Tick. Tick. Tock. Tick. Whir. Click.
The sounds of various sorts of metal contraptions filled Zernebog’s ears as he stepped into the building after knocking on the door loudly. Normally they would annoy him, but after being surrounded by scornful whispers and hostile glares for what seemed like hours on end since he’d arrived, he more than welcomed the change. There were just some forms of attention even he couldn’t appreciate… at least not anymore.
Sheesh, aren’t these people used to outsiders anyway? The way they received him, it was as if they wanted to throw him out as fast as possible. It was just his luck that the first town that he stayed at in his new region for more than a few hours would be filled with crazy and hostile people… or probably just xenophobic people or something. They were just as unwelcoming as this terrible desert weather that this blasted region seemed to have even in October. They can take their hate and shove it because he wasn’t going to play nice if they weren’t.
The white haired trained closed the door quietly behind him and really took in the sight of the place. Barren was the first word that came to mind, what with only a floor with the League-parameter markings on it and a large dome above them. It made him wonder just where all of those sounds were coming from, really. Were they underground or something or did the gym leader just put them in for the ambience?
To a man who spent most of his life in the wilderness, the sight of all of the concrete and steel was far from comforting. He preferred the musty smell of old, crumbling stone ruins, the fresh earthly smell of the jungle, and especially the harsh, biting cold that scraped and chilled the lungs, robbing the body of precious heat. He may have been a daredevil that loved change and variety, but there were just some things that even he wanted to cling onto for comfort… not that he’ll ever admit it of course but that was the principle of the thing.
Well, he wasn’t here to admire the décor anyways, so he really shouldn’t care what was in here. He was here to issue a challenge. He supposed that he had to try to be polite at least.
”Excuse me?” Zernebog’s voice echoed off of the steel walls as he stared at the vast ring. ”Is anyone home? I’m here for the Gym Challenge.”
From her office space in the back she had heard he was here. She had calmly gotten up from her seat, turning the lamp on her desk off and turning the head away. No need to keep this thing on when she would be busy outside, especially if this was a challenger. She took a moment to look herself over in the dim light, using a door mirror she happened to have. After adjusting her business suit, she exited the room slowly, walking out and down the hall that led to the main gym floor.
Her lithe physique came walking out of the shadows on the right side of the gym, possibly catching her challenger off guard. Long tempered hair fell onto her left shoulder as she stood for a moment, observing him with her hands in her suit pockets. "I believe you're looking for me." She lightly called this out, then proceeded to go forward and end the gap between them as she sized him up. Standing at her own 5'11", she was pretty much on par with this guy, although her iron gaze couldn't dare match his predatory gaze. It was a good, strong look - the look of someone that could give her a thrilling battle, it seemed. A hand reached up and adjusted her tie briefly as she took in a quick breath.
"Welcome to the Hassun Gym. Gwyneth Ferris, at your service. I run the gym." She placed one knuckled hand firmly on her hip, ever so slightly placing weight on her left leg as her other hand stuck to her pocket. "Standard gym challenge here is a two on two, no substitutions. Assuming you're fine with all of this, we can get this show on the road." Sure, normally she'd try to haggle someone into a bet or two to help improve the itch for the best fight she could give, but... there was something about this guy. He wasn't just strong. He had something else in him that he was bound to show if she pulled it out of him.

“I believe you you’re looking for me.”
Sharp gold eyes snapped towards the right at the sound of a woman’s voice penetrating through the background noise like a knife. They kept focus on the woman, assessing her as she approached. From what these eyes could see, she had a smooth confident stride, hints of what seemed to be a lithe but powerful frame in a business suit, and a steely gaze. Aside from the suit, she was everything he’d expected from a steel-type gym leader.
If first impressions were to be believed, then he was likely to have one hell of a time here. At the thought, the predatory gleam in his eyes intensified.
Perfect.
Zernebog watched her adjust her tie and then welcome him to the gym quietly, waiting for her to finish. Once she had levied down the rules for the gym, he finally allowed a small smirk to show up on his face. Short and to the point. He liked this one already!
”Sure. I got no problem with that.” Zernebog shrugged. ”Thanks for the welcome, by the way. Name’s Zernebog Romanov.”
He waved a hand to the gym’s battle area. ”Ladies first?” He then used the same hand to tap himself on the chest. ”Or am I gonna have to start this party?”
