The dim light of a full moon was all that pierced the sheer darkness that had overtaken the forest once the sun had dipped under the horizon. All around, though many of the forest's inhabitants had gone to sleep, the sounds of nocturnal pokemon were just beginning to become apparent. In a way, the forest never truly slept, and life simply went on in shifts as daytime pokemon were replaced by those of the night.
Through the trees, the beaten path having been left behind, a stranger to the woods was weaving through the foliage, following the splash of white that was an Absol as he moved as swiftly and silently as a cat across the cold leaf strewn floor. Gwendolyn was a fair ways off from her ranch, but still it was required. She was still relatively new to breeding and so far had a very limited stock. That needed to be fixed.
Out here, she was searching for a particular pokemon. A Murkrow. Though the pokemon didn't necessarily fit into her specialty, it's evolution was capable of learning a specific egg move of Togetic's that she desired for it. After doing some research, it was either murkrow, or Plusle or Minun, and the crow was the one that more closely fit her taste.
Ahead, Azrael suddenly paused, hesitating as he had suddenly come upon a stone wall that was coated in moss. Gwen looked curiously, at it. "Strange place for a wall, hmm?" She mused as she moved along it. Eventually she came to a part of the wall that was broken down, and she was able to climb over the rubble fairly easily and enter the otherwise closed in courtyard of what looked to be a long abandoned ruin. "Maybe our bird has made a nest in here?" Gwen suggested. Azrael followed cautiously behind her, simply nodding his agreement to her suggestion.
Gwen continued onward into the temple, through the entrance into the structure. Once inside, she found numerous corridors leading in all directions while the floors were coated in dust, dirt and other things that obscured it from plain view. Gwen headed straight for a stair case, assuming that up would be the best place to go to search for any bird pokemon hiding within the structure.

Gwendolyn's footsteps echoed as she climbed the stone stair case upward, while her hands only grazed the rails for a brief moment before pulling away from the thick coat of dust that coated the surface. "Clearly very old. Must have been a long time since this place has seen vistors." Gwendolyn noted as she brushed the dust off of her finger tips as she reached the second floor.
Azrael followed close behind, his shoulders tense and his gaze constantly on alert for danger. "It smells bad in here." The Absol grunted as they reached even flooring once more. The upstairs looked little different from the entrance. There were some rickety old tables up here, none of them were standing and various bits of debris littered the moth eaten rug.
Suddenly, the sound of a shrill squeaking sound reached his ears, and the Absol stiffened. "Something... It must be trapped." The Absol mumbled under his breath, shaking off his surprise and heading into one of the rooms along the hallway, he glanced up to see a strange, mildly disturbing sight of a large blue stuck in a hole in the ceiling with two long thin limbs hanging out and a third pinned awkwardly against it's body.
Gwendolyn had looked to the Absol the moment he jumped, and part of her expected the still somewhat jumpy canine to be unnerved, but Azrael instead pushed on. She followed, her curiosity peaked by her pokemon's reaction, and soon discovered what was the matter. "I think that might be a Surskit." Gwendolyn said. It was no Murkrow, or any sort of bird for that matter. Gwen certainly would never have come anywhere near here if she was looking for one.
It was far from what she was looking for, but she was far from simply leaving the thing to it's fate when it appeared to have gotten itself stuck in a hole. A ball shot from her belt floating in the air as it was maximized, before releasing her Togetic. "Skyla, do please give that Surskit up there a hand getting out of that hole."
The Togetic looked up at the unfortunate Surskit and nodded, flying up to it, and giving it a good push out. The Surskit let out a loud shriek of surprise as it was suddenly dislodged, but without even looking back to see who had released it, the Surskit bolted across the roof and was very quickly out of sight. "Very good." Gwen praised the Togetic, before returning her to her poke ball.
Gwen then turned her attention over toward a nearby armoire. This entire place seemed to be some old abandoned mansion, and this room appeared to have once been someone's bedroom, though all that seemed to hint at a potential bed was a pile of busted wood pieces and some whithered shreds of fabric. Struck by some curiosity, Gwen reached over and pulled the door open to see what she might find.
Dig Dig Dig . . . What's this?! Congratulations, You've found Helix Fossil! It is the remains of the known Lord of Tentacles. Bring it to a Professor, watch it revert.

