Eevee.
Zernebog couldn’t help but turn towards Diomedes with an incredulous look on his face. ”Seriously? All this fuss for one of those fuzzballs that people are so inexplicably fond of?”
Diomedes ducked his head sheepishly in response, scratching the back of it with a paw. He didn’t need to vocalize what he was thinking for Zernebog to know how sorry he was for yet another false alarm. He hadn’t quite fined-tuned his senses yet like his big brother Theus, so he was prone to making mistakes even though technically speaking his should be better than the Kirlia’s by now.
”It’s fine, Dio.” Zernebog chuckled after rubbing Diomedes’ head, causing the Lucario to look at him with an irritated pout. ”’least you sensed it.”
Zernebog then returned to watching the girl and her dog as he followed along behind her. He was about to comment on how sweet the gesture was –if not a little stiff- when Diomedes suddenly poked his arm.
”Hm?” Zernebog was surprised to see him holding up a paw with his best impression of holding one finger up, as if to say there’s one more in the works. An amused grin worked its way onto Zernebog’s face, but he said nothing. Maybe this time what he was sensing would actually be threatening.
One could only hope, because he had a few strategies with Diomedes that he needed to test out.

SONG: NOTES: WHY CAN'T YOU CATCH IT, VESTA?! |||||PKMN6
The traveler seemed very… emotional. Disbelief was clearly evident in the man’s voice as she assumed he talked to the air or his Pokémon. He was overreacting quite a bit for a mere Eevee; Oscar took care of him in ten seconds, and that Pokémon the traveler had would have probably done the same in the same amount of time if Oscar didn’t do it first. Perhaps he was looking for a particular Pokémon… but even if that was true, that wasn’t any reason to lose his composure.
Vesta’s peripheral caught subtle movement, and in sync with Oscar, who turned and crouched in a battle position, the soldier whirled to the source of the movement, putting a hand on her knife as her hair billowed around her body in a way that made the large military blade visible on her lower back. It was an instinctual reaction, a reflex she developed from all of those survival exercises. Saved her life on occasion, and what was the creature that greeted her?
A tiny little gray… ball thing, floating in the air.
Vesta’s eyebrow raised as the Pokémon did a twirl before hovering to her. It smiled wide and exclaimed, “Castform, Cast~!” as it moved to fly around the redhead’s head excitedly. It giggled and smiled as it went around her like a roller coaster. Vesta tolerated this for a moment, merely out of curiosity; no Pokémon had ever done this before. Her initial reaction was really just looking at the traveler with a look combining disbelief and confusion. After a few seconds, though, she simply waved the thing away; she could tolerate only so much annoyance at once, and it was acting completely undignified.
“That is enough of that,” she said, as she walked away from the Castform, simultaneously brushing her hair to her back again. “Come, Oscar.”
With that order, Oscar was at her heels again as she put her hands behind her back and walked away, leaving the Castform to look at the traveler and frown.

This time, Zernebog could honestly see why Diomedes warned him of this one. He had asked his pokemon to warn him if they ever encountered another Castform because it was starting to get a little weird when he kept encountering those gray blobs almost every time he came in here. It was like he was a Castform magnet or something, but that couldn’t be the case, right?
Right.
Besides, the redhead’s face as she looked to him while the gray blob was doing its best rollercoaster impression made encountering yet another one of these creatures so worth it. Zernebog wasn’t the best people person in the world, but even he could tell from the few snippets that he’d heard and what he’d seen so far that the woman was sort of the stoic type. And frankly, seeing one of those with that kind of reaction always made his day.
Though Zernebog kept neutral at what happened next, Diomedes couldn’t help but let out a wince as the gray blob was just easily dismissed. Now that was a certified crash and burn for a pokemon that actually wanted to be caught. Both he and his trainer couldn’t help but pity the dejected look on the Castform’s face as it watched the woman walk away in a huff, frustrated from the adorable display.
