Altair was suddenly struck by the unwise action he had made as soon as he had pocketed the stone he had taken from the display case. Taking a deep breath to calm his suddenly-racing heart, he slowly closed the lid and backed off from it, wary of any traps or disastrous things that might've been triggered when he had touched the thing.

Upon seeing nothing for over a minute though, he finally let himself relax with a chuckle. He really shouldn't be watching so many of those adventure movies for this because it was making him paranoid as hell. Not the best thing to be when dealing with things like this in a place that he wasn't familiar with. Made him feel like that guy who was named after an Ursaring or something with him voluntarily being left alone with places with only an incomplete map and a few days' worth of supplies. Maybe Teddiursa.

Whatever. He wasn't the best with names anyway and the bear-guy's name wasn't going to be important unless he'd have a project with him soon, so he was safe. He hoped. He took anotehr deep breath and shook those thoughts off before moving on forward with his search.

A fossil!

Altair couldn't believe his luck. He had finally managed to find and correctly identify a fossil in the rubble! This was just oh-so exciting! To think, he'd been searching the last set of ruins and this one for what seemed like days on end, and here it pops up as if by magic! Truly today was a blessed day for him. Now... he just had to remember just how paleontologists were supposed to study fossils.

Well damn. He had absolutely no idea how to go about that one since he'd focused more on the surviving the ruins and not dying from traps aspect. Maybe he should phone his benefactor or something? He's not a paleontologist but archaeologist is a close enough profession right?

Altair took out his phone and dialed his benefactor's number... only to get nothing but a dial tone. Trying it a few more times, he was dismayed to get the exact same results each time. Frowning, he checked his phone to see what was wrong... and then realized that there was no service in this area. Apparently modern civilization has no signal out in the boonies. Just great. Now he was stuck here without a clue on what to do until they pick him up.

Altair wasn't a man of words and waiting. He was a man of action. Heck, his very profession is about action! Therefore, it was understandable that after staring at his phone like it had punched his dad, he had decided to try something.

He took the fossil into his hands and started to try prying it loose from the debris it was surrounded by. It took a lot of tugging and pulling and even pushing on the damned stubborn debris with his foot, but after over several minutes and attempts he had finally managed to pry the stupid thing loose.

In fact it worked too well. He used too much force, making the fossil fling backwards from his hands and crash into what sounded like a wall with a powerful thud followed by a gut-dropping sound of something breaking into pieces. Slowly, Altair paled and turned around to see what had happened to the fossil.

"Crap and a half.” Altair groaned when he saw that the fossil now laid on the floor in many pieces, along with something that looked to be shiny and made of many colors. "First good thing to happen and I break it out of excitement. Typical.”

"Well that was a bust. I wonder if there's any other thing in here I can bring back to practice my supposed expertise in paleontology.”

Altair sighed as he rubbed his forehead while walking down yet another hallway. "I should have just accepted that internship offer for my role immersion exercise instead of being inspired by my main benefactor to have my own adventures like a real-life Indiana Jones. I had to be all action-oriented instead of bookwormish like some sort of cool dude.” He chuckled to himself. "What am I? Ten? Fifteen? Hah. I sound like a teenager again. Never knew old places could bring back the inner youth.”

Altair ran a hand through his hair, only to pause when he suddenly caught sight of a shiny band being worn by a large life-like blue statue of a Machamp. He stared at the strange Machamp, which appeared to be wearing a band on each of its six wrists, though only one had a shiny band that looked different from the rest of the rock.

"Okay. This is pretty cool even though it's not a fossil.” Altair paused. "Or maybe because it's not a fossil. Heh.”

After another hour of wandering aimlessly around these ruins while making sure to keep to places that were marked public -because the last thing he wanted to do was step on other people's toes and get himself completely and utterly lost at the same time- he finally found something interesting. It wasn't a fossil, but a statue of a weird-ass mutant Camerupt with too much hair and some sort of strange necklace was better than the nothing he had been coming across for an hour. If nothing else, it kept him from being driven insane by the silence of the ruins. There was nothing like the quiet of the tomb to make him nervous and antsy as hell.

A part of his mind traitorously whispered that he'd been on edge since the hotel incident in Kalos, but he squashed that down. Instead, he focused on taking off the weird necklace on the Camerupt since it looked valuable and he needed something about of this expedition.
