where stars are drowning
Fern frost started to nip at the corners of every corner of every window of every house, signaling the start of the winter season in Anatase. Unnur's tenth, to be specific—yes, she did feel the need to specify. One gleeful scream escaped her lips as she hopped down the windowsill and, armed with a warm fur coat and high boots, hurried to the door, leaving only a quick "I'll be back later!" behind to notify the house's other inhabitant of her leave.
Not even a minute later, a pair of red-and-white pokéballs had been taken out of the small, fluffy pouch resting around her shiny new coat and, after a white flash came out from each, emptied of the pokémon inside. Before long, seal, shell and human child were all creating a trail footsteps on the thick layers of snow that had sprinkled down the night before. Oh, the fun that was to be had that day.

where stars are drowning
Unnur and her mother lived in a small, warm cottage in the middle of nowhere. No, not nowhere, not exactly nowhere. Perhaps it would be a lot more accurate to say they lived surrounded, protected even, by the secrecy of the woods, woods covered almost permanently by layers upon layers of snow. These woods, as it would be expected, had many inhabitants other than the two human females. Running into one or two pokémon roaming about was not at all strange. When a Cubchoo suddenly poked its head out from behind a tree, neither Unnur nor her two water-types were all that surprised.
What did indeed surprise them, however, was that this little bear in particular had actually attacked them.
Surprised or not, Unnur's reflexes were quick as lightning. Without a shred of hesitation, her agile body jumped back so as to avoid the breath of frost the Cubchoo had released, and called out for one of her pokémon. "Nori, block!"
The female Shellder didn't so much block as she awkwardly rolled about the field, after shutting her two hinged valves together very tight. An outsider may very well consider it clumsy and fruitless for the Shellder to even attempt that, but trainer knew better than to criticise Nori in the middle of a battle, of all things. Even if simulating being a rolling stone was far from what she expected when she first ordered her to block the Cubchoo's attack. Oh well.
Unnur redirected her attention to their opponent, the small, little, and quite possibly lost cub. She always thought they looked very funny, with that giant icicle-shaped snot. Unnur stared at it for a moment, pensively, before her lips turned up in a unnerving smile. "Go ahead and pierce it." Five rather sharp spears of ice were launched in the direction of the Cubchoo, who was busy enough shifting in fear at the human's icy tone. The Cubchoo briefly wondered if human children were all as heartless as this one, or if he had just run out of luck this time.
Nori's attack, despite everything, didn't hurt quite as much as he had been expecting. And with reason, too—Unnur had chosen a move that wouldn't be very effective against the Cubchoo on purpose. She just wanted to scare it away.
While she had succeeded in frightening the life out of the poor little Cubchoo, the final result seemed to be the exact opposite of what she wanted. Instead of running away, it was willing to stay and fight back, much to her chagrin. She looked on, full of worry, at the Cubchoo. Unnur knew all too well what that pose meant, what it entailed. She had seen it used so many times throughout the ten years she had lived in these mountains. It was going to use Bide.
Luckily, Unnur knew just what to do. Nori's previous dance all over the field had given her an idea. In her clumsy jumps, she had managed to splatter the then neatly-piled snow all around, exposing all the dirt and—oh, surprise—rocks lying underneath. One shared glance was all it took for her plans to reach her pokémon, and soon many medium-sized stones were being launched at the Cubchoo. Taking type effectivity into account, Unnur was certain this would be the end.
But that wouldn't be all. Oh, the Cubchoo wasn't about to go down just like that, just after losing his mother to another heartless human. The dubbed Chill Pokémon would once again surprise her, in a manner she didn't know it could. Before the Shellder's scary-looking rocks could hit him, the Cubchoo changed tactics and, instead of using Bide as planned, tried to Endure the Rock Blast. In the end, he would stand with barely any energy left, but stand he did, and he did it proudly. It was the last move his mother had used before falling trap to that hunter.
Unnur had to admit, that was quite a neat move. After no more than a few seconds of reconsideration, she scoured her coat's pockets for a pokéball she could throw at the faltering Cubchoo.