Well, Zernebog couldn’t help but try to cheer it up. After all, he was supposed to be trying to reform into a nicer guy. That and certain people –his mother and grandmother- wouldn’t forgive him if he didn’t at least try to cheer it up since it did nothing to offend him personally.
”Don’t worry little guy-” The Castform coughed and shook her head, prompting Zernebog to chuckle. ”Oh, sorry. Little lady. Seems she didn’t appreciate the cute act. You’re gonna have to try something else to impress her. Maybe next time.”
Zernebog then watched as the Castform nodded at him dejectedly, flashing him a sad smile before floating away. Wow, she really took it hard. Well, at least he tried. He shook his head and quickly jogged to catch up with the redhead and her dog, with Diomedes following at an equal pace.
Once he caught up, he couldn’t help but ask her something. ”Hey, I was just wondering why you didn’t want the Castform to go with ya. She seemed like she definitely wanted to come with you.” After all, didn’t most women eat up the cute act?

“Castform, hmm? Is that what it is called?”
There was a hint of genuine surprise in Vesta’s voice; she didn’t know what the Pokémon was… truthfully, she didn’t know a lot Pokémon species. She could add a new one to her memory, though, apparently. She took a few seconds of silence, getting a somewhat pensive look as she committed the new Pokémon’s name and appearance to her memory; whatever the gray thing was, there was always the chance she could run into it again, whether in the wild or against a trainer, it would be wise to know as much as she could about it, but, unless the man wanted to tell her about it, she would save research for later. She needed to focus on getting a new Pokémon.
Looking back to the traveler, her tone was simple, callous to how cold it really was, as she said, “It looked weak, sir. I am here to find a strong Pokémon, or one that can be trained to be strong. I don’t need a gray floating blob that wastes time with antics.” She looked forward again as she finished, “I am here on business, sir, I don’t have any tolerance for stupidity.”
Oscar looked up at her and nodded curtly in agreement. He wanted a strong partner just as much as her. Their service to Steinhart went before all else, and silliness like that Castform’s would be counter-productive at best.

Zernebog wasn’t surprised that she didn’t know what the name of the gray blob was. Not many non-Hoenn natives knew it even existed because of how rare it was outside of their native region, and even in their native region it was still very rare. It was probably because there was some truth in those rumors about Castform being an artificial pokemon or something along those lines.
Still, there was something that struck a chord in him when she bluntly called the little lady weak. Against his will, his mind flashed back to Perses back when he had been a Magikarp, before shifting to Apollo, then a vision of a young version of himself with his hair dyed black, until finally settling on the Castform’s dejected face before she floated away to places unknown. He huffed a bit to remove those thoughts from his head, but made sure to disguise it as a chuckle.
”Just because it looks weak and acts silly doesn’t mean that it’s automatically worthless. Sometimes the most useful things come in the most unexpected of packages.” Zernebog pointed out with a wry smirk. ”I’m not sure if you’d want something as versatile as a master weather manipulator though. After all, you seem to like the direct approach more.” He continued, eyeing the Mightyena in the process.
He then shrugged. ”But then again, what do I know of your business?
Diomedes just watched his trainer with half-lidded eyes. He knew what he was trying to do and was very amused by it. It had been a while since he’d helped someone without even thinking of wanting anything in return, and it was nice to see that even if he would never admit it. Pops –because he considered him more of a father than his actual one, Rep- liked to keep up that tough guy act even though most of his pokemon can see through that just fine. Well, whatever floated his boat.

SONG: NOTES: Fuck you, Castform. Y u such a qt? |||||PKMN6
Vesta kept her eyes forward as she walked, though her ears still paid attention to the traveler.
“Just because it looks weak and acts silly doesn’t mean that it’s automatically worthless. Sometimes the most useful things come in the most unexpected of packages.”
