[/i] but as he took a good look at the angry red welt that had exploded across his skin, it was with some degree of relief that he noted the injury to be mostly superficial. Then again, had it been his
face or Gambit's, things could have been radically different.
"Doin' aight Scuttlebutt?"
He murmured at the Murkrow nestled in the crook of his arm when the loud, unearthly yowling and howling that sounded not of any animal he knew made both man and avian whip their heads to the source concernedly. The fog was finally lifting and it allowed them ringside seats to the display of unbridled ferocity from the Growlithe who was surrounded in a blaze of blue energy and whirling around like an out-of-control dervish in his Outrage, ripping everything in paths to shreds. It hardly resembled canine behavior at all; The madness was more draconian than anything else as the Exeggcutes shrieked wildly in their death throes, crushed in his jaws and trampled underfoot and reduced to wet, embryonic yellow stains on the ground as their faces were shattered to pieces like broken china dolls.
"
Dio bono."
The anguished wailing of Exeggutor, the 'mothership' of the clutch could have been heard for miles as it trampled around Jaeger, attempting to find some sort of opening to stop the carnage though the remaining clutches invested their energy in billowing a cloud of noxious green spores towards the enraged dog who took a huge whiff of it and spasmed as though in the midst of a Paralyzing seizure.
"Shit shit
shit---Gambit, you good to go?"
The Murkrow looked up at him and nodded mutely as he cocked his arms back with the bird in tow as though he was about to hit a homerun.
"Aight, Pursuit on the one closest to him. Make it
look like a Wing Attack, once it runs, you take it down!"
With an almighty heave he flung the avian like a javelin towards the epicenter of the battle, watching as Gambit spread his wings to feint a Wing Attack, and it was enough to send a clutch of psychic eggs scurrying for cover. There wasn't a beat missed as Gambit's eyes went pitch black and his wings tucked against his body like the angry snap of a fan and he hurtled full-speed towards the clutch, smashing into them beak-first so they were sent tumbling over the knoll to scramble after their brethren who had also taken the wisest choice of admitting defeat by leaving the battle before they were reduced to yolk stains on the grass.
"Jaeger----
stop!"
The Agent bellowed as he breached the red zone in the heat of battle, unsure of what to do given that the dog could barely hear him over the din---his mind snapped back to the sniggering guards who found some malevolent amusement in his being assigned this particular dog, and it made him panic at the thought of something similar happening during a covert mission or worse.
Be that it may that he took pride in battling, overkill was not something he professed to.
Another whirling flash of fur and fangs and fire, and the sound of smashing eggshells made him grimace as he tried to reach out for the dog but the Exeggutor was faster, finally throwing all caution against the win to slam into the Growlithe and Stomp hard on the exposed-cream-colored belly much to the painful yelping of a creature who just realized in the throes of its madness that he wasn’t as invulnerable as he thought.
“Get out---
GO!”
The Agent yelled at the remaining clutch of eggs who were unsure of whether to run or stay and fight for their mothership, and as much mercy as he was affording them now, outside of those close to him Joseph was not a patient man.
“Gambit, Wing Attack and send ‘em packing!”
‘
You heard the man!’ The Murkrow squawked harshly as them, a slam of his wings forcing the badly-injured clutch into a hasty retreat and all that remained was the mothership who also turned tail and began to run after what remained of the original brood.
At the sight of the Growlithe writhing away uselessly on the ground however, vengeance was the name of the game as the Psychic palm tree fired up another shot of what looked to be ESP waves except resembling shocking thunderbolts in design.
"Gambit, cover for him and Night Shade!"
The bolts, fired full-force came a hair's breadth to smashing into the the paralyzed pup and was strong enough that the Murkrow who swooped in just in time to take the shot was hurled backwards as well even without the damage, and the look on the bird's face was one of wrath. Around him the shadows swirled once more, forming what resembled a banshee which completely enveloped the Exeggutor who howled in terror and agony both, leaving a massive trail of broken vegetation in its attempts to finally escape the situation.
For a moment Joseph closed his eyes and breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that the systematic carnage had bene brought to a halt but the smile he wore vanished as quickly as it came when he saw the flash of stripey fur which had somehow regain all motor control running through the undergrowth to tackle the Exeggutor from behind.
“JAEGER!
LEAVE IT!”
He broke into an open run, watching with a sense of horror and mounting futility as the Growlithe clamped heavily-fanged jaws over the gaping mouth of one of the faces, breathing fire into its body so intense in heat that he could see the creature’s three hearts beating frantically within its ribcage just as the smell of burning wood caught his nostrils and the crack-snap of a tree caught in a wildfire preceded the explosion of splinters, burnt vegetation and the singed husks of what used to be the Exeggutor’s faces; gaping holes where the eyes used to be and mouths contorted in a hideous deathmask.
There was nothing to be said for the seconds that passed the end of the battle, the palefaced Agent at a loss for words more so that Jaeger’s tail wagging furiously in triumph meant the dog had no comprehension of what he had done.
‘Ha. Toldja I’d kill you, touch my human again asshole? I think not.’The dog huffed, shaking the debris of battle off his body as he flopped down to lick at his ribs for a bit though looking up, he saw Joseph looming over him with a hand raised. Instinctively his eyes grew wide and he backed away slowly---he knew what it meant when humans lifted their hands the same way his human was doing now, and what he knew of it usually
hurt. ‘….Boss? Boss what did I do?’The inquiry was as bewildered as it was pained as his tail was tucked underneath his body and his ears were flattened. What did he do wrong?
‘I got him for ya. I got him for ya good! That’s what you want isn’t it?’Joseph’s eyes were hard---but he could see them softening slightly as the man lowered his hand, a spark of something like realization creeping over stony features.
“…….Your old humans. That’s what they wanted from you, yeah? That's how they taught you to fight?”
The man's deep baritone was devoid of any anger, only regret as he massaged his temples wearily and felt the gentle grasp of claws on his shoulder as gambit landed on his favored perch. Now it made absolute sense why adopting this particular dog brought up both concern and derision from those he now had to call his colleagues; If this had been a league battle, no doubt Jaeger would have been put down afterwards----god knew what would happen if the dog had been given to an unassuming owner who would then get into a scuffle with an unassuming victim who would have been torn to shreds there and then.
There was no reply to be had from Jaeger who merely stared up at him, licking away at droopy jowls with all the bafflement of a child who had no idea what they had done wrong. There was a tilt of the head however, signifying that the animal was either agreeing with him or listening intently.
He got knelt down in front of the Growlithe, mouth set in a grim, terse line before slapping the dog's snout in light reprimand. It made Jaeger blink back furiously but the wide-eyed gaze told Joseph that he was still being receptive at the very least.
"I want you to listen, and I want you to listen real carefully to me, perrito. No. No.
No. I am not your old human and I don't fucking want this."
Gesturing to what was left of the Exeggutor, his tone was stern, harsh yet empathetic as he placed a heavy palm on the dog's head, plying both to his status as the dominant in their working relationship and a measure of trust.
"When I tell you to
stop, when I tell you to
leave it, you fucking
drop it, do you understand? This ain't no pitfighting ring. This is the
law and as much as I get usin' deadly force when you have to, I didn't take you out of that shelter just so you can kill a bitch when you feel like it. That ain't how this works."
He sighed deeply as the Growlithe's ears drooped as the undertone of disappointment.
"Let's get cleaned up. Got a long day and more training to go to before I log in our progress for the day."
