out there past men's knowing
Little Unnur was almost surprised to see that the brunette girl had accepted her offer so quickly. She wasn't sure why, but Unnur might have been expecting her to cry instead. Maybe it was her subconscious reminding her she wasn't behaving as her mama would expect? Nah. Well, all the better for her. Dealing with a crying kid would have definitely been a pain.
"Good, then," she chimed in, awkwardly fixing her feet on the other side of the brunette's angel-shaped trace on the snow. It kind of did look like an angel, now that she gave it a second glance, though she still couldn't get what was so fun about them. "That's a funny name for your bird. I'm gonna use Nori."
She blinked. The brunette was smiling expectantly. Was Unnur supposed to do something before the battle began? Ten-year-old Unnur had literally no clue. She didn't care much about such formalities, anyway. Polite battles were for lame twits.
"Nori." Her trainer's voice got the curious Shellder out of her careful surveillance of the brunette's snow angel. At Unnur's notice, she hopped out of the hole she was in and into a fighting stance, which in reality did not look like that at all, seeing as Nori had no feet or arms to imitate any sort of fighting stance.
Nori knew what to do immediately. Something in Unnur's sharp tone told her she had to attack. Multiple cobbles of different sizes rose from the ground simultaneously, while clusters of ice materialised out of cold, humid air. Before long, they were pressed together until they formed five medium-sized compounds of ice and rock, which would then be hurled in the general direction of her opponent.
She was rewarded with a nod.
The truth was, perhaps unfortunately, that Unnur merely wanted the Shellder to stay alert, though she definitely did not mind Nori going ahead of herself and getting the fun started. This would be interesting, both because the blue-haired trainer still had not the slightest idea of how trainer battles worked, or of the etiquette involved, and because she didn't yet know whether the other girl was actually more capable than she looked.
100%
Combining Rock Blast and Icicle Spear into big, razor-sharp cobbles of ice and rock and beautiful despair. *Upon mutual agreement, all attacks will have their power cut down in half, to provide for a smoother battle progression.
Angel Dalton was pretty excited, and as the girl seemed to be.. from her perspective deciding on who to use herself.. she looked like a teeny tiny ball of happy excited jitters. She giggled quickly when Unnur had called her Pokemon silly... and then used the name Nori to describe her Pokemon.
"Your Pokemon has the silly name! Norrreeeee.." she said, smiling. She meant it in a nice way, but wether the awkward young lady would take it as the innocent act of joining in she intended would be seen.
It was probably because of this giggling and in general not really paying attention that she hadn't quite noticed that they were already ready to go! She gasped as the Pokemon's attack came into view and went rushing at her Pokemon.
"Wonder Bird!" she shouted, but it was a bit too late. Wonder Bird had totally accidentally been paying attention to some movement she thought she saw on the corner of her eye, and by the time she paid attention the attack was heading the way too. Unnur was naughty to not wait until they were ready! Her mommy would scold Angel for doing that kind of thing!
The first ball of rock and ice hit the poor bird right in the face, making it squawk loudly. The second and thrid hit Wonder Bird because of her moment of shaking that off. Eventually it finally moved away from the damaging balls of cold ice and hard rock, managing to swat one away with a Steel Wing to give itself enough time to dodge the last. Still, there was no doubt that Wonder Bird felt that.
"Wow! That worked real good!" she said, admiring the technique of Nori, no longer too worried about the awkward timing of not being ready. "We're going to go with another one!" she said, smiling. "Be brave Wonder Bird!" she cried out for the sign for Wonder Bird to use Brave Bird. It wasn't much of a code, but it was cool enough for her and Wonder Bird charged forward. Trying it's best to mimic the majestic swoop of a powerful mama Mandibuzz as it rushed forward to slam itself against it's target.
NOTES
Wonder Bird took 32 damage if Brave Bird doesn't hit, 38% damage if does!

out there past men's knowing
The young trainer's gray-blue eyes blinked in sheer surprise. Was the brunette kid calling Nori silly? Could it be... Did she not like seafood, or did she think seafood was silly? She had to contain, with only relative success, an indignated gasp. Either scenario was horrifying for ten-year-old Unnur, and her bitter disconcert would show in the way she brandished her new orders for the Shellder.
She scowled. "That's not how you say her name," Unnur complained, ruthlessly, as she stared at the brunette girl. Then, switching her gaze back to her Pokémon, she added, "She obviously hasn't eaten any makis before, Nori. Let's show them. Wrap it up, just like some rolls."