She could pick up on his energy from the conversation as she spoke, feeding off of his rising tide of energy. This Romanov guy was certainly going to be a handful in the best of ways. She had grown accustomed to new trainers who she used the gym battles as a form of lesson for, helping shape their strategies and plans and overall helping to improve them as trainers. This Zernebog would not be one of those. Here was a predator who already knew combat, and so she would seek to match and resist as he sought to overcome her iron will.
She grinned and turned as he waved at the gym, her ponytail whipping from the several points that it made as a natural part. She took a few steps towards what would be her side of the field, her right hand making a practiced movement of dipping into her coat and retrieving a Pokeball. She pulled the hand out to her side as she finished walking before whirring in place in rhythm with the machinery sounds around them. She placed her other hand on her hip as she held the Pokeball out. "Let's go, Jarvis. Up and at them."
The red light shot out towards the middle of the field, and in its place a Pawniard formed, slicing at the air as he landed. The blade jutting from his head gave off a slight glare as he stood straight up, arms still at the ready. This little guy's whole body was a weapon, loaded at the ready for any kind of offense imaginable. Steady eyes from both Pokemon and Trainer watched Zerne.
"You may have the first move." It was a calm voice as both of her hands entered her suit pockets, her posture seeming to be relaxed as the excitement of the prospective battle settled in. She had a habit of remaining as calm as ever during a battle, reflecting the tempered steel she respected and modeled her fighting style after. This was going to be a proper Gym Battle alright, and if it was Zerne's first, he'd be in for a treat.

Okay. The small walking blade-shop looks pretty cool.
Zernebog didn’t know what the pokemon was or what it could do since the people around here refused to give him any details of the pokemon. Heck, he was lucky to just be able to get the directions to the gym without starting a fight or something given how hostile the normal citizens were. However, what he did know was that it had to be a steel-type since this was a steel gym, and that he probably favoured cutting moves if its blade-hands and pointy body are any indication.
”Alrighty then~” Zernebog grinned when he’d heard that the woman was giving him the first move without even seeing or asking what he was going to use. She didn’t look like the type to underestimate people, but just in case she was then she was about to be proven horribly wrong.
The white haired trainer took out a pokeball from his belt and tossed it up in an almost lazy fashion. ”It’s show time, Achilles.” He declared as the ball opened up and released a bright light from within. The light quickly took on the shape of something small, pudgy, and vaguely reptilian before clearing up to reveal a blue and orange reptile with stubby arms, a large fin with a notch on his head, and a huge mouth set in wide grin.
”Gi gi gi!” Achilles’ dark eyes were sharp and focused as they stared down at the strange red metal humanoid creature before him.
Zernebog put his hand on his chin and pretended to ponder his first move. ”Now to set the mood… how about some rock n’ roll, Achilles?”
At the order, Achilles stomped on the ground. The entire floor started to shake extremely violently as soon as the stomp landed, which would make most people standing on the floor feel very unstable as they tried to steady themselves from the powerful vibrations. In fact it was only through lots of practice and experience with that particular move that Zernebog was able to stand without stumbling or even bracing himself, looking for all the world like he was standing on steady ground.
Achilles then stomped two more times, but instead of adding to the vibrations that were already tearing through the floors of the gym, a pointed stone emerged from the ground and launched itself at the Pawniard very swiftly. If by chance it managed to dodge or block the first shot, then there was also another stone that was launched by the Gible’s third stomp from the side also headed towards Pawniard quickly at another angle to contend with.
{Battle Summary}Achilles launches an Earthquake, followed by two Stone Edge attacks from different angles. I'm not sure if it matters, but the Stone Edge moves have 12.5% chance of being critical hits.
So the man with the brilliant-colored hair sent out a Dragon-type. She eyed the Gible, watching it almost as intently as her Pawniard. Her mind scrolled over what info she did know about it - it was a Dragon-type, it eventually became Garchomp who was an extremely fearsome Pokemon in its own right, and that these things loved to bite. She'd have to keep this information in mind and watch out for things like Thunder Fang. However, that wasn't the most pressing concern.
Zernebog seemed to contemplate his move as the Pokemon stared each other down, with Jarvis lightly dragging one blade across the other. Suddenly it was time to rock and roll as the Gible launched an Earthquake, somewhat catching Ferris off guard as she split her legs, bracing herself rather quickly before giving her order. "Jarvis! Iron Defense, let's go!" The Pawniard, who had taken a stumbling step back, seemed to nod and then planted its left foot down hard, a shiny sheen starting there and working its way up quickly as the Pokemon hardened its armor, taking the brunt of the Earthquake. However, as he seemed to steady himself, the Stone Edge rocked his way.