Unnur's grin was clear proof of her pleasure. The Cubchoo, whose gender would remain unknown until she returned home and asked for her mother's help, was now safely resting in its brand new pokéball; Nori and Prince were left mostly unscathed by the battle; and she had finally used that pokéball her mother had given her all those months ago to catch her first pokémon. Unnur's party continued forward until they were out of the woods and her little cottage could no longer be seen. Things were going well.
That is, until she felt the weightless load of snow slowly falling upon her face grow heavier. Harder, somehow. She turned around, stranged. "Hail...?" And that was when she spotted the snow giant creeping out of the woods without a care in the world. Her brows furrowed, as a gust of chilly wind threatened to send her coat flying away.
"Seems like we'll need more rocks, Nori."
Nori got to work immediately, replicating her prior... tactics. Her tiny body flailed around in a chaotic waltz that sent a lot of snow flying in all directions, successfully uncovering a good chunk of ground for the next part of her move: Rock Blast. Unnur looked on expectantly, waiting for the enemy's reaction. She was a bit scared, to be honest. Throughout her short life, she'd had plenty of experience dealing with small pokémon, but an Abomasnow that could easily be five times Nori's size, if not more, was so scary.
And don't even get her started on type weaknesses.
Even so, Unnur showed none of this fright in her tone and actions. She wouldn't want Nori's confidence to dwindle, now, did she? She could do it. They could do this. They'd just need to work around this giant, and bring it down.

Double Team, in the form of more awkward jerks, to give place to a new Rock Blast. Hurt by hail.
The storm seemed to forever follow the great snow giant, though that never bothered it. He’d grown to with the falling hail and snow and he’d come to assume that that was just how the world was. A cozy cold with a consistent kind of weather, that’s what the world was like outside of his hide away. With the comfortable chill being such a constant in his life, he often found himself running into another constant in his life as well. The sight of a young human in his storm was all he needed to spot through the falling hail to know something was about to happen. This something in the form of whatever it was throwing up snow all around in front of the tiny person.
The bizarre flurry was quickly revealed to be the sight of rocks suddenly flying out of the ground. With a quick wave of his arm, though, the Abomasnow would send the rocks off their path by a powerful chilling Icy Wind. Following the sharp breeze, the snow would grow thicker as the abominable snow monster would follow his wind with a Powder Snow to discourage the duo from taking him on. He had no idea what that purple thing that had thrown the rocks at him was, but given its size, he doubted it was much of a threat.
SUMMARY; Used Icy Wind to deflect the Rock Blasts and followed with Powder Snow. Powder Snow has a 10% chance of freezing the target.

The ten-year-old watched in shock, feet practically rooted to the snow-covered ground, as the Abomasnow shoved Nori's attack to a side with such ease that she had to wonder for a second if things were really going to turn all right. She briefly wondered whether that giant would follow after them if they ran away now, but her musings were cut short when she saw more cold, hardened snow hit Nori.
"I need you to go faster," Unnur said, after sending her small, purple friend a worried frown. Nori deserved a prize, whole plates of delicious food just for her, considering all the hail she'd been enduring that day. "Shell Smash!"
Purple soon became a glowing white, and white became a chaotic mix of reds and blues and smoky hues. The white energy then cracked and broke apart in many pieces as the Shellder dashed forward in a glowing blur of purple. Nori's body spinned around the Abomasnow, slashing at its hairy tummy, before she heard her trainer's new orders.
"Aim for the head!" As soon as Unnur's words reached the Shellder's auditory system, she quickly switched directions back to the Abomasnow. Without stopping even once to catch her breath, she jumped up and opened her mouth wide in an attempt to trap their enormous opponent's head between its two valves.

Watching the duo that had begun this battle refuse to flee, the Abomasnow prepared himself for yet another retaliation from the small duo. He couldn’t comprehend why they would continue to oppose him, finding himself to be quite the powerful beast. He wasn’t one to take lightly, he was sure of that. In the distance, the little purple thing would begin to glow with a bright white light before, like a strange firework, it would drastically change colors in a bizarre display he wasn’t familiar with. With no trainer to warn him about what was about to come, the sudden sight of the Shellder zooming right at him gave the Abomasnow quite a shock.
Nailed in the gut with the Razor Shell, the Abomasnow stumbled a few steps back and looked at the peculiar purple thing once more. What on earth? His head jerked up at the shouts from the girl in the distance. He couldn’t understand what she was saying but suddenly his field of view would be blocked by the purple creature chomping down on his head. What?! He reached up to desperately pry the painful grip of the Shellder off of his head but it would be to no avail. Desperate to get the Shellder off, the Abomasnow’s hand would recoil from the shell and a ball of ice would form around his hand. With a powerful thrust, he would launch his icy punch at the clam on his head before following with a soothing whistle to try and lull the Pokemon to sleep so he could remove it from him.

