Technically, Zernebog had promised Ferris that he would finish the Orre Gym Circuit all those months ago. Ever since his small epiphany in the Safari Zone, he had intended to do just that. So what was he doing standing in front of the Pewter City Gym all the way in Kanto instead of challenging one of the other six gyms he hadn’t beaten yet?
Simple. The other leaders in that region were nowhere to be seen or refusing challenges. The sheer dearth of challenges in that region ticked him off something fierce, so he decided to take some time off from the Orre Gym Circuit and tackle another one. And where better to start than the region where his father made a name for himself?
”I wonder if this one’s gonna be ready….” Zernebog mused to himself as he stared at the door. ”I hope he’ll be as challenging as Gwyn or Ellie.”
He grinned. ”Well, there’s only one way to find out.” With that, he rapped his knuckles on the door five times to at least try and warn the people on the other side that he was coming.
Zernebog waited for a few more moments before pushing the doors open and walking inside anyway. No use in waiting to see if anyone was going to answer him. Who knew how big the gym was inside?
And he seemed to be right. It looked bigger on the inside than it did on the outside. Place looked simple and straightforward enough, so it didn’t look like he would have problems in challenging the Gym Leader without taking some ridiculous sidequest like a quiz or something.
With a shrug, he just walked forward for a little bit before finally calling out. ”Hello, is the Gym Leader here? I’d like to issue a Gym Challenge!”

Brock heard the doors open to his gym and heard the voice of a challenger. With a smirk, Brock walked up towards the challenger and stood on a platform. Snapping his fingers, the lights flicked on and focused on Brock. He jumped from his platform with ease and stood on the opposite side of the field. "Greetings. I hear you're looking for the gym leader?" The gym leader asked. With another snap from his fingers, the field began to appear. The battle field was a rocky terrain, large pillars of rock stood in the way, as well as smaller boulders that were easily movable by a Pokemon's strength.
"I'm the Pewter City gym leader, my name is Brock." He said. A small smile appeared on the man's face. "I think we both want to rush into battle, so I'll make this short and quick. Two Pokemon each on a one-on-one battle. No substitutions. Do you have any questions before we begin?" Brock asked. He had assumed that the challenger didn't want any small talk, and neither did he. He liked getting straight to buisiness and go right into a battle without any waiting. Small talk just wasn't his thing. "Since you are the challenger, you get to send your Pokemon out first."

Snap!
Zernebog looked up at the sound and saw that there was a brown haired man standing on a platform on the other side of the large room with the lights focused on him. He watched as the guy jumped from said platform and landed on opposite side of the field and asked him a question.
”Yeah, pretty much.” Zernebog shrugged.
With another snap of the man’s fingers, Zernebog could only blink as large pillars and boulders made out of stone emerged on the field, giving the entire place a rustic look. Now that was a cool trick. Maybe after he kicked the gym leader’s ass he could ask how he rigged the field to get that effect.
…which apparently would not take as long as he figured because the guy in front of him was the gym leader. Well, he already had an inkling that he was the guy with all of the spotlights shining on him, but he always liked to keep a little doubt in just in case he was wrong.
Despite the showy entrance, this guy seemed to be direct to the point. As expected of a rock-type gym leader. Good. Less fuss for him then.
”Nah, I’m good.” Zernebog smirked and shrugged.
Then the Gym Leader asked him to release his pokemon first. Okay, no problem. ”Alright.” Zernebog took out a pokeball from his belt and tossed it out onto the field.
A white light burst out from the ball, hitting the ground and solidifying into a large dark blue turtle with light blue ears and a long blue tail. ”Hydros will start off this little shindig then~”
The aforementioned Wartortle grinned in anticipation as he took up a fighting position. ”War!”
Post by Amber Kazuki on Feb 7, 2014 10:44:14 GMT -5
Brock watched as the Wartortle was released from it's Pokeball. A Pokemon Brock was used to seeing. He usually saw Wartortle from newer Trainers who have just gotten their starter not too long ago. It was a fight he was used to. "Okay then, let's get started, shall we?" Brock said as he tossed a Pokeball onto the field. Released from it was a Geodude. It flexed it's arms as it hovered above the ground and made a battle cry as it saw its opponent. "Geosix, start off with a Stealth Rock. Then use Magnitude."
The Geodude rushed into battle. It used its power to send rocks over to the Wartortle's side of the field. The rocks buried themselves into the ground and appeared to be waiting for something. After that, the Geodude slammed his fists into the ground, causing the field to shake violently. "A Magnitude 8, very nice." Brock said out loud. The field was shaking violently, the rock pillers were cracking as the Magnitude went off.