"Dodge it!" The Pawniard seemed to shift to the side in an exaggerated sidestep, dodging the first one. However, the second one was coming in to quickly, and without being ordered to do so Pawniard put on its attack stance for Metal Claw and swiped, smashing into the rock. It seemed to shatter around Jarvis harmlessly, although the force of his own attack wasn't enough to deter any damage he took on his arms. Jarvis reassumed an attack stance, with both arms at the ready. "Go on the offensive."
Jarvis leaped to the right before using the landing as a kickoff, dashing at Gible with a Night Slash prepped and ready to release the moment it got close enough, launching the crescent blade of dark energy diagonally at the creature. Jarvis was pretty good at swiftly assaulting; it would be interesting to see what the trainer and his Gible would do.

Two out of three was good. Better than Zernebog thought he’d get for Achilles’ opening salvo, at any rate. It was good to see that the red metal pokemon was tough enough to weather what was probably a super-effective earthquake and partial damage from Stone Edge. Granted, he’d already figured that she’d use something like Iron Defense to soften the blow though, but it was still a smart move on her part.
Now as the vibrations from the Earthquake his pokemon launched ceased, the red steel pokemon finally launched an offensive with what looked like a dark move from the way it was glowing. Looks like it was time to dig in a little bit deeper into his bag of tricks.
”Block and then use the Shoryuken, Achilles!” Zernebog called out, still smirking despite the attack.
”Gi!” Instead of taking a step back, Achilles charged forward with a glowing claw and cut through the crescent blade of dark energy easily. The Gible then continued rushing towards the Pawniard. Given how near it was, it only took a couple of steps before the purple dragon was able to launch himself into a jumping and spinning uppercut with another glowing claw that was aimed right at the Pawniard’s chin.
The big surprise though came when vicious winds suddenly erupted from the Gible’s body as it left the ground and quickly whipped up into a full-blown twister before the Gible could fully ascend. Both Zernebog and Achilles were hoping that the unorthodox tactic would be enough to be able to hit the steel pokemon full force with both attacks.
{Battle Summary}Achilles blocks the Night Slash with a Dragon Claw, and then launches a Shoryuken Dragon Claw + Twister combo right at Jarvis. Twister has
The attack was an excellent counter to her Night Slash, easily overpowering the attack. Ferris felt herself lean forward a bit, eager to get closer to the action. Things were really heating up and it was still in the opening salvo of the match. Jarvis seemed to be matching the Gible's charge with a pair of glowing claws, ready to swipe with a Metal Claw attack. The spinning target came closer and closer and Jarvis leaped himself, ready to meet the opponent in the air.
. . . and then he did that. Ferris was almost taken aback at the combination move as Pawniard turned his attack into a defense, trying to use the force of the Metal Claw to cut through the Twister. He was getting pushed back but it seemed to be diffusing the damage until the Dragon Claw smashed him right in the chin, forcing him back and allowing the rest of the Twister attack to hit. Jarvis had a bit of air time in a slow arc before he managed to right himself and land on the ground on one foot, one knee, blades sticking into the ground to help right himself. Ferris felt a grin spread across her face at the unorthodox tactic. "Not bad! But we've got tricks of our own. Jarvis! Show them what defense can do!"
Jarvis dashed forward, arms by his side, as if preparing another Metal Claw or Night Slash. However, as he dashed in a zig-zag pattern to his target and got within ten steps, he threw up a Protect - a translucent hexagonal barrier forming a foot ahead of Jarvis, ready to smash into the Gible and rely on its size and unexpectedness to knock it around and off balance so he could land a real Metal Claw attack.

"Not bad! But we've got tricks of our own. Jarvis! Show them what defense can do!"
Defense?
Gold eyes narrowed at her words even as the steel pokemon started charging towards Achilles using a zigzag pattern. Does she mean Iron Defense? Or something else…?
Achilles’ readied his claws to intercept the next attack, more than ready to duke it out with the Pawniard. However, all plans of using that attack wet up into smoke when a translucent barrier appeared in front of the Gible, causing both human and pokemon’s eyes to go wide for the first time in this fight.
Knowing that there was no way for Achilles to penetrate the barrier, Zernebog’s smirk grew a little bit wider. ”Achilles! Underground now!”
Achilles would’ve dived the moment he heard the order, but the barrier was too close for it to dodge. The small land shark was knocked over by the barrier, but instead of resisting he let his body move with the force, letting himself flip over and starting waving his arms around while upside-down. He used the momentum from his waving arms to dodge the steel pokemon’s blade-hands by mere centimetres before diving head-first into the ground and digging into it easily, tunnelling into the ground and disappearing into it within moments.
