Okay, so the trip to the Safari Zone was a bust. Zernebog still didn’t know how he was going to proceed now that Orre wasn’t an option. Granted, catching a Ditto and having Prometheus evolve was definitely a boon, but it still left him lost as to what he should do next.
Since he didn’t know what the hell he was supposed to do next, he decided to return to Kanto and challenge another Gym. What? The battle might help him decide what it was he was supposed to do now. There were no leads as to where Deoxys could be, the Orre thing was a bust, and now there was the looming mystery of Kalos hanging over his head. He was going to need all help he could get.
And that was why he was facing the Gym of Cerulean City, home of some Gym Leader named Misty or Foggy or something. He’d always had better fights when the Gym Leader was a woman, so he hoped that she wouldn’t disappoint. Moreover, maybe this would help him decide what he was supposed to do next before it bugged him to death.
”Here we go….” Zernebog muttered under his breath as he knocked on the door three times before pushing them open and waltzing in.
Since this was a Water-type Gym, he was completely unsurprised to see a large pool in the area. If he were being honest, he would’ve been more surprised if there wasn’t a large pool in the area for the water-types to take advantage of. But he wasn’t here to admire the décor- he was here to fight and clear things out in his head with the best way he knew how.
Pokemon battling.
”Hello, is the Gym Leader here?” Zernebog called out. ”I’m here to challenge the Gym.”
That sounded like the gym door opening. While Zerne was preoccupied with his inner thinking and looking for the gym leader in question, she was in the gym - in the water specifically. With a single arm stroke, she pulled herself up to the edge of the pool, whipping her short mat of hair back as she threw up both arms, resting them on the edge of the pool and looking right up at the white-haired man in her gym.
"A gym battle, huh? Sure thing. One sec." She kicked off on the pool, moving in a corkscrew before hitting the other side of the pool and the ladder latched onto the side - three rungs, just enough for her to grip the rails and pull herself out and up, splashing as she went, her one piece white swimsuit glistening with the fresh water of the pool. She grabbed up a jacket and tossed it on, turning dramatically to greet her challenger.
"Yo! My name's Misty, and you already know this is a gym. So... yeah. Rules. We're going for a three on three, no substitutions, all that. Sound fair?"
OOC NOTE:: Short post is short, but I wanna get to the combat.

Zernebog wasn’t surprised to see that the gym leader was in the swimming pool. That was where he had seen the last water-type specialist gym leader he had fought months ago. Granted, she was actually swimming while the other guy was on some kind of floater if he remembered it right. Maybe that was a good sign as to her skill with water pokemon? Who knows? After all, he didn’t hang around enough water-type trainers like swimmers and sailors to be able to figure that out on sight. He was more of a land and sky guy.
Since she asked him to wait for her to get out of the pool, he just stood there and waited. It would have been fun to antagonize her with a sarcastic quip or something like that, but he was in a serious mood. Well… semi-serious. Battles were supposed to be fun, after all.
Once she was out the pool, she wasted no time in stating the gym rules, causing him to grin. A three-on-three? He hadn’t had that in a long while. Should be fun.
”Yeah, that’s fine. ” He then grinned and gestured for her to go and take out a pokeball.
”Ladies first.” He stated, taking a playful, almost chivalrous air.
Good, this guy was going along with getting right to the point of the battle. With another wet shake of her hands, she gave a return smirk to the white-haired challenger and turned around to reach over behind her - flipping open a box on the counter containing six pokeballs. She plucked up one from the bottom row and squinted at it before nodding. "Yeah, you could use a good warmup! Let's go!"
She tossed the Pokeball out into the pool, and out popped the Star Shape Pokemon! The Staryu spun once as it hovered over the pool for a moment before dipping in, remaining half submerged, its gemstone facing down Zerne as they awaited his choice.
"Go ahead and take the first move, whitey! Staryu 'n I can handle it!" She cocked both fists to her hips and kept her grin, then pulled her hand up as a thumbs up. "Let me see what you'll do to earn the Cascade Badge!"

