ready, set, go
◥
Finally, she had made it. After hours upon hours of walking, declining battle challenges and convincing many, many trainers that she wasn't looking to battle anybody, that she was not a battler at all and that she was just here looking for someone, Evangeline found herself before the famed Victory Road. Which is not to say she was inside Victory Road itself, of course, but it was pretty close and she figured this would be the closest she ever got to it. Evangeline just had to admire what little she could see in all its glory, even for a bit.
But enough of that babble. She was finally here, and that was all that mattered. She was here, and this time she would find that Meditite. No matter what. Her last search had ended up trampled when a call from one of her cousins asked for her immediate return to Dendemille, but this time she wouldn't leave the place until she found her beautiful dancer.
Evangeline's lavender eyes scanned the whole mountainous area in search of any hints. "Ready?" She blinked at the Kirlia accompanying her, before stepping forward into the great unknown.

the berries and the first trial
◥
The first thing she heard was the skipping gallop of a... of a... Evangeline wasn't quite sure of what it was, as she had yet to lay her eyes on it, but she could tell from just listening to its upbeat hops that it was happy. It seemed to be quite the speedy galloper, as well, for one moment it was nowhere to be seen, and the next it was jumping animatedly next to the coordinator's Kirlia. A small goat stopped to watch Echo's graceful spins, at first, curious as to what the Kirlia was doing, or trying to achieve. Moments later, it stood on its two hind legs, clumsily trying to imitate the ballerina's moves.
Evangeline couldn't manage to stifle a laugh. It was even extending its front legs almost exactly as the Kirlia was! "You look gorgeous!" exclaimed she, as she stepped closer to the performance. Claps followed the charming duo's choreography, though really it had consisted on both Pokémon spinning round and round on their spots. The lavender-haired woman saw definite potential in the Skiddo, but its typing was quite the obstacle to overcome.
While the Skiddo and the Kirlia proceeded to engage in friendly conversation, Evangeline let herself a moment of pondering and future planning. The Skiddo seemed cheerful and fun, and Echo enjoyed its presence, but would it be wise to take it away from the mountain it was used to calling home? Did it have passions other than dancing?
"Ladies," came Evangeline's deep, yet feminine, voice. She was almost sure the Skiddo was female—all those years in the family's ranch had not gone by forgotten—but the human's lavender irises took special notice of how it reacted to being called a lady. All clear. "I know you two are a pair of extremely talented dancers by now, but how about playing something else? Do you want to have a friendly match against us, darling? Sound good?"
Before Evangeline had even finished her sentence, the Skiddo hopped a couple of feet away, releasing what the other two females could only understandas a battle cry, signaling she was ready for anything they threw at her. She laughed again. That eagerness could only mean she did enjoy battling, at least to some extent. "Okay, then! Let's do this, Echo," she cheered. Then, motioning to the Skiddo, added, "Ready whenever you are!"
So it began. "Right, left, one each!" The Skiddo dashed forward, feigning a direct attack when in reality it was going for a Horn Leech. Meanwhile, the Kirlia started to spin and spin and spin, simultaneously avoiding the Skiddo's initial 'attack' and releasing one ball of darkness and lightning from each hand. Little did she know—or her trainer, for that matter—that the female goat's true intention wasn't to simply tackle the Kirlia, but to leech energy from her with those now glowing horns.
The collision wasn't abrupt enough to take either of them down, but, unbeknownst to the coordinator's team, this Horn Leech let the Skiddo recover part of what the Kirlia's Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt took away. "Nice move. We won't let you win that easily, though!"
Echo's dance came to a halt as her eyes glowed pink and, as the Skiddo readied a perfectly fine Bulk Up, a strong psychic wave emanated from her petite body. A psychic wave strong enough to confuse her opponent, and render her next move futile. The wild Pokémon stumbled on her feet, before falling to the ground. The Kirlia took advantage of this opportunity to release a new bolt of lightning, but was cut off by her trainer. "Echo, that's enough." Evangeline smiled. "Well done, dear. You looked splendid throughout the whole battle."
Battle Summary!
40% Used Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt. Hit by Horn Leech. Used Calm Mind. (Attack +1, Sp. Att. +1) Used Psychic. 10% chance to confuse. Cut off in the middle of casting Thunderbolt.
21.5% Hit by Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt. Used Horn Leech. Recovers half the damage dealt. Used Bulk Up. (Attack +1, Defense +1) Hit by Psychic. Confused. (93/100) Tried to use Vine Whip, but failed and hurt itself due to confusion. (49/100)
She approached the Skiddo with a jar of sweet berries, sat down beside her, and let her take a bite. "I picked these up myself from my aunt's land in Dendemille. They're pretty good, eh? I do think, Echo should sit down with us and enjoy this fruity delicacies." And she did. With all the comfort of the world, she moved her little body to position herself next to Evangeline's lap, and sat on top. After a while of comfortable petting and silence, during which she made sure both Pokémon were all healed back to full health, the lavender-haired coordinator spoke up. "You know, I think your dancing talents and battling prowress are lost all the way here. I think you'd be better off with a nice trainer to pamper you and take good care of you."
Evangeline's words stopped dead all of a sudden. Silence again. She tried to organise her thoughts neatly, for the Skiddo to understand. "When we met, you looked really excited to find someone else to play with in this vast, almost deserted place. You were lonely, weren't you? I can't promise to be that trainer, but I will promise to bring you somewhere else, help you look for the right person for you." As her words seemed to come to a new halt, Evangeline took a luxury ball out of her purse, and showed it to the Skiddo. "Would you let me do that?"