As soon as he started, the redhead got flashbacks to the woman Richelle Jace. With those memories came hints of annoyance and anger; that woman, for whatever reason, made it her business to butt into how Vesta did things, from her training methods to her very way of life. Just the very thought of that green-haired bitch made Vesta grit her teeth.
”I’m not sure if you’d want something as versatile as a master weather manipulator though. After all, you seem to like the direct approach more. But then again, what do I know of your business?”
That snapped Vesta out of her growing anger. Versatility? Master weather manipulation? Her eyes widened briefly at the prospect, then immediately narrowed as she thought about it. Granted, the tiny little blob wasn’t intimidating, but if its versatility could outweigh that…. Weather effects were deceptively useful and could support an entire team, and that wasn’t even touching on potential uses outside of battle.
Could Steinhart profit from use of this Pokémon ‘Castform’? It was tiny, unbecoming, and annoying, but could its usefulness outweigh all of that? Last she recalled, there were four weather effects that directly affected Pokémon and was readily available: Sunny Day, which increased Fire-type moves and decreased Water-type moves. A move that would serve Howi very well, and one that she planned on getting him at some point anyway. Then there was Rain Dance, which had the opposite effect. Hail benefited Ice-types most, damaging all Pokémon that weren’t of that type, and Sandstorm was similar, but Steel, Rock, and Ground-type Pokémon were immune to it instead.
…Damn, Castform was starting to look like a good support unit, especially with the myriad of moves that benefited from weather effects. Vesta sighed and rubbed her head. She missed out on an opportunity to benefit Steinhart. That was grounds for punishment in her eyes. What would happen? A cut in pay? Forced training? Reduced rations? Another sigh through her nose, and she looked back at the traveler. The Castform wasn’t the only thing on her mind; she was getting the feeling that she was in the company of Miss Jace again, almost, and curiosity was starting to get at her.
She stopped and swiveled on her left heel, doing a perfect about face to face the man. Oscar quickly noticed this and stopped as well, standing at his fullest height, giving his focus to Vesta, the traveler, and his Pokémon, though he still kept his senses about him. While his master focused on the man, the Mightyena was noting something odd. The clouds in the sky were suddenly dissipating, and the sun was shining brighter than normal.
Vesta seemed none the wiser, as her attention was conversing with the traveler. “Sir, I am curious. Are you familiar with a woman known as Richelle Jace?”

Bullseye!
Zernebog wasn’t entirely sure what was going on inside that redhead’s mind, but from taking a glance at Diomedes’ apparently amused face, it appeared that his words hit where they were supposed to go. His smirk just became a little bit wider in satisfaction.
Right before the girl turned, Zernebog suddenly felt the entire place get warmer. Since he wasn’t embarrassed or anything, he raised his head for a moment and flickered his eyes towards the clearing skies. His smirk became even wider. This couldn’t just be coincidence; he’d been proved wrong far too many times to even try to assume that. But he’d let the woman figure the reason for herself.
After all, where was the fun in telling everyone everything they needed to know? They won’t learn anything that way.
His head returned to its normal position just in time to see the redhead turn around with perfect precision (in fact if he wasn’t mistaken, that was a military about-face, of all things?) to face him and ask him a question. The topic she broached made his eyebrows rise underneath his bandana though.
Ricki? Why would she ask about her of all things? Was she some sort of former Arcane member as well? Or maybe a Pinion member tasked to hunt them down? Well, if she were then he’d have no choice but to put her out of the picture until he knew what her intentions were, because he couldn’t afford a security risk. And if those intentions turned out to be detrimental to his own goals, well… they were isolated enough from civilization to do what he had to do.
He’d hoped that it wouldn’t come to that though. He’d promised himself not to do that again, after all. But he’d do it again in a heartbeat if it meant keeping himself and his friends safe from their shared past.
”…yes. I do.” He answered after a moment, keeping up the façade of being unaffected this time. ”Why’d you ask? She offend you or something?”

