Moving out of her way, Ricki could get a better view of what her friend was dealing with. Oh joy, payments. She quirked her head to the side, careful to not remove them from the piles the papers were already in as she just began to flick through them. Math had somehow always been her best subject, though her grades would beg to differ. She was a mental mathematician and could go through long problems in her head with relative ease. Probably a trick she’d developed during her days of helping her mother arrange grocery lists based off of the coupons they’d collected from newspapers every Sunday. There was a lot of math to take into account when couponing.
An ever slight smile formed as he actually chuckled at her joke, but she didn’t look back up at him as she continued trying to decipher what was going on with these papers. This stack seemed to be taxes, this one was purchases… Stock… She briefly broke her gaze to peek up at him when he leaned back, before going back to ‘helper’ mode. That is until he once more spoke up and Ricki’s eyes rose to meet his. She started to stand back up right as he rested his hands on the table, like a magnet being pushed towards another magnet with the same polar end. Not so much a retreat based off of repulsion but simply letting him get the space on his desk back to himself.
“Go lay low with Jason for a while, and just… relax, enjoy yourself somehow. Just… go be happy while you can be until this is all smoothed over.”
Her brows rose at first, not anticipating Murdoc to give her these instructions. A few seconds of surprise easily wore off to a calmer warmer expression, a small tired smile appearing in response to his assurance. Admittedly, she almost laughed at the idea of Jason relaxing at this period of time, or him being happy when she delivered the information that she managed to get Rocket off their backs. He’d definitely ask ‘how’ and when she explained, she only anticipated irritation or anger at her antics. Heading off to talk to a Rocket commander in the middle of a Rocket hotspot, it was a potentially fatal idea if she screwed up enough, which was something she was sure Jason would point out. It was going to be important to bite that bullet, though. The faster Jason knew about what she’d managed to do, the faster he’d get over it and the faster they could start getting back to how they used to be.
“That and this is literally just papertrails. Nothing as fancy as what Arcane sounds like.”
There was a pause at the comment, Ricki quirking a brow before the tone registered and she couldn’t hold back a brief snicker. “Oh yeah, real fancy” she lightly taunted back with a shake of her head. Glancing towards her Lucario, who had actually been a gift from members of Arcane she could only let a little smirk grow. Arcane hadn’t really been all that fancy admittedly. It had started out as a rebellion against a business monopoly taking over the region and turning it into a means of profit, before just turning into mindless violence amongst a few groups. She shook her head at the notion of such a thing being considered fancy. Fancy was a Mr. Lucas Courtwater who was a boy on the run, but his hide out was ten times more luxurious than any place Ricki could ever call home.
“I guess I should probably take off to let you get back to your work then, huh?” she softly questioned, glancing back towards the door. The Lucario beside her turned to go grab her discarded coat and jacket. Her gaze turned back to the Rocket commander and she glanced at his ribs for a moment. She was pretty sure a doctor would have prescribed some sort of painkillers for that, but he didn’t seem to be taking any. She took her coats from the Lucario and nodded towards her abandoned bag that was also picked up and brought over to her.
She pulled it open and briefly dug around, before pulling out a small bottle of painkillers. It was practically necessary for her life style to keep a bottle on hand, but she was being extra careful recently given the fact she could still feel the stab wounds limiting the effectiveness of her arm and leg’s movements. She eyed the bottle, before holding it out to Murdoc. “Not sure how much it’ll help, but if the doc didn’t give you anything for the pain, this might help dull a bit of it. Over the counter stuff, nothing illegal unless you start over doing it” she explained, setting the bottle on the desk. The green haired trainer got to the task of pulling on her jacket and reached behind her head to start whipping her hair up into a makeshift messy bun. Pulling the hood of the jacket up acted as a container for the hair as it fell from the bun when she removed her hand, and hid away a majority of the trademark green.
It was good to see that his words still had the ability to put people at ease. That was good; that was what he wanted in these kinds of situations. Everything had started off at a very intense rate. It was like trying to diffuse a bomb; luckily, he got said bomb to fizzle out her own fuse in order to detonate another day, and preferably someone more deserving. Sure, she still had to deal with the hard part of the situation - actually explaining everything to the young man in her life and then laying low until he could falsify some papers or give some order to get people off of their trail. Time. Everything always took time.
It didn't take time for her to return his glint at humor, at least, and it was a welcome addition to the atmosphere of the room to get a laugh out of her. Seems he had hit something on the head by accident; guess Arcane wasn't as fancy as it sounded. It might have been worth looking into later if he ever had the free time, but he would ultimately avoid any details about it if he could avoid it. Perhaps looking into it could help his situation with Ricki and Jason, but he wasn't sure it was worth learning what exactly Arcane did and, to that extent, what Ricki had to do. Some things were just better left unsaid.