A Geodude. Considering where he was right now, he wasn’t surprised in the least. They were common in almost every region and it would make sense that Brock would have one of those. However, he wasn’t in the mood to give a snarky comment so he just waited for the gym leader to make the first move.
The very instant that the words from Brock’s mouth reached Zernebog’s ears, he resisted the urge to make a scathing comment about the Geodude’s name and wasted no time in giving orders of his own.
”Give ‘em hell from above!” Despite the fact that it sounded like an order one would give to a Flying-type instead of a Water-type, neither Zernebog nor Hydros looked confused by it at all.
As the Geodude was sending rocks onto the field, thick and dark clouds escaped from Hydros’ mouth and started to spiral up to the ceiling. He didn’t even flinch as the huge jagged rocks buried themselves onto the ground.
Hydros then jumped up as the last of the thick clouds escaped from his mouth, timing it just as soon as the Geodude’s fists slammed onto the ground. As the Wartortle ascended, the ceiling above became completely covered with dark clouds and started to release thick sheets of rain onto the entire battlefield.
As the rain poured on the large turtle’s form, slowing his ascent in the process, he opened his mouth and fired off a large ring of water from his mouth that extended outwards as fast-moving wave that was headed towards the Geodude. Hopefully it would hit and take away a good chunk of his health away. If not, well… he had other options.

Brock and Geosix glanced up at the ceiling above, watching as rain clouds appeared within the gym walls. The Wartortle jumped up from the ground, avoiding the Magnitude, and launching a powerful Water Pulse towards Geosix. Brock had to react quickly. "Geosix, quickly, use Rock Tomb and shield yourself!" Brock yelled out. The Geodude quickly responded, punching the ground with his fists and summoning a tomb of rock. The Rock Tomb appeared around the Geodude, but the Water Pulse was extremely powerful. It blasted the rock and the Geodude inside, however, he managed to avoid some of the damage. But still appeared weak after the attack.
It wasn't new to Brock, to say the least. Water types were always coming to his gym, but he had adapted a bit. They were still a challenge to beat, nonetheless. "Use Rock Blast now. And make it count." Brock said. The Geodude obeyed and punched his fists into the ground yet again, this time he took out a part of the field and tossed it at the Wartortle. One large rock flew after the other, resulting in four Rock Blasts being used. When Brock said make it count he meant it, because he felt like this battle was going to be short.

Zernebog wasn’t bothered in the least about the weak attempt at a shield that the Geodude tried to put up. The reason for that became obvious when the pulse of water easily shredded through the rock barrier and slammed through the Geodude, causing him to smirk.
But the trouble wasn’t over yet. As Hydros began his descent from the sky like the rain that now constantly fell, the Geodude started throwing stones at him. He wasn’t nearly as maneuverable as some of his other teammates, especially not in the air of all places, so dodging them all was out. He remembered a very important piece of advice his trainer gave him while they were training back in Sinnoh.
If you can’t go with the flow and dodge, then break through it with force! With that in mind, Hydros opened his mouth and unleashed an enormous torrent of water that propelled him back upwards and easily broke through all four of the stones sent his way while propelling up further into the rain clouds and the ceiling.
The weakened, yet still powerful torrent of water blasted towards the Geodude at a very quick speed. Hydros kept it up for a second before finally cutting off the flow and staring right at the Geodude below with a frown.
”Another Water Pulse for some assurance.” Despite the fact that Zernebog didn’t shout it, his voice still rang loud and clear through the heavy rains.
Hydros wasn’t one to disappoint so he fired off another ring of water from his mouth that turned into a wave that moved swiftly towards the Geodude as well. Let’s see it try to get up from that!