where stars are drowning
Unnur was well aware that the trick they had pulled was not going to last for long, and so did the Shellder. As tightly as she may have been clinging onto the Abomasnow's head, even when it tried to shake her off with its big and hairy hands, they both knew sooner or later it would find a way to counterattack. While the trainer felt as if a light bulb had suddenly lightened up on top of her head, her Shellder was already bracing herself for the next attack.
The rocks Nori had sent flying at the Abomasnow earlier had been easily shoved to a side with a flip of its arms, but that had been because it had seen the attack coming. Now, its field of vision was almost entirely jeopardised, which gave the sneaky little blue-haired kid an idea. Betting on the small chance that the Shellder could still see her all the way from her current position, Unnur raised one arm high above her head, while the other jerkingly pointed at the mess the purple Pokémon had made with her awkward attempt at using Double Team.
The Abomasnow wouldn't have possibly heard her anyway, had she opted to scream her idea to her partner in crime, but the little Unnur was too preoccupied actually making a show out of herself to realise that. Too preoccupied, in fact, to see that powered-up punch coming, or the high-pitched whistling sound that followed.
In the span of time it had taken for the Shellder to notice her trainer's jerky movements and look over to the uncovered earth she had been hanging about at just minutes ago, just to attract any and all remaining rocks as a last resort before going down, the ice giant had brought down a now ice-covered fist to punch her body, and was starting to release a soft, whistling melody from its mouth. "Nori!" the Shellder heard her trainer cry, just before she felt her eyes shut and everything went black. Without any energy to continue clutching onto the Abomasnow, she let herself fall, slowly, left ultimately unaware of whether her Rock Blast managed to hit its target or not.

where stars are drowning
Nori fell soundlessly to the cold, white snow. But, as she did, the strangest thing happened to her. Unnur set herself to run to her Shellder's meeting quickly and without pause. Against any and all manners of foretelling, however, the purple Bivalve Pokémon went completely white and the shadow—or was it her reflection?—became bigger and more threatening. Ten-year-old Unnur stopped in her tracks, a mix of confusion and horror showing on her young and pretty face. "Oh no, Nori, what's going on? What's happening to your body? Nori, no, stop, wait, I'm coming!" she cried desperatedly, tears beginning to form in the corners of her eyes.
By the time Unnur reached her Pokémon, the body she found was nothing like the one she knew. "Noriiiii," she called out, really crying now. The girl's Shellder was unconscious from the Abomasnow's somniferous attack. Speaking of the Abomasnow, what had even become of it? As soon as she saw Nori fall, Unnur had blocked out all other thoughts. Full of anxiety, the child turned around to determine the whereabouts of the cause of all her worries. Thankfully, Nori's ultimate attack had managed to knock it down, but that wouldn't bring the Cloyster back to consciousness.
"Wake up, Nori!" she tried again. She felt her voice break with her furious sobbing and tears and snot. Unnur turned around again, having listened to more whistles coming from inside the snowy woods. More giants were coming their way! "Oh no. No," she whispered, shaking her head. Then, raising her voice once again, "Prince! Prince, hurry up, we have to run!" Unnur pushed and pulled with all her force until she had, somehow, taken Nori to the edge of the cliff. Taking a deep breath, she nodded at the Seel, already waiting for them. "Down, go!"
Down they went. Little Unnur clasped her two arms firmly around Prince's body as they fell, Nori's round and very much unconscious body rolling down the snowy cliff not far behind them. Unnur's delicate hands were hot and bruised, product from the exertion she'd subjected them to when trying to push Nori away from danger; right now, though, she didn't feel any hurt. Not yet. The first stage of shock would last long enough for them to escape from the family of Abomasnow.
