Damn, this was quite the cave, Josh thought to himself as he looked around inside Granite Cave. After reuniting, Josh and Maxine had begun traveling together again for now, and their curiosity led them to wandering into Granite Cave to explore a bit. With Lightning on Josh's shoulder, the blonde looked around.
"Well, this place could certainly use some light" he commented, cracking his neck. "I can barely see my own hands. Probably would have been smart to bring a light, huh?" he said as he looked over at Maxine, who would likely also have her Pikachu, Ritchie, on her shoulder as well, as she usually did. He couldn't help but smirk a bit, overjoyed to be traveling with and exploring with his old friend again, but he was also in wonder as to what in the hell they were getting themselves into. Pokemon tended to flock these caves, but whether they be dangerous or not, they didn't know... Not yet anyway.
This area wasn't familiar one bit.. All that she could make out was Ritchie's fur fluff on his head brushing near her eyes, it wasn't the best to go head first into a dark cave without a source of light. "Aye.. I can't see you." She called over, her fingers reaching over to try and have a small hold onto his shoulder or possibly hand to make sure they don't end up getting separated in here.
Ritchie had peered his eyes over behind them, seeming to have his eyes on something the trainers couldn't see. "Pi..." He muttered lightly when his gaze fell back forward, Maxine answered her friends question with a nod, "I can have Ember actually provide some light for us so we can see what's in front of us."
Soon enough she didn't watch what her feet and legs ended up practically stepped onto a trail in the cave, her feet stepped on what appeared to be two large rocks in this darkness, but soon discovered they weren't rocks and skidded off them when they reacted. Rocks don't react.. Damn it she just stomped on a Pokemon!
She broke off from the blonde's lead and found out that Pokemon was a Makuhita, making himself present now with him throwing his right arm up, hopefully Josh wasn't going to go too far. Maxine's hand slid onto a Pokeball on her waist to toss it up afterwards to reveal she summoned Ember, her Tepig. "Tep!" He cried out once he landed on his paws and his trainer replied, "Come on, Ember, let's give this our all." She encouraged and called out a command. "Ember, use Defense Curl."
"Te!" Ember would let out as he would curl into a ball, just in time to take a Fake Out, which would lessen the damage. The Makuhita, obviously not happy with that quick attempted preemptive strike failing, would go for a Fake Out again, hoping to weaken the defenses.
"Ember, dodge and use Flamethrower!" Maxine would quickly call out. The palm would be dodged as Tepig rolled while still in his ball to the left, before exiting ball mode and opening his maws. "TEEEEEEEEEEE!" he let out as he unleashed a jet of flames, white hot in flavor that the Makuhita would have problems dodging, just barely jumping back from and getting singed on the side by. The Makuhita was obviously mad now though.
His anger was present on his face before the wild Pokemon's hands were now bashing against his stomach for some reason.. This had Maxine and Ember both lean in their heads slowly, it appeared to be using the move Belly Drum, this attack caused the Pokemon's HP to diminish slightly, but their attack goes up. This was one chance that she can make an attack to cause some actual damage.
"Quick Ember, use Flare Blitz!" Maxine would call, not wanting to give Makuhita a chance to attack with the increased power. "Te!" Ember quickly responded as he would charge full speed toward the Makuhita. "Te! Te! Teeee!" he loosed as flames would surround Tepig, before he would slam himself into the Makuhita, sending it skidding back. Of course, Makuhita managed to stay on it's feet, and would go for a Seismic Toss, suddenly leaping toward her Tepig and wrapping it's arms around Ember.
"Ember!" Maxine called out in panic as the Makihita would leap into the air, still clutching her precious Tepig in a death grip. "You have to get out of that, and fast!" she called. Of course, despite his struggling, Ember was unable to get out in time and would be slammed to the ground as it came down. Maxine let out a breath as the smoke from the impact would clear. It seemed the Tepig was down, but not out. "You can do it, Ember!" Maxine would call as the Makuhita would go for a Reversal attack, aiming to use it's low HP status to slam a palm into the Tepig and finish it off. "Flamethrower, upward!" she called. "Teee...." Ember would let out weakly as he managed to get to his feet, before looking up at the Makuhita about to bring fury down on it. "TEEEEEEE!" he let out as he loosed a Flamethrower, directly striking right in the face. This time, the Makuhita would fall back, stunned for the moment.
Maxine would quickly grab a Pokeball from her belt, hitting the button to bring it to full size. She would throw it at the Makuhita to take advantage of the opportunity, and watched as it would hit and the Makuhita would disappear into the red light....

As the Makuhita attacked, Josh decided to stand back and let Maxine battle. He was interested in seeing how she handled a situation like this after all... It had been so long since she had been his pupil in a sense. He had taught her all he could, but Josh couldn't help but procure interest in seeing Maxine in action in something besides being up against him directly.
And she handled it surprisingly well. Josh was amazed at how well she had trained her Tepig. Ember, his name was if he recalled. Ah, yes. Her first Pokemon. She loved that Tepig, Josh knew that. And he was surprised to see how well in sync they were to boot. As her Tepig battled fiercely, Josh watched and took notes mentally, as he always did with watching a Trainer's battle style. You never knew when you'd need to give advice, or even have to battle them yourself. Always keeping tabs... That was something he just did.
Eventually, after a long and hard fight, the Makuhita would go down. Maxine would throw her Pokeball and catch that thing like a fly in a trap. Josh clapped and chuckled a bit. "Congratulations" he said with a smirk. "You've improved since I last saw you try to catch Pokemon" he remarked as he and Lightning kept walking.

