“Alright!” Ramona cheered, planting her fist into an open palm as a sign of eagerness. The Gible on her head cheered as well. It had been a while, but she was back in the Safari Zone for another Pokemon. And this time, she wasn’t alone; having recently met up with an old friend of hers, the blue-haired young woman had decided to tag along when he mentioned checking out the Safari Zone. Besides, they had some catching up to do. It also gave her another chance to train the Land Shark Pokemon and give it some much-needed experience.
Ramona looked over at her companion: Zernebog Romanov was an imposing, silver-haired giant of a man with intense golden eyes shadowed by his headband. With his hard, stern features and glaring eyes, he practically radiated that anti-hero vibe. His height easily put him a head above the girl, but she knew he was just a big softie at heart.
“You ready to catch some rare Pokemon, Zee? I am SO ready! Right, Groove?” The Gible cheered in agreement, hopping down from its perch upon the girl’s shoulder and starting to bury itself in the Ground.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
The Safari Zone. A place filled with all kinds of rare pokemon. A treasure trove for any self-respecting scientist with even the smallest leanings towards pokemon. Next to the Pokemon League of the respective regions, it was considered as the Mecca for trainers. Heck, it was the Mecca for breeders with the sheer amount of variety in it.
That was why it was no surprise to see Zernebog here. He always made it a point to travel to the Safari Zone because of the various things that he might find in there, like his Bagon or the many various fossil pokemon.
However, he wasn’t alone. Accompanying him were his pokemon –a Togepi named Apollo- as well as an old friend of his from another region and her pokemon, a female Gible. Given their personalities, this had the potential to get very interesting very quickly. Who knows what sort of trouble the two of them can get into while they were here?
Frankly, he was counting on it. It was getting a bit too boring lately aside from that one encounter with Ricki, his ex-boss.
”Of course I am.” Zernebog nearly scoffed and rolled his eyes, but reined in the impulse. ”The question is, is this place ready for our combined presence?”

“So, Zee,” the bluenette started as they walked through the Safari Zone, the girl careful to avoid the trail in the ground left by her Gible’s fin, “so what have you been up to? I haven’t seen you in a while. Like what you’ve done with your hair, by the way. It’s weird to not see you with that Mohawk of yours, you know. I almost didn’t recognize you without it.” And it was true; without the man’s signature hairdo, the young woman couldn’t recognize him until she saw him face to face.
“Hey…” Ramona nudged her companion, looking around. “You get the feeling that we’re being watched?” And, almost on cue, a blast of water sprayed the ground just in front of the two, nailing the bluenette’s land shark. It squawked loudly, flailing on the floor. “What the hey?!” Ramona exclaimed, crimson eyes darting up to find the source of the attack. She was met with the sight of a small white puff below an orange sphere surrounded by smaller orange spheres.
Her experience with the Hoenn region allowed her to identify it as a Castform in the sun. “Look at that Castform!” she exclaimed. “You wanna catch it? If not, I’m gonna try getting some good old-fashioned training in for Groove here.”

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
Well that didn’t take her long.
Zernebog couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at his blue-haired companion. While he had already known that she would ask about the rather drastic changes he had made a while after returning from that region, he didn’t count on her vouching the topic so soon.
”Thanks.” He chuckled once she finally finished. ”I felt like changing it, that’s all.”
What he didn’t mention was that his main reason for removing his signature Mohawk by dyeing all of his hair white was to separate himself from the monster that he had become while he was there. As a bonus, it also served to hide him from other Arcane agents that may still be looking for him for some reason. He kept those reasons to himself; she didn’t need to know that.
Before he was able to say anything else though, Ramona asked him another question. A question that was immediately followed up by a blast of water, making him instinctively step to the side to dodge it. Scowling, Zernebog narrowed his eyes and turned towards the source of the attack- some white puff with orange spheres. It was familiar, but the name didn’t come to him until Ramona said it out loud.
A Castform, huh? Well he could see the appeal of working with a weather manipulator for his team, but he wasn’t looking for one right now. It didn’t seem like it would fit either of his rosters anyway.
”Go ahead and do what you want.” Zernebog shrugged. ”I don’t have any use for it.”