how did i let the sweetest of dreams slip away?
She was terribly confused. "Are you certain you won't change your mind?" It was such a mind-boggling moment for Evangeline, being... rejected. She was so certain she fully understood the Skiddo's sentiments, but perhaps that connexion she had felt had been just her own one-sided feelings? Perhaps she hadn't understood what the Skiddo really wanted at all. Unable to understand such a crucial thing, she felt like a failure of a trainer. Even worse still, a failure of a coordinator. Evangeline had always taken pride in her quick understanding of not only Pokémon, but human emotion as well. What could have possibly gone wrong this time? She just didn't get it.
As she watched the grass type materialise once again in front of her and her Kirlia, Evangeline decided to give voice to her dilemma. "I used to live in a very rural town when I was smaller. Lived with my aunt and Julie and the rest of my cousins. We've got a big family, y'see. So, while I was never alone, I always felt like there was a much bigger world waiting for me out there. I thought I knew what you wanted, thought I understood you." And at this she stopped to look directly into the Skiddo's beady eyes. "Was I wrong in seeing in you what I felt all those years ago?"
They stared at each other for a while. Simply stared, trying to measure each other's reactions. Rather fruitlessly, if one may add, for they were too focused on the other to let their own thoughts show on their faces. It was, after all, such a stressful moment for the two. One was trying to reconcile with her past; the other, trying to get her thoughts across. Luckily for them, Echo was present and very aware of the situation. After a few moments of deep concentration, she would be able to let her trainer feel what the Skiddo felt, and viceversa. Oh, she was such a good girl. Evangeline should certainly praise and pamper her after this.
And she would, though not just yet.
Slowly, Evangeline's worry would creep into the Skiddo, and then the young coordinator's confusion, disappointment, nostalgia, ambition, good intentions, all at once. But that was not all: Echo would also let the Skiddo in on a bit of her own affection for her lavender-haired trainer. Perhaps it was purposeful, or perhaps it was just a careless act on the Kirlia's part, seeing as she hadn't fully mastered her psychic powers, but one way or another a strong, sweet feeling of adoration would overcome the female Skiddo. If the Kirlia she had been playing with all this time liked her trainer so much, she couldn't possibly be so bad, right? Maybe the Skiddo's worries were unjustified. But she was just so afraid that her fears would become reality! Sure, the girl of the pretty hair was fun, and those berries were really yummy, but could she be trusted?
Meanwhile, our coordinator was getting the sense of a new set of emotions. The first thing she felt was fear. It was a strange, instinctive fear. Then, happiness. Mirth. Cheer. The Skiddo had genuinely been having fun, but she was scared. Of what? "Why are you afraid?" Evangeline would soon realise that the Skiddo was afraid that she'd leave her. She was so afraid that Evangeline would forget her promise and she'd end up locked away in some of those complex storage systems that humans had created. A PC. She gasped in horror. "No way," she reassured her. "There is no way I'm letting you end up like that. Believe me when I say I will make sure we find a good home for you." The coordinator lifted one of her gloved hands to caress the Skiddo's face. "I will."
Echo's feelings leaked into Evangeline just then, which made her look away from the Skiddo and into the Kirlia's red irises, before returning her gaze to the goat-shaped Pokémon. Echo was just as cute and terribly spoilt as she had been as a Ralts. Still smiling at this realisation, she added, "If that's okay with you, of course." The sentence was aimed mainly at the Skiddo, though in an indirect way it, too, was said for the Kirlia to hear. Evangeline would take one last chance at convincing the Skiddo to come along with her, raising the same luxury ball she had offered before. The lavender-haired girl would respect the Skiddo's final decision no matter what, but she really did hope she chose to join her, even if only for a bit. She wouldn't forgive herself for letting such a precious cutie go.