Geosix stood no chance against the Wartortle. It blocked it's Rock Blast and another Water Pulse smacked it in the face. Geosix rolled towards Brock, unconscious and groaning. Brock returned the Geodude to it's Pokeball and smiled. "Good work, Geosix. Take a rest." Brock placed his Pokeball away and looked across to Zenrebog. "Well done, Geosix put up a good fight but your Wartortle was stronger. But let's see how he fairs against my next Pokemon." Brock tossed out another Pokeball onto the field, and released was a Kabutops. It sliced the air with it's claws and glanced at the Wartortle. Since Kabutops was half Water, half Rock, he would have no problem against this Wartortle. Plus, the Rain Dance also helped his moves as well.
"Kabutops, let's show them a thing or two. Metal Sound into Ancient Power." Brock commanded. The Kabutops obeyed quickly, and slammed its claws together. A screeching sound echoed through the gym, if the Wartortle was hit it would greatly reduce it's special defense. Kabutops then sliced it's claws into the ground and they glowed with a purple aura. Suddenly, the ground around him began to rumble and chucks of the field were taken out. He took his claw out and pointed it at the Wartortle, the rocks followed his direction and were aimed at the Wartortle.

As expected, the Geodude fell under Hydros’ final assault, earning Zernebog the first win of the round. All was as it should be.
”Good job, Hydros.” Zernebog muttered as Hydros walked back to him with a small, smug grin on his face. ”Just one more.”
Speaking of one more, Brock had released his second pokemon while he was talking to his own pokemon, forcing him to gesture to Hydros to turn around and face the Kabutops that was bearing down at his Wartortle with his menacing scythe-claws. Considering that a close friend of his had a Kabutops as well, he knew a little bit of what to possibly expect out of this one despite the fact that it was very rare to see one in person.
A pity that he didn’t have Erebus out for this one though. He would’ve scared the life out of this one like he had eaten the other one in the ruins back in that far away region he used to work for. But he’ll just have to make do with annihilating it with Hydros.
Zernebog snapped out of his thoughts the instant he heard Brock make his first orders. Not that he would have been able to focus with the infernal racket that suddenly erupted from the Kabutop’s claws, forcing Hydros’ ears to droop and for Zernebog to hold his own while gritting his teeth. As soon as that racket was over, the Kabutops wasted no time in firing rocks at him- Ancientpower if he remembered the last thing he heard right before that horrible noise.
Hydros didn’t need any prompting in order to block it with a large ring from his mouth that turned into a wave of water that easily blocked the Ancientpower. He then followed it up with a beam of pure cold and ice that was aimed at the floor near the Kabutop’s feet, covering the soaked, water-covered ground under it in a sheet of thick ice that was probably extremely hard to move in if one was unpracticed in it. Once the ice sheet was big enough, the Wartortle turned towards the Kabutops and fired off another fast ring of water towards the Kabutops that turned into a wave and became even faster halfway through.
Let’s see it deal with this!

The Wartortle was strong, it kept blocking Brock's attacks from afar. Maybe it was time for a different approach to this Pokemon then. However, before Brock could make a move, the field was suddenly covered in ice. Kabutops was taken off guard began slipping on the ice, but he managed to dug his sharp claws into the ice to help him stay on foot. But a sudden Water Pulse hit him from across the field and knocked him off balanced. The Kabutops managed to dig his claw into a frozen pillar and stand up. He glared at the Wartortle, and appeared to have a revenge look in his eyes.
"Very well then, if we can't attack from a far we'll just get up close. Aqua Jet to close the distance and use Mega Drain." Brock said. Kabutops obeyed by summoning a cloak of water around him. He jumped off from the ground and flew towards the Wartortle. The Rain Dance applied to his moves as well, but that's not what he was attacking with. He flew past the Wartortle and curved back around, jumping out from the Aqua Jet and trying to slice his claws at the Wartortle. This time Kabutops' claws were glowing with a odd green light. If the move had hit, he would have sucked some of the energy right back. Brock knew this would deal a good amount of damage, as the Wartortle was a Water type, Mega Drain was a grass type move and Metal Sound had hit from earlier. He had this planned out.

