”Badlands, huh?” Golden eyes looked lazily upon the barren and dry wasteland filled with nothing but sand and rock for miles upon miles, shimmering in the dry heat. There was no living thing within sight; not even a Cacnea or a bird pokemon flying overhead in the cloudless azure sky. Truly one of the most inhospitable-looking places in the world.
”Eh, I’ve seen worse.”
But Zernebog has been around to all of the regions, including Orre and its vast deserts. And he’d visited far more dangerous and twisted places in his time, including that one labyrinth back in October. It was hard to faze someone like him anymore. Unless of course, it was a certain conniving overpowered and overly-manipulative Psychic legendary but he wasn’t going to go into that.
That didn’t mean that he had to like the heat though. Well, at least it was dry heat, which was more tolerable and easier to shield oneself from by donning the appropriate attire. Humid heat like the one in Hoenn was a different kind of evil altogether, and there was something to be said about the sheer cruelty of volcanic heat that he always abhorred. Still, that didn’t stop him from wanting to try and finish this as fast as possible or by starting the dig in the late afternoon when the sun was setting and he had much less risk of heat stroke.
Zernebog looked at the three pokemon who were out of their pokeballs and were going to help him with this current dig of his. Hyperion, Atlas, and Achilles all looked at him with expectant expressions, waiting for him to give the command to start digging and looking for the good stuff buried underneath the wasteland. After all, the best stuff is usually in the desolate places, as Zernebog can personally attest to.
”Are you three ready?” Zernebog smirked as he watched the three of them nod. ”You remember the deal, right? The one who gets the best find gets their favorite food for a week straight.” The trio nodded again, much more eagerly this time.
”Great.” Zernebog cracked his knuckles and grinned. ”Now when I get to three, you all start digging. Make sure you don’t break anything, alright? I don’t want to have to explain why this place was destroyed or something and end up getting banned in the process.”
He then held up three fingers. ”One….” He lowered the first finger and watched his three pokemon tense.
”Two.” The three of them were crouched down now, claws at the ready as he put down the second finger.
”Three~” As soon as he said the word, the three of them started burrowing into the ground without a care, not even looking as Zernebog lowered his third finger. Hopefully their enthusiasm in digging will net them something great. He can always hope, can’t he?

By the Creation Trio, just what was taking them all so long?
Zernebog exhaled deeply through his nostrils as he sat down inside his tent. His hair was hanging down in front of his face, disheveled as well as strangely slick and shiny while having bits and pieces of sand clinging onto the strands. While half of his face couldn’t be seen, the clear droplets rolling down on the sides of his face and dripping from his jaw are good indicators of how bad his body was acclimatizing to the current environment.
In a gloved hand was Zernebog’s trusty bandana, which was completely soaked with the sweat from his brow. The glove that bore it was lightly dusted with a layer of sand and dirt, as well as old scratches and a severe amount of wear and tear from all of the time he had used it out in the wilderness and during training. Looking at his old, worn gloves reminded him to actually buy a nice new pair of gloves once he found something good and got out of this blasted hellhole. He actually had the funds for it what with all that he had been doing for these months. Maybe Kalos had some great gloves for climbing being sold somewhere. He’d have to look for those or ask around.
It might take a while though, since his pokemon had already been digging for over two hours with only brief breaks to show that they were still alive and kicking and hadn’t been eating by some unknown sand monster or something. But that was okay. He had his tent so he can wait even in this desert heat.
As it turned out though, he didn’t have to wait much longer.
Suddenly, a victorious roar cut through the clearing, causing a small smirk to form on Zernebog’s face. Looks like Hyperion won this round. Surprising considering that his competition were two pokemon designed by nature herself to dig and search underneath the ground, but it was something he had come to expect of the black dragon.
Wondering what he had found that actually warranted that roar, Zernebog crawled out of the tent without bothering to put his bandana back on and walked towards Hyperion, who has clutching something round in his claws.
”What do you have for me, Hyperion?” Zernebog asked as he stopped in front of Hyperion and looked at the strange, dusty, and large object in his claws. ”Something special?
Surprisingly, Hyperion nodded immediately, causing Zernebog to blink. ”You know what it is?”
The black Charizard shook his head, causing him to frown. ”You don’t.” He deadpanned. ”But you have a gut feeling that it’s very important?” The black dragon nodded again, causing Zernebog to sigh.
”Alright, fine. I’ll take a gamble on that gut of yours this time.” Zernebog chuckled. ”If you’re right, then you win the contest. Now go call the others so that we can have this cleaned out and checked, alright?”