Ramona smirked in a fashion very much reminiscent of a predator stalking its prey. “Alright, thanks!” she said enthusiastically, cracking her knuckles in anticipation. “Look alive, Groove, you’ve got a battle ahead of you!” she exclaimed. The Gible responded quickly, rubbing its face in the dirt before glaring at its assailant. “Sandstorm, then Dragon Rage!”
With a simple roar the sand kicked up around the Castform and Gible, shielding the two from view. The young woman covered her eyes, looking away from the twister that surrounded the two combatants and keeping them from sight. And then, suddenly, the sand exploded outwards following a loud roar. A grin threatened to split across the girl’s face as she faced forwards once again, crimson eyes taking in the sight: laying inert on the ground was the Castform, and kneeled on the ground, huffing was her Gible.
“Way to go, Groove!” Ramona cheered, picking the Land Shark up and tossing it into the air with a smile on her face. “I swear, you’re getting stronger every day! Zee, high five!” she held her hand out for her friend to meet.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
“Exegg!”
Upon seeing something bright getting closer out of the corner of his eye, Zernebog instinctively quickened his pace. A few moments later, a powerful explosion rocked the path he was walking on, nearly making him stumble. He managed to catch himself in time, though he had to catch his Togepi before he fell to the ground in the process due to his sudden abrupt motion.
What the hell?! Zernebog narrowed his eyes and turned around to properly assess his attacker.
When he did spot his attacker, his eyes actually widened. He and his friend were attacked by a bunch of telepathically-linked pink eggs. How’d he know they were mentally-linked? Because he knew that these eggs were actually Exeggcute. They were a bunch of treacherous grass and psychic types that usually inhabited Kanto. They also made good practice targets for Hyperion whenever he encountered them. Maybe they would serve as great targets to Apollo as well?
”Ramona, you want this Exeggcute?” Zernebog glanced at her while Apollo pulled himself to the side and looked at her with big, curious eyes. ”Because if you don’t… well, I have a few things to try out for the escaped grocery item rejects. I believe that it’s time for Apollo to flex his muscles a bit.”
Metaphorically of course. Togepi tend to have terrible physical moves, so he didn’t bother. Besides, he had a lot of better physical attackers on his team anyway.

Ramona looked at her friend questioningly as he began picking up his pace, not understanding exactly why it he was doing so.
That is, until the ground near them exploded outwards, causing the two of them to stumble backwards. Groove, who had been perched upon her shoulder, lost her footing, resorting to clinging onto the bluenette’s shirt with its small claws, hanging on for dear life.
‘What the hell?!’
Red eyes looked around, searching for the source of the attack, eventually finding her target to be what could only be described as a sextet of eggs in various states of being. It looked familiar, but the young woman couldn’t quite place where she had seen the Pokemon before.
Oh, it was an Exeggute! That’s right, she’d seen them in Kanto! Ramona simply shrugged in response to her friend’s question. “Hey, I took the last one; it’s only fair that I let you and Apollo handle this one,” she said, looking down at Zernebog’s Togepi. Her own Togepi had only recently evolved into a Togetic, so she was eager to see the evolution happen to her friend’s Pokemon.
“But I get the next one.”