As Gwen opened the armoire door, one of it's hinges snapped. She grasped the door as it twisted awkwardly, only to be forced to allow it's weight to bust it's remaining hinge so it could be set down on the floor. Her attention remained fixed on the armoire's contents. There wasn't a whole lot. Some rusty looking clothes hangers hung from a rod across the top, while resting on top of the drawers at it's base was... Something interesting.
Gwen picked up the rock, and brushed a thick layer of dust off of it, before running her fingers over it's surface. An indentation in the form of a helix was imprinted into the rock. "Looks like we've found ourselves a fossil." Gwen noted. She was aware that a professor could help her restore it into a pokemon, but Gwen was at odds to consider if fossilized pokemon fell under her specialty or not. Being prehistoric, otherwise extinct pokemon did make them a curiosity, but otherwise weren't all that remarkable.
Deciding against taking it, she set the fossil down where she found it. She then headed back into the hallway with Azrael at her heels. Surely she'd find something of note here, even if they weren't destined to find the particular pokemon they were searching for.

Both Gwendolyn and Azrael continued along the dark, musty hallway. Nails were driven into the walls at odd lengths, possibly having once held paintings that had long ago been cleared out. Candelabras hung from the ceiling as well, though apart from a bit of wax residue, they were completely empty. As the hallway only got darker, Gwen reached into her shoulder bag and pulled out a flash light, turning it on and sending a beam of light down the hall.
The light brought to attention a mass of twigs and what looked like pillow stuffing that was wedged into one of the hanging Candelabras above. A startled chirp came from it, and a second later a Swablu swooped down, diving bombing Gwen, who threw up her arms in defense as it tried to aim a peck attack at her. "Azrael, hang back." Gwen told her Absol who, after barking aggressively at the cotton winged bird, reluctantly backed down.
Gwen reached for a pokeball, one holding a carbink she actually purchased from a new trainer some time ago. "Go Carbink! Sharpen, then Stone Edge Swablu!" Gwen commanded it. She had actually named it 'Binky', though she wasn't completely settled on the name quite yet. She knew she was taking chances using a pokemon she hadn't even had a chance to interact with, but she was sure the Carbink would know what to do. Otherwise, she did have other pokemon who could take care of it.
Carbink meanwhile, floated there momentarily, confused. Where was this? Last he recalled, some intruder in the tunnels had captured it, but looking around, it was definitely not the same human who had captured it. Unfortunately it didn't have much time to contemplate it's surroundings, as the human suddenly gave it an order, while the Swablu in question shot a dragon pulse attack at it.
Well, how rude! Not that it actually had done much of anything. The glowing green orb disintegrated uselessly upon contact and the Carbink just shot the bird an annoyed glare. Ignoring the human's command, Carbink simply used Stone Edge, summoning a number of sharp rocks, and sending them flying directly toward the Swablu. Having been taken aback a bit by the ineffectiveness of it's previous attack, the Swablu didn't react fast enough to avoid the attack and took a direct hit that sent it falling to the ground.
Gwen wasn't surprised that it had failed to sharpen before attacking, but she maintained patience with the Carbink anyway. "Use Sharpen to increase your attack power. You'll do more damage." Gwen instructed the Carbink.
The Swablu managed to get back up. The attack was harsh, and super effective to boot. Though the Carbink had hurt him pretty badly, the Swablu was still bent on defending his nest. Flying up, he flapped his wings harshly, and it began to glow as a portal opened up. Out from it, a stone edge attack came raining down on the Carbink.
Carbink hovered backward, but was still dinged by the shower of stone. The human prompted it to use sharpen again, and Carbink supposed she made sense, though she felt like she could take this bird down easily without it. Glowing slightly, flashes of light shot around it's body as it used sharpen, and it's attack power was raised. It then returned fire with another stone edge attack.
Back and forth the two pokemon went, with Carbink firing away with stone edge, and Swablu copying the attack with it's Mirror Move. The bird was eventually worn down though and it fell back to the floor, exhausted and injured. "That's enough." Gwen said, grabbing an empty pokeball from her bag and throwing it at the Swablu for capture.

The ball rocked back and forth feebly as the swablu fought against the capture. Within moments however, it ceased and the ball emitted it's final tone, sealing the pokemon within. Gwen reached down and grabbed the ball. "Good work Carbink. I'm Gwendolyn, your new trainer. The one who caught you traded you to me." Gwen said, patting the rock fairy on the head.
The Carbink twitched slightly under Gwen's touch, giving her a reproachful look. Was this it's fate now? To be confined to a ball, separated from it's home and family? The human pulled away, but Carbink just shuddered, as it hung in the air, looking stubbornly away from the human. Having not paid attention, it didn't notice the approach of the human's Absol and jumped as the dark type nosed it.
Azrael sniffed the Carbink boredly. "Gwen's not a bad trainer you know. Worse things than being captured happen." The Absol huffed unsympathetically as he brushed past the Carbink and continued down the hall ahead of them.
The Carbink simply huffed back wordlessly, darting out of the Absol's way, not at all soothed by the strange pokemon's claims. The Great Mistress will find me. She can't allow her devout follower suffer under the slavery of such uncouth, godless creatures as these! It thought faithfully.
Gwen tilted her head at the Carbink, who seemed to be having none of it for now. "Very well then, have a rest." Gwen said, returning the Carbink to it's poke ball. She then followed Azrael down the hall, passing over a Ledyba that was sleeping under a table, and paused as she reached what appeared to be a safe in the wall. Judging from the nail sticking out above it, was once hidden behind a painting. She attempted to twist the dial, but it seemed the thing was rusted out. Trying harder, the thing eventually broke from age and deterioration and the safe swung open to reveal it's contents.

