.
By The Way; Attempt to catch Froakie!
Duskull starts off with a Shadow Sneak, hitting the Froakie. Froakie attempts to flee in a Smokescreen but is spotted by Spooker's Foresight. Spooker hits Froakie with a Shadow Ball, in which an angry Froakie hits him with a Smack Down. Before Froakie can repeat the Smack Down, though, Spooker uses Disable to prevent a repeat. Spooker then dives into his shadow and hits Froakie with another Shadow Sneak, and point blank Shadow Ball combo.