Zernebog then turned his eyes towards Gwyneth and the steel pokemon, idly wondering what they were going to do about an opponent and attack that could come from anywhere in the arena.
Ferris' grin was showing loud and proud when the Protect charge worked, although not entirely - it would have been nice to see the Metal Claw score a hit but it wasn't meant to be as the dragon bugger smashed his way into the floor. Dammit, she just fixed all that up from the last Dig-happy challenger. Jarvis seemed to land from his attack just near the entrance hole, and Ferris wasn't going to send little Alice down it for a trip of a life time. Most Diggers did it in such a way that it was hard to pursue unless you also had the move.
"Jarvis! Iron Defense, ready yourself!" The Pawniard nodded and the sheen once again appeared, further solidifying his defenses. He kneeled down onto one knee, crossing his arms. They both seemed to charge different things now - one seemed alight with the dark energy of a Night Slash, and his left was glowing with the odd sheen of a Metal Claw. In this position, it would be easier to present himself not only as a smaller target, but giving himself a chance to turn the different angles and counterattack - and if Gible came from directly below, he ideally would have enough time to tuck and roll to the side, using the force of a Night Slash to help propel himself. It wasn't the best defense, but Jarvis was still getting the hang of Protect and she couldn't risk relying on any one move.

The atmosphere was tense as Gwyneth ordered her Pawniard to bunker up and prepare for a possible physical assault. Well, for them anyway. Zernebog looked perfectly calm as he watched them with his ever-present smirk in place.
For a second, Zernebog was tempted to order Achilles to create a sink hole in the battlefield, but then he remembered something very important. The Under was an abandoned mine, which meant that he wasn’t entirely sure how stable the entire city was. He had already been pushing it with his pokemon’s Earthquake attacks because Gwyneth didn’t seem worried about it, but he wasn’t sure how a sinkhole would affect the integrity of the Gym’s structure or how it would affect the city as a whole given the Gym’s place in The Under. Was he really going to risk the lives of everyone in the vicinity for a victory?
Old Zernebog would have scoffed and immediately said yes. For him, only the goal mattered and it would justify any means that he might use. However, he wasn’t that man anymore. He didn’t want to kill people anymore unless it was in self-defense.
He could still feel the small voice in his head, urging him to do it even as he tapped his foot on the ground three times rapidly in the guise of impatience. He was strong. He could resist it. He’d changed, after all.
Underneath the ground, Achilles felt the tremors that came from Zernebog’s foot. With a devious grin, the small land shark began eagerly digging towards where he had felt the Pawniard move. Once he was directly under it, he made the ground under him thin but made sure that it still supported the steel pokemon and made sure that it would feel any vibrations from his actions.
Achilles then took a huge inhale, letting the flames build up in its stomach before unleashing a powerful stream of flames that easily burst through the ground and headed towards the Pawniard very quickly. The Gible was counting on the extremely small amount of distance between them to cut down on the risks of it dodging, which will enable him to perform his next move.
After a second, the Gible turned off the flames and jumped out of the new hole with a glowing claw that was aimed right at the Pawniard’s face. Hopefully it was still too distracted by the flames to try and dodge the hit.
{Battle Summary} Achilles uses a Flamethrower to attack Jarvis and open up a hole. Flamethrower has a 10% chance of inflicting a burn. He then jumps out of the hole and attacks Jarvis with Dragon Claw, which makes this a Dig + Dragon Claw combo.
Ferris' hand hit her pocket and started messing with her lucky coins as the battle grew in intensity. This Zernebog was willing to pull out all of the stops and use his full arsenal of tricks. She would have to rely on Jarvis and his battle experiences for this portion of the battle. With no way to hear or feel the digging dragon, the ball was entirely in his section of the park now.
Jarvis himself had closed his eyes, relying on what he felt as he continued his attack-fueled defense. He didn't quite sense the ground beneath him become messed with, but the sudden surged of heat gave him a warning and he attacked back with a Night Slash, briefly slicing in the flames and parting them around him. However, this was only momentary as the last half of the flames engulfed him, with Jarvis crossing his arms in front of himself to try and bear the brunt of the attack. As he was lightly pushed back from the attack, the Gible came up for an uppercut.
Jarvis took this moment to shine, quickly ducking back - made easier from being pushed back from the Flamethrower attack - and went to turn the attack against the young dragon, firing off two more Night Slashes into the midsection as the Gible was close, aiming to score hits since the majority of Jarvis' assaults had failed against the nimble land shark.