”Fair enough.” Golden eyes gazed at the set of living pink eggs with a dangerous, almost hungry gleam that made them flinch in unison. ”It’s time to get a little target practice in, Apollo.”
”Toge toge~” Apollo crooned and glowed white as he jumped off of his trainer’s shoulder. The Exeggcute started to glow as well at the sight, but it couldn’t even charge a tenth of the power needed before it was blasted away by a white sphere of energy.
”Follow it up, Apollo.” Zernebog remarked as the Togepi landed on the ground and wobbled a bit. He would have to work with him on that later. ”No mercy.”
”Pi~!” Apollo arms started to glow as he waved it in the air like he was in a rock concert while the eggs were trying to get back in formation so that they could blast out another attack.
Just as they got back in formation though, they were struck by a sinister rainbow-colored beam. “EXEGGCUTE!!!” All of them screamed out in unison because of their extreme, shared pain before rolling to the side, falling unconscious.
Upon seeing what his random summoned move did to the eggs, the Togepi smirked and crossed his arms. ”Togepi.”
”Signal Beam, eh?” Zernebog chuckled as he picked up Apollo and placed him on his shoulder. ”How fortunate. Good job, buddy.”
He then shrugged and moved on, not sparing a glance at his attackers. ”Now let’s go. There’s more to see and so little time to do it.”

“Hey, Zee…” Ramona started, looking up at her companion, “have you seen where Groove’s gone? I haven’t seen her in a while, and it’s kind of worrying me.” As soon as she said that, the aforementioned Land Shark popped up from beneath the ground, a mysterious object grasped within its jaws.
“Whatcha got there?” the bluenette asked, bending down to pluck the object from the Gible, who panted in a dog-like manner, barking in eagerness to show what it had found to its trainer. “…What is this?” she wondered, holding the object up for her friend to see –a small, strange-looking stone with odd markings on it that she couldn’t help but feel like she’d seen before. “Hey, have you seen anything like this before?”
She found her attention jerked back to the stone in her hand as it glowed a malevolent indigo, and floated out of her grip, much to her amazement. Ramona backed up and watched, dumbfounded, as an ominous gust of wind blow around the four of them. The young woman looked on as the odd stone became surrounded by a horrid energy which coalesced into a vortex-like projection with a screech. Fiery eyes widened as she took in the thing in front of her.
“…Awesome!” she exclaimed as she looked at the newly formed Pokemon that appeared to be attached to the stone, her visage showing no signs of fear or trepidation –only anticipation was present. “I call dibs on that one, Zee!” she said, snatching her Safari Ball and holding it out.
“Groove, hit it with a Dragon Rage!” The Gible obliged, instantly firing off a wave of pure force at the Pokemon, who was knocked back, having been taken by surprise. However, Ramona didn’t let up from there, hurling a second Pokeball near the Spiritomb with an exclamation of “Flame on, Beat!” On cue, Beat the Charmander popped out of the ball and let loose a torrent of fire at the off-guard Pokemon, engulfing the Pokemon in flames. The projection disappeared, and the stone dropped back to the ground.

