PERSONALITY
Sylvester is something of an eccentric. It's rather hard to believe that he's been married for eleven years and has a ten-year old daughter. Although, all things considered, perhaps it isn't as hard to believe that as one might think: Sylvester displays all the hallmarks of a man who is happy with life, and lives by the simple philosophy of taking each time as it comes and squeezing the maximum amount of enjoyment possible out of it.
Unfailingly optimistic – even when it's wholly inappropriate – and armed with a ready smile and an infectious laugh, Sylvester oozes contentment to the point that some people might just take offence from how disgustingly happy he is. He has a wicked, thoroughly aggravating sense of humour that people will either take to immediately or absolutely despise, for it revolves around unloading one terrible (but always appropriately situational) pun after another, and occasionally making obscure references to assorted media that few people have heard of, and even fewer have enjoyed. Life is Sylvester's private joke, and he takes a great delight in having a laugh over it...after all, if you can't laugh at yourself, then who can you laugh at?
Sylvester is a great believer in truth, justice and triumphing over adversity through determination and perseverance. Some might say that his blindingly white moral code and determination to do what is right stem from trying to be as good a role model for his daughter – and perhaps the more cynical members of Interpol who have been worn down by the job – as possible. But, considering the huge stack of old superhero comics sitting at the bottom of his wardrobe, others might say that he's simple acting out his boyhood fantasies through his work with Interpol. A lot of what Sylvester says as a part of his work – motivational speeches are a passion of his, as are dramatic turns of phrase – is cheesy and was cringe-worthy even when he was a child, but is spoken with such sincerity that it's both impossible to take him seriously and doubt his belief in what he is saying.
He does, of course, have a more serious side, although prefers to disguise this through his trademark humour. Sylvester has gotten along just fine in life by playing the buffoon and having people underestimate him thinking that is all there is to him – his teachers were always surprised by his test scores – and, when life does its utmost to make itself as difficult as possible, taking a negative attitude will only make it harder. This is the crux of Sylvester's entire attitude towards life: it's hard enough. People take things too seriously, and create all sorts of problems that they really don't need and wouldn't even have if they looked on the bright side every once in a while. If they learned how to laugh, and maybe have fun. Life doesn't end when you grow up; it begins. Sylvester is exactly what he wanted to be as a kid: a bigger kid who stays up late, buys whatever he wants and can do whatever he likes without his parents telling him what to do...that's what his wife is for.
Sylvester is not the sharpest tool in the shed (his wife won't let him near sharp objects, and for good reason) but he is far from stupid, and has a take-charge attitude that compensates for the fact that his instincts aren't as good as he likes to think they are...most of the time. He is geared more towards facts and figures than abstract ideas (which might seem strange for someone so interested in being a superhero, but he never could write stories as a kid; being an Accoutant suits him down to the ground) and tends to have difficulty thinking outside of the box. Whilst he does not appear to be, Sylvester is aware of his own shortcomings: his attempts to overcome them, or outright ignore them, are just another part of his unfailing optimism...although he could stand to ask for help every now and then, or delegate a little responsibility. Whilst he often appears to be without a care in the world, Sylvester carries some very heavy responsibilities on his shoulders: as a father, the sole provider of a family of three, and an Interpol agent of modest rank, he strives to do his best in each, and finds it difficult to admit that, sometimes, he can't manage everything in his life.
Sylvester is not immune to anger or frustration: he is, after all, only human, and if pushed enough he will lose his temper. He generally dislikes people who cause harm to others or themselves, and feels compelled to intervene in matters even if they aren't his concern – he is the worst kind of meddler and busybody at times. But he is quick to forgive, and his short-term memory for arguments is abysmal; he isn't the type of man who holds grudges. He has an extremely high degree of patience with others (he has a ten-year old daughter and several very dense clients; patience is a requirement for both jobs) and, despite the fact that he rarely shuts up, can provide an excellent listening ear...although he will usually ruin the moment with a joke.
It's not difficult to dislike Sylvester – especially once the puns start rolling out and continue long after they've stopped being funny - but it is very difficult to hate him. For all his flaws (and there are many) he is a sincere, honest soul who really does want the best for everyone he meets...and his own theme music. What he wouldn't give for his own theme song.
Ambitions:
Sylvester has always wanted to star in his own superhero show. One day, he hopes that the awe-inspiring name of Dragon Muffin will become a role model for children everywhere...and an action figure, a series of trading cards, an actual food (why isn't it a food already?!) and a best-selling album. Because why stop at one media outlet when you can conquer them all? He's an accountant, and he knows how the numbers work.