A Staryu?
Zernebog knew that those stars were always fierce battlers. He would know because he caught one of those a few months ago back in the Sevii Islands while partaking in that thing they called fishing. This should be an interesting battle, at the very least.
And since she was so gracious as to give him the first move, then he might as well start off strong. Well, not too strong of course because he didn’t want to wreck her gym like he did with Ferris and he actually wanted a challenge. Granted, Brock was a great challenge so he expected Misty to be one as well.
”If you say so~ ” Zernebog grinned and took out a pokeball from his belt, already knowing who he wanted to start out with. This one was traded to him by a redhead he met in the Safari Zone, and he was eager to give him a test drive out here in a real battle situation.
He tossed the ball into the air, releasing a green serpentine, eel-like figure that floated in the air and looked at the Staryu with something akin to a predatory gleam in his eyes.
”Let’s get the party started, Nereus~” He called out as the Eelektrik wriggled in anticipation of the fight that was about to happen.
Zernebog scratched the back of his neck for a moment before grinning. ”Let’s start with the basics~ Nereus!”
In response, the Eelektrik coiled itself up, raising its attack, defense, and accuracy. Then a quick burst of speed, he suddenly lunged into the offensive by starting off with an electrified tackle. As he did so, he released an electric pulse aimed right at the Staryu that would arrive far faster than his tackle because of the nature of electricity, hoping to take it down quickly by paralyzing it, leaving it as easy prey for his electric charge.
NOTES
Battle Summary - The Eelektrik uses Coil to boost itself and then attacks with Spark after leading off with Thunder Wave.
100% Atk + 1, Def + 1, Acc + 1
Coil, Spark (STAB - 97.5 base power), Thunder Wave (Guaranteed paralysis if it hits)
Misty squinted as the eel was released into her gym - that had all the telltale signs of an electric-type if she saw one. The yellow spots, the way it just seemed to electrify the air... yep, it was one of the obvious choices she'd expect against her gym. That was fine with her, no doubt. She'd just have to show them how she planned for this kind of play style.
As the eel coiled, she sent out her order. "Reflect Type, now!" The Staryu spun once, the gem in the center of its body glowing brightly before shifting colors to a bright, shiny yellow for a moment as the Spark attack came in. The Thunder Wave struck and looked effective for a moment as the Staryu paused, letting the electric tackle smack into his body and falling into the pool. Misty's look gave away any sense of accomplishment as she raised her hand out, clenching her fist.
"Strike back! Fill the field!" The Staryu shot out of the water a few feet away from where it entered, more to the electric-type's left. It glowed ever so slightly as the static sticking to its body was absorbed by its new Electric-typing, then the Staryu spun and fired off a spray of violent bubbles. As those deadly poppers pushed out, the star shape Pokemon focused for a moment before firing off a dazzling ray from its gem at the challenger's Pokemon.
OOC NOTE:: Used Reflect Type [Electric], Bubblebeam, and Power Gem!

Reflect type?
Zernebog raised an eyebrow. That pretty much removed the type advantage he had in this battle. However, he still had some tricks up his sleeves to compensate for that. He just didn’t think that he would have to resort to them this early, but hey no plan survives contact with the enemy or so those old generals used to say.
This was then followed up by a barrage of bubbles and sparking ray. If he didn’t know any better he would say that the combination was more apt for a Coordinator contest than a gym challenge, but he could personally attest to the power of flashy moves. Still, he already had an order in mind for this one… mainly as a way to stall for time while he thought of something to break the Staryu with.
”Nereus? Clear ‘em then shoot away.” That was an utterly bizarre order, but Nereus understood it anyway.
Nereus spat out a bright green beam of energy that instantly vaporized the bubbles from the Bubblebeam as well as the sparkling beam that had come from the Staryu. However, in stopping the latter the beam sputtered and died as well, having lost the last vestiges of its power to stop the attack. Once that was done the Eelektrick coiled himself tightly again, waiting for an opportunity to launch his next move or for Zernebog to get another sneaky idea. Hey, he wasn’t picky.
NOTES
Battle Summary - The Eelektrik blocks Bubblebeam and Power Gem with Giga Drain, then uses Coil.
Misty hummed to herself as the challenger blocked the double-type attack. Seems like his eel had enough bite to back up its bark. That was just fine by her - it meant that she'd get more than a simple day's rush out of this battle! Time to bust out the bigger guns now that she had fielded his approximate strength and got ready for one of her favorite combinations.
"Alright Staryu, get in there! Razzle dazzle!" The Staryu spun once as it rose, the gem glowing like it was about to use Power Gem again - instead, the bright light erupted violently, creating all the force of a Solar Flare technique. Misty herself kept her grin, even through closed eyes. The bright flash was bound to give them enough time to at least start the next fun trick.
The Staryu dipped into the water, spinning at the surface as a wave welled up - and then rose in proportion as it shoved itself towards the electric-type, a large force of water threatening to come down and crush it under the pressure and force of a storm. It was soon followed by the center of the Staryu pulsing blue before firing off a jet of super-cold energy, smashing into the back of the wave and filling the water with chunks of jagged ice. Should be fun to get hit by, at the least.

