POKEMON
'Why in Arceus are we coming down here again? Why? Wasn't this idiot halfway killing himself one time enough?'
Siegfried lamented as Jaeger barked at him in annoyance.
'Dude, I wasn't half dead, c'mon! Now you're just playin' dramatics!'
There was a sharp jerk which silenced both of them as Joseph jumped down the last couple of feet to kick up a cloud of dust, and when it had finally receeded, they were treated to the sight of the underground system's vast network of tunnels which were eyed with trepidation and curiosity both.
"Don't suppose they had a city built down here eh?"
The ex-con said to no one in particular as he set down the Growlithe and the Ralts before stripping off his jacket and tying it around his waist. Digging was doing to be messy bussiness, and this time he was a little better prepared as he thumbed the edge of a small pick and shovel which were attached to the loops of his belt.
"Fuck knows what they got waiting tobe uncovered, but we're gonna find out. I know it ain't training, homies but---"
He knelt down to their level, drawing a set of precious stones out of the satchel tied to his waist which he revealed to the motley group of Pokemon who gathered around bright-eyed with interest. Each one had been carefully looped in wire and attached to thin leather straps to make pendants which gleamed in the darkness of dusk.
"---If it buys me these, and I know the kind of power they wield to make the lot of you stronger, it's worth the time and the risk. There's one for each of you. Dusk--"
He slung the first one, a deep purple stone around Gambit's neck as the Murkrow kraaah'ed in gratitude, pecking experimentally on the mineral's smooth surface.
"Fire---"
The second was wrapped around Jaeger's neck and he made sure the knot was tied firm given how rambunctious the Growlithe was.
"Shiny---"
Adirael's chest fluff almost engulfed the stone which was placed upon her chest, yet in the midst of pristine white feathers it shone like a small star.
"And Dawn."
At this the Ralts blinked confusedly and pointed at himself in question, more so when he saw the jade-like stone in rich green hues that was held out to him and Joseph was silent as he crept a bit closer so he could wrap it around the fairykitten's neck.
The alarmed bristling of the creature's fur finally relaxed as the ex-con finally stood up and dusted his hands, giving the four Pokemon time to study the stones before speaking up.
"Consider 'em team gifts. I started out with the four of you, be nice to have a little reminder where we came from on bad days. If you're lookin' for hugs and kisses and sweet nothings in comfort, this ain't the place but if you're lookin' for some place you can belong, maybe a second chance at some old demons, we're all in the same ship here, damaged goods and all."
The Murkrow was quiet as he flapped up to Joseph's shoulder to perch there, nibbling affectionately at the man's ear as rough hands scooped up the hooting owl chick who was still too young to fly and found herself tucked down the front of the black tanktop he man wore.
Jaeger had already darted ahead into one of the tunnels, excitedly yarking for them to follow in his stead.
In their shadows as they disappeared after the energetic pup however was the Ralts who was slow, absentmindedly so in his paces as he held the Dawn stone in his paws and examined it closer.
The former criminal had given him a gift.
The former criminal whom he had been assigned to watch, who he had been told explicitly to not trust because you didn't have the luxury of fully trusting people who had skeletons in their closets like this one.
Why was this given to him? What was the man playing at?
The kitten's eyes grew hard as he dropped the stone and allowed it to lazily hang off his neck once more like a collar, his footsteps quickening to catch up with the group just as the tunnels came to life with light from a torch that Jaeger had helped ignite, throwing stark shadows across old walls adorned with mosaics from an age long forgotten.
What, did the ex-criminal think that his trust could be bought?
That was it, wasn't it? Of course, it made perfect sense.
'You really think I'm that naive?'
Siegfried spat out quietly as the Dawn stone swung gently back and forth from the string.
'I won't play your games, conman.'