Most beginners would cheer when they scored a hit, especially against something that was as nimble as a Kabutops. More overzealous ones would even do a little victory dance to commemorate it. But Zernebog wasn’t overzealous or a beginner, so he settled for a small smirk instead. Besides, just because he scored a hit didn’t mean that it was over, especially since this one wasn’t weak to Water types like the living boulder.
Cynical words, but they were swiftly proven correct when the Brock gave his next set of orders. There was nothing he could do about Hydros being able to move away from the set-up in time since he was one of his slower pokemon, but he had other tricks in his sleeves in order to make up for his pokemon’s lack of maneuverability. Something deadly. ”Hydros! Situation Sigma!”
To his credit, Hydros kept his poker face on when he had heard his trainer issue that tactic to be carried out so early into the second battle. There was no use in panicking now. He just had to face the blades of death head-on.
Hydros was so determined that he didn’t even flinch or blink as the Kabutops blasted past him. Instead, he turned around to keep the Kabutops in his field of sight, which resulted in him seeing the Kabutops curve back around and get out of the Aqua Jet, blades gleaming green as they approached him. The Wartortle stared the blades down, determined to take a stand despite having been struck by the Metal Sound earlier. In the last few moments before he was hit, when he was sure that there was no way that the Kabutops could change his course, the Wartortle’s body took on a beautiful, mirror-like sheen.
The impact of the sickly-green blades hurt like an angry Hera’s Thunderpunch even through his plastron, but it was worth it to see the damage he had gained from the Mega Drain be reflected right back onto the Kabutops in a burst of green energy as soon as its blades hit him and dug into his plastron. That sort of strike would be almost impossible to dodge given that the reflected attack was given at point-blank range.
But of course, there must always be an assurance. That was why Hydros pushed back the urge to scream in pain and opened his mouth to fire off a jet-stream of water right at the Kabutops while it was still in the same vicinity he was after the reflected attack was launched, hoping that their closeness would be enough to make this hit and KO it with the help of the reflected attack. While the Wartortle was unleashing the torrent, three rings of water formed around him and went up and down from his body after the mirror-like sheen faded from his body, healing it slightly from the painful drain.

Neither of them saw it coming. Brock noticed it at the last second before it was too late. The Wartortle had covered itself in a shiny coat, right as the Mega Drain hit. Kabutops felt the power bounce right back at him, and it caused him to drop to his knees. The move had doubled in damage, but thanks to the healing of Mega Drain he managed to stay in the battle. Then, the Kabutops noticed the Wartortle readying another Hydro Pump. Without hesitating, he dashed out with an Aqua Jet and reappeared on the opposite side of the field. The Hydro Pump missing him by an inch.
Brock nodded. The Wartortle was strong, but Kabutops was faster and stronger. One attack should do it, and the Wartortle couldn't Mirror Coat this one. Judging by the way it was standing, he knew it was extremely weak at this point. One Mega Drain and it was done for, there was no chance for him to counter with a Mirror Coat. "Again, Mega Drain." Brock commanded from across the field.
The Kabutops obeyed and dashed across the icy field, his claws dug into the ice and provided him traction. Getting up close, he slashed at the Wartortle again with his claws. The tips were glowing green, and if the move had hit the Mega Drain would most likely finish him off and heal the Kabutops. Just in time for the final battle.

