And yet again, that straightforward answer - frankly, the kind that he'd pretty much been conditioned to expect not to get by this point, and the kind that he kept finding himself mildly surprised to hear from Lorraine. None of that cryptic bullshit he got from his mom, none of the sass he was used to dealing with from Shiori, not the typical "figure it out yourself" response he was used to from his dad, or.... well, frankly he still didn't know his cousin well enough to know what kind of answers to expect from her, but he had a feeling that a lot of those responses would more or less boil down to "buzz off, it's none of your business". Sure, excellent environment to raise someone up to be pretty independent, but not exactly conducive to an inquiring mind or simply the willingness to ask questions if all you expected was to get bullshit in response - long story short, this was a very refreshing change of pace, but one that would still probably take a fair bit of time to get used to.
The Pokemon that she'd started to list off, though, were not what he would've pictured her wanting - all of them, at least the ones listed, being Ground types, and not particularly ones known for being easy on beginning trainers save for the sole exception of Sandshrew. All of them were Pokemon he was at least vaguely familiar with - mostly thanks to his mother's specialty types - and while Phanpy was a handful due to the thing's raw physical strength, Rhyhorn.... was not an easy Pokemon to handle. Typically well known for their short fuses, brutish physical strength and durability, they weren't Pokemon that Ryusuke would imagine to be easy for a new trainer to control or train, and after what he'd seen so far..... she already had enough trouble keeping her Onix in line, and so far she'd had yet to even let that Spinarak of hers out of its ball. What she'd do with a Rhyhorn, he had no idea, but then again that was her problem, not his. He wasn't about to go and tell her any of that, frankly speaking because he knew damned well that he wouldn't have appreciated it in her position, and he wasn't exactly one to talk, either. Treecko barely listened to him, Charmeleon was a straight up brawler who took a special sort of... enthusiasm from his fights, and Aerodactyl had only recently stopped attempting to try and kill him every time he let her out - hell, it was only within the last couple of weeks that she'd stopped giving him the stink eye. If she wanted to take the hard road and learn from her own mistakes, all the more power to her. There was one small issue, though, that did have him curious.
"Alright, say you got them, though. What comes next? You don't really strike me as the kind of person who wants to stay a trainer your entire life - you've met my mom, and the only other career trainers I know aren't too different from her." Ryusuke asked, simply continuing down the tunnel. In fairness, a question he had asked himself, and with increasing frequency as of late. His trip to his mom's home region had, frankly, ended in disaster, even if everyone had more or less gotten out of there with their skins intact. It had, however, been the only reason he'd actually left home - what came next, though? He had no real reason not to go back, but on the other hand he was finally out. He'd wanted to start as a trainer as early as he possibly could as a kid, but certain issues had prevented it - now that he was one, though, he couldn't even really remember why he'd wanted it so badly.

passing on spinda
Being asked questions and having someone curiously poke around at her life was something Rain was used to from her days as a coordinator. If it wasn’t paparazzi bugging her with various questions, from the innocent to the downright creepy, it was her mother’s constant pestering. It never really bothered her, though. She wasn’t the type to get easily bothered by things, honestly. The last time she’d really snapped was at her mother and a result of just years and years of pressuring and obvious disappointment. A few questions from Ryusuke weren’t annoying in the slight; in fact she was content to settle his curiosity, especially if it got his mind off her fumble.
After giving her answer concerning the Pokémon she was considering, he almost immediately shot one back to her. What was she planning to do next? A good question, but it took her a moment to answer. Originally, she had left home with the mind set of becoming a trainer much like her older brother. She was going to take on the Orre League, and she was going to hopefully acquire a badge or just something to show her mother just how capable she was. With the whip lash of reality, though, Rain’s plans hadn’t gone according to plan. Her first day in Orre had nearly ended in a catastrophe, and the following week ended up with her leaving the region altogether with some boy trying to find his run away Metagross.
It was almost funny to consider, but that wasn’t what he’d asked about. Her plans had changed, now. She was… Well, obviously, she would… Rain’s calm expression slowly began to adopt a slight frown. What was she going to do? Being a trainer was what she wanted to do, but after her first battle, and just her past couple of weeks in general, it wasn’t really working out. Maybe Ryusuke was right, maybe this wasn’t really what she should be dedicating her life to. After the moment of just silent thought went by, a slow deep sigh escaped the young woman. “Honestly, I don’t know…” she answered, tilting her head back slightly to glance towards the cave’s ceiling.
“I… I was planning to just be a trainer” she mumbled, slowly tilting her head to look over at Ryusuke. “I mean, that’s what I wanted to be ever since I was a kid, y-y’know?” she questioned, carefully tucking some of her hair behind her ear. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed something moving and took it as an excuse to look away. “It’s not really what I thought it’d be like, though” she confessed, her confused expression taking an almost annoyed turn when her eyes rested on the spinning little bunny-bear she thought she was getting instead of her Spinarak. She didn’t bring Ryusuke’s attention to it as she just looked back ahead. “I know for sure I don’t want to go back to coordinating, but…” she trailed off.