So, her hunch was correct. She was getting flashbacks for a reason; he was a friend, or at least an associate to her. Annoyance was visible in the golden eyes of the woman as she recollected how that meeting meant. Still, this was tempered by the more recent memories of the traveler. Unlike her, he talked with some sense, and minded his own business. He, unlike her, was actually something of a pleasure to be around. Just because he knew her didn’t mean that he was as bad as her.
Vesta calmed herself, letting out a soft sigh through her nose, though her glare eased only slightly. “Yes, sir, you could say that. She made it a point to butt her head into my business where she wasn’t welcome. She also made it a point to stay in my business, despite being told to cram it.”
The soldier’s glare gave way to confusion; eyebrow rising as she suddenly noticed how it was oddly warm.... The weatherman didn’t predict any sort of heat wave. “What…?” Vesta looked up, but her eyes immediately whirled behind her as Oscar barked a warning. Her eyes locked onto a tiny little orange blob with a white base hovering in the air above them. It had a determined look on its face, as if it had something to prove.
Was it the Castform?! Was it a Pokémon that changed forms?
She never got a chance to think hard about it. The Castform took in a deep breath and unleashed a stream of fire at her. When the front of the stream formed into an X, Vesta immediately identified the attack as Fire Blast, and immediately she went into battle mode.
Her fists tightened as issued her first command, “Oscar, dodge!” The attack was powerful, but the predictable hit area allowed both Vesta and Oscar to dodge the attack, though doing so allowed the field to catch fire in a large X, separating Vesta from the traveler. She kept her eyes locked on the Castform as it lowered down to an altitude that was actually plausible for battle. On the side of her mind, Vesta was thankful for her luck; the Castform apparently came back for whatever reason, said reason not really mattering right now.
Sunny Day… all Fire-type attacks would be increased in this setting. More than that, she didn’t know what the capabilities of Castform were, aside from the fact that it was apparently an excellent weather controller. Best to be practical and ensure a quick fight.
“Howi, front and center!”
Upon the command, Vesta’s Magmar released himself from his own Poké Ball and solidified in front of her. He had no need to look around him; he could immediately feel the fire, and he already heard plenty of the situation from inside his Poké Ball. Locking eyes with the Castform, he could the command ‘fire’ from his leader, and as such, he quickly fired a concentrated burst of flames towards the Castform.
The Castform was smarter than the average bear; it managed to dodge both the Flame Burst and the pincer attack that Oscar was trying to perform with Crunch. The Castform chuckled as it dodged both attacks and actually took the time to blow a raspberry at Oscar when he chomped down on nothing but air. Unfortunately, it opened itself up to a secondary strike; a perfect Sand Attack in its eyes.
While it squeaked in surprise and suddenly devoted its attention to attempting to shake the sand out of its shut eyes, Vesta yelled orders again, “Howi, trap it!” Her Magmar didn’t even make a sound or motion of confirmation; he acted, blowing a ring of fire at the Castform, the ring easily landing around the Castform, bursting into a hollow ring of burning.
“Oscar, strike now!”
The Mightyena dove through the wall of fire, heedless towards the risk, breaking through the flames, taking advantage of the Castform’s confusion to give it a good, solid Crunch attack, holding it in his jaws, shaking it around before slamming it down hard on the ground, and as soon as it hit the dirt, the Fire Spin dissipated, leaving Oscar and the Castform visible to Howi and Vesta, the latter approaching the new Pokémon.
Staring at the unconscious Pokémon for a few moments, Vesta simply tossed the Safari Ball down at it, sucking the Pokémon in.

Annoyance. If there was any one emotion that Zernebog can recognize from anyone no matter how far they were or how much they tried to hide it, it was that particular one. He’s pulled that out on almost everyone he’d met on more than one occasion, so it was one of the few social cues that he’d trained himself to spot.
Well, at least with that answer he knew that she wasn’t from Arcane or Pinion. People from those two organizations would never express open irritation over their target, since it might out their real intentions in the process. That is, of course, if she wasn’t lying. The annoyance seemed genuine though, so he was inclined to believe her.