Summary: Night Slash to try and alleviate the Flamethrower; dodged and fired off two more Night Slash

Upon seeing the two Night Slashes headed Achilles’ way, Zernebog’s eyes widened. Though his smirk remained firmly in place, he knew that there was absolutely no way that Achilles could dodge those shots while in mid-air. His body wasn’t made for aerial manoeuvrability- he was a ground type for Arceus’ sakes! This meant that he had to get creative.
”Achilles, blast off!” To anyone else, that might’ve sounded like a very bizarre order to give to a Gible, but Zernebog definitely knew what he was doing.
Achilles quickly turned his head to the side and let loose another powerful stream of flames. However, it wasn’t aimed at anything in particular. Instead, he imitated a rocket and moved his body to the side very quickly using his flames, managing to dodge both Night Slashes by a literal hairsbreadth in the process. The Gible then landed on the ground with a heavy thud, setting off another a second round of extremely violent tremors to run throughout the floor. Hopefully, it would make the Pawniard unsteady enough to be unable to respond to his next attack.
That next attack came in the form of large and very pointy rock that emerged from the ground behind the Pawniard that was slightly to the left instead of directly behind it, which was summoned by a powerful stomp from the small dragon pokemon. The large pointed stone rocketed towards the Pawniard’s side, with both Zernebog and Achilles hoping that it would be enough to take the Pawniard out of the fight and remove the first obstacle towards the badge and the win.
{Battle Summary} Achilles dodges the two Night Slashes by using Flamethrower to propel him away while in midair. Once on the ground again, he launches Earthquake and Stone Edge.
Now that was a clever tactic. The dark energy from the Night Slash volleys cut through the flames as the Gible dodged, leading Jarvis to continue the motion of tracking his target with a vault - a jump that had a very unstable landing due to the Earthquake in effect. Jarvis teetered to the side for a moment, but this allowed the Stone Edge to rocket towards him uncomfortably fast. He threw up the last Iron Defense he could muster, the sheen coating his crossed arms as the rock smashed into him, knocking him back a good foot. The blow, however, was less than what the Gible could have wanted.
The very moment the rock was shattering around him he attacked, shoving himself forward with more speed than previously shown as the young Pokemon reached into his adrenaline reserves. A pinpointed Metal Claw jabbed right into the center mass of the Gible, aiming to smash it with the sharp metal blade with the speedy assault. He slashed a few more times with just his bare blades, slashing in an over the top fashion, as if telegraphing his pattern of wide sweeps...
And then the uppercut of a Night Slash, coming in from an odd swooping angle as the Pawniard aimed to keep the Gible distracted with his right hand up high. Ferris grinned - Jarvis was pulling out more underhanded tactics in order to secure the win.

Achilles didn’t have the time to grin in satisfaction at his Stone Edge striking successfully as the Pawniard charged at him with a blade right at his center of mass. Instead of grinning, the Gible inhaled quickly and waited until the Pawniard was fully commited to the move. Once the land shark was sure that he was, he let off another powerful stream of flames right at the charging steel pokemon in order to block the Metal Claw.
However, at this point Achilles figured out that he was too stubborn to just roll over and faint already, so his claws started to glow in anticipation of the other pokemon’s next move. His large eyes kept track of the wide sweeping motions that the pokemon was making in patterns that he could recognize, making him focus on them just in case it might hit him. However, he was so focused on them that he didn’t notice the real attack- the Night Slash uppercut.
Fortunately for Achilles, Zernebog to figure out what the Pawniard’s actual objective was when he saw the beginnings of a powered uppercut at a weird angle from where he was standing. However, the move was coming from an angle that couldn’t be reached by his dragon’s stubby arms just by moving or stretching, so he settled for something else.
”Achilles, Shoryuken 8 o’ clock!” Immediately, Achilles jumped up to that direction with a spinning uppercut using a glowing claw, but not before pain erupted from his other arm due to being hit by the Night Slash. However, the Gible used the extremely close proximity to his advantage to try and land his uppercut even as the winds around his body turned into another massive twister right as the strike landed, hoping that it would actually hit and put the creature out of the fight.
{Battle Summary} Achilles counters Metal Claw with Flamethrower and continues on towards the Pawniard with more than half of its power intact due to fire being supereffective against steel, which cut Metal Claw's power in half against it. Achilles is hit by Night Slash before attacking with another Shoryuken Twister + Dragon Claw combo.
