APPEARANCE
His everyday attire is usually something along the lines of a button-up shirt and a simple pair of jeans. Murdoc likes to keep things simple, after all. When he's out and about, he dons a thicker flannel and a good pair of walking shoes, and a messenger bag. Those diagonal slings are comfy, after all.
Of course, he has some Team Rocket duds. A cap, a long-sleeved shirt typically seen on the grunts, and black pants and white gloves. Pretty standard stuff. For incognito stuff, he has a simple badge with the R on it. [/ul]
PERSONALITY
You typical everyday goofy father figure. Murdoc is a really laid back kind of guy. If you hear some chuckling going on, it is likely to be him. If there's a kid crying in the park, he'll be there with a ice cream in hand. If you're trying to make a move on your lady, he'll show up and sit in between the two of you with a bowl of popcorn, ignorant of it all. Yup, he's that guy.
Murdoc's pretty clever, too. He's been around the block a time or two and knows how it goes. He's tinkered with bits and pieces here and there in the hopes of getting stuff done. He's pretty empathic, and can read people's emotions better than their actions. He'd make a pretty solid PokeCenter worker or a counselor, if he put his mind to it. He doesn't like being pinned down in one area, though. He likes to be free and travel around with Pokemon by his side. Those guys are the best.
That said, when it is business time, he gets down to business. A member of Team Rocket doesn't just rush in with a wide smile. While he's still laid back to the core, he can put on a cool demeanor and do what needs to be done. It seems odd that such a guy could be in Team Rocket, but being nice doesn't quite pay the bills, and if someone is going to do the crime he'd rather do it himself.
Ambitions: He wants to travel the world with Pokemon. Oh, right, and rise through the ranks. Control of Team Rocket would be cool. [/ul]

HISTORY
The only really important stuff about this guy has happened in the last year or so. I mean, his life was pretty uneventful before then. He was born in Saffron City, adopted a Slowpoke when he was out of school, and began his journey around the world.
Murdoc kind of fell into a bad crowd in unorthodox ways. It all happened on a return trip to Kanto. A vacation to Hoenn was nice and all, but nothing could compare to his home. Being poor was pretty cool too. It was so cool, in fact, that it was too cool. To fix this insane amount of cool, he did some local favors and jobs - that's what most Pokemon owners did, after all. The world was a pretty friendly place like that.
Anyways, one of the jobs the poor Duck took on was deceivingly simple. "Come to my seaside cottage and babysit my Pokemon!" This seemed like a simple enough request, and with his lifelong partner Slowpoke by his side he figured it would be easy to keep them all in line. He showed up and things seemed normal enough - just a young man with some Ekans and a Growlithe that needed constant attention. This would all be easy enough. Just a few minutes into the job, however, and it quickly grow complicated. The door was kicked in and three goons in dark clothes apprehended Murdoc and the Pokemon in the room before anyone knew what was going on.
After being transported to somewhere between Lavender Town and Saffron City, he managed to break himself free and put up a bit of resistance. Meenah and Mephisto didn't last long, and Murdoc is not much of a physical fighter. The standoff was rather intensive, but the three grunts parted to allow their team specialist in. A smug grin preludes the conversation that took place. It was long and arduous, but Murdoc listened.
It seemed like he was left with little choice. Either he join Team Rocket for a few jobs as the eyes of the operation, or they keep his Pokemon and keep him silent forever. He begrudgingly did as told, but found an odd sense of solace. The jobs they were sent to due weren't as terrible as he thought; it was mostly just stealing material possessions. The members themselves were human too - he knew a few of them were just trying to make money for their families and such. He came to view it as a sort of... occupation, so to speak. He even got dental. That last part was a lie, but he figured he could do more good in the organization than dead.

Murdoc took in the way that Hyouko seemed to hear his words. Murdoc felt like he had a sickness, and through the numb haze he thought he saw Hyouko shake. While his eyes were unclouded, his brain seemed to be having trouble finding the answers to what he was seeing. That was Hyouko, and he was shaking. Just barely, and only with his hands. Those hands that made wonderful potions and stitched up equipment for players.
He had no response to what the merchant said. He could feel the breaking glass within the tones. The alchemist was in worse shape than he was - he was just now showing it. Murdoc's knuckle dragged slightly on the grass as he tried to find the effort to reach a hand out to the boy, but he lost all momentum at the sound of the wind. A small, tickling gust. It barely moved their hair, but it tickled his ears slightly, just like a whisper. There was a slight reaction from Hyouko at this, and Murdoc's eyebrows furrowed slightly. He was paying no mind to the boy's location relative to the border...
He was shaking more as Murdoc slowly clenched his right fist. Hyouko was in pain, and he could have prevented it. Could he have prevented it? Murdoc wasn't anywhere near his friend when it happened. In fact, Murdoc was protecting other raid members from a Kobold Sentinel. He saved three lives, but couldn't he have saved one more? He'd get his chance soon, though.
Before he could say anything comforting, Hyouko had changed directions completely. He was still, then mobile. Thankfully, he was away from the edge - the danger was only growing, though. Instability had a way of carrying around a few self-destructive weapons. Then he heard the first plea.
Of course it wasn't fair. It would never be fair. 100% of all deaths in Sword Art Online were unfair. However, he knew what was meant. This one was the most unfair. He agreed.
Then the waterfall was unleashed. The face wasn't Hyouko's - it was the face of emotion, a face of pure pain and betrayal by all of the fairness of life and nature. He was betrayed by promises to return alive, promises to stick together, promises to be back.
The next sounds he heard were painful, but demanded to be heard. He winced quite noticeably, in the same way an anesthetic patient would react to a blade hitting the numb skin. There was no defense for this onslaught. For all his armor and talk of protection, Murdoc was quite naked in front of these words. Hyouko may have revealed his own self-blame, but even Murdoc felt his guilt get a choke hold on him. Another result of his inability to save his friend - the pain was multiplying as it affected more and more people.
Then everything happened all at once. He saw bits and pieces of the moments - Hyouko's face when he took that step, the movements of his hair as gravity took its toll, and the minuscule sounds the ground beneath Murdoc made. Before he knew it, he was clutching Hyouko's arm tightly, right about the elbow joint. Murdoc was laid out flat on the ground - his heavy armor, unable to protect him earlier, was now weighing him down enough to anchor his position and prevent him from sliding right over the edge and into the relief they all desired.
Grunting, Murdoc's other hand gripped at the ground, trying to reaffirm his hold. He was straining heavily to maintain this hold and keep himself from falling. "Not today." His breathing revealed his strain as his adrenaline took a tighter grip, and with a rolling heave he pulled the merchant up and back onto the ledge. Remaining on his back, Murdoc stared into the sky. "We're not dying now. Not like this. If we die, Hyouko, we die protecting others, like he would.
A few more droplets fell from his eyes. Like a hero would.