”That definitely sounds like her alright.” Zernebog admitted with a chuckle.
He then blinked when the Mightyena barked at the same time Diomedes pointed upwards with a triumphant smirk that he didn’t even bother to disguise. Glancing upwards, his smirk became much wider when he saw an orange and white blob floating in the air. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that it was the Castform that floated away in dejection earlier. He wondered if she took his advice to heart or if she was going to try another cutesy thing.
WHOOOSH! Upon seeing the Fire Blast and instinctively stepping to the side, it was obvious to see that she did.
Unfortunately, that left him with an entirely different problem to deal with.
”Oh bloody hell!”
Zernebog could only curse as the Fire Blast landed on the grass and immediately started a roaring blaze. The orange tongues of flame started to devour everything in its path as it almost seemed to glow, empowered by the sun.
And then it turned from bad to worse when the redhead released her Magmar and started using fire attacks as well, like a lunatic. ”Well that’s just great. More fire. Why don’t we just burn the entire place down while we’re at it too?” Zernebog couldn’t help but deadpan.
Seeing that she wasn’t listening, Zernebog groaned. ”Fine, I’ll fix this myself. Perses, its damage control time!”
Zernebog took a pokeball out of his belt and threw it into the air. He watched as white light poured out of the pokeball and solidified into a massive blue serpentine figure that roared out in defiance. Perses didn’t need any orders to know that he had to control the flames if not extinguish them entirely, so he immediately surrounded his tail with water and started swinging at the enhanced flames, resisting the urge to grunt due to feeling his attack weaken from the intense sun.
“Chic!” Suddenly, a mirror appeared and released a massive tail-like stream of water headed Perses’ way, only to be smashed away a blue sphere of energy.
”Lu!” Diomedes glared down at the small orange chick who had assaulted them. Said chick glared at him back defiantly and spat out small flames at him.
In response, Diomedes put his paws together and then spread them apart, creating a long, thin bone out of blue energy. He then spun it around, easily dispelling the small flames with two hits before thrusting it forward and extending it, catching the small chick by surprise and hitting it in the stomach before launching it in the air with a vicious upward strike.
The bone of energy then fizzled out from Diomedes’ paws, but he paid it no mind as he followed the Torchic into the air and jumped up. The Torchic then tried to hire embers at him, only to be body-checked into the ground with a vicious Extremespeed hit, causing a lot of dust to rise and inadvertently help in smothering the flames, though said flames still roared strongly despite Perses’ valiant efforts. Said bird tried to get up and imitate the last move that the Lucario used, only to be sent into the realm of unconsciousness with a small blue energy blast to the face.
”Rio.” Diomedes scoffed before turning away and looking for other possible intruders.
While Diomedes’ attention was off somewhere else, the sweating white haired trainer approached the downed Torchic. He looked at the young chick with a calculating expression before smirking and nodding. He then took out his Safari Ball and tossed it at the downed pokemon, watching as it was absorbed into the pokeball with a red light while his Gyarados continued to do damage control in the background….

SONG: NOTES: |||||PKMN6
Taking the camouflage-decorated Safari Ball from the ground, Vesta sighed as she looked at the Castform inside. It was panting, exhausted, but it had a smile on its face as it looked up at Vesta with a prideful smile. So, the thing attacked her just to prove its worth… she had to admit, its determination was impressive. Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad addition after all, assuming, of course, it quit the cutesy acts that it introduced itself with.
With the Castform now caught, there was another problem to deal with. The soldier wiped her sweating brow as she turned to the raging fire the Castform started, and immediately options of how to combat it started rolling around her head. It wouldn’t serve for a forest fire to burn down half the Safari; it could very well get her banned, which would be a hindrance for Steinhart at best.