[Taking this catch as agreed to by me and Maxine OOC, then dropping out of the thread to give Maxine the last two spawns as a solo thread]
As they walked, Josh would hold out a hand and stop Maxine. "Stop" he commanded simply. They were being watched... He could feel it. As if on cue, a Sableye would drop down, attempting to hit them with Shadow Sneak. Josh would back up, pulling Maxine with him. "Stand back" he commanded calmly as he would step forward toward the Sableye. "Lightning, use Nasty Plot, then Thunderbolt!" he immediately commanded. A gleam would shine in Lightning's eye before he leaped off Josh's shoulder, his cheeks sparking as he unleashed a powerful Thunderbolt, Nasty Plot boosting it's power, that would engulf and fry the Sableye. It would let out an ear piercing screech in pain, before managing to break out and let it's eyes glow red... It would fire a small beam that wouldn't hurt Lightning, but as Lightning landed, Josh knew what it meant. There would be no switching Lightning out. He was stuck using Lightning against Sableye... Fair enough.
"Lightning, Quick Attack!" he would quickly call and Lightning would respond without a second thought. He would charge, his speed kicking up as he ran toward the Sableye. Of course, he hadn't expected a sudden Power Gem attack to send him back. Josh gritted his teeth, this Sableye was no pushover.... The perfect Pokemon to catch, he thought to himself.
"Brick Break!" Josh would instantly call. Lightning would nod as he got to his feet. "Pika!" he responded as he charged, leaping into the air. "Piiii.... KA!" he let out as his paws glowed, before he loosed a chop onto the Sableye, in what seemed to be quite effective as the Sableye fell back. "Look out, Lightning!" Josh called as it would quickly get up and unleash a series of orbs, Confuse Ray...
"Agility!" Josh commanded. "Pika!" Lightning responded in affirmative as he ran around the cave, his speed increasing to where he would disappear for sudden moments before re-appearing. Managing to dodge the Confuse Ray, he was getting close to his adversary. "Thunder!" he called. "Pika...." Lightning let out as his cheeks sparked. He was ready for his most powerful attack, which was still boosted by Nasty Plot..... "CHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" he let out fiercely as a massive Thunder attack would hit Sableye dead on from close range, causing it to fall on one knee. That was all it took for Josh to take the incentive and throw a Pokeball, watching as it went in.... Hopefully that was enough.

Josh smiled faintly as it worked. "Good job, Lightning" he said as he picked the Pokeball up. He took a sip from his canteen, and let Lightning have a sip as well, before noticing it was bone dry. Frowning, he looked over at Maxine.
"Hey, I'm going to go refill my canteen, we're bone fucking dry" he said, giving a sigh. "There's a river not too far from here. I shouldn't be too long. While you're waiting for me, why don't you explore a little bit more? Maybe you'll run into a few more Pokemon to catch" he offered with a small smile. "I won't be long, I promise" he said, patting her on the back.
Josh would walk past Maxine and head toward the exit. He hoped Maxine would do alright on her own. But on the flip side, this was a good test for her. He just hoped she would take full advantage of it. But he didn't know a Mawile was in the shadows, watching Maxine... Ready to attack.
With the blonde leaving the cave to grab some water Maxine took his advice to explore more of the cave, smiling from the pat on her back and itching her cheek from it, alright.. Let's make him proud, damn it. She began to step off after he passed her side and nodded her head towards him, "I'll do my best." She answered in a rush before heading in the opposite direction.
Once she was progressed further in the cave soon she feet stopped in their tracks, she felt like.. someone or something else was here, watching her. With Ember still providing light for her she commanded him to light it up behind her to see what was behind her, hopefully it wasn't a small prank from Josh.. Soon enough she discovered it wasn't that, instead it was a Pokemon.. A Mawile!
"Ember, quick Defense Curl before it can attack!" Maxine called out to the pig Pokemon who rolled into a ball for a moment before jumping back onto his feet. The Mawile darted towards the two with his jaw from behind him to chomp on the pig, causing less damage because of the defense move Ember had done before, "Use Flamethrower!" She ordered, watching when he started to charge towards the wild Pokemon and stopped to open his mouth, releasing a flame aimed at the Mawile, but he dodged it and reached over to use Vice Grip on the Tepig with its mouth, pinching him.
There was hesitation present in her expression, Josh would be telling her to keep going and pick yourself up, push yourself. Alright, his advice was going to be used. "Ember, come on you can do it! Use Flare Blitz this time!" She cried out over to her partner, beginning to watch as flames came around Ember and charged into the wild Pokemon, causing it to be knocked off its feet for a moment.
Her hand reacted faster then her mind when she reached for a Pokeball and opened it to toss at the stunned Pokemon. She didn't even think about what she had just done.. Sounds like she over reacted.