Unnur watched as her younger opponent's Vullaby rushed forward towards the Shellder in an act of apparent bravery. Her face showed no signs of glee or disgust, safe for the light frown that had been born from disconcert and had morphed into one of deep concentration. What a plain, simplistic counterattack. Much like the brunette herself, she would have to add. Was this how they worked, trainer battles? Did their importance rely on being a trustworthy reflection of a trainer's personality?
While her trainer delved into the true nature of battling, Nori anxiously awaited the Vullaby's incoming attack. For a bird as round as she was, Wonder Bird was remarkably fast. Faster, yes, but it seemed she wasn't as experienced at this. She waited for the Vullaby, took the full force of her Brave Bird, and took advantage of the momentum for her own counterattack. Nori's body was pushed backwards and, with the same force that first pulled her body away, returned in the form of a dangerously sharp slash.
What was up with the straight-forward tactic, anyway? After their first exchange, one would think the bird would have learnt that something like this wouldn't really work against the Shellder. The scene was almost a carbon copy of their encounter. Were the two that careless, or were they hiding a trump card under their sleeves?
At any rate, Unnur had asked her to wrap the bird up like some rolls, and she had yet to do that! Nori would have to hurry; she didn't want to keep her lovely jerk of a trainer waiting. After the Shellder had fully circled the Vullaby's feathery body with her Razor Shell, she rose in the air, high above the bird's head, and let gravity do its wonders as she opened her two shells in an attempt to capture said head and block Wonder Bird's senses.
Mmm, yes. That would teach them not to make fun of her food.
77%
Hit by Brave Bird (-23%). Used Razor Shell and Clamp.
Angel blinked a few times, distracted by her playmate a little more then the battle.. which was probably not the way to battle. She was super excited about the Pokemon Battle, something she had wanted to do since forever and ever, but having a friend to talk to and play with was something she wanted since even before that!
She looked at her face some more, and she smiled. "I said it right! Nori! And I had fishsticks before too!" She said, not having the complicated seafood that Unnur seemed to be talking about though. Angel's experience with fish was tuna sandwhiches with all that mayonaise and mustard and relish, or processed fish battered and fried into sticks. It really was the only way she would eat fish.. and to be honest she never really got excited for the tuna sandwiches either. Fish was kinda icky, fishsticks were okay with lotsa ketchup though.
Thankfully she at least was watching the battle out of the corner of her eye. Vullaby wasn't the best dodging wonder ever, and Razor Shell had hit it's mark well. Such smarts! However it was during this that Angel enthusiastically cried out, "Air Slash time, do your best!"
There was a bit of a delay on the command, but it worked out for the best. As the Shellder was beginning to use gravity to clamp down on the her head, Wonder Bird used an Air Slash. She hoped that the moment had the Shellder vulnerable, it wouldn't' be able to change it's descent, and that upon smaking the Pokemon away it would make it easy to simple dodge the attack in this manner. If that wouldn't work though, Clamp would hit it's mark and make the poor bird a squawking mess of blindness and pain. Not what you want to be as a Wonder Bird at all.
NOTES
Wonder Bird took 15% damage if Clamp misses with the scenario I posed, 22% damage if it hit. Kinda letting you decide.. I hate just deciding something worked on my own.

out there past men's knowing
Everything the young, overly cheerful brunette had said and reacted to could be encompassed in one single sentence. A single sentence young Unnur heard and did not at all like, and for which her indignation would be multiplied tenfold. This girl really was incredibly rude, wasn't she? Unnur had to wonder whether her parents were responsible for that behaviour, or if it was product of letting her roam the world freely as they seemed to be doing now. Maybe a mix of both. Her own mama wasn't much better of a parental figure, if Unnur had to be completely honest, but at least she wasn't going around the world making fun of something as crucial as food.
"What are fish sticks?" The blue-haired girl asked, a frown tarnishing her porcelain face as she watched the other kid's Pokémon attempt at driving her Shellder away. The new term was simultaneously odd and suspicious, but it wouldn't succeed in making Unnur ignore Nori's carelessness, if that was what the girl was aiming for. Had Nori not used Double Team? Supersonic? Unnur couldn't recall. Might as well use both. "Stop fooling around," she ordered, not really caring whether the human brunette thought she was addressing her, as long as her Shellder got the message.
The Shellder snickered in the only way a Bivalve Pokémon could snicker: loudly. Had Nori's purple-coloured shells been less hardened by erosion and years of battling experience, perhaps her laugh wouldn't be as uncomfortable to hear as it had ended up sounding, even for her own young trainer. No matter, though. Unnur was starting to realise why it was that Nori had skipped that preliminary step, but it was now impossible to remedy what had already been done.
