Josh was laughing. Why? He was in the Kalos Badland, digging, being forced to rely on canteens to keep from dehydrating and dying. How could he be laughed?
Simple, really. There was Lightning, lying in a patch of sand, and making sand angels out of it. The Pichu seemed to not mind the fact they were out in the badlands, and seemed to be able to find fun wherever he went. The idea brought tears of laughter to Josh's eyes, as he wasn't expecting Lightning to decide to make Pi-Angels in the sand.
Still, he had a dig to do. A shame, he could tell by Lightning's antics that he'd prefer to be at the beach right now. Maybe after this, they would relax at the beach... They could use a little vacation after all. Just a day relaxing on lawn chairs at the beach, with his Pokemon out of their Pokeballs to freely roam and have a bit of fun in the sun for the day... Maybe play a bit of frisbee and see which of his Pokemon could grab it first. They hadn't gotten to have as much beach time as planned on Josh's visit to Slateport before, maybe after this would be a good time...
Regardless, after the distraction from Lightning, Josh was humored and in better spirits as he continued digging...

Unfortunately for Josh, he would never find a way to distract HER (Does he even have a her? He didn't have a her last I heard, though he's flirted with Izumi a few times....) as he would accidentally smash the Shiny Stone to pieces with the shovel as he was digging, having not noticed it, and the stone's particles would catch his attention.
Josh raised an eyebrow as he held up the shattered particles of what was likely some rare stone. "Ah, shit" he muttered, sighing at his own carelessness. No fault of the Pokemon this time, this time it was on him, he couldn't afford to continue wasting resources like that.
"Gah..." he said, shaking his head. Lightning looked over at him, concerned. Josh smiled right back at him. "I'm fine" he promised. "Just made a whoops, we can keep digging" he said. With a sigh, he kept digging. He made the mistake, he'd have to keep up with the labor.
Dig Dig Dig . . . What's this?! Congratulations, You've found RELIC BAND ! A bracelet made in a civilization about 3,000 years ago. A maniac will buy it for a high price.

"Hello, what's this?" Josh questioned as he found some kind of strange band in the ground. He tilted his head... It looked somewhat valuable, he supposed. "Hey, Lightning, you see this?" he said, holding it out to Lightning who took it. The Pichu held it up and examined it curiously. "Chuuuu?"
"Hmm..." Josh said, scratching his beard. "It looks like it could fetch something pretty, I suppose" he said, taking a breath. "What do you think, Lightning? Think we should keep digging, or should we head out and see if we can find a buyer? Maybe we'll go buy ice cream with the money or something"
"Pichu-Pi-Cha!" Lightning let out excitedly. He always loved ice cream!
Apparently so did something else. Because before either one of them could react, the Relic Band was caught in the talons of some kind of flying Pokemon at high speeds, and before they could stop it, it would fly off into the distance.
"Damnit!" Josh cried out, gritting his teeth. That thing had just stolen their artifact! "Pichu..." Lightning whimpered as he looked down, blaming himself. Josh sighed and patted his head. "It's alright, Lightning..." he said quietly. "It's not your fault. We'll just keep digging, it's no problem. We'll find something eventually, right?"
"Pichu-Pi!" Lightning let out in agreement as Josh nodded and kept digging.

Josh's eyes brightened as he picked up some sort of stone he'd found in the ground. It looked almost just like...
"Yes!"
They'd found another one of those stones! Just like that nice looking one from before! Josh grinned wide as he held it out to the Pichu, looking every which way in case another fucking bird tried to steal it. "Hm... I wonder what these are for?" he mused aloud as he and the Pichu examined it. "Pi-Pi-Pichu!" Lightning chirped in victory. Their dig had been successful once again, it seemed. But the question was... While these stones were fun to collect, what was their use? Could they have something else besides monetary value? Josh considered these things as they packed up, too exhausted to continue for the day.
Josh cracked his neck as he finished packing and stared at this new stone for a moment before pocketing it. He smiled as he allowed Lightning to climb onto his shoulder and they headed off.
"Hey Lightning, remember when I promised we'd get Ice cream?" he said, looking over at his Pichu. "Pi?" Lightning inquired, almost sounding hopeful. "Well, today since we did such a good job, I'm getting you a double scoop!" he said, grinning. ".... Picha! Picha! Picha!" Lightning chirped in a flurry of excitement!
