”Okay. That was weird.”
Golden eyes could only blink as they stared at the direction where Luminose was. For some reason, the minute he had cleaned the treasure that Hyperion obtained and showed it to the appraisal guy in the area he had been forced to tell how he had gotten the strange multicolored sphere. Once he had, the man had wasted no time in demanding him to go back to his dig site and look for other things that might have been buried as well.
Of course Zernebog wasn’t one to just blindly obey orders at the snap of a finger. However, the man had told him that it was really important that he do so, to the point that he even promised him that he would thank him for making him do this before other people discovered his dig site. He would have still thought it to be pure poppycock if the man wasn’t so damned persuasive. Of course, persuading his pokemon to continue the excavation was easy considering that they were always game to help him out with his work, especially if it meant that he wouldn’t get to kill others yet again.
”Might as well make the best of it while I can.” Zernebog sighed as he rolled his shoulders and then turned around to look at the dig site that he had left yesterday. It looked untouched from how he had left it, so he wasn’t concerned about the tampering right now. ”Can’t waste non-harmful daylight now.”
Zernebog pulled out the same three pokeballs from yesterday and released Hyperion, Achilles, and Atlas out into the wasteland again. ”Okay you three. We’re going back to work today.”
He grinned and gestured towards the wastes. ”I’ve already briefed you three earlier on the stakes and rewards of the second part of this contest. I trust that you won’t squander the opportunity nor would you three cheat or destroy any precious artefacts.”
The three of them nodded. ”Good. Now since you know what to do already… you may all begin. Have fun and may Arceus watch over you three.”
Zernebog could only chuckle as the three of them wasted no time in diving and digging their way into the sand and dirt that comprised the main topsoil of the badlands, easily shredding through to the subsoil and disappearing in large holes. Sometimes it was fun having such competitive pokemon. Made his life much easier at least.
And now… to wait for them to find something again. Time to put up that tent.

The first one to emerge this time was Achilles thirty minutes into the search, bearing something large and brown in his large jaws. Golden eyes watched lazily as the large purple dragon approached with his bounty, eyes glinting with a hint of smugness.
”Alright Achilles.” Zernebog spoke up once the dirt-and-sand covered pokemon entered the tent and reached out for the large rock in the Gabite’s jaws. ”Show me what you’ve got.”
In response, Achilles dropped the rock onto his trainer’s hands and grinned. ”Gabite!” He crossed his arms, looking proud and all that he found something that looked important.
Chuckling to himself, Zernebog raised the strange brown rock to eye level and began examining it closely. There was a smooth imprint of what looked like a half-dome, followed by what looked vertical and horizontal lines, one set of which looked almost like ribs. The second set were more curved and surrounded the central one at the sides, almost like arms or legs of a sort.
”Hm….” Zernebog turned it around a couple of times while examining it, memorizing the features and comparing them with the vast amounts of stock knowledge in his head before finally recognizing it. ”Oh. A Dome Fossil. Interesting.”
He was hoping for some more of those mysterious spheres though, so he wasn’t going to take his back along with him. He was an archaeologist, not a paleontologist like that Arthur guy he met a few months back, so he could afford not to keep the specimen.
”Sorry buddy, but I’ll just take a picture of then and then you can put it near where you got it or somewhere else. All I know is that we’re not keeping it, okay? You still have to go look for other stuff.” Achilles pouted as he watched his trainer stand up and place the Dome Fossil on the ground before taking out a camera as well.
Zernebog ignored the pout and simply took pictures of the Dome Fossil before hading it back over to Achilles. ”Okay, now put that back in and continue digging again, alright?”
The purple dragon nodded and quickly shot out of the tent and went back into his hole, leaving Zernebog by himself again.
”...next time I’m bringing a fan or doing this at night.” Zernebog muttered once his pokemon had left the tent. He had wanted to join in too, but Hyperion and Achilles ouldn’t let him because they knew that he would get heat stroke if he tried at this time of day in a desert. Damn those uppity lizards.

The second find was surprisingly a bit faster than the first one. Zernebog wasn’t looking at his watch, but he was pretty sure that it was sooner since he knew that it didn’t take him long to finish taking notes on what he remembered on the Dome Fossil into his notebook and he had heard someone surface as soon as he had put down his notebook.
Looking up from inside his tent, he saw that this time it was Atlas bearing the most recent find. Just seeing the spherical shape was enough to take his interest and make him grin. Had the Excadrill found something else related to his mysterious find? Well, he was about to find out.
”Found something, eh Atlas?” Zernebog raised an eyebrow at the Excadrill, who stood tall despite him staring down at it. ”Let’s see what you’ve got.”
Zernebog took the dirty orb in his pokemon’s claws and began to clean it with a cloth that he had laid out earlier just for this occasion. It didn’t take him long to see that it was some sort of cat’s eye marble that was many purple-pink with a black and yellow eye. It didn’t look anything like the other orb he had gotten from this area, but this one looked important too. If nothing else, he was going to trust his gut on this one again.
”And looks like we found the winner of the day.” Zernebog smirked as he looked at the marble in his hands. ”Call the other two and call off the search for now, Atlas. This is enough for one day. We’ll go back tomorrow once we get this thing appraised too.”
The Excadrill nodded, not even bothering to hide his smug grin as he went out to tell the other the good news. Well, good news for him, anyway.