Thus, instead of crying over things that could no longer be helped, the Shellder decided to change her plans ever-so-slightly. While her initial trapping move would be inevitably cancelled by the Vullaby's Air Slash, Nori doubted the bird could avoid, or even notice, the little spears of ice forming at her feet. And, even if the Vullaby managed, her chances at avoiding Nori's subsequential release of radio waves with the only objective of confusing her opponent, and Nori's second go at catching Wonder Bird's head by surprise on top of that, were going to be greatly reduced.
44%
Hit by Air Slash (-34%). Used Icicle Spear, Supersonic, and Clamp. Don't worry; that was exactly what I was hinting at.
Angel was quite surprised. This girl never had fishsticks? It was revelations like this that threatened to make any young girl too distracted with fights, much more focused on introducing a new friend to a brand new world. A world of battered wonder.
"They are real tasty! You should ask your mommy for some!" she said, smiling at her. "I wish I had some you could try!" This wasn't an answer, this was a silly 7 year old just assuring that they were delicious, because they were.. giving no context. However it was out of a desire to see the girl try something wonderful. Something that Angel loved. She wanted to share things she loved, the same way she wanted to share laughter before, the same way she wanted to share a moment now.
In the end, though she could only offer. If Unnur never wanted any part of her games, her world, never wanted to join in the way that Angel had excitedly joined into the idea of what Unnur found fun... then that was just the way it was. Thankfully at this time though, even the thought that it could be possible had not entered her mind. What it was filled with excitement, adrenaline, and happiness.
So Angel kept smiling even though her Pokemon was not. It was hard to smile when you were taking that kinda hits. The attack that Unnur and Nori had done was brilliant, the pain of the Icicle Spear that had gone unnoticed distracting Wonder Bird for the split second she had needed to counter attack Supersonic. Then, confused she could only flail about in pain for a moment before she was trapped by the powerfully tight clamp. Angel gasped in surprise at the moves, struggling to come up with the words that might help the situation. She new it was possible, she knew that attacks would be retaliated, that somewhere deep inside the magic that was the mystery of Pokemon battles there was the best answer for it. However she scrambled, unable to come up with it. Angel in her own sense as confused as her Pokemon.. "You can do it Wonder Bird!" she cried instead, at least offering her words of support to the frazzled Pokemon.
NOTES
Wonder Bird is unable to act due to the confusion sniff sniff, also only has 7% health remaining.

out there past men's knowing
Things were finally starting to slow down on the Pokémons' side, as was Unnur's adrenaline and heart rate. She looked from Nori's fall to meet the Vullaby's head to the girl who owned the latter. The brunette had appeared so surprised by Unnur's inquiry on fish sticks, and so distracted by this same topic, that ten-year-old Unnur couldn't help but think that she wasn't taking this battle seriously at all. No matter. A battle was still a battle, and battling was always a fun-ish game, not to mention the only game she knew, so Unnur was satisfied. More or less. She would indeed have liked a more challenging one, but she didn't complain at least.
"I don't think mama could make them..." The blue-haired girl started, a lethargic neutrality washing over her face as she crouched down to grab the bag of groceries she had put down when their battle had started. Now that their game was pretty much over, the brunette should've gotten what she wanted, which meant it was about time to leave. "Nori, that's enough." The Shellder was somewhat reluctant to go back to her trainer so soon, but eventually relented. No use desobeying her trainer. Spaghetti was waiting for her back home, after all! Or, well, waiting to be made back home. Unnur had yet to bring the groceries back.
But, before that, there was one last thing to be done here. One last question to be asked. "What kind of fish are they made of?"
What kind of fish? Such a strange question.. Angel had no idea! "There are types of fish? What kinds?" She asked, surprised by this information. Fishsticks were just.. fish. Did it matter? Was it like the shirmp that she had that one time? Those felt funny, but they were tasty too. She didn't think you made fishsticks with shrimp though.
More importantly, had the battle just ended? Why? "Didn't you want to battle? Your Pokemon was amazing! Nori was amazing!" she said, having been impressed with the way a Pokemon without any arms or legs could be so agile! She was more surprised with the sudden disinterest in it the battle though. "Do you want to play something else? What other games do you like to play?" She asked of the girl, not upset about the way the battle had gone.. but that it was simply over way too fast.
Wonder Bird was coming out of her trance from the attack, and brushing herself off.. it took the ice type attacks pretty well considering, in her opinion. She stared at the direction of her trainer, who was nearly clinging to the pretty girl. She made a somewhat exhausted coo as she moved over in her direction. Maybe the young Vullaby could sense the vibe more.. sense a feeling of tension that the airheaded seven year old had yet to notice.