such is the unalterable fate of a fangirl
"Oh my gosh, it's so cute!"
Yes. Those were the exact words Evangeline Gaubert used upon setting her eyes on the small Teddiursa that was peeking out from behind a pine tree. The Skiddo had finally agreed to accompany her and, after explaining to her that they were searching for a certain Pokémon to add to the coordinator's team, she had agreed to lead them around the place until they found that elusive psychic type. When she saw the adorably tiny bear, though, Evangeline just couldn't resist the urge to gush out loud. She stopped everything she was doing to direct a pleading look to her Kirlia. Echo, on the other side, wouldn't bulge, and so Evangeline would find herself turning back in disappointment.
She wanted the cute teddy. Echo knew this. Her trainer's thoughts were shown clearly all over her pouty face, and her pleading eyes before that. Good lord, her trainer could be so childish sometimes.

could it be... a reencounter?
A deep sigh escaped Evangeline's lips as she, Echo, and their new goatie friend passed by the adorable Teddiursa. It was an almost stressful situation for the lavender-haired coordinator, only being able to watch as the object of her desires carried on. Oh, Echo was just heartless! And jealous. She was jealous, alright. There was no other possible explanation for her immutable decision. So she wanted to think, but Evangeline knew exactly why she couldn't have caught the Teddiursa, and she knew she was just throwing a tantrum, as much as it pained her to see it go. Furthermore...
"Echo!" she exclaimed, suddenly remembering how the Kirlia had helped her just moments ago. The tips of her mouth quirked up as a small yellow-and-red Pokémon scuttled around some bushes. "Thank you for what you did earlier, sweetie. Is it just me, or are your empathic links growing stronger?"

'may i escort you?' asks the night
The jingle-jangle of a bell alerted Evangeline of the presence of a wild being nearby. She thought of her choir of little Chinglings, at first, and her spirits lifted at the pretty sounds one of them was making—surely it was Lottie, that hyperactive little darling—but soon she realised she hadn't brought them along this time. Tilting her head in the direction of the wild Chingling's chime, she avoided it to the best of her ability. She knew the species to be easy to rattle.
The sky was turning a plethora of new shades, each darker and strangely more beautiful than the last. It was as if darkness beckoned not only to her, but to the entire universe, as Evangeline and her two escorts walked along the edge between forest and mountain. A delightful chill ran past the lavender-haired woman's uncovered shoulders, making her reach into her bag for the coat she had discarded hours ago, when everything was fun and games full of daylight.
"We should go back," she proposed as she covered her frame in an extra layer of cashmere. "It's getting dark and our vision will be of no use if we stay in the dark for much longer." The decision to return was unanimous, and before long the three females made their way back into the mountain side and away from the critter-filled woods.