He couldn't disagree when she commented that it was time to go. The rest of the base camp would be back soon, and it would be in her best interest to leave and take care of it. Hilda was even doing her best to avoid the situation, it seemed; Murdoc knew full well she could have been back at any time, but it seemed she went and found something to busy herself and buy them some privacy time. Good on her; it must have been the Masked Kid situation causing her to show some kind of soft spot. He didn't know if he could just let Jace leave, however. There was still one more thing he felt he had to do.
He was digging into his own bag when she offered him the painkillers, brows quirking up in curiosity as to the gift. What, she was a drug dealing now? Murdoc returned a polite smile as she explained that it was just some basic painkillers. Much appreciated, since the stuff his own doctor's gave him was... less than stellar, to say the least. But her giving him something made this next part a bit easier.
"I've got something for you as well." He pulled out his hand from under the desk and set down the object - a Pokeball, which he then scooted closer to her. "Aegis will keep you safe. Consider it my way of guaranteeing your safety." He made sure that, even though he was smiling, he kept his vision stern to let her know that this wasn't something she could refuse. The Rhydon was going with her whether she liked it or not, and Ricki did not want a Rhydon chasing after her. He had learned that the hard way, once.
AND PAST AVALON
N O T E S: Can set up a trade post for Rhydon whenever you want it done.
Ricki quirked a brow upon noticing the fact Murdoc was digging through his own bag. Oh, please don’t give me a gift, she inwardly plead, but lo and behold that’s just what he would do. Her eyes fell on the pokeball set on the desk and she was surprised that his offering was actually a Pokémon. With a brief moment of hesitation, she reached out to pick up the ball and study what was inside. Seeing through the transparent red cap, he eyes fell on a Rhydon that was fast asleep, contently relaxing in her pokeball. From the sight of it, the Rhydon was certainly impressive in her own rights. She was healthy and from some of the marks on her armor, she knew how to take a hit.
“Aegis will keep you safe. Consider it my way of guaranteeing your safety.”
Ricki looked past the pokeball and at Murdoc once more. His tone and expression made it very clear the option of turning down the Pokémon was not available. She still hesitated though, knowing that she already asked so much of him she felt it was almost unfair to take the Pokémon from him period. Looking down at the Rhydon, she watched the Pokémon briefly stir and look up to her with a curious gaze. It looked back to Murdoc, before coming to an understanding and looking up at Ricki, ready to go. Debating for a moment longer, she finally relented and just offered a tired smile to her good friend.
“Alright… Thank you, Murdoc” she sighed. Putting the pokeball into her bag, having no room for it on her belt, Ricki got to the task of pulling on her other coat. She pulled the duffel bag onto her shoulder and gazed at Murdoc for a long moment, debating what to say before she left. “I’m probably not going to head this far north for a long… Long time, so don’t worry about anymore surprise visits from me. But hey, you head South sometime, give me a call” she chuckled and turned to start heading towards the door. She slowed for a moment, her Lucario moving to take the lead while she turned to look back at Murdoc. “Try to get some rest soon, and don’t forget I do owe you a couple of favors for all of this. If you need me… Y'know what, just call me whenever” she chuckled and continued walking to the opened door. With a single last mock salute to him, Ricki took her leave.
By The Way; Thank you for the Rhydon! And, Exit Stage Left
He knew she would give in and take it the moment she touched it. She didn't know it, but he could see it - She couldn't say no to what he asked for, not when it was over something Ricki had come to him for in the first place. Jace wanted safety and security, so he was going to provide it. Besides, one day Aegis might be his again. Wasn't like he couldn't visit sometime, anyways. He watched the ball drop into the bag lightly, eyes closing ever so slightly as he mentally said a goodbye to her.
From there, Ducky was able to match Ricki's gaze, the words between them gathering up for a moment. Her invitation for a visit was a surprisingly nice one, and one he would take up. He leaned back ever so slightly into his seat as she finished up and began to walk out. At her mock salute, he mimicked. "See you around, Green." And then she was gone.
It was quiet for a moment as Murdoc just leaned back into his seat, arms back behind his head. He closed his eyes and, after a few minutes light footsteps made themselves known and Hilda made her appearance. She moved around the desk and to the window overlooking the place, lightly eyeing it for Jace's potential exit if she just left out of the front. "Just letting her go, sir?"
Murdoc was silent for a moment. Not much to say, really - it had all been said before. He moved his chair ever so slightly to look at Hilda for a moment, then looked to the window - not to look down, but up to the sky. "We don't chase family, Hilda." He turned back to the paperwork at hand, taking a single look at it and then shoving it over to the side.
"We need hot chocolate. Hilda, if you don't mind fetching some... we're taking a night off." Any other night and the intimidating woman would have given him a look, but she didn't question it. She nodded and left the room to fetch the items in question as Murdoc stood, initially going for his bag to fetch his computer but looking back to the window for a moment.