out there past men's knowing
"That is what I'm asking you." Unnur was not sure what to make of the brunette's rebuke. There was no way anybody could not know that there were many species of fish, so it was surely a joke of some sort. But Unnur did not laugh at her joke, for it was not a funny joke. Instead, she switched her gaze from the girl to her Vullaby. She had decided that she'd have to find out about fish sticks herself. "Your bird is in no condition to continue battling," she commented then, the same lethargy from before absorbing her words as if they were sheets of paper being soaked in water.
"Have you not noticed?"
The blue-haired child really did not care much about what happened to the Vullaby after this, but she did kind of pity it a bit. Having such an unaware trainer could be dangerous in the long run. Well, whatever, that was none of Unnur's business, and was going to stay that way. Or so the girl had assumed, but it seemed that the brunette did not want to let her go back home. "That's the only game I know. Don't you have to return to your parents yet?"
She was a girl who didn't hide really.. anything. "I don't know what kinda fish though, they just call them fishsticks. I can ask my daddy when he gets back. Okay?" she said. She looked around for a moment, scanning their horizion for games.
"I brought some toys!" she said, smiling. "We could go back and.. and.. I got this show and we could watch it, and I got dolls to watch it with us.. or we could try to build snowmen! We could!" she said, seeming as if the things that she was describing were only exciting her further. "Play with me! We can be princesses!" she was normally the princess, the princess of the kingdom she shared with her mother and father.. but she genuinely wanted to share this stuff with her.
She remembered something.. she shouldn't have it, her daddy would have been upset at her for having it.. but she pulled it out of her pocket. A caramel. It was a bribe for sure, but a well-meaning bribe. Friendly friends get a present, for sure. "You can have this if you want."

out there past men's knowing
She looked intently at the brunette's face for barely half a second, before speaking up again. "It doesn't matter." She was shrugging the brunette's ignorance off, mostly because Unnur had already established that she could not trust such crucial information on her, and not at all in an attempt to comfort the brunette. Had she ignored her reminder of the girl's own Pokémon, anyway? Or had she not gotten to listen to it? Someone who did not even worry about her Pokémon could not be trusted at all.
"I'm not particularly interested in playing any of those. Besides, I've gotta bring these back to mama," she said, wrinkling her nose ever so slightly when the word 'princess' was mentioned, and softly shaking her bags. That was when she was presented with a small parcel thing, nicely wrapped up in plastic of a bright, conspicuous colour.
Unnur wasn't particularly fond of candies, either, but it was food. Kind of. And food was, indubitably, one of the few things never to be turned down, and so it would be just infinitely rude to turn this caramel down, even if it was from a kid younger than Unnur herself. She reluctantly picked it up from the brunette's open hand, brought it close to her chest, and at last found it within reason to deposit it inside one of her big red coat's pockets.
Angel knew that delivering things to mothers was important.. and she also knew she couldn't venture too far. Otherwise she might have asked to come along, she wanted to.
"I gotta stay here, because daddy would be mad.. I wish I could go with you.." she did mention these feelings, although she was a little sad about the fact that the fun things she wanted to share were so discarded. Maybe she would have joined in if she didn't have to get back to her mama though. They could have played even more. "I hope you like the candy.. I'll never forget you! I hope we can play again!" she said, calling out to a girl she still thought of as her friend. Even if they didn't really do all that much. Even if she kinda made Angel feel boring. Still.. Angel liked her.
She was blue, glum, and sort of gloomy about the entire situation. Wonder Bird chirped though, and she smiled down and brushed some of the ice off her feathers that her small Pokemon had missed. "You did amazing! When you knocked Nori out of the sky, it was so cool!" and she gave her Pokemon a hug. Maybe a bit of a tight hug, it helped to not feel too alone right now. She tried to remember that as long as Ribbon and Wonder Bird were around, she would never be all the way alone.
NOTES
Fun thread, I'm sorry there was that pause in the middle of it though still.

out there past men's knowing
Oh. She was letting her go this time. The power of parading your mama as excuse, even if said excuse was the complete and verifiable truth, was strong. She nodded in response to the brunette's parting words, all the while thinking that she had never invited her along, and would have never even thought of it in the first place. Mama's cottage was sacred, and any girl like this brunette, whose name she didn't even know now that Unnur thought about it, was not allowed in. These words should be read as follows: mama would most likely let you in, but I'm not.
So that was that. Now that little Unnur had the nameless brunette's implicit permission to leave, as well as the most important certainty that she would not be following, Unnur could finally allow herself to actually up and walk away. She lowered her steel-tinged gaze to her Shellder, blithely playing with some snow, and nodded once. That would be her cue to get going.
Unnur and her purple mess of a Shellder left just like that, not leaving even one word of farewell behind.