Zernebog didn’t have the time to pat himself on the back before the gym leader went on the offensive again, this time with what looked like a spinning ray- wait a minute. Razzle Dazzle didn’t sound like the code name for an attack move. In fact, it sounded like the code name for….
”Nereus, tuck and coil!” Zernebog immediately ordered eve as he pulled his bandana down and closed his eyes, barely managed to suppress a grimace at having to use such obvious commands. It couldn’t be helped though since he wasn’t as well-trained as he would like.
However, it was trained enough to obey orders right after he’d ordered them, enabling Nereus to coil up and bury his head in the center of his coil a few moments before the brilliance flared to life. Thanks to being coiled up, the Eelektrik was able to escape the bright, dazzling light. However, the position muffled his hearing enough not to hear anything that isn’t shouted at him, leaving him virtually blind.
Despite being blindfolded though, Zernebog certainly wasn’t blind. Closing off his eyesight had allowed a temporary minor increase in his other senses, especially his hearing. Given how frequently he had been going to dark places, he had long been trained to hone his hearing in times like this. That allowed him to hear something go into the water. Probably the Staryu.
He wasn’t concerned until he heard a massive amount of water moving from the direction of the pool, getting louder and louder. He recognized the signs enough from his travels to know what it was, and that definitely alarmed him. ”Nereus! Super jump now!”
Not the most creative way to call Bounce, but it was enough for Nereus to spring up from his coiled position, using the added power of his position to reach the ceiling, which was enough for him to dodge what was apparently a massive tidal wave heading towards his previous position.
However, Zernebog wasn’t so lucky. He tried to back away from the wave to avoid getting clipped by it, but some of the absurdly cold water managed to splash him before he got out of range, soaking his lower half and making chunks of sharp ice stick out of his clothing.
”Just great.” He wasn’t irritated about the cold –he’s experienced far worse- but more of the wetness and what felt like sharp ice clinging to him.
NOTES
Battle Summary - The Eelektrik prevents himself from being blinded by Flash using Coil, and then uses Bounce to dodge the combo.
Woops. She didn't intend to hit the trainer - that was an unexpected consequence of her attack, it seemed. Had it hit, he might have been spared the chilling consequences. Misty grimaced ever so slightly as she thought about how cold that might be. "Sorry!" she lightly called out, not wanting to interrupt the battle at hand with a proper apology.
The eel was airborne, I repeat, the eel was airborne. The water-type gym specialist let her gaze follow its path, and her Staryu spun once in curiosity as it was reaching maximum altitude. "Alright, knock it down here!" she shouted with a dramatic finger point, feeling like an ace attourney as the Staryu's core glowed a shade of pink, then a blast of psychic blunt force was shot out at the electric-type.
It was less for damage and more to knock it off balance or off course if it intended to try and Bounce onto the Staryu, followed by another quick spin that released several homing energy stars that moved in from the flanks - weak, but reliable attacks that tended to chip away over time.

It was no secret to any of Zernebog’s friends that he loved the move Dig. Anyone with half a brain could figure out the reason for that once they knew what his profession was- utility. It was a battle move and the perfect type of skill pokemon have in their possession for his profession.
However, not every pokemon can learn dig, usually because of physical limitations. Zernebog knew the handiness of a move with a semi-invulnerable turn in it, so he had no choice but to look for similar moves with the same descriptor.
Enter Bounce. That move had a semi-invulnerable turn while the pokemon was high up in the air. However, it can’t be maintained for as long as fly can unless the pokemon had an ability that would allow them to do so, like say Levitate or something. And wouldn’t you know it, Nereus had just that.
In fact, Nereus was maintaining the high altitude with his natural levitating ability in order to make the two attacks fizzle out before they reached him due to the sheer distance between them. Once that was done, he eased up on his natural levitating ability, letting himself fall right towards the Staryu, his tail ready to deliver one hell of a smack to it, helped along by a Coil boost and by gravity itself. It would need one hell of a move to counter it without breaking something or being run through like tissue paper.
Meanwhile, while Nereus was doing that, Zernebog had taken off his makeshift blindfold and was removing the chunks of ice from his pants without flinching. He was used to the cold, so the ice water didn’t bother him at all. When one has taken a shower at his home without any running hot water, well… it’s either they learn to deal with it or die from hypothermia. Obviously he wasn’t dead yet so he learned how to deal with it.
”It's fine.” Zernebog muttered with a shrug as he continued to remove the chunks of ice on his waterlogged pants.
NOTES
Battle Summary - The Eelektrik dodges the two attacks using the semi-invulnerable turn of Bounce and then attacks the Staryu with said Bounce.
Seems like they misjudged the height this eel was able to maintain. Misty was used to the Bounce attack, but she had never had to experience it from something capable of slightly maintaining an altitude - not like many people shoved Levitate Pokemon against Water-types. People tended to just throw Grass- and Electric- types her way and she had adapted to that.
No matter, she was still confident in her ability to counter this thing. Misty felt fine now that her challenger had confirmed that he was all right with the... uh... cold shower, so she put her 100% focus back onto the battle. "Staryu, brace yourself!"
The sea star did indeed brace himself, shooting off to right above the water's surface before spinning - now facing the incoming eel, he waited a moment before firing off another mental burst of energy, intending to take some oomf and effort out of the attack as it came down. However, there was no time to truly dodge - just to turn the attack into free entry into the water as it was smashed down.
Once in the water, Staryu went about with a very light glow, healing himself with natural energy he had stored over time. After that was done, he sprayed up a wave of explosive bubbles that would rise to the surface of the water, emerge, and then pop right above - with Staryu in constant motion in the water, it was sure to provide a nice little chase or a game of guess where.
OOC NOTE:: Used Psychic as Nereus came down, then used Recover. Bubblebeam as cover.