Inside the rotted out safe, was what appeared to be some form of ornate crown. Gwen picked it up and examined it. Not particularly useful, but if anything, it was probably worth a fair amount of money, which was always a necessity. Satisfied with her find, she deposited the crown carefully into her bag, before shutting the safe closed, though with it's lock broken it cracked open again slightly as she moved away.
Reaching the end of the hallway, she reached the final door along it. Pushing it open, she walked into what appeared to be a study. Busted up shelves were everywhere, though whoever once lived here seemed to have taken all the books with them. A gaping hole the top corner of the room washed the dusty, debris strewn floor with moonlight.
A bit tired from searching around so late at night, Gwen sat carefully down on the desk, which fortunately didn't crumble like so much of the things in this old, abandoned manse. Azrael followed, and sat at her feet, though he remained at high alert for anything that might approach them. "Not sure if we'll find our bird tonight." Gwen said shrugging. They had been spending a fair amount of time already, and if they didn't leave soon, it'd be a long, tiresome trek back to the sanctuary.
Azrael gave a non-committal grunt. It would likely only be pure luck if they did happen to find a Murkrow, a male specifically at that, but who knows. "At least you caught Swablu." The Absol mused as he pushed himself back up again and began sniffing around the room.

As Azrael nosed around the room, he eventually came to the shattered remains of what seemed to have once been an old grandfather clock. He craned his neck upward to try and see over the rubble, and just as he did so, a Kricketot jumped out from behind it's cover, chirping loudly before charging past the Absol whom had jumped back to wall behind him in surprise, and straight through the open door.
Gwen twisted her neck sharply when this happened. She wasn't typically one to be easily surprised, but a Kricketot jumping out of no where and emitting it's loud, whooping cry, was more alarming than most things. Turning to Azrael, who's tail was still bolt upright in shock, she gave him a sympathetic smile. "Just a Kricketot. It didn't even seem to want to stick around to play." Gwen laughed softly as she got up from her seat.
Azrael shook himself, and grumbled a bit, though his fur still remained more fluffed out than usual. The Absol, though it had been a long time since he had been rescued from the criminals that abused him, but he still retained this jumpiness. It made him feel self-conscious and incidents like this just served as a reminder that he still was affected by his past.
Gwen made little move to go after the Kricketot, but instead kept her attention on Azrael. She could see the frustrated look in his eyes and could tell he was very bothered by the surprise he had just suffered. "Hey. It's alright, anyone would have been taken by surprise there. I was." Gwen said consolingly, as she crouched beside him and brushed her good hand through the Absol's fur, flattening it out a bit.
The Absol first just looked away from Gwen as she approached, but he came around again as she spoke. She was his friend, best friend really, but it was hard looking at her. Even all the make-up she wore couldn't completely mask the scarring across her face. Though her psychic abilities allowed her to use her prosthetic like an ordinary hand, it still wasn't completely indistinguishable from her real one.
A moment past where Gwen just remained crouched there, running her hand though his fur, until finally he pressed forward into her. "I'm sorry..." He couldn't say it enough. He couldn't look at her, accept her kindness, not without knowing that her scars, her missing hand, we all his doing. Grief weighed him down too hard, and his legs bucked beneath him.
Gwen let her knees fall to the ground as Azrael collapsed. "Shhhhh...." Gwen whispered soothingly. Too many people wondered why she had chosen to work with the very pokemon who had hurt her so badly. Sure, part of her missed having a proper hand, and a face that people didn't cringe at. What happened to her though, was nothing to what this Absol had been through. He suffered far more than her, and a decade later, he still suffered.
Gwen sat there with Azrael strewn across her lap, just stroking the depressed Absol's fur. After what might have been a half hour or so, Gwen could only acknowledge that Azrael wasn't going to get back up again anytime soon, and if they didn't start heading back now, the sun would be rising by the time they got home. "We need to go Az. Get some rest in your pokeball." Gwen said softly, as she returned the Absol. She then got up and made her way back through the old manse the way she came.
