OTHER INFORMATION Mind Reading/Sensing Reading the minds of other beings is one of Rhafiel's favored skills, though it has quite a few setbacks. Rhafiel is able to read the minds of those around him, however, unless he is very close with the individuals in question, it simply comes off as unspoken feelings or small tidbits of words that can be hard to decipher in context. In addition, the individual must not be resistant to others delving into their minds. An unknowing individual is just as impossible to read as someone who's resistant. When someone knows that their mind can be read, and they are open to it, that is when Rhafiel has little to no issues. When emotionally close to another being, it's easier for Rhafiel to read them and he can generally put their thoughts into sentences. With Pokemon, unless they understand the human language, reading them is much like reading most other people. However, the older the Pokemon, and the more immersed in the human language they have been, the easier it is to read them. The more of the human language that a Pokemon learns, the more eloquent and understandable they tend to be. (This can ONLY be used on other players characters and pokemon WITH PERMISSION.) Emotional Sensing This is something that is passive and usually cannot be controlled. Reading emotions is not only Rhafiel's overall specialty, it's also one of the hardest things for a human to mask. A face may betray no emotions, but with the help of Rhafiel's skills in psychological profiling, an aura generally never lies about an individual's emotions or feelings. However, these individual's must be within Rhafiel's range of sight, or sense. While he does not need to see exactly were an individual is, he does need to be able to feel them. The further from his core that they are, the harder and harder it becomes to read emotions. Action/Intent Sensing Reading actions is one of those tricky abilities that can either be spot on or oh so wrong, no matter how much experience Rhafiel has. Much like sensing an individual's emotions, actions can only be sensed within Rhafiel's line of sight of sensory range. The more emotional an individual becomes, the harder it is to read ones actions. In fact, most of the time a clear reading cannot even be sought, and only that feeling of an impending action is felt. The feeling generally takes on the form of hair raising on the back of his neck or a sudden tightness in his chest. He can, however, tell if said actions will be positive or negative, but he cannot, under any means, see a persons next move. On top of it, a split second decision to act is very difficult to react to in time, it not impossible. Aura Sensing Passively, he can only sense within a 250 foot radius. The distance tends to fluctuate depending on the amount of adrenaline that's coursing through Rhafiel at any given time. The more he focuses, the wider the range of the sensory, though if it extends too far, it can drain and then start to harm him. He cannot extend it past a 300 foot radius. As one of Rhafiel's constantly passive abilities, aura sensing can be a little odd. Because each individual has a different aura and feeling to them, auras can and will begin to feel familiar the more one comes into contact with him. For those that he is around all the time, he has the passive ability to know just exactly who it is might be within his range simply because of the feeling of their aura. While he cannot tell exactly where an individual is within his range, he can tell the direction an aura is in, and he can absolutely feel the closeness of the aura the closer he gets to the individual. Blind Sensory Sending auras while blind tends to be more intense. Generally, when Rhafa's aura abilities have rendered him sightless, or he's been forced into darkness, his sensing becomes stronger. In retrospect, his hearing becomes weakened, and adrenaline fills him. The only thing he can truly focus on is the feeling of auras, and even the sight of them if they are close enough. Often times this can and will cause him sensory overload, as the deprivation of one sense and the increasing of another can be overwhelming. When blinded, he often appears on edge and ready to snap at any time. If an individual with a familiar and friendly aura comes along and touches him, it's easier for him to focus on his hearing and to ignore the other auras that may be clouding his judgement. In retrospect, someone with an aura he doesn't recognize or feels bad can end up hurt as a result of him "losing" himself and focusing only on the sensory overload, which causes him to panic and lash out. Aura Tracking As long as the person has touched an item recently, Rhafiel can use it to track people down. To him, he feels physically drawn toward the aura in question. When tracking, after he's locked onto an aura, it becomes a passive task in which he doesn't have to focus too hard to locate it. However, the individual must be within his range of sensing to have a good reading on a location. The further away the aura is, the duller it feels and the harder an individual is to track. While Rhafiel will still feel a slight pull in a single direction by holding onto an aura coated item, he cannot fully locate an individual unless he is within his passive or extended range. Aura Sight Rhafiel is able to cast out his mind at any given time to see the auras of others, as long as they are within his range of sensory abilities. It does not happen passively, and he has to focus for the action to be worthwhile. Because every individual's aura is different, and because of Rhafiel's strength in telling peoples emotions, each individual's aura is different. It might be a different shape or a vastly different color, but every one of them is unique, just like a finger print. Aura Colors Rhafiel sees aura colors in actual, vivid colors. Warmer colors, such as shades of white, reds, oranges, and yellows tend to color the auras of the "nice" individuals. Cooler colors, such as greens, blues, purples, and shades of blacks tend to color the auras of the "bad" individuals. Depending on the alignment of the individual, each individual could be a shade of any of these colors. The closer to black or white an individual is shows just how chaotic or lawful they may be. Aura causes / Aura Triggers (Taken from Wikipedia) Auras appear gradually over a number of minutes and generally last fewer than 