APPEARANCE
"It's much less picturesque without her catching the light. The horizon tries but is just not as kind on the eye" - Charles Barkley, maybe
Zelda holds a rather distinct appearance, even among the eclectic population of flash city. Standing at a proud 5’8, the Gym Leader is possessed of a lean, athletic figure obtained from an active and intense lifestyle. Piercing emerald eyes shine like gemstones in the illumination of her city's flashing lights, and chiseled features –most notably her strong, angular jaw and remarkable pair of eyebrows- give her the appearance of being carved from stone more than birthed by a human. Her skin is a natural bronze and her hair is colored an inky black. Additionally, she possesses a distinctive beauty mark just beneath her right eye.
In contrast to the more hedonistic attitude denizens of her city tend to take with appearances, Zelda takes a more modest, practical approach. Her hair, though naturally cascading down past her shoulders, is typically styled into a tight business-like hairdo, although it is occasionally styled into a braid and rarely seen hanging down. Her typical style of clothing can be accurately described as “militaristic”: a coat equipped with various pieces of metal armor along her shoulders and back, as well as a metal belt around her waist, pants, knee-length boots, and gloves.
Though not usually seen by others, Zelda does have more casual clothes which she wears for workouts: a simple tank top and loose pants made of light material typically suffice.
PERSONALITY
"Turn up the lights in here, baby. Extra bright, I want y'all to see this." -Larry Bird, perhaps
On the outside, Zelda Albarn is a pillar of dignity and elegance amongst the hedonic sea that is the populous of Flash City. Always appearing pristine and perfect when out and about, the Gym Leader seems to perpetually exude an air of austerity and militaristic seriousness. However, talking to her reveals a politely aloof, yet adequately friendly woman who cares deeply about people and concerned about doing good. Headstrong and unyielding, she doesn’t take anybody’s bullshit, especially when it comes to the businessmen and underground of the city she calls home, but does it in a well-mannered way.
However, most of this is a façade, a mask to suppress the true, full self that she allows out only when around people she’s very comfortable with.
Zelda, the full Zelda is a foul-mouthed ex-street rat who, despite a massive sardonic streak, is a fiercely loyal –almost to a fault- individual who cares deeply for the people of her city, despite their flaws. Perhaps it’s because she despises the actions of the people who birthed her –she refuses to acknowledge them as parents- or her fear of becoming like them, but for some reason she has taken it upon herself to try and fix the city that raised her. A fiery person at heart, Zelda walks around with a chip on her shoulder and isn't afraid to walk to the beat of her own drum.
Ambitions:
- To clean up her city
- To find the people who birthed and abandoned her
HISTORY
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” –Shaquille O’Neal, probably
When you look at Zelda, who always seems to appear perfect when in public and acts above the more base feelings, it’s hard to imagine the sort of events that took place in her past.
Let’s turn back the pendulum and start with the beginning, shall we? The first memory of the girl’s life is digging through the trash of a nearby Flash City restaurant in hopes of finding food. Abandoned by her parents, the child spent most of her childhood forced to scavenge and survive as a nameless street rat, doing things that she regrets to this day –assault, theft, drug peddling, you name it. Anything but murder or sexual favors, she probably did it, but thieving was her specialty.
Of course, nothing could last forever, and eventually she stole from the wrong person. It didn’t take long before she was caught by a couple of goons working for a rather large underground organization. Seeking vengeance for their stolen possessions, the men mercilessly beat her -a young girl at the age of 13- senseless until the sweet embrace of unconsciousness took her.
When life returned to the girl, she found herself wrapped in an unfamiliar warmth, and the soft light of the room. Normally, she would panic, but it made no sense for a shady character to lure her into some false sense of security before “punishing her”. She’d heard tales about what happens to people who are punished, and none sounded at all like this.
“Awake, are ya?” the street rat damn near jumped out of her skin at the voice behind her, and she whirled around to be met with a man.
“Found you in a bit of trouble, didn’t I? It’s no easy task to fight off those guys.” The Kid (for that’s what she was known as at the time) remained cautiously silent; did he want something from her?
“Not much of a talker, eh? I can respect that. What’s your name, kid?”
“…They call me The Kid,” she said, finally, in a gruff voice.
“Unoriginal and odd. Not a good combination.” the man remarked with a raised eyebrow. “Not that I could talk about odd names. My name’s Albarn: Auron Albarn.”
The name sounded familiar, but it wasn’t until later that the kid discovered it was because Auron was something of a celebrity as the Fighting Gym Leader –a noble soul among the scum of Flash City. It was that meeting that changed her life forever; after that meeting he took her in and gave her everything:
He gave her a name- Zelda Eden Tabitha Albarn.
He gave her a home.
He gave her an education, building upon her natural talents as an athlete and a leader whilst teaching her the ways of the world: from Pokemon to philosophy and other subjects.
But, more importantly, he gave her a mentor, someone to look up to and admire: a father.
The years passed and Zelda grew and matured. No longer was she The Kid, who struggled to survive on the streets of a cruel metropolis. By the age of 19 she had become a protégé to one of the most upstanding citizens of Flash City, not to mention a skilled trainer and martial artist. Many a time she had asked Auron why he had taken her in, but the response never stayed constant: he’d felt sorry for her, or he’d always wanted a daughter, or some other vague answer.
When she reached 20, Auron decided that it was finally time for the woman to test her skills and took Zelda to the Bosky Hamlet for the Gym Leader Exam. Despite warnings regarding the challenge she would face, the ex-street rat entered feeling confident in her skills -after all, she had the best teacher in the world behind her. She was bound to win!
Needless to say, the test didn’t go quite as she’d hoped, and they returned to Flash City in disappointment. Overcome with frustration at her failure, she threw herself back into training more intense than ever, determined not to repeat her mistakes again.
Months later, they returned to the Hamlet for a second try. This time, Zelda wouldn’t let herself lose. She passed the test and was finally permitted to work alongside her father-figure as a co-leader, sharing the burden with him. It was a good run, but…
It didn’t last.
One day Auron didn’t come back from an errand he had gone on; at first the co-leader was annoyed, thinking her father had simply gotten distracted. However, as the hours passed that annoyance turned to worry. Unable to contain herself any longer Zelda set off into Flash City to find him. Hours passed, and Zelda’s worry grew when no one she talked to could recall seeing him in the past few hours.
Eventually, though, she did find Auron… face down and unmoving. Stab marks dotted his back. Her heart sunk and she rushed to his side. Too late; all life had left his body already.
The tears and wails didn’t stop until morning, when her throat was raw and she had long since run out of tears to cry, and even then she clutched his lifeless body in futile hope that he’d come back somehow.
Not long after, she resigned from her post as a Gym Leader and joined the Flash City Police (who had no recollection of her but of whom she had vivid memories of their multiple run-ins during childhood), intent on bringing justice to the city. Unfortunately, the corruption reached farther than she had thought, and virtually nothing got done because of it. So for a good year she was stuck at the lowest level with a bunch of incompetent fools who constantly harassed her because of her rookie status, and making none of the difference she thought she’d be able to.
It wasn’t long before she finally reached her breaking point, and, for her own sanity, Zelda quit the 5-0 and headed back to the Bosky Hamlet to reapply for her Gym Leader position, this time as the primary Gym Leader. Of course, with her previous experience she passed the exam with only a bit of difficulty.
And so Zelda Albarn returned to Flash City a Gym Leader, determined to make a difference; she began to gather a group of individuals to form her own special task force to deal with the issues the police were too derelict to take care of themselves.