She knew for a fact that at this rate, if she wanted to become a trainer, she’d be in need of a lot of changes. A lot of changes she couldn’t see happening just over night, and she knew she couldn’t follow Ryusuke forever. Granted, at this point, without having to follow that Metagross anymore, he was free to go anywhere from what she’d gathered. They both had nowhere to be at the time being, but she still didn’t feel like it would be fair to be a burden to him. If she wanted to be more like a trainer, it’d take time, and following Ryusuke, he could make up for her faults until she was ready to stand up on her own, but that wasn’t fair. That wasn’t fair at all, but what else was there she could do? There wasn’t much in this world that bothered Lorraine Hasan, except for her own incompetence.

So, as he'd thought, she was more or less in exactly the same boat he was. Left home to follow something she had wanted to do as a kid, but it was a course of action she hadn't really considered beyond the planning needed to get away from home - and, long story short, the exact same mistake he had made. While he'd come to terms with the fact that battling was something he was good at despite being something he didn't particularly want to do, he wasn't sure Rain herself had reached that conclusion yet. She clearly had talent based on what he'd seen a few minutes ago, but she lacked the... bite that other trainers had, the same kind of enthusiasm. She knew what she was doing, but that didn't mean she particularly wanted to do it - more than anything she was simply going through the motions like a memorized routine, and the fact that she was actually trying to like the lifestyle instead of just letting it happen was showing through. Given that he still hadn't exactly figured out his own situation, though, he couldn't exactly think of anything to say that wouldn't either be a lie or otherwise insincere - that didn't mean, however, that he didn't know people who might be able to help in that regard, and as he glanced back his eyes caught a glimpse of the pendant like object Treecko wore, a light grey stone attached to it.
"Not really sure how to help as far as that goes, but being a trainer's not the only alternative to coordinating. I might actually know someone who could help with that, a Professor I'd met a while back. Not exactly normal, but she was helpful. For a price, anyways." Ryusuke said, turning his head forward to once again keep track of where he was walking. What had her name been? Io? Batty as hell and not exactly a place he wanted to go back to - Ryusuke had NO love of water, and had he not known better he'd have sworn that catwalk was far overdue on its safety inspection - but she'd been helpful when no one else had really been. And sure, it had cost him money, but it was money well spent as far as he was concerned - Treecko had been holding onto that Everstone almost as if his life had depended on the damn thing ever since they'd gotten it, and beyond that her advice regarding Aerodactyl was probably why the damn thing wasn't trying to kill him anymore. A trip well spent, and with any luck she'd be able to give Rain some advice on which direction to head in career and lifestyle wise - the only tricky part would be tracking down the contact info for her since it'd been over a year since Ryusuke had stopped by that lab.

catching sandshrew
Initially following her confession of being lost, she was met with silence from her companion. Honestly, it didn't surprise her that he didn't immediately reply. Ryusuke had grown up in a family of trainers, given Elinda's antics, it was safe to assume training had always been some sort of factor in his life. Even if he wasn't as enthusiastic about battles as his mother, she could tell training would always somehow be a part of who he was. Then again, training was something she'd grown up with, too. While coordinating had been forced on her, training was something she'd personally wanted to do. Ryusuke seemed to take to it so easily, so why was it so hard for her? Battling? It was simple. She studied the moves, she memorized limitations, and found ways around them. She figured it all out, and managed to pull it off. Just like coordinating, she figured out the motions, the steps, and managed to do just as she was told, but still it never felt satisfying.
Finally he spoke up, and he suggested, much to her surprise, an alternative. Blinking a few times, Rain's gaze drifted over to Ryusuke, almost baffled by his words. A professor? A professor. She let his words roll around in her mind, gaze slowly drifting back forward. What could a professor possibly do to help her find another path to take? She was going to be an adult by this weekend, eighteen-years-old, and no idea what to do with her life. She almost aired this doubt, almost told Ryusuke she wasn't so sure about this idea, but she held her tongue. It wasn't like she was coming up with anything, this might be the only way to go, honestly. Besides, you never know until you try!
Rain shifted the weight of her bag and turned a small smile to her friend. “Well... If this professor can help me out, I'm sure the price will be worth it” she replied softly. There was the sound of something stirring the dirt up ahead, leading to Rain shifting her gaze back forward. “Thanks, Ryusuke” she tacked on before stopping at the sight of what suddenly popped its head out of the ground.
Just a few yards ahead, the golden head of a Sandshrew popped up from an old tunnel. Casually making her way into the tunnel Rain, Ryu, and Treecko were in, the Sandshrew didn't even seem aware of them as of yet as she just started to walk off. Rain's eyes lit up slightly at the sight. A Pokemon she was actually interested in catching. She took a brief moment to glance towards Ryusuke. Once she was sure he didn't want it and was good to go ahead, she was already picking up her pace a bit. Digging around quickly to pull out her Cacnea's pokeball, the young trainer tossed the ball in the direction of the Sandshrew, releasing the Cacnea. The little green cactus immediately moved to turn to face his trainer out of habit, his movements causing the Sandshrew to look back curiously.