Zernebog was honestly surprised that the Kabutops wasn’t out cold by the Mirror Coat doing its grisly job on it by reflecting it back. To make matters worse, the Hydro Pump missed its target because the Kabutops used Aqua Jet to get the heck out of dodge. So it seemed that his gamble failed if the ancient pokemon was still left standing.
To a casual observer, it might’ve looked like Zernebog was actually on the ropes with Brock ordering the Kabutops to deliver what looked like the finishing blow. In fact, one might even say that he was on the verge of defeat. They would be wrong. He still had a couple of tricks up his sleeve before he would even think about the possibility of losing.
”Evasive maneuvers!” Zernebog commanded, placing a slight emphasis on the last syllable and drawing it out.
In response, Hydros jumped up into the air as the Kabuto closed in and then tilted so that it looked like he was about to swim on air. He withdrew his heads and all of his limbs while curling his tail around his plastron and then began spinning at high speeds, shooting off at high speeds and dodging the sickly-green scythe blades by mere inches.
Then after gaining some distance from the Kabutops, the spinning brown, beige, and white shell suddenly started spewing out a massive amount of water from all of main limb openings of the shell as well as the head, creating an enormous spinning ring of water around the entire arena. Within moments, the ring turned into a large vortex of water that filled with entire arena with the Wartortle at the center. As he spun, three small rings of water went up and down again to heal him some more.
Zernebog’s eyes narrowed as he quickly got out of the arena area as best as he could without getting out of the room. If this didn’t catch the Kabutops and knock it out, then he was going to have to resort to drastic measures. Again.

The Wartortle and Trainer surprised Brock and his Kabutops once again. The Wartortle managed to use its speed effectively and withdraw into its shell. The Kabutops missed by an inch and slammed into the icy ground behind, digging his claws in. He glanced back and grunted at the impact. The darn Pokemon wouldn't give up. And Brock seemed to like the spirit, as he nodded his head in approval. Then, the Wartortle did something unexpected. After withdrawing into his shell, he spin in the air and created a large water vortex. Brock jumped out of the way to the edge of the room and shielded his eyes from the vortex. The water was creeping up onto the Kabutops, but he had one more trick up his sleeve as well.
The Kabutops dug his claws into the icy ground and found where the rock and dirt was, then suddenly slammed his claws into the ground. The Kabutops created a large hole in the ground and quickly jumped in before the water covered the field. The hole in the ground drained the water, and it was coming fast at him. He dug his way quickly through the ground. The water was close behind, and draining quickly in the room. Finally, he knew where his mark was. With the water close behind, the Kabutops dug straight up towards the spinning Wartortle. He attempted to hit the Wartortle from underneath with his claws, and then tried to fall away as the water followed him from below.

After what seemed like an eternity, the rain finally stopped falling. Zernebog only noticed because the rain had stopped adding more water to the spin and the dark clouds above finally started clearing up. He couldn’t feel the rain anymore because he was soaked to the bone and not caring a whit even though it was still winter. Winters in Kanto were not nearly as cold as winters in Sinnoh even while waterlogged, so he didn’t care.
Besides, he was too busy with other things. Like, you know, noticing that the water from the vortex was starting to drain towards a hole like a large shower drain.
Wait. What?
”HYDROS! STOP!” Zernebog raised his voice to a full shout for the first time in this battle.
Immediately, the vortex died down. A lot of water splashed down onto the ground as the brown shell in the middle finally became visible as it slowed down and started to slow rotation. Hydros’ head and limbs popped out of the shell as he started to fall, which was enough time to let him see the ice-covered ground begin to bulge up and open.
This allowed Hydros enough time to gather up water into his mouth as he fell to meet whatever was inside while slowing down rotation even more. He had completely stopped rotating by the time the Kabutops emerged and lunged at him from the ground, allowing him to build up a little more until he was sure that the thing couldn’t dodge.
Then he fired off a massive torrent of water of his mouth a few moments before the claws reached his plastron, pushing up him up and away from the Kabutops and if it couldn’t dodge, probably push it away from himself as well. He held this torrent up for a few seconds before shutting it off and taking a deep breath. Then he exhaled thick, dark clouds from his mouth and covered the ceiling with it again as these clouds restarted the rain, and therefore his advantage as well.
While still airborne, the Wartortle took the opportunity to fire off a ring of water from his mouth that turned into a very fast-moving wave that was aimed right at the Kabutops, hoping to finish this off before this really turned into a battle of attrition. One way or another he was going to annihilate this bug and stop his trainer’s one pokemon-streak from being broken.
And as he did so, three almost-invisible rings ran over his form for a moment, restoring his health a bit more….