Golden light, tunnel white. If I run to you, would you stay? I might be a prototype, but we’re both real inside.
After a while of uneventful walking, Zernebog wasn’t surprised to hear Ramona pipe up again. The girl didn’t really like silence. However, he didn’t have the time to reply to Ramona’s question before the aforementioned pokemon popped out of the ground with something in its jaws.
Zernebog watched in amusement as the Gible pretty much acted like a Growlithe, looking all proud as his companion plucked the object from the land guppy’s mouth and held it up. However, when he got a good look at exact what his companion was holding, his eyes became very wide. He knew exactly what that was, having encountered it twice before.
”Ramona… your Gible just found an Odd Keystone!” He exclaimed, torn between alarm and envy. ”Maybe you should-”
Before he was able to warn her about it though, the stone started to glow violet and float in the air, complete with an ominous burst of wind that one would only usually see in horror movies. His hands instinctively went to his belt, ready to unleash one of his pokemon on it to subdue the evil group of spirits if necessary. He wasn’t sure if Ramona had anything on her to deal with a threat like this, especially with her penchant for Fighting types. Really, what was it about them that had hive mind pokemon attacking them today anyway?
To Zernebog’s surprise though, Ramona wasn’t afraid of the display at all. In fact, she was psyched. Her expression alone made him remove his hand from his belt, and her words made him concede the battle to her, but only after sighing wearily and nodding. He wasn’t sure what a heroic-type like her would do with something like that, but if it’s what she wanted, then who was he to stop her?
That was why he contented himself to simply watching the battle until it was finished, uncharacteristically keeping his comments to himself. He could comment on her fighting style later, after they finished this little skirmish and moved on to better pastures.
Unfortunately, just as soon as her pokeball settled down after rocking, they were suddenly assaulted with a high-pitched, shrieking sort of noise worse than nails on a chalkboard.
What in Arceus’ name is that?!?! Zernebog flinched, covering his ears in pain.
The Togepi on his shoulder had it even worse, because he actually fell off and started rolling around in pain and doing his best to hold his poor ears. A second later, a bright silver blur slammed into the Togepi, driving the little guy into the ground with a powerful thud that caused dust to scatter everywhere. It also had the side-effect of knocking Zernebog away while he was holding his ears, sending him flying into a tree.
Zernebog gritted his teeth as he hit the tree, refusing to give his assailant the satisfaction of crying out in pain. His body slid down on the ground with his jacket catching snags and tearing in multiple places on the way. He took a moment to compose himself before looking up. A huge silver bird with gray accents and blade-wings was standing triumphantly over a familiar round, white figure.
However, Zernebog wasn’t concerned about himself. ”Apollo! Are you okay?”
The Togepi’s arm twitched in response to his question, but he was unable to even voice out a reply before that same arm fell limp. The huge metal bird looked up, a vicious grin on its beak. “Skarmony!”
”So you wanna play hard ball, huh?” Zernebog returned the smirk, though his eyes conveyed something else entirely- anger. In response, the Skarmony cockily preened and cackled at him, daring at him to take his prey away from him.
”Then let’s play hard ball!” In one smooth motion, Zernebog took a pokeball from his belt, expanded it, and threw it forward. He didn’t bother to watch the pokeball release its contents in a white burst of light and simply pushed himself up.
Just as Zernebog got up, he was greeted by a powerful roar. ”ZAAAARD!”
A smirk worked its way to Zernebog’s face even as his golden eyes looked towards the admittedly awe-inspiring figure of his black dragon roaring to the skies. ”Burn that robot turkey to a crisp, Rion.”
Despite the bloodcurdling smirk that the odd-colored Charizard began to sport, it didn’t deter the Skarmony from starting that awful sound again and charging at the fire pokemon with glowing wings. However, the Charizard simply stared the Skarmony down and waited.
At the last possible moment, Hyperion suddenly took into the air and unleashed a stream of bluish-white fire right at the Skarmony, who was unable to dodge. The painful ringing immediately ceased, only to be replaced by the Skarmony’s agonized shrieks. The black Charizard kept it up for a minute before shutting his mouth and cutting the flame off, leaving the bird bathed in extremely hot flames for a few more seconds before it died down, leaving it glowing a bright red.
Surprisingly, the Skarmony managed to fly into the skies again even though it was damaged horribly and was now impeded by severe burns. Unfortunately for it, it was only able to maintain flight for a few seconds before crashing into the ground, beaten and shamed by only one move.
”Good job.” Zernebog grinned, the dangerous atmosphere around him disappearing. ”Of course, I didn’t expect it to put up even a decent fight.” That earned a dismissive snort and nod from Hyperion.
However, he had to admit that the Skarmony had a lot of guts and some serious balls to continue on even after knowing that it was outmatched. Why, it even had the initiative to combine moves! He’s never seen that in a wild one before. This one was special! A certain kind of special that only he can work with. Besides, they were almost out of time in here anyway and this one was the most promising creature he’d seen in this expedition (even the Spiritomb since that one didn’t put up much of a fight).
With those thoughts in mind, Zernebog took out his Safari ball and smirked. ”Hyperion, can you pick up Apollo for me? He’s in the crater near the charcoal turkey. I’ve got business to take care of.”
He didn’t even have to glance at the Charizard to know that he was doing as he was told. Instead, he tossed the Safari ball at the downed Skarmony. ”To the victor goes the spoils!”