“You ready for a battle, Cacnea?” she questioned and smiled when the little cactus began to hop up and down excitedly. The Sandshrew started to roll up into a ball and roll away before Rain pointed out at it. “Alright, start off with a Needle Arm on the Sandshrew!” she ordered. The Cacnea nodded and turned around to the Sandshrew suddenly turning to roll back at him. Her little cactus stopped in surprise, not sure what to do, before Rain shouted “Kartwheel out of the way!” The Pokemon merely nodded, deactivating his previous attack to swing to the side, rolling out of the way of the incoming Rollout. Before she could go flying at Rain, Ryu, or Treecko, the Sandshrew seemed to almost stop in place as she worked on reversing her rotation. As she worked on regaining momentum to go the other way, Rain once more ordered “Again, Needle Arm!”
Back on the stubs it had for legs, the Cacnea quickly turned to start waddling as fast as it could at the Sandshrew. It was already beginning to move once more, but before it could, the Cacnea quickly whacked it with an illuminated arm of needles. The super effective hit was just enough to suddenly send the Sandshrew flying at the cave wall with an echoing thud. Rain herself grimaced at the sound and she watched the Sandshrew fall to the ground with a quieter thump. The Cacnea was hopping up and down in joy at the successful hit, but Rain seemed to pause for a moment at the sight of the Sandshrew starting to struggle to get back up. She'd never really battled wild Pokemon before, or watched someone fight a wild Pokemon. The numel from before had given her reason to battle it, but this Sandshrew had just been minding her own business.
Rain pulled one of the empty pokeballs from her bag and stared at the injured Pokemon before glancing over at her Cacnea. “Cacnea” she called, the little cactus looking up before shuffling over. Once he was close, Rain began to walk towards the Sandshrew, moving slow at first before gesturing for Cacnea to take the lead. With her Pokemon between her and the Sandshrew that finally managed to at least sit up, she stopped and knelt down. The Sandshrew looked ready to keep up the fight, but was clearly too weak from the hit to do so. “I'm sorry, I promise that won't happen, again...” she softly assured, before standing up and tossing the ball onto the Sandshrew. The button bonked the Pokemon's head and snapped open to take it in, immediately starting to rock back and forth to demonstrate the process of taming the monster.

We're pushing through the warped wind Outstripping the cold sky Nevertheless, we still continue to wander
"Not a probem." Ryusuke said - or at least started to say as he continued on ahead of her, only to stop both mid sentence and midstep as the ground ahead of them began to turn itself over, a disturbance making itself known and Treecko again repositioning himself on Ryusuke's shoulder. By this point the trainer was starting to understand why no one used these caves unless traveling through the sandstorm whipped desert wasn't an option - the tunnels were infested with wild Pokemon at almost every turn, and had they not had any Pokemon of their own with them.... well, Ryusuke knew from experience that wild ones were not always the friendliest of critters. Once again, though, that internal debate on what to do, however. As the Pokemon itself quickly emerged from the ground Ryusuke recognized it with little difficulty as a Sandshrew, probably one of the most docile Pokemon species he knew of, and in that current time and place of no threat to them - in glancing over at the only other human in the tunnel, though, he was relatively surprised to see a different reaction for once. The last few had been nothing but apprehension or general irritation such as when the Spinda had appeared, but this time... if he hadn't known any better it was the same sort of glint that he'd seen in other trainer's eyes when they saw something that they liked, either in terms of opponents or a Pokemon they liked.
A fact, it seemed, that would be confirmed as Rain pulled her Cacnea's Pokeball from her bag once again only to send it sailing towards the Ground type, and rather than getting involved Ryusuke simply took a step back to watch from the sidelines, Treecko relaxing and the trainer sticking his gloved hands into his pockets. As before, it seemed like Rain knew what she was doing - her Pokemon had a superior type advantage over her opponent's, and Grass types not only dealt more damage against Ground, it was also one of the few types they readily resisted. That being said, the fact that her Pokemon were clearly inexperienced was definitely showing through - they hadn't battled much before, and given that they were, as far as Ryusuke knew, domestic, it made sense that wild Pokemon would have a bit of an edge over them for a while, made all the more obvious by Cacnea's reaction to Sandshrew actually taking the offensive. With the first attack dodged, though, all it took was a single, super effective counter attack to send the Ground type flying into a nearby wall, and with that, ending the fight.
Ryusuke'd seen enough to know it wasn't going to be in any shape to fight after a hit like that, and thankfully, so did Rain - rather than pressing the attack as many junior trainers sometimes would she instead called her Pokemon back before sending a Pokeball at the wild one, and as it was sucked into the orb he simply began moving forward to follow Rain to where she'd walked. The chances of the Pokemon breaking out of that were next to zilch, all that was really left to do was to check with her and see if they were done there - given how much heat his arm and leg were sucking in things were beginning to get a tad uncomfortable, and he didn't really feel like seeing how much worse that particular aspect of his life could get.