‘Still, Vesta thought, as she looked up at the Gyarados, knowing full well just what it was, I don’t have any Water-types, and the Castform is too weak to battle a fire like this…. Not like water would help much anyway, with Sunny Day still active. Looking back at Howi, she had a thought of starting a crossfire, but currently, Howi lacked a Fire-type move that would be consistent enough to be reliable. That left another option… but Vesta was uncertain of it. It was her down payment, after all, and using it could risk betraying her alliance to Steinhart.
The fire spreading towards her made her decision for her. Her eyes narrowed as she reached into her pocket and held up another Poké Ball, releasing a rocky rhino to slam into the ground and dig his forepaw into the ground. Looking to the traveler, she yelled over the action, “Hey! Your dog Pokémon should be careful!”
Turning back to the fire, Vesta pointed to it, commanding her Rhyhorn, “Put out the fire with Earthquake!” Kilo nodded, rearing up on two legs before slamming his forelegs onto the ground, sending out a massive shockwave. The entire area rumbled and shook for a few seconds before the very ground began to rip apart, random chunks of dirt and rock shooting up, bursts of dirt helping to put out the fire while flying rocks helped separate the fire from its fuel.

If there was one thing Zernebog hated, it was excessive heat. Now, that might sound strange coming from a guy whose main pokemon is a black Charizard, but it was true. His genes were simply not predisposed to heat tolerance; quite the opposite actually, considering his mother’s side of the family. His upbringing did nothing to help with that.
However, even those who didn’t hate the heat would still be trying to take out this fire. It was just common sense, really. They didn’t really want to burn like witches of old or raze down the entire area and get banned from the Safari Zone entirely. No fun in that.
“Hey! Your dog pokemon should be careful!” Gold eyes blinked owlishly and looked over to where the voice came from, only to see a Rhyhorn released from his pokeball. He immediately but two and two together and got a disconcerting four.
”Dio… JUMP!” Zernebog ordered at the same time as the Rhyhorn started rearing its legs up.
The ground shook at the same time as Diomedes started lifting off the ground. Zernebog was already used to the vibrations from Earthquake, enabling him to stand relatively still while the ground shook violently. Perses was unaffected due to his typing, so he just kept swinging his water-covered tail at the flames. The vibrations ended as soon as Diomedes landed on the ground, earning a relieved sigh from the Lucario.
”…This isn’t working out.” Zernebog muttered as he looked at Diomedes with a frown. ”Dio, time to return. I’ve got another plan.”
The Lucario simply nodded as his trainer took out his pokeball and put him back in there, knowing that he’d be more of a hindrance than a help with the fire raging.
Once he was back safely in his pokeball, Zernebog grinned and took out another one from his belt after putting back Diomedes’ pokeball. ”Time for a gamble! Come on out, Apollo!” He called out as he released the pokemon inside.
The white light solidified into a small, egg-bound creature. Unlike the other two, he didn’t have any sort of coolness or intimidation factor going for him, but that wasn’t the point of why Zernebog had him. “Toge~?” Beady eyes turned to look at Zernebog, waiting for his order patiently.
”Metronome.” Zernebog shrugged. A gamble was a gamble.
Apollo jumped and smiled. “Togepi~ Togepi~ Togepi~” He chanted as he started swinging his arms like a Metronome. Above his head, a blue orb suddenly emerged and shot out into the sky, making said skies suddenly obscure and darken with rain clouds. A rumble of thunder sounded, and then the rain began to fall, drenching everything in the area.
Hiss…. With renewed vigor, Perses roared in triumph and continued to suppress the flames, this time having much better luck with it as his Aqua Tail was strengthened.
”…Jackpot~!” Zernebog laughed, uncaring of the fact that he was getting soaked from the heavy downpour and would soon be drenched to the bone. Apollo was grinning at his feet, chuckling too.
”Now to take care of the rest of the flames! Apollo, go to the other large concentration of flames and try to snuff them out with Ancientpower, okay?” The Togepi nodded and shuffled over towards the fire. Once he was there, he started peppering the flames with rocks he created from his attack.