Zernebog did not smile when the Staryu was knocked into the water by Nereus’ strike. In fact, he was resisting the urge to frown. Using Psychic to soften the blow had mitigated a fair bit of the damage from the floating eel’s attack, and sending it into its home territory did nothing for his advantage. In fact, it was only to the Staryu’s advantage since changed type or not it was still at its best in the water.
And as Nereus took to the air above the pool again, he had to keep a straight face as bubbles erupted everywhere on its surface, pretty much covering the Staryu from his or his pokemon’s view. If this were Prometheus or Diomedes it wouldn’t be a problem given that their senses bypassed such problems, but Nereus didn’t have the same senses they did.
But he wasn’t going to have Nereus dive for it even though he could. He had another tactic in mind just for this situation.
”So it wants to play tag?” Zernebog’s face cracked into a smirk as he stared down at the bubbling water. ”No dice. Force it out, Nereus.”
Nereus glowed bright yellow as he gathered up a lot of electrical energy in response to Zernebog’s request while slowly lifting up even further into the air. Then he fired off a massive blast of electricity from his mouth and fired it right at the pool, causing the entire body of water to start crackling with bright yellow electricity as it was conducted by the water.
However, Nereus wasn’t done yet. He glowed bright twice more in order to fire two more salvos of electricity right at the water in quick succession, making the water more and more electrified with dangerous current in the process while relying on the speed of electricity to strike before the Staryu had the chance to surface from the water. And with each shot, the remaining electricity from each of his Charge Beams were making him more and more powerful, making the shots that came after it even more potent. Electric type or not, it didn’t have the ability to resist that much voltage both literally and figuratively so it was going to have to come out.
If for some reason it still didn’t come out, well… Nereus still had a lot of electricity left. He can do this for hours if he had to until it couldn’t move at all.
NOTES
Battle Summary - The Eelektrik levitates above the water and fires off three Charge Beams to electrify the entire pool and damage the Staryu inside through conduction (more effective because of the chlorine ions floating inside a pool).
So this guy didn't appreciate a good game of hide-and-go-seek. That was fine with her; Misty and her Staryu could provide a more direct challenge if needed. The Eel chose to try and fire off some electric charges into the water rather than giving chase into the charged surface, so Misty relied on her Staryu to do what was right; they had encountered opponents who prefered to linger near the surface before, and they'd get what was coming to them.
Staryu himself was cackled with electricity from the first blow; it stung, for sure, but his own Electric-typing helped to mitigate it. He popped up shortly after, exiting his own bubble field with ease and spinning in an arc over the Eelektrik. One at the pinacle of the arc, he fired off the Psychic blast he had been charging in the air - a pure volume of force intending to slam the sucker into the water he just kindly charged up like a mine field, and followed up with a violent spray of Bubblebeam to follow it in and explode right behind it. Bubblebeam's bubbles looked pretty, for sure, but each one had a nice little punch to it and a whole swarm of the stuff following you could end pretty badly.
OOC NOTE:: First Charge Beam hit; popped up before second and fired Psychic intending to knock the Eel into the water he electrified, then Bubblebeam on the surface to make it all...explode-y.

So at least one of Nereus’ dispersed charge beams managed to hit and electrify the pool before the Staryu managed to get out. If he had used anything other than an electric type move to bombard the pool, then executing three of them would have left him vulnerable to the Staryu emerging from the pool.
”Up!” And it was also a good thing that Zernebog had trained himself to see the miniscule tell-tale signs of a psychic attack being used, especially from Psychic. It was one of the good things he got from having a Psychic-type pokemon and dealing with a lot of them in his travels for many years.
The warning and the quick execution of his previous attacks gave Nereus enough time to coil up and then spring away from the concussive wave of force like… well, a spring. Once he was at the peak, he stayed there and observed the girl and her Staryu, waiting for his trainer’s orders to fall down like a vengeful meteor. With his attack boosts, it was something that was definitely going to hurt the Staryu if it hit, and he had a good chance of hitting later on due to his own enhanced accuracy from Coil.
NOTES
Battle Summary - The Eelektrik coils up and bounces out of the way of Psychic in order to avoid being sent to the electrified pool.