60 minutes. Visual effects occur most frequently; they occur in up to 99% of cases Vision disturbances often consist of a scintillating scotoma (an area of partial alteration in the field of vision which flickers and may interfere with a person's ability to read or drive.) These typically start near the center of vision and then spread out to the sides with zigzagging lines which have been described as looking like fortifications or walls of a castle. Usually the lines are in black and white but some people also see colored lines. Some people lose part of their field of vision known as hemianopsia while others experience blurring. Sensory aurae are the second most common type; they occur in 30–40% of people with auras. Often a feeling of pins-and-needles begins on one side in the hand and arm and spreads to the nose-mouth area on the same side. Numbness usually occurs after the tingling has passed with a loss of position sense. Silent headaches it is difficult to assess the frequency of such cases, because patients who do not experience symptoms severe enough to drive them to seek treatment, may not realise that anything special is happening to them, and pass it off without reporting anything. Cortical spreading depression, or spreading depression according to Leão, is bursts of neuronal activity followed by a period of inactivity, which is seen in those with migraines with an aura. There are a number of explanations for its occurrence including activation of NMDA receptors leading to calcium entering the cell. After the burst of activity the blood flow to the cerebral cortex in the area affected is decreased for two to six hours. It is believed that when depolarization travels down the underside of the brain, nerves that sense pain in the head and neck are triggered. Aura Triggers Hearing - Sounds can affect when he starts seeing auras. The more people around, the stronger the sense becomes. If it becomes too overwhelming, it can and will trigger migraines. Sight - In large throngs of people, Rhafiel has a hard time. He can passively sense within 250 feet. When it comes to sight, Rhafiel can often become overwhelmed with the number of auras. In turn, migraines can be triggered. When the migraine becomes extreme, Rhafiel starts to lose his vision. Most of the time he can correct it with glasses, though it's still difficult to focus and see. Other times, however, Rhafiel becomes completely and totally blind. Touch - When he touches items, he can use them to track other beings, within reason. Touching someone with an aura that is familiar helps to dampen the senses that make him see and feel auras. This is often the reason Rhafiel keeps at least one of his most trusted Pokemon near him at all times, simply because being in close contact with said Pokemon often works to ease migraines or tension, thus making it easier to focus. Rhafiel's Migraines Just to recap, Rhafiel's aura abilities have awful side effects for him. They often cause him migraines which can lead to blindness, whether mild or complete, and even panic attacks. These migraines also make it difficult to Rhafiel to sleep much of the time, thus he's become a high functioning insomniac. By no means should anyone try to soothe his migraines with medications. In his experience, medications often make the migraines worse, leading him to be either violently ill or pretty much comatose for various periods of time. He has not yet found a good way to cure his migraines, and he's sure that leaving them alone is truly harming his nervous system, but he is searching for a way to dull the side effects of his abilities in some way. HISTORY Rhafiel was born in the Kanto region, but he was born an orphan. His mother passed away directly after his birth and his father, a fisherman, died in a shipwreck long before his mother knew she was with child. Rhafiel was put directly into the orphanage and was raised within its walls. Thankfully, the lady who ran the orphanage was incredibly kind. He grew up with children just like him and he was incredibly close with all of them. He was the oldest of the kids his age, and he found himself to be very protective over the youngest two. They played together, read together, and learned together. No matter what it was, they were always together. When Rhafiel was ten, both of his friends were adopted. He was left feeling alone and unwanted, though he kept in close contact with his two friends. After some convincing and a little help from the orphanage lady, she allowed him to set out on an adventure with Pokemon. He'd expressed his disdain for possibly being adopted, as he felt he only needed one set of parents. His were both dead, so he wanted to try and go out on his own. The lady gave him one of her own Pokemon, a Purrloin named Nyx, armed him with Pokeballs, supplies, a map, and some money and let him go on his way, under the pretense that he would check in with her from time to time, and go to school whenever he could. He moved from his small town into a city and started attending school, working as an aid at the Pokecenter to make some extra cash. He trained with his Pokemon as much and as often as he could, finding comfort in being with them at all times. He spent quite a few years in the city, but when he turned eighteen, he decided that it was time to start traveling again. It was around this time that his Aura abilities started to awaken. As they continued to bloom, he continued to catch Pokemon and travel. He soon found himself at a college, studying psychology and writing. He graduated by the time he was twenty-three and went on his way to the Johto region. He started to write his first novel, taking his time with his training and the discovery of his abilities. Over the years, he discovered more about the Aura abilities and started to use it to his advantage when picking out liars and cheats. He himself went to the Kanto Interpol headquarters within the last five years, after traveling for most of his life and writing eight books, and asked for a job. He felt that with his abilities, he would make a great Psychological Profiler to catch the criminals that they were after. Thankfully for him, he was accepted into their ranks, and started working around the world to try and track down the various targets. He's continued to write and train with his Pokemon, and he plans to until he's too old and decrepit to do any more. RP SAMPLE
